In February of this year we farewelled a friend, colleague and well respected member of the Southland Multicultural Council. Donna along with Brian joined the Southland Multinations Society 15 years ago, with Brian be-coming president for 13 of those 15 years and Donna a committee member and secretary for 5+ years during that time. During their time on the Council, both Donna and Brian ensured the Multicultural Council be-came a recognised organisation within the Region and Donna was responsible for the establish-ment of an office in Invercargill, where both the migrant and wider community were able to seek advice support and understanding of the growing diversity in the region. Donna attended and spent many nights at potluck dinners, and when on the door her beautiful smile and amazing ability to remember names was always appreciated. As a librarian Donna used her skills to produce an interesting and informative newsletter, of which the format is still used today. She met in her work many of the new migrants to the city, and encouraged them to join the multicultural council. On many occasions Donna and Brian hosted them in their home which made them feel a welcome part of the Southland community, and to this day many look upon Donna as their NZ mum & Grandmother. Donna maintained contact with many of the new migrants she met over the years even those who moved away. Brian and Donna had 47 fabulous years together with 5 children and 12 grandchildren who will carry on the legacy which their mother has left. A fitting way to conclude is this statement made at her tangi. Donna was known as the

“Mother of nations here in Southland.”

Warm greetings;

It has been a very busy time for many activities. This month the SMC Council celebrated the international multicultural food festival. A paramount event on the calendar of Southland that celebrates and acknowledges the presence of cultural diversity through cuisines and performances. Many cultures are living in Southland from all around the world and next month, the Council is very proud to host a workshop about multiculturalism and cultural awareness. These workshops are happening all around the country. It is a project funded by the

New Zealand Commission for UNESCO and presented by former Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres who is also an honorary advisor to Multicultural New Zealand.

This event is happening on April 18, from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Southland Community House, 46 Kelvin Street. It is free for everyone, but we have to have RSVP by Monday April 13. We also will be having the potluck hold in SIT

on April 18, from 6:30 to 10:00pm.

The SMC Council extends its gratitude and thanks, to Violet Stewart, who was the coordinator of this event and her previous work aloud the new team to carry on with it. We thanked the project manager Prashant, his team of SIT student volunteers, the South American kids corner group, every food stalls indeed made all worth the effort. The ILT Foundation, Fonterra, Pride Real State, the public, our other financial sponsor, Darren Ludlow,

the presence of Ngai Tahu kaumatua Michael Skerrett and the MP Sarah. We are very grateful for your support.

Southland is an excellent region with its landscape, the farming industry that supports families and the economy of the country. The Southland community is proud of their diversity in heritage, their history, and ANZAC day remembrance, their creativity. It is proud of their businesses and their sports activities such as rugby, the ICC world cup cricket, netball, etc. They all are part of this equation that makes this region one of the best and

it continues helping to shape the fantastic value and honour to be New Zealanders.

Many thanks; Southland Multicultural Council Angela Pardo President.
