Preservice Song: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not; As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside!

Welcome & Announcements Invocation & Call to Worship

Leader: In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen. Leader: O God, our Father, You seek people who will worship You in spirit and in truth; and so we ask You to inspire and bless the worship week by week in this church, in words and music, prayers and hymns, psalms and lessons. Open the hearts and lips of those who worship You today all over the world, that all of us may listen with an alert conscience to the preaching of Your Word and come to receive the bread and cup with true repentance and faith. We ask this in the name of Him through whom alone our worship is acceptable to You: our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Congregation: Amen.

Opening Song: “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)”

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name.

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning; It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name.

Page 4: “The Psalmist Formerly Known as Prince”

4

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger, Your name is great and Your heart is kind; For all Your goodness I will keep on singing, Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name.

And on that day when my strength is failing, The end draws near and my time has come; Still my soul sings Your praise unending, Ten thousand years and then forevermore.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name.

Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name. I’ll worship Your holy name.

Lord I’ll worship Your holy name.

Confession of Sins Leader: Merciful God, You made us in Your image, with a mind to know You, a heart to love You, and a will to serve You. But our knowledge is imperfect, our love inconstant, our obedience incomplete. Day by day, we fail to grow into Your likeness. In Your tender love, forgive us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Congregation: Amen.

Assurance of Forgiveness Leader: While it is true that we have sinned, it is a greater truth that we are forgiven through God’s love in Jesus Christ. To all who humbly seek the mercy of God I say, in Jesus Christ your sin is forgiven. Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Psalm Reading Psalm 146 ESV 8:15am Cindy Wilson

11:00am John Wiemer

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! 2I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 3Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. 4When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.

5Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, 6who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; 7who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; 8the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. 9The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. 10The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord!

Epistle James 2:1-10,14-18 ESV

My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?

8If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.

Holy Gospel Mark 7:31-37 ESV

31Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.

Page 6: “The Psalmist Formerly Known as Prince”

6

33And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. 34And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Sermon Hymn: “Jesus Shall Reign”

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun Does its successive journeys run His kingdom spread from shore to shore Till sun shall rise and set no more

Blessings abound where’er He reigns The pris’ner leaps to lose his chains The weary find eternal rest And all the sons of want are blessed

To our King be highest praise Rising through eternal days Just and faithful He shall reign Jesus shall reign

People and realms of every tongue Dwell on His love with sweetest song And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His Name

To our King be highest praise Rising through eternal days Just and faithful He shall reign Jesus shall reign

Let every creature rise and bring Blessing and honor to our King Angels descend with songs again And earth repeat the loud amen

To our King be highest praise Rising through eternal days Just and faithful He shall reign Jesus shall reign!

Sermon: “The Psalmist Formerly Known as Prince” Psalm 146

Psalm 146 is about putting our trust in the proper place and not in princes. The promise of justice from God seems timely and needed too, especially when we see so much corruption today. God redeems the otherwise hopeless situation.

In God We Trust

Why isn’t any prince worthy of our ultimate trust?

The appeal and danger of statism

In God We Trust

Reasons to trust God…

1) Creation 2) Character 3) Compassion

What action of the Lord means the most to you in this Psalm?

Life Group Questions

Head (what?)

Why is misplacing your trust so detrimental, yet easy to do? What character traits make one worthy of trust? How are hope, faith, and trust linked? Heart (so what?)

From what “prison” has God set you free? To whom do you turn to for help? How has God proven His trustworthiness to you? Hands (now what?)

How are you demonstrating you are trustworthy follower of Jesus? What can you do to encourage others to trust in God? What does “living life trusting in God” look like? Affirmation of Faith All: Praise the Lord! Our soul praises You, O Lord. We will sing praises to You as long as we live. We will not put our trust in our government or in influential people, for when they die, their influence and power are gone. We are blessed because we hope and trust in You, O God who created the world and everything in it. You were a faithful God to our spiritual fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and You remain unchanging and faithful to us in this century and on to the end of time. You uphold those of us who are weighed down with the cares of this world, and You feed those who are hungry with the bread of life. You set prisoners free with the assurance that their sins are forgiven and that You are in control of the events of their lives. You give sight of understanding to those who are blind in their sin. You lift up those who are bowed down, and You love those who are righteous. You watch over us aliens in a sinful world, and You are a father to the orphaned and a comforter to the widowed. You do not allow the plans of the wicked to flourish or to come to completion. You will reign forever and for all generations. Praise the Lord!

Prayers Leader: Almighty God, You delight to take care of all our physical needs so that we come to know that You are the only source of everything good and that neither our work and worry nor Your gifts can do us any good without Your blessing. And so help us to give up our trust in creatures and to put our trust in You alone. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Congregation: Amen.

Words of Institution Preparation for The Lord’s Table Holy Communion: We celebrate the Lord’s Supper today by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ which is given in, with and under the bread and wine. In this meal, we receive the forgiveness of sins, the promise of life everlasting and the strength we need to live faithfully. We invite to the Lord’s Table baptized believers who are truly repentant of sin and seek the grace in this meal, forgiving of one another as we have been forgiven, and gladly believe and confess the Real Presence of Christ in this meal. All people are welcome to come forward for a blessing. Participating in the meal is how the church proclaims the Lord’s death, resurrection, and imminent return. Red wine is used to best visually convey the blood of Christ. For personal or medical reasons, white grape juice is also available in the center of the trays.

Communion Song: “The Table”

I will feast at the table of the Lord I will feast at the table of the Lord I won’t hunger anymore at His table

I will feast at the table of the Lord I will feast at the table of the Lord I won’t hunger anymore at His table

Come all you weary come and find His yoke is easy His burden light He is able He will restore At the table of the Lord

There is peace at the table of the Lord There is peace at the table of the Lord I won’t worry anymore at His table

There is healing at the table of the Lord There is healing at the table of the Lord I won’t suffer anymore at His table

Page 10: “The Psalmist Formerly Known as Prince”

Come all you weary come and find His yoke is easy His burden light He is able He will restore At the table of the Lord

I know He has a place for me Oh what joy will fill my heart With the saints around the mercy seat of God

Come all you weary come and find His yoke is easy His burden light He is able He will restore At the table of the Lord At the table of the Lord
