Summer has typically been a quiet time for the League. Summer vacations, family picnics, barbeques, going ‘down the shore’. Our programs committee was working overtime when we came up with our July and August programs. At the beginning of each program, former League President and celebrity, John Gilchrist sternly chided me ‘Kevin, we never have programs in July/ August’ As each program ended John again approached me, this time saying how much he enjoyed the program. We are gratified that a tough customer like John and the other members who attended enjoyed each venue and menu.

Our Architects League’s 2007 Special Member Event to Washington – Modernism @ Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Green House at the National Building Museum on Saturday June 9 proceeded on an ad-hoc basis.

The June 21 - Membership Meeting- How to photograph buildings was held at the Wyckoff-Y focused on marketing Architectural services. We presented awards to the winners of our banner stand competition: The Atelier at West Essex High School senior students Jared Shadabb and Richard Buonomo (now a first Year Cornell Architecture Student) who under the guidance of High School Teacher AIA-ALNNJ Associate member Rich Bettini, Associate AIA created a Bucky-Fuller tensegrity banner stand.

The AIA-ALNNJ Meeting - at Skylands Manor on July 19 featured a presentation by Leo Alessi, Account Executive at DFB Sales Inc. in Long Island City, New York on “Acrylic Copolymers and Cement: The Technology Behind Durable Applied Surfaces”

Afterward members enjoyed a screening of the 2006 documentary film “Sketches of Frank Gehry” directed by Sydney Pollack.

AIA-ALNNJ Eighth Annual Golf Outing at High Mountain Golf Club in Franklin Lakes was great fun despite having been rescheduled to August 6th due to inclement weather. Many thanks to Kim, her committee and our sponsors for a great outing.

The whirlwind Architects League’s 2007 Special Member Event to Philip Johnson’s Glass house and Yale University tour on Saturday July 28 was a great

success culminating in an enjoyable meal in South Norwalk, Ct.

Our August 16 meeting was held at the historic Alpine Pavilion, an open air stone picnic pavilion built by the Civil Works Administration in 1934 and located adjacent to the Alpine Boat Basin in Palisades Interstate Park.

Danny Wood gave a business development presentation on “The Professional Advantage – A Systematic Approach to Client Development”. Our second speaker, Matthew Goercke, regarded as an expert in the field of memory development spoke on “Discover Your Memory Power” His interesting demonstration was punctuated by a bat flying through the pavilion in search of pesky/ tasty insects.

Dinner was a summer themed Jamaican feast prepared by David of the Jamaican Connection in Teaneck.

Our September 12 – 17- Architects League’s 2007 Special Member Event The 2007 OPEN HOUSE LONDON WEEKEND proceeded on an ad-hoc basis.

We look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events and encourage everyone to become more involved with our League Committees and events. Contact [email protected] for further information.

Private Residence, Tenafly, NJ

The owners wished to update their residence with the construction of a new addition which included a first floor family room and an updated second floor master bedroom including a master bathroom suite with a tiled platform whirlpool, a glass enclosed shower, a privacy enclosed toilet, a dressing area and additional closet space. The new addition must match the existing exterior materials (siding and slate roof shingles).

Fidelity Investment Center, Morristown, NJ.

LAN is the architect and engineer of record for this new 8,000 sf project. The building was designed over an existing foundation. The existing roof and structure were raised hydraulically in order to accommodate the new tenant. New exterior walls were designed to reflect the historic nature of the downtown district.

Lyndhurst Recreation Center, Lyndhurst, NJ

This building is a reuse of an existing, 16,000 sf bus repair facility. The program called for the building to be converted to a youth recreational facility, including a multi-use sports court and wrestling area. Significant challenges, both environmental and architectural, were encountered in the conversion of the facility from a bus garage to a recreational facility for children. The project was completed in June 2007

Architectural League members, it is once more my honor to be Editor of the Leagueline’s 4Q issue. This year we have returned to the theme of WHAT WE DO. It is an opportunity to share our creative ideas and professional work with our colleagues. Over the past four years of our new Leagueline’s life, we have used our fourth quarter issue to play with our imaginations, our passions and our best works.

The issue has always required a bit of a kick start at first, getting the attention of very busy architects for a long enough time to gather a few photos of “that special project” and to communicate some information about it. Many thanks to those who made that effort to help us prepare this special issue, which many say they look forward to as their favorite.

I have had the privilege of working with our greatly talented graphic designer Bruce Zahor and with the exciting presentation of color images, something everyone enjoys, but especially visually oriented individuals like architects.

Check out this year’s submissions and share the pride of your fellow architects in the articulate practice of a constructive profession. We have that very special opportunity to shape the environment of and for our fellow human beings.

Private Residence, Hoboken NJ

The residence previously existed as a three unit building and was transformed to a one family residence during the renovation. A rear addition was incorporated into the house to bring the outside in. All windows and doors are operable to allow natural ventilation throughout the house. The sloped roof gestures to the afternoon sun to allow a gentle wash of light.

High Mountain School, North Haledon, NJ (Under Construction)

This school addition provided the opportunity to give a 1960s facility a much-needed facelift. Existing entrances were plain and ill-defined, but the new addition offers inviting steps up to a covered canopy and vestibule. The sloped roofs and belfry-like cupola recall notions of the little red schoolhouse. Housed in the addition are a large media center, music room, art room, computer lab, and four classrooms. Scheduled completion date: September 2007.

A new mixed-use (96 apts./6,000 SF retail) in Paterson, comprised of a renovated existing mill and a new 11-story addition. The challenge was to find a contemporary architecture solution that was in scale with pedestrian life in the neighborhood, compatible to the existing historic mill structure, and take advantage of astounding views over the adjacent elevated railroad and highways.

NK Architects submitted by Michael Gorman, AIA

Stevens Institute of Technology, Babbio Center Hoboken, NJ

The Lawrence T. Babbio, Jr. Center for Technology Management is a new, six-story, 95,000 SF, academic building situated above a four-story parking garage on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology. This building houses academic classrooms, lecture halls, conference areas, a library, faculty offices, a wide variety of flexible spaces, and a four-story atrium with views to the Hudson River and the Manhattan Skyline. The building’s rectilinear form is juxtaposed with the canted stainless steel clad classrooms that literally break out of the box. A landscaped plaza is created on the roof of the parking garage, as a unifying element for the surrounding academic buildings.

Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, NJ

NK’s Healthcare Group is working closely with Holy Name Hospital to design a new 41-bay, technically advanced state-of-the-art Emergency Department. The project is being developed through a highly interactive design process. Working with the latest AutoCADD technology, advanced 3D visualization tools and NK’s proprietary Extranet, all stakeholders can easily view the projects progress and provide comments on all design decisions.

Hudson City Savings Bank, Executive Wing Renovation Paramus, NJ

The renovation consisted of demolishing 8,800 sq. ft. of the fourth floor and creating new Executive Office facilities including detailed high end paneling, trim and custom built-in millwork throughout the space.

Ramapo College, Academic Wing Expansion Mahwah, NJ

The new 88,000 sq. ft. seven story building addition required programming with the academic staff to ascertain the requirements of the space. The building includes two tiered auditoriums, projection rooms, breakout rooms, specialized office suites, faculty offices, traditional and smart classrooms and computer labs. An independent 3,400 sq. ft. greenhouse building is to be used as a greenhouse/working classroom.

Jersey City Board of Education - P.S. 34 Jersey City, NJ

Over the life of the building, water infiltration through the facade has severely damaged the structural integrity of the building, thereby posing a hazard. The project endeavors to restore or replace the damaged terra cotta ornamentation, to repoint the entire facade with mortar matching the original recipe and color, and to blend into the fabric of the facade, new face brick matching the original variegated, iron spot brick.

Design-Build – Residential Development Bergenfield, NJ

Managed through the design-build branch of Altman Architects, this newly designed 3,400 square foot residence features five bedrooms, three and one-half baths, a one-car garage, a two-story entrance foyer and many spacious rooms. Additional features of the house include custom interior wood columns and moldings, molded brick on the exterior, high performance windows and hardwood floors throughout. Construction began August 2007 and is scheduled for completion and will be placed on the market early Spring of 2008.

South River Public Library, South River, NJ

The South River Library sits on a tree covered sloped site. The project involves a 19,000 square foot addition and renovation to the existing 9,000 square foot library. The design is intended to connect the interior of the library to the park-like setting of the surrounding. The sloped terrain allows the views from the public spaces to open directly into the canopy of the trees. The project is scheduled for completion in 2008.

Members enjoy visit to Philip Johnson’s Glass HouseOn Saturday July 28th, the League offered members a special Saturday trip to visit Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan and Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The Glass House tours (which started this year) are operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and are fully booked through 2007 and are already hard to get for 2008. The tour of Johnson’s property included multiple buildings that span the entirety of his career, from the iconic Glass House (completed in 1949) right through to Da Monstra (completed in 1994). Additional buildings on the tour included the brick Guest House, the partially underground Painting Gallery and the skylit Sculpture Gallery. After the Glass House tour, a drive through the back roads of New Canaan (led by New Canaan resident Toby McCarty, AIA) gave the group an opportunity to see many of the unique modern and historic private residences as well as the “starter castles” scattered throughout the town.
