Term 1 - Week 10, 2019
Principal’s MessageOur first term in 2019 has been such a successful and busy one. We conclude it on Friday 12 April with our pre-commemorative
ANZAC service at 9:15am, to which you are invited.
Our Harmony Day celebrations were marvellous, thanks to the efforts of staff, parents and students. Every class participated in learning activities to promote cooperation, kindness and friendship - the spirt of Harmony Day. The multicultural feast was enjoyed by all, thanks to the many families who cooked such delicious food to share. We appreciate the many parents who joined us on the day to help serve and clean up afterwards. Our special assembly was a lovely way to finish the day; with cultural performances by our dancers and Chinese students and introductions to our EaL/D students.
Parent-Teacher interviews are in full swing this week and we appreciate the enthusiasm and early engagement with your child’s teacher. You are able to discuss common goals for the remainder of the year and make plans about how you can both support your child. It is always good to focus on your child’s strengths and use these as a way to build successful pathways in those areas of learning that are less strong. Thank you to our teachers for the preparation and time put into this process and to our Year 4, 5 and 6 students who also come along to share in the interviews with parents and teachers.

What’s on?Tomorrow, our Year 3 and 5 students will participate in a NAPLAN. Online practice test. The practice test provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with the types of questions they will experience in NAPLAN Online. Students will complete the test using the same type of device they will be using for NAPLAN Online. The practice test also provides NAPLAN coordinators and test administrators with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the functions of the online assessment platform.
Two weeks without school can seem daunting for some families. I found this short article with ideas of healthy things to do with your children these school holidays, including: getting the kids in the kitchen; being active for at least 1 hour; taking them to the dentist; going on a geocaching adventure; scheduling swim time (maybe on warm days); letting them sleep and my favourite, let them be bored!
You don’t need to amuse your kids every minute of the school holidays — boredom is good for children. By pushing through boredom and entertaining themselves, kids learn to think more creatively and hone their problem-solving skills.
They’re also able to choose activities that match their mood. If your child’s feeling energetic, they’ll be physically active; if they’re tired, they may find a restful thing to do. Boredom also promotes resilience, as they learn to get through something that, to a child, can feel tough or stressful.

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Thank you to our parents and careers who follow our Kiss and Go Pick Up and Drop off procedures so well. It makes it much easier for our teachers to call your children if you are able to display your last name in the car window. If you do not have a sign provided by the council, an A4 page folded in half horizontally, with thick letters will do the trick!
Please remember to drive safely and follow the road rules, this includes driving around the block when requested, not turning over the double lines and keeping clear of ‘No Stopping’ areas.
If your child is not at Kiss & Go, please make the quick drive around the block. You will often find that this will make the line move faster for everyone, including yourself.
Finally, please remember to be respectful and follow staff instructions so that the area is as safe as possible.
Our new and improved equipment will be open just in time for our Autumn Fair. Parents, remember to supervise your children if they choose to try out the new equipment tomorrow.
More playground coming soon!
