Another common theme in the Talmud is the prohibition against onaat d'varim (verbal wronging). In a list of examples (that includes cruel pranks) we learn that the psychological injury caused by words may be worse than a physical injury. Jacintha Saldanha, who dedicated her life to being a nurse and alleviating the physical pain of others, was not able to bear her own emotional agony. The public shame, the fear of losing the respect of her family and friends, and perhaps even her job, was just too much for her to handle. The biblical phrase “an eye for an eye” was never meant to be taken literally, but it seems like the “harmless” consequences the DJs considered for their prank’s victim, befell upon them instead. They were reprimanded by their bosses, their show was cancelled and their future employment is unclear. They didn’t exactly turn into a laughingstock, as any hint of laughter vanished with the news of Saldanha’s death, yet they will be remembered as the irresponsible heartless pranksters who pushed an innocent woman to take her own life. Humor is essential to our lives, and pranks are a legitimate way to induce laughter. But before we prank anyone we must consider the price its target may pay. A good laugh should never be a justification for shaming, or stripping one of his or her dignity. I hate to disagree with popular nursery rhymes, but in light of the sad event, a small change is necessary: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words may even kill me. The Real Cost of Pranks

The Talmud equates embarrassing a person publically to a murder, and thus states “It is better for a man that

he should cast himself into a fiery furnace rather than that he should put his fellow to shame in

public” (Talmud Berachot 43b). I have been taught this lesson repeatedly since I was in first or second

grade. On more than one occasion, either as a victim or as a witness, I had the unfortunate opportunity to

fully appreciate the pain and agony resulting from public humiliation, but comparing it to a murder seemed a

bit farfetched. That was until recently, when we all learned how real it could be when Nurse Jacintha

Saldanha became the victim of a radio prank and committed suicide.

"We had the idea for a simple harmless call" said the now infamous DJs Christian and Greig. "At every single point it was

innocent on our behalf. It was something that was funny and lighthearted and a tragic turn of events that I don't think could have

been predicted" added Christian.

The DJs, who are not likely to be students of the Talmud, are right in their claim that it was hard to predict an outcome of suicide

as a result of their prank. I even concede that it seems like there is a missing link between the cause and the effect. But calling

their act "harmless" is misleading.

I don't know how radio stations work, but I assume that like any individual or organization, before they execute their plan they

take time to consider some plausible outcomes. For such a prank, death would not make the list, but the top 3 would probably

be: 1) Someone in the hospital would become a laughingstock, 2) Would be reprimanded by the supervisor, 3) May lose his or

her job. The most likely scenario would be all of the above (and I am not even talking about the harm caused to the young royal

expecting parents).

Another common theme in the Talmud is the prohibition against onaat d'varim (verbal wronging). In a list of examples (that

includes cruel pranks) we learn that the psychological injury caused by words may be worse than a physical injury. Jacintha

Saldanha, who dedicated her life to being a nurse and alleviating the physical pain of others, was not able to bear her own

emotional agony. The public shame, the fear of losing the respect of her family and friends, and perhaps even her job, was just

too much for her to handle.

The biblical phrase “an eye for an eye” was never meant to be taken literally, but it seems like the “harmless” consequences the

DJs considered for their prank’s victim, befell upon them instead. They were reprimanded by their bosses, their show was

cancelled and their future employment is unclear. They didn’t exactly turn into a laughingstock, as any hint of laughter vanished

with the news of Saldanha’s death, yet they will be remembered as the irresponsible heartless pranksters who pushed an innocent

woman to take her own life.

Humor is essential to our lives, and pranks are a legitimate way to induce laughter. But before we prank anyone we must

consider the price its target may pay. A good laugh should never be a justification for shaming, or stripping one of his or her

dignity. I hate to disagree with popular nursery rhymes, but in light of the sad event, a small change is necessary: Sticks and

stones may break my bones, but words may even kill me.

NOTICE OF TEMPLE BETH AM SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

(with FREE Breakfast)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 13, 2013 at 9:30am

The Board of Directors, along with the Men’s Club, invite you to a very special meeting on

Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 9:30am. The Men’s Club will treat you to breakfast, and Rabbi Alon will be our

guest speaker. But before we can begin with the program, we have business to do that will only take a few

minutes. We cannot take care of this important Temple business without YOU being at this meeting

and casting your vote. We need YOU to be present to make a quorum.

Every few years, we take the time to review the Temple’s bylaws. The Bylaws committee, with the approval

of the Board of Directors, has recommended a few changes.

There are two major changes. One of the changes is to drop the total number of board members down from

17 to 15, which we feel will be a more efficient and effective number. The other change is to increase term

limits from 6 years to 8 years which will allow directors a better opportunity to run for executive positions

after gaining experience in various areas of the Temple. One minor change is that we have changed language

that will allow us to hold our Annual Congregational Meeting earlier than the beginning of June.

We are holding this breakfast meeting on a Sunday during Religious School to make it easy for you to

come help us do Temple business (which will not take up a lot of time!), eat with us and hear Rabbi

Alon talk as our guest speaker.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at breakfast on Sunday, January 13th at 9:30am.

B’Shalom,

Bruce Cohen, President, Temple Beth Am

We need YOU to help us make a quorum so we can conduct

Temple business.

SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

CANTOR TANYA GREENBLATT

The music of Israel is as rich and varied as the Jewish people. On Saturday night,

February 2nd we’ll celebrate the 65th Anniversary of the State of Israel with a

Cantorial Concert. From Israeli Art Song by composers trained at the greatest

conservatories of Europe before the founding of the State, to popular Israeli folk

songs, to the Arabic influences of the Middle East and contemporary popular music, there will

be something for everyone. All of the talented cantors who sang with me last year will be here

again, along with the incomparable Dr. Alan Mason on piano. After the concert, the performers

and the audience will schmooze over a lovely dessert reception.

Hope to see you there.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Carol Safran

Hello, hello, hello… Is there anybody out there?

Back in the day when computers were new and the internet was young, I thought technology would

streamline my life and make it less complicated. In many ways, the reverse is true. On the one hand,

software allows us to make quick work of many tasks (like editing and producing this Scribe). The

internet allows us to know our world on micro and macro levels as we never have before. On the other hand, technology

can isolate us in silos that prevent us from seeing things unless they’re right in front of our noses. So it takes less time to

put out the Scribe, but I have no idea if half our congregation is reading it. And it takes twice as much time to post events

on the myriad electronic bulletin boards out there as it does to create a newspaper ad, but who reads the newspaper

anymore? As for those electronic bulletin boards, who knows if we’ve chosen the right ones?

My daughters are both “Millennials”. They have no recollection of life before the internet. Their primary method of social

interface and communication with friends and colleagues is Facebook. They get nearly all their information online. If

there’s something out there that doesn’t have a website or a Facebook page, it’s invisible to my daughters. Their friends

are exactly the same way. Social media are the basis of their community.

Despite his age, my husband shares many “millennial” characteristics with my kids. He keeps tabs on and stays in touch

with dozens of friends and acquaintances via social media. These are real relationships and he invests real time in them.

(The failure of Google Circles to catch on notwithstanding) social media allow Peter to keep up with members of his

numerous and non-overlapping social circles; something he would have neither the time nor inclination to do if he had to

rely on telephone conversations or (gasp!) face-to-face interactions.

Another thing about the millennial generation: research shows that they value disruption. For those of us of a “certain age”,

disruption may bring to mind protest in the streets, but that’s not how the term is used these days. Disruption is anything

that causes us to change the way we behave, either as a society or as individuals. New technologies are types of

disruptions; that’s why millennials are so fast to adopt new ideas like using social media.

Back in the twentieth century, people used to talk about a generation gap – how one could almost predict how people would

behave based on their ages. I believe that the generation gap has been supplanted by a technology gap, with the divide

falling between those who are perfectly comfortable with communicating electronically and those who like to hear the

voice or see the face of the person they’re talking with. Most of us probably fall somewhere on the spectrum between these

two extremes.

In order to remain a vibrant and relevant congregation, we have to understand how to communicate effectively with each

other. So here’s the challenge: With all the different ways that we communicate today, what is the best way to keep

YOU informed?

If you’re reading this article, please let us know how we should be communicating with you. (It’s important we hear from

people who don’t read the Scribe, too, so please help me get this question out there.) Email me. Call me. Get a

conversation going on the Temple Beth Am – Jupiter Facebook page. Looking forward to hearing from you!

1983…. 2013.

It’s TBA’s 30th

anniversary year!

Keep an eye out for news on the upcoming

celebrations!

MEN’S CLUB Jerry Holinstat

Temple Beth Am Men’s Club wishes everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year “2013”. A hearty thank you everyone for

supporting our Men’s Club activities in 2012. The Men’s Club is committed to supporting our Temple whenever our help

and support is needed. The only way we can continue to offer programs and activities is for you to show your support

through your attendance.

In the last 3 months we’ve held several very successful programs. The Deli Dinner, which over 100 people attended, the

presentation by the League of Women Voters, and the breakfast speaker from the Anti-Defamation League. These

programs were interesting, well attended and offered lots of social interaction. We have received very positive feedback on

our events.

On December 5th we conducted another “Men’s Night Out” when we gathered at the Square Grouper restaurant. The food

charge was $5 and drinks were on our own. Approximately 17 men attended. A wonderful time was had by all.

On Sunday, December 9th the Men’s Club, under John Marzina’s guidance, made and served the food for the Chanukah

party. His team did a great job and there was food aplenty.

January Events

Sunday, January 13th: Two things are happening this morning. There is a very brief Special Congregational Meeting to

approve a few changes to the bylaws, followed by a breakfast provided by the Men’s Club where we will have a “One on

One with Rabbi Alon”. There is no charge for this breakfast, but an RSVP would be appreciated. Please RSVP to

[email protected] or by phone to Jerry Holinstat at 630-0297.

Friday, January 25th during Friday Night Services at 6:30pm: The Men’s Club has arranged for a guest speaker from the

US Holocaust Memorial Museum during the Service. Kyra Schuster, Curator of Arts and Artifacts at the Museum will

join us and discuss the previously untold story of the American Servicemen who were held as Prisoners-of-War in a German

Concentration Camp. This is a story of torture, bravery and survival during World War II.

Saturday Night, January 26th: Mixed Couples/Singles dinner out. The 3 course dinner will be at LeMetro Restaurant in

Abacoa. The evening begins at 6:30pm with a cash bar with dinner served at 7:15pm. The cost is $30/person. See flyer on

page 11 in this Scribe for additional details.

The next meeting of the Book Club is on January 14, 2013 at TBA at 10:30am and we welcome everyone to join

us. We will be discussing Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman.

This is a rare glimpse into the Satmar world, unique among books because the author is the rare person who got

out. She, also, had the courage or personal agenda to write about it. It exposes the darker side of the Satmar sect

through the eyes of a young woman who comes from a dysfunctional family. It should be stated that the Satmar

community depicted in this book is far different from Chabad Hasidism which has a more joyous and spiritual

bend. This should not be a person's sole source on everything Hasidism. The story is about a culture that turned

insular in an effort to survive, and became repressive and oppressive.

Life in the W3 Howard Freedland

TBA Family members,

We all have times in our lives when we bite off more than we can chew. We only hope that there are people

around that can bail us out at the time. Well folks, I just got lucky.

One of my responsibilities (as whatever my title is this week) was to plan and execute the Chanukah program on

Sunday, Dec. 9th. If I said that my business prevented me from doing my usual work, I would be understating it

immensely. I was not in town the week before, and was difficult to get with the prior month. Downright surly at

times…just overextended. So, you all went to the program, and from what I heard, most if not all people enjoyed

it. How did that happen? People stepped up.

Another great example of warm and welcome is when those around you know that they have to be there, and

gladly go above and beyond. Carol Safran, Joey Abrin, David Sherman and Maureen Cohen all picked up the

pieces and helped produce a great celebration! John Marzina, Rich Remick and Bob Feller handled the kitchen.

Gideon Kroyter, Jeremy Ben-Israel and Jared Bucker grilled and served everyone with smiles. The list of

volunteers that helped is beyond imaginable…the whole place stood up and helped when there was something to

help with. People manned the inflatable slides and bounce houses. Others supervised the art projects. All in all, it

took a village.

The teens were fantastic (Jordan Reich, Jacob Cornelius, Arthur & Amanda Gelman) and Lauren Brotsky-

Abrin was plain awesome with the kid’s art.

Others included Brian Cohn, Len Rubin, Mark Golzbein, Nina Nemerofsky and Brett Tancer as well as Carol

Sleeper, Margot Hauser and Debbie Baseman. I know that I am forgetting some, but please understand, there

were so many people. It made me proud of how we operate when we need to.

A special thanks to Liz Cohn for her heady art work.

Thank you all for pitching in to make our Chanukah celebration a success.

Many, many people came forward with clothes, gift cards and cash donations to help the grandmother who asked us for

assistance shortly before Chanukah. As many people know, this Jewish grandmother unexpectedly found herself caring for

10 grandchildren ranging in age from 3-14 years old. This was truly a family in crisis and our TBA family responded quickly

and generously. In total, we provided over $600 in cash and Publix cards to this family. We also provided 3 Chanukah gifts

for each child. Special thanks to the Sisterhood who lovingly purchased many of those gifts.

Family Promise

Thanks to everyone who attended the Chanukah Party at the Gardens Mall on Saturday, December 8th. It was a successful

event; and we truly appreciate your support for Family Promise! If you were not able to attend, look for the date next year.

Thanks also to all of you who are helping to host the families from December 28th - January 6th. You are making a valuable

difference in the lives of these families. We will be hosting again the week of March 10th, so stay tuned!

St George’s Soup Kitchen

We will resume our usual evening of serving in January (the third Monday of each month). Please contact Marcy Isdaner at

561-676-5251 if you would like to volunteer. This is a great social action activity for individuals and families.

Also, beginning in January, the Religious School children will be baking and decorating dessert cookies for St G’s. They will

be learning about hunger and ways we can help remedy this problem as part of the Religious School curriculum.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL David Sherman, MJEd

Director of Education

Join us for Shabbat Services on the

4th Friday of the Month

at 6:30pm for

“Simply Shabbat”

featuring a separate Prayer Adventure for

ages 5 through 10 in addition to our regular Shabbat Service.

This month’s Simply Shabbat will be held on January 25th.

Shalom!

As we head into the final stretch of this school year, I am pleased with what the students have learned thus far and look

with anticipation to the rest of the school year!

Classes resume on Tuesday, January 8th for 3rd – 6th grades and Shalom Chai, and on

Sunday, January 13th for the K – 6th grade students.

On Friday night, January 11th, we will celebrate “Grandfriends” Shabbat together with Rabbi Alon, Cantor Tanya, and

guest artist Mark Bloom @ 5:30pm and then Friday Night LIVE @ 6:30pm.

Although there will be no classes held on Sunday, January 20th, in commemoration of Martin Luther King Day, we will be

holding our 3rd Annual Congregational Beach Cleanup at Carlin Park, starting with a continental breakfast

sponsored by the Men’s Club at 8:30am. Bring the entire family and help beautify our Jupiter Beach! (See page 13 for

details.)

We will be celebrating Tu B’Shevat on Sunday, January 27th with special meals (seders) by grade, and also by taking a

walk around the Temple (weather permitting) to take in the beauty and appreciate our Temple setting.

I have started making my mid-year calls to Religious School families and have had many good conversations with parents

thus far. I am learning quite a bit in the process. If I have missed you and left you a message – don’t worry, I will try again.

If I don’t reach you, however, I DO want to talk with you – please call or email me and we can set up a time. I just don’t

want to fill up anyone’s voice mail with my ‘sorry I missed you’ messages. Another option is for you to grab me in the

halls when you come to drop off or pick up your children – this is not optimum as I am often quite busy at those times, but

we can at least touch base and set up a better meeting time.

I am always eager to hear your ideas about making our children’s time at Religious School even better for them – please

contact me if you have any ideas – for programs, or just general ideas that you think might enhance the experience!

Lastly, please keep the weekend of February 8th & 9th open – we will be hosting our first (hopefully annual) Shabbaton

in nature @ Jonathan Dickinson Park. First, Friday Night LIVE @ TBA on Friday night at 6:30pm with guest artist

Dan Nichols and then a day in nature on Saturday at the park. There will be no classes on Sunday, February 10th.

Please see the flyer on page 19 in the Scribe and be sure to keep up with the breaking news as it comes. This looks like a

wonderful way to spend Shabbat with your TBA family – together in nature!

Thanks!

David

BAR MITZVAH OF

BENJAMIN FRIEDMAN

It is with great pleasure that we announce that our son, Benjamin Forest, will be

called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on his birthday, January 19, 2013. Benjamin is

in 7th grade and attends the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy along with his sisters

Sara and Laura. Ben enjoys bicycling, skiing, and camping, but his two great

passions are playing alto saxophone and producing iPad movie productions with his

schoolmates. He can't wait to return to music camp in Maine as soon as the school

year ends.

Benjamin began playing saxophone just over a year ago with the inception of the Meyer Academy Middle School

Band. He plays by ear, and the first song he taught himself to play was the Hatikvah. It wasn't long before Meyer

faculty began asking him to play Hatikvah at school functions. It was natural for Ben to choose to incorporate his

musical talent as a key component of his Mitzvah project. Ben is arranging to visit local Jewish senior living

facilities to play Shabbat for residents on Friday nights.

We have watched Ben's strong Jewish identity blossom over the years with tremendous pride. Surrounded by

loving family and friends, we joyfully celebrate as Benjamin embraces the tradition of l'dor v'dor as a member of

the adult Jewish community,

BAT MITZVAH OF

KAYLA PROLOW

It is with great joy and pleasure that we announce that Kayla Amanda Prolow will be

called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on January 26, 2013.

Kayla is a seventh grader at The Benjamin School and enjoys singing, dance, cheerleading,

basketball, and spending her summers at the Jersey Shore. Kayla is very social and

thoroughly enjoys spending time with her friends and family. It has been such an amazing

journey to watch Kayla as she has transformed into such a bright, spirited, loving, and

positive young lady.

Kayla was very touched by the number of students in our community who are hungry on the weekends, and has

chosen to work with Blessings in a Backpack for her mitzvah project. This organization helps feed the children in

our public schools who are on the Free and Reduced Price Meal program. For many of these children, school meals

are their only meals. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little

preparation. Better test scores, improved reading skills, improved health and increased attendance have all been

attributed to the success of this program. Kayla has organized fundraisers and is currently adopting a local school in

our area to provide these backpacks starting in the new year.

I would like to thank Rabbi Alon, Cantor Tanya, David Sherman, and all of Kayla's fabulous, patient, and inspiring

teachers over the years for helping Kayla reach her goal of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. We feel incredibly fortunate to

be part of such a warm congregation, and look forward to celebrating this momentous occasion.

Bruce and Sharon Prolow
