THREE POINT TURNCelebs and locals alike have changed gears, following suit on this latest retro redux
When Justin Timberlake wowed Washingtonians at the Verizon Center inFebruary, he crooned in a crisp, custom three-piece suit by Yves SaintLaurent. Ashton Kutcher donned a Dolce & Gabbana number in Berlinrecently and Grammy-winning rock band OK Go made three swaths ofpaisley togs their trademark look. The best-vest trend has hit the young,style-conscious contingent hard and the nation’s capital is no exception.Men of all ages are starting to lift the look popularized by the likes of Jay-Z and Tom Cruise—but it dates back to King Charles II. Anxious to asserthis own cultural clout, he started a royal revolution in menswear in 1666that still exists today, according to historian David Kuchta. These days, aclassic single-breasted jacket with a five-button vest can be a safe bet forWashington, longtime wardrobe and image consultant Mindy Petersonsays. But when navy or grey reigns, the look is at once boring andexceedingly formal. To pull off the cooler side of the look, “you have tocarry yourself like you own the room when you walk in,” says Peterson.Dubya could use a three-piecer, Peterson says, adding that “it demandsattention and respect.” Newly anointed DC Mayor Adrian Fenty wouldlook fantastic in such a style, she notes. “If he jumped on the trend, everyone would follow it.” David Eisele, owner of Davelle Clothiers inReston, says Fenty or not, requests for three-piece suits are on the rise. The younger, edgier three-piece wearing generation is “taking liberties, breaking the suit apart for work and play and using it as a lifestylecomponent,” Eisele says. For instance, one of the city’s trendiest has madea place for the three-piece at his tony nightspots: Omar Popal (see DC’s“Men of Style”) of Georgetown’s crepe escape Café Bonaparte is outfittingthe staff at his new Adams Morgan establishment, Napoleon, in the style-setting staple. And while Popal’s crew looks expertly chic, there are somedos and don’ts to donning the dandy’s favorite look. Unlike a jacket, which should not hug the frame, a vest should be worn trim to the bodywith the bottom button left undone, says Matt Landsburg, owner of EricFinn Custom Clothiers. He and legendary Washington haberdasher LouisEverard both prefer a vest with a full fabric front and back and a minimumof five buttons. Leaving the jacket unbuttoned to display the vest is also amust, Landsburg and Eisele agree. Everard adds it is “absolutely not okay”to wear a three-piece without a tie because it “ruins the suit’s integrity.”Unless of course you are hoping to cop to a rather different, infamousHollywood style: Saturday Night Fever.
