Agent X Code Book Challenge

A very exciting event is happening somewhere in Buckinghamshire this week.

Use the code book to work out what the messages say. They will give you a clue as to what might be happening and where it will take place. Instructions on how to use the code may be found on the right hand side of the code book. Watch out for the HH groups that will tell you how many words to use from each line.

Messages 4 -7 contain words that do not have a code already made up for them so you will have to use the table at the bottom of the code book to decode these words. Watch out for the H L H L (start table) and H M H M (stop table) groups. In WWII agents would have used the table to make up a code for names and locations. An example is shown below for how to use the table.

Example you might want to put into code the name jonFirst small letter j, use j in the first line of the table (though you could use a j anywhere)

Letter Lis the letter at the top of the same columnLetter A is the letter to the left of j and in the same column

K L lVI 1A.qiAjlA z •B l H 7. 'R · !

The code for j is LA. This is then repeated as agents in the field would have had crackly radios which were difficult to listen to. So the code for j is LA LA

SecondletteroUse o in the third line of the table (use a different line and column than before) Letter A is the letter at the top of the same columnLetter C is the letter to the lett·of o and in the same column

- . 1

The code for o is A C A C

Third letter nUse n in the fifth line of the table (use a different line and column than before) Letter W is the letter at the top of the same columnLetter E is the letter to the left of nand in the same column

wAp13n Ok D6 l l.l......

The code for n is WEWEThe code for jon is therefore L A L A ACAC WEWE

Message 7 is the competition question. This competition is open to all UK school children aged from 13 to 16. Work out the answer to message 7 and send it- in plain English- along with your full name, age, date of birth, parent/guardian(s) name, telephone number and full address including post code to:

[email protected]

The sender of the first correct answer to be drawn from all those received by 181August 2011 will win a prize.

If you are not eligible to enter the competition, you are still welcome to solve the message.
