WelcomeWe are delighted to welcome you on behalf of The Queen’s Nursing Institute to the Royal College of General Practitioners for our annual Healthcare in the Community conference.

We are thrilled that international speaker and journalist Suzanne Gordon will be joining us for both days of the conference. Suzanne is the author of both, ‘From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and Must Communicate to the Public’ and ‘When Chicken Soup Isn’t Enough: Stories of Nurses Standing Up for Themselves, Their Patients, and Their Profession’. Reflecting this, our theme for the conference this year is ‘From Silence to Voice.’ This theme reflects the current issues facing the services in which nurses are working within community and primary care settings. We know that community nurses and their colleagues have many challenges in the workplace today, but we also know that the nurses, patients, families, carers and communities hold the solutions. We hope that you enjoy the conference and will leave enthused with new ideas and contacts to take back into your practice.

We would like to thank all of our most generous speakers who have kindly accepted the invitation to speak at the conference this year. Our wide range of speakers reflects the importance that we, and they, place on working with partners in the delivery of excellent nursing care. This engagement and collaboration outside of the nursing profession also provides an opportunity to reflect on the wider issues which impact on the health and wellbeing of our communities.

For the fourth year, in response to the overwhelming positive feedback, we have poster presentations from nurses, which reflect the diversity and innovation that is found in community nursing practice. Please do make time to look at the posters and speak to the nurses about their pioneering work.

At the end of the first conference day, there will be a reception sponsored by Hallam Medical, to which all delegates are cordially invited. This will provide an opportunity to network and share your views with others on what you have experienced at the conference.

We are delighted that George Plumptre, the Chief Executive of the National Garden Scheme (NGS), is speaking at the conference again this year. The NGS funds the Queen’s Nurse Network and the activities we offer to support the professional development of the Queen’s Nurses in delivering excellence in practice. The NGS was originally founded over 90 years ago in 1927 as the fundraising arm of the QNI and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the NGS for their long-standing support of our mission to support best practice in community and primary care nursing.

Finally, thank you to our sponsors, the exhibitors, media partners and delegates, without whom this conference would not be possible.

Dr Crystal Oldman CBE, Chief ExecutiveDr John Unsworth, Chair
