A Message from the Principal Team

Dear families,

Welcome back to what will undoubtedly be another amazing term at Wandong Primary School! I hope you have all had a chance to rest and recharge and to spend some time with people special to you over the holiday break.

I was lucky enough to escape the cold Melbourne weather for a brief time and enjoyed some sunshine and surf in the lovely Hawaiian islands. It is good to be back on home soil, however it has been a BIG adjustment coming back to the freezing temperatures here in Wandong (I’m pumping my heater!!)- haha!

This term promises to be another great one, with lots of fun activities and excursions planned throughout the coming months, not to mention the ongoing excellence in teaching and learning. I am most looking forward to the upcoming Wakkakiri performance and Education Week celebrations!

Little Fort Bridge: A big thank you to two of our parents, Yvette Curlis and Yorin Miller for kindly fixing the broken bridge on our Little Fort. This was a great service to the school and it is wonderful to see our playground back in action and our F-2 students enjoying themselves.

Earn and Learn: It’s time to decide what we want to order for our school! Thank you to all of the families who have been diligently saving their Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers. In total we have accumulated 28,620 Earn and Learn points (not dollars- we wish!), which can now be used to purchase specific educational resources for our school. We will update you when we know what we will be receiving- how exciting!

Silver Coin Challenge: The totals are in from our term 2, Silver Coin Challenge, with families raising an incredible…drum roll…$1414.95!! It was a close final sprint, however Foundation M pulled ahead, raising a total of $202.45. Stay tuned in the coming weeks FM, as your class reward is announced…

Thank you to all of the families who donated spare change throughout the challenge, it is greatly appreciated and will mean that we are able to further supply our students with the best educational experience possible, by purchasing more resources and equipment for our school.

Staffing Announcement: We would like to welcome Olivia Mathews to our Education Support Staff team. Olivia began in classrooms on Monday and enjoyed getting to know the students that she will be working with. We look forward to her settling in and getting to know the Wandong family. Welcome!

Mrs Cole & Principal Appointment: As you would have been aware, a letter was sent home to families yesterday regarding the successful appointment of Mrs Cole as Senior Education Improvement Leader- the role that she has been undertaking for the past twelve months. It is with mixed emotions that we congratulate Mrs Cole on this huge achievement. After ten and half years at Wandong Primary School, Mrs Cole will be missed by teachers, students and families alike, however we know that she will go on to do amazing things in the field of education and will now be able to spread her impact beyond just one school. As always, Wandong Primary will continue to be one of Mrs Cole’s schools, in her new SEIL capacity.

Attached to Mrs Cole’s letter was some information from our school council regarding the process of appointing a principal. As with the recruitment of any person within a school setting, there are a series of actions which must occur within the Department of Education to prepare to fill such a role. These procedures are carried out externally to the school and can take some time. Until this time, Mr Warren will continue on in the Acting Principal role and we thank families for their understanding while this process takes place.

Wishing students and teachers a wonderful first week back at school- keep smiling, keep learning!

Stephanie Pollock - Acting Assistant Principal

Indonesian News Year 3-6 students have now completed their Indonesian studies for the year. Year 5-6 have been learning to describe people and they have just completed a poster to describe a famous person. Year 3-4 students have been learning about Indonesian houses. In second semester, the current

Digital Technology room will be transformed into a new Indonesian room. Everyone is welcome to pop in for a look. Here is a picture of students playing a traditional Indonesian shell game called Congklak. It is a game of skill and strategy and is played widely in Indonesia and South East Asia.

Victorian Premiers’

Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Wandong Primary School

is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance

of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children

to read a set number of books by 6th September 2019.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents

and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the

Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view
