ED’S LETTER
This issue could only be a pink issue, what with February being the month of lurve! And pink works it. Pink owers, pink cupcakes, cards, chocolates … It’s everywhere – even Moët has a pink version! Never has a colour had such a strong signi cance or following. And all this for a shade not even on the original colour wheel.
Interestingly enough, pink as a colour was rst recorded in the late 17th century, and has since played an important role in several sectors. In nancial circles, pink is associated with London’s Financial Times, founded in 1893. The distinctive salmon-pink colour of its newsprint was used mainly as a way for the newspaper to distinguish itself from its competitors. In health circles, ‘in the pink’ is an expression denoting ‘in good condition’ or in ‘good health’, while in political circles, the word ‘pinko’, a watered-down Red, is a derogatory term used to describe a person with mild communist or socialist beliefs.
And you thought pink was just a colour! In colour psychology, pink is thought to have a calming e ect. One shade, known as ‘drunk-tank pink’ is sometimes used in prisons to calm inmates, while sports teams are known to paint their opponents’ locker rooms pink to keep the players passive and less energetic. Good to know!
Pink has its place in architecture too. One of the most famous examples is the city of Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Certainly a sight to behold (I speak from experience). It was given the name Pink City in 1876, after the entire city was painted pink in honour of the Prince of Wales’ visit. Today the Old City (known as the Four-Wall City) is still painted and maintained in pink. Another pink historical building is the government house in Buenos Aires,
Argentina. Known as La Casa Rosada (‘The Pink House’), it’s the seat of the executive power. It was painted pink in the 1800s during the reign of President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, as the colour combines the red of the Federales and white for the Unitarios, the two main political parties of that era. Another city tinged with pink is Marrakech, referred to as the Rose City. Its salmon-pink-coloured buildings are the result of the red clay of its surrounding terrain.
And lastly we have our own pink contributions – the Westcli in Joburg, and Cape Town’s Mount Nelson Hotel. James B Sherwood, the former chairman of the Westcli , kept the colour of the original cluster homes that were to become the hotel’s rooms, and retained its Tuscan style, thanks to his own love a air with Northern Italy. The Nellie is said to have been originally painted a cheerful pink to celebrate the end of World War One. Pink, then, if you’ll excuse the pun, has a colourful history.
This month we allow our blushing issue to take on a tinge of green too in our gorgeous Gardens feature, which looks at new trends for today’s busy urban dweller who faces space and time constraints, plus we reveal designer garden accessories. (My green-thumb expertise is more wishful thinking than anything else. In fact, my thumb is more of a light shade of yellow, if the leaves of my pot plants are anything to go by.) But whatever colour tickles your fancy this month, make sure it’s bold, beautiful and more to the point, alive!

DIAMOND IN THE BUFFI was very interested in your article on Japan. But I must disagree with you on the onsen. Etiquette demands that one is spotlessly clean when entering the onsen – you state that the washing is done afterwards. Quoting from my travel friend, Denise Scarrott’s, travelogue: ‘There is strict etiquette which must be observed when using an onsen. The most important thing is that the baths are for soaking in only and not for washing in. There is an anteroom with shelves and baskets in which to put your clothes and anything else you may have brought along, and as this is Japan, everything can safely be left there, even jewellery, watches, etc. Then you enter the bathroom itself, which is usually very humid as the bath is lled with hot natural spring water. Along the wall of the room you nd taps or showers on exible hoses together with soap and shampoo and small wooden stools. You may sit on the stools, facing the wall for the sake of decorum, and must not sit directly on the oor. You are expected to wash yourself and your hair thoroughly rst. If you do not wash your hair, it must be pinned up, and under no circumstances must it touch the water. Once you have rinsed o all traces of soap or shampoo, you may enter the hot bath. The temperature is usually between 38 ºC and 42 ºC and deep enough for an adult to sit submerged up to the neck. No towels are allowed in the water, and you can only use a very small towel to cover yourself as you approach the bath or to wrap around your head. Men generally sit with the towel folded on top of their heads. If the towel falls into the water it must be wrung out outside the bath.’Jo Meintjes, Parkhurst
Many thanks for your letter. Our journalist wrote from what he observed while sitting in the onsen, but it’s great to get more insight into this wonderful tradition.
SPARKLING PRAISEEvery single time I open The Property Magazine, I feel like I’m opening a jewellery box. The cover, the contents, the paper, the photography, the ads, the colours! Every little details jumps out at me like a sparkling gem, and I savour each page as I slowly browse through the magazine before actually settling down to read the articles. Each high-quality edition is such a treat. Thank you!Hanni Bazley, Vermont/Hermanus

1The Mount Grace Spa’s flotation chamber. 2The property extends over 10 acres of lush gardens
and bush. 3A dining sensation, the Rambling Vine restaurant. 4All the rooms boast lovely garden
or mountain views. 5The luxury villa opens up onto its own private terrace with plunge pool.
Visit thepropertymag.co.za for other
decadent getaway destinations.
Situated in the rolling hills of the Magaliesberg on 10 acres of
lush grounds is the charming Mount Grace Country House
& Spa, home to pure style, luxury and good old-fashioned
service. Exuding country style and natural elegance, this
award-winning getaway oozes old-world charm. Throw off your
dusty city coat and be enveloped in the peace and quiet of the hotel.
Spectacular mountain views, the sounds of nature and the pervading
calm all contribute to your escape from the hustle and bustle of life.
Despite describing itself as a ‘country hideaway’, this hotel is
anything but rural. Instead you will discover a combination of old and
new architecture infused with sophisticated interiors, where bright
colours, such as fuchsia and lime, are juxtaposed with one another and
complemented by a variety of textures. The result is a real blend of
old- school glamour and stylish modern touches.
Within the sprawling grounds is a melange of facilities, including a
tennis court, several swimming pools (one heated), a gym, a bar and
games room, two restaurants and the renowned Mount Grace Spa.
Steam rooms, Jacuzzis, a flotation tank and relaxing treatments make
this one spa stopover you have to make! There are 18 treatment rooms
where qualified therapists attend to your every need to ensure you
unwind in body and mind. Pure relaxation in beautiful surrounds adds to
the experience, and it’s no wonder the spa was declared the winner of
the 2011 World Luxury Spa Awards in the Day Spa Country category.
With all this relaxation you’re sure to work up an appetite, and Mount
Grace’s two restaurants, under the careful tutelage of Executive Chef
Franc Lubbe, don’t disappoint. Twist restaurant offers fun, summery,
light meals and buffets throughout the day. Its breakfasts and Sunday
lunches are legendary and are worth the one-hour drive from Joburg.
The Rambling Vine is the à la carte dining option and has been
voted as one of the Top 10 Hotel Restaurants in South Africa by Eat Out
magazine. Decadent decor greets you at the door as you are invited
into the romantic and intimate setting. Luxury fabrics rein free, from the
upholstery to the heavy drapes, and there is a clear sense of East meets
West, thanks to engraved wooden room dividers and lanterns that
mingle with crystal chandeliers and antique furniture. We love the bright
pink oversized armchairs, which are reminiscent of ancient thrones.
White linen tablecloths, dinner by candlelight, a glass of sherry on arrival
and wonderful staff complete the scene.
On our visit we found the cuisine to be sensational, a kaleidoscope
of flavours well paired with wine by our talented sommelier, Lerato.
We enjoyed salmon pastrami and blue cheese Stilton soufflé for
starters. Mains included kingklip on vanilla risotto (the strangest and
most delicious thing we have ever tasted) and melt-in-your-mouth
Karoo lamb shank.
Once you are completely relaxed and indulgently full, the final step
is to retreat to your gorgeous room or villa, by chauffeured golf cart, of
course, for some private downtime.
The Mount Grace has 121 rooms and suites to cater for different
tastes and budgets. Enjoy lush English garden views, dam views and, of
course, the Magaliesberg mountain range. For an indulgent experience,
treat yourself to a villa, which boasts its own mini sitting room, wooden
balcony and plunge pool.
So if you ever find yourself on the winding roads leading into
the Magaliesberg, pop in at the Mount Grace Country House & Spa.
Whether it’s for the afternoon or the weekend, it is a truly memorable
getaway. +27 (0)14 577 5600, mountgrace.co.za

Romance your signifi cant other with teas, sweet treats, hotspots and home-baked cutie pies
JUSTIN KRAMER from Behind
Bars and BRANDON GRUSD
from the Bar Academy have united to
launch the ground-breaking mobile
molecular bar service, Mixology SA.
Q What inspired the concept of molecular mixology?Molecular cocktails are a progression
from molecular gastronomy, the
application of scientifi c processes to the
enhancement of food. For us it came
about through our frustration with the
lack of innovation in the bar industry.
With molecular mixology, drinks don’t
need to follow the conventional methods
any more, which makes for a new and
exciting drinks revolution.
Q Describe your signature molecular cocktail. We come up with new cocktail ideas
every day, but it all started with our most
famous molecular cocktail, the Orange
and Sage Martini, served on a plate
with alcoholic vanilla panna cottas and
mandarin apricot spheres (encapsulated
liquid cocktails).
Q Molecular cocktails play on all the senses. How is this possible? The idea of breathing in your drink isn’t
as foreign as you may think. Concepts
such as dry ice mist and essential
fl avours allow us to add a signifi cant
twist to the generic drink. Your sense
of smell enables your taste receptors to
interpret the fl avours in your mouth.
Q How do cocktails link in with team building?Mixology SA offers a number of team-
building activities, such as Cocktail,
Barista, Molecular and Winemaking
team building, as well as our exclusive
Directors whisky-tasting experience. We
offer our clients a range of specialised
beverage options.

MARK STEER of Green Green
Aloe is an expert in indigenous gardens
and design. We chat to him about
his passion.
Q When did you fi rst discover your green fi ngers? It was at an early age: I spent my
youth at my grandparents’ farm on the
Vaal River and received a fi rst-class
horticultural education from my little
English granny! Gardening has always
been second nature to me and nature has
always fascinated me. It is truly food for
the soul.
Q Tell us about your design background.I began as an apprentice at an industrial
design company. I love to use my hands
and really enjoy the creative aspect
of design. There is no greater joy than
to look at something I have created
with my own hands. Landscaping
design appeals to me, as the product
continues to develop and grow after we
are long gone.
Q You were involved in moving trees for the Gautrain …Saving over 100 large trees from certain
destruction during the construction
of the Gautrain is without a doubt one
of my fondest memories. The trees
were relocated to various parks around
Gauteng and are now providing shade
and oxygen, rather than fi rewood and
carbon dioxide.
Q Why is an indigenous garden so benefi cial?Indigenous plants generally require
less care, less water and can better
tolerate local conditions. They are also
less harmful to the local species of a
particular area and attract local wildlife.
This benefi ts and gives balance to your
garden and the surrounding environment.

Anne Porter Knight Frank has the exclusive mandate to market a landmark home in Upper Constantia. Priced at R28,5 million, the home is the epitome of elegant living in this exclusive Cape Town suburb
The quality of this Upper Constantia home is uncommon anywhere in the world, remarks Lanice Steward, MD of Anne Porter Knight Frank.
Sited on a 4 500m2 erf just off Price Drive, the
home has 1 000m2 of floor space, making it almost five times the size of most other properties in the suburb, says Lanice.
Set in a partially landscaped garden styled in the Provençal tradition, the double-storey home is ideal for the entertainer, with six reception/dining rooms, four large bedrooms, gym, library/study, home cinema and central vacuum system.
Each room in the home is air-conditioned and many have underfloor heating. The bedrooms are all en suite, and there is a quartet of large balconies with views that extend across the grounds to Klein Constantia, the Steenberg vineyards, Tokai Forest, False Bay, Vlakkenberg and Constantiaberg.
For the homeowner, entertaining is a breeze, thanks to the massive, 150m2 farm-style kitchen, temperature-controlled wine cellar, scullery, servants’ quarters, separate private garden flat, four garages and ample additional parking space.
The home security system also impresses, with electric fencing, CCTV cameras and burglar alarm.
The property’s grounds, with their olive trees, lavender and herb gardens, four water features, koi pond and sparkling swimming pool, enhance the Mediterranean feel of the home. The garden is kept lush by an automatic irrigation system fed by its own borehole and by a mountain stream that tumbles through the property.
‘One hesitates these days to describe any home as really beautiful, but that would be justified in the case of this superior residence,’ Lanice says. +27 (0)21 671 9120,

GARDENS
Words Genevieve Fisher and Nicky Manson
Whether they are vertical, edible or public, gardens of all shapes and sizes are an important feature of life in sunny South Africa
We South Africans have a lot to be grateful for. Not only do we have an enviable climate
that allows for an idyllic outdoor lifestyle, but we also have some unique fl ora that’s
endemic to this part of the world. As South Africans of all descriptions become more
appreciative of our fl ora, the need for its conservation and the benefi ts of sustainable
gardening, we look at the current gardening trends that are shaping our cities.

GARDENSGARDENS The Vertical Garden
The vertical garden is the brainchild
of French botanist, Patrick Blanc, who
transformed the faces of many of
downtown Paris’ buildings with his green
wonder walls. South Africa is following this
trend and we are seeing vertical gardens in
commercial spaces and homes alike.
Vertical gardens recycle the air in an offi ce
space, and because plants absorb noise
pollution, vertical garden walls also act
as noise buffers. (Central One restaurant
in the Radisson Blu Gautrain hotel in
Sandton has a unique example of this type
of garden, designed by Sava Spasojevic
of Succulent Art.) And in the home, it
makes sense with regards to today’s
lifestyle, where living spaces are smaller
and gardens have become a luxury. It is an
ideal way to include the ‘outdoors’ in your
living space with little fuss.
According to Brendon Edwards of Brendon
Edwards Landscapes in KwaZulu-Natal,
vertical gardens have become popular
because ‘you can create 120m2 of garden
in a 20m2 space.’ He adds, ‘Aesthetically
they provide a very powerful image
because you experience the whole garden
immediately, whereas a conventional
garden is experienced through a horizontal
vista and needs to be traversed in order
to experience it. Vertical gardens offer a
completely different experience of time
and space.’ But how does one look after
this type of garden? Images of standing
on a ladder with a hosepipe dripping onto
a Persian rug come to mind, but Brendon
explains that the plants employed are
generally low maintenance and don’t
require soil. ‘A frame is built on the wall
over which a waterproof membrane is
fi xed. Over this is an inert matrix that acts
as the soil into which the chosen plants are
bedded and through which a micro drip
irrigation system is woven. This never has
to been cleaned.’
Tractor Outdoor, an independent outdoor
media company, has taken this type of
garden to another level by using it as an
innovative advertising hook for Emirates
Airlines. The unique creation in Cape
Town’s Kloof Street cleverly updates
old cement facades and supports Cape
Town’s World Design Capital 2014 win
by actively integrating art with public
and private spaces. Tractor Outdoor’s
Simon Wall says, ‘In cities where space is
at a premium, initial briefs to landscapers
are often to make the most of a limited
space, to screen off unsightly walls or
add another texture. Vertical gardens
respond to these challenges beautifully.’
Tractor Outdoor used a hybrid succulent
of the Graptoveria variety for its aqua
colour, to represent the sea, as well as for
its hardiness and impressive growth rate,
while the continents are represented by
Aptenia cordifolia. The plants are grown
in a biodynamic felt specially imported
from Germany. It has a fully integrated
hydroponic drip irrigation system that
waters and fertilizes the 12m x 6m garden.
According to Nicholas Whitehorn, Tractor
Outdoor’s landscaping consultant, a
vertical garden can take on any theme or
design: ‘Using an abundance of fynbos
and indigenous varieties would translate
into a natural tapestry. Using less planting
varieties in shapes and patterns, one could
achieve a more contemporary design.
‘Walls can also be planted with beautiful
yet functional herbs and vegetables.’

What looks like a small duplex at the edge
of Cape Town’s City Bowl is in fact the
beautiful and surprisingly spacious home of
Jo and Bevis Hoets. Walking through to the
back of the house, you don’t expect to fi nd
a kitchen leading onto a delightful, shady
courtyard with a staircase up to a second-
fl oor deck. Arriving on the timber landing is
like emerging into the fairy-tale kingdom at
the top of Jack’s beanstalk – not only are you
met by an array of wine barrels of various
sizes containing an assortment of greenery
of diverse shades, dimensions and textures,
but also you feel as if you’re suspended
in mid-air. As with most double-storey
homes on the slopes of Signal Hill, the views
framing the deck are captivating, with Table
Mountain directly ahead of you, the City
Bowl below and the harbour beyond.
Jo and Bevis had always wanted a herb and
vegetable garden and so they called on the
expertise of Ben Getz, MD of Urban Harvest,
a company specialising in the installation and
maintenance of organic vegetable gardens,
including perennial herbs that don’t need
much looking after, apart from basic pruning
and watering. Ben says, ‘When I fi rst came
to consult with Jo, an important factor for
her was that the garden had to be very low
maintenance and able to fend for itself, as
she and her husband didn’t want to have to
fuss and worry about it.’
Ben and his team set about conceptualising
what he calls a ‘container garden’, using
an assortment of old pots, including wine
barrels, which are the perfect vessels for
a self-suffi cient, fuss-free edible garden.
‘We’ve been doing a lot of container gardens
in city homes over the last few years.
They are popular with clients who live in
apartments or townhouses and don’t have a
lawn or much space to work with. I’m a big
fan of them as there are many benefi ts to
these kinds of garden,’ he says. Ben explains
that deep pots or barrels are more conducive
to a healthy, self-sustaining garden because
they allow for a much deeper layer of
compost, making more nutrients available
to the plants than are accessible at ground
level. Aesthetics-wise, container gardens
allow for the creative use of space, as the
different heights and levels of the pots give
the gardens a layered look. With regards
to functionality, container gardens are a lot
more convenient, as you don’t have to bend
down to prune or harvest as you would with
a lawn garden, and the produce is more
accessible because you can walk around
the container. The produce that Jo wanted
was herbs and vegetables that she could
use for salads, pasta sauces and fresh juice.
‘I love eating fresh salad every day, and to
pick everything I need from my own garden
is very rewarding. Because it’s so fresh, and
literally goes from soil to plate, you can really
taste the difference from packaged, shop-
bought produce,’ says Jo.
Jo says one of the most pleasurable aspects
of the garden is that every morning she
awakens to the most beautiful picture
through her bedroom’s glass doors – views
of the city, framed by her garden. And as
the seasons change, so too does the image,
as new fl owers and buds sprout and a new
harvest becomes ripe for the picking.
A garden good enough to eat Despite their limited space, you’d be amazed at how fruitful city-slicker gardens can be. Here’s how you can go from soil to plate with a simple pluck-and-wash

1Platinum- and overall-award winner at the
Garden World Spring Festival 2011: the Lazy
Days garden, designed by Craig de Necker
and built by the Friendly Plant. 2The plunge
pool doubles as a water feature. 3A circular
braai unit with two handy work surfaces
completes this tranquil outdoor living area.
What is a ‘designer’ outdoor living space?
According to Craig de Necker of the Friendly
Plant, it is a destination or focal area that is
tailored to the client’s lifestyle in order to
provide an outdoor space for entertaining
and relaxing. Such areas typically incorporate
seating, a pool or water feature and a fi repit
or braai facility that when combined lead to
our making more use of our outdoor spaces.
Hence the Friendly Plant’s slogan: ‘Live in
your garden!’
Designing a garden in such a way that it
becomes an extension of the home is popular
in South Africa because of our climate –
not to mention that it takes the pain out of
weekly mowing. The Friendly Plant uses both
2D computer-aided design and 3D imaging,
enabling clients to see the fi nished designer
gardens even before the fi rst stone is laid.
Craig believes these designer outdoor spaces
are becoming popular additions to gardens:
‘We have seen an increased demand for
our designer outdoor spaces, as people
realise more and more how much beauty,
functionality and value they can add to
their property.
‘These spaces draw people outdoors and
ultimately lead to their spending more time
in their gardens rather than simply sitting
inside, looking out.’
Each design is unique and specifi c to clients’
demands, and almost anything is possible,
the only limits being the size of the garden
and the budget.
Craig and his team have created many
designer gardens in SA and even one for
an African president. The most popular
elements requested for these spaces are
custom-designed water features and fi repits,
which add atmosphere and movement to
a space. However, if he had free rein, his
space would feature a spectacular swimming
pool with an island in the middle as the
living area: ‘The perfect place in the sun for
relaxing or entertaining.’

GARDENSGARDENS The Public Garden
Going publicNational botanical gardens play an important role in the lives of city dwellers, whether they are seeking solitude in a sanctuary of green or getting out in public with friends and family to enjoy these beautiful spaces. One thing’s for sure: South Africa’s urban centres have exceptional public gardensKIRSTENBOSCH NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN
The largest of South Africa’s nine national botanical gardens,
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is the jewel in the
crown of the South African National Biodiversity Institute’s
(Sanbi) network. The grandeur of this public garden is
heightened by its dramatic setting against the eastern slopes
of Table Mountain. This 36ha garden showcases over 7 000
species of plant life and is a national treasure. Alice Notten,
interpretation offi cer at Kirstenbosch, believes that the setting
is one of many defi ning features of the space: ‘Kirstenbosch
has a spectacular location and breathtaking natural beauty.
The garden is landscaped in a way that harmonises with and
enhances its surroundings and is packed full of thousands of
beautiful and interesting plants.’
Kirstenbosch’s historical roots run deep. Stone tools found
at the Dell site date back to the Stone Age. In 1660 Jan van
Riebeeck planted his hedge, remnants of which are still alive,
to mark the frontier of the European settlement. Cecil John
Rhodes purchased the land in 1895 and bequeathed it to the
government, which neglected it. Kirstenbosch was offi cially
founded in 1913 by a board of trustees with the support of the
Botanical Society of SA. They were faced with an overgrown
site infested with alien trees, thickets of weeds, feral pigs
and a ruined farm. Thanks to their interventions Kirstenbosch
is today geared towards relaxation, but its awareness and
conservation initiatives are what really impress.
On the one hand it is a living museum of SA’s plants (ex situ
conservation) and on the other it is a learning opportunity for
visitors, both about our plants and the conservation issues we
face. Kirstenbosch comprises many smaller gardens, some of
which are designed to grow a specifi c plant group or type and
are maintained according to the plants’ needs. The Botanical
Society Conservatory, for example, is a glasshouse that
imitates a desert climate and showcases the unique succulents
of southern Africa. Other gardens centre around certain
themes, such as the Water-wise Garden, which shows people
how to utilise less water when creating their home gardens,
and the Garden of Extinction, which displays some of the 1 500
plant species that will soon be extinct in the wild and teaches
visitors what they can do to help save threatened plants.
The themed gardens all have detailed storyboards, which is
where Alice’s role is invaluable. ‘My approach as interpreter
is to explain the theme as simply as possible and empower
the visitor with new knowledge or skills that they can put
into practice. I also put information about the plants out in
the garden: I give the plant’s name, tell about its home, its
pollinators, how it propagates itself, any interesting historical
facts about it, and whether it is threatened and why. All of
which, I hope, teaches the visitor to respect and care for
plants both in gardens and in the wild,’ she says. ‘We also
have the crucial Environmental Education Centre, where
many schoolchildren pass through and are taught many
things, the most important being biodiversity, its value to us
and the need to conserve it and not just the importance of
animal conservation.’

and up until 1987 could only be visited by special arrangement. It was
renamed in 2004 and today it is open to one and all.
What set this park apart are its geological features and the highveld
vegetation. Known as the Rocky Highveld Grassland, the park’s natural
vegetation is made up of grassland and savanna, with dense bush in
kloofs and along streams, and it houses over 600 naturally occurring
plant species. The garden is continually being developed and today
includes a succulent rockery garden, a cycad garden, a water garden,
a fern trail, an arboretum, a geological garden, a people’s plant garden,
a birds and butterfl y garden, a dell and a wild-fl ower area. There is also
the Nestlé Environmental Education Centre, the Sasol Dam, a bird hide,
a visitors’ information centre, a restaurant and a function venue.
The park boats an abundance of wildlife, with over 220 bird species
recorded. Visitors may also spot a number of reptiles and small
mammals, including small antelope and jackals, especially while
experiencing the JCI Geological Hiking Trail.
The most majestic feature of the park is the 70m-high Witpoortjie Falls,
whose cliffs are home to a breeding pair of Verreaux’s Eagles.
We asked Administration Manager Sheila Head about the park’s nature
conservation initiatives. ‘The park has a “trash-in trash-out” policy –
we do not provide dustbins and request visitors to take their picnic
leftovers home with them,’ she explains. ‘There are also recycling
bins in the car park for glass, paper and cans, and there are many
information boards around the garden on various subjects. The park
hosts talks and guided walks to keep the public informed.’

A sculptural pillar of amethyst crystal creates a focal point in the Rasul chamber at Life Day Spa Cape Town. The crystals are said to have healing powers.
The Life Day Spa Group is synonymous with luxury, style and pure relaxation, and this family-owned business is riding a wave of pampering success
across South Africa. It is part of the Spas of Distinction Collection, an umbrella group of unique, family-run day spas with 40 years’ health and beauty experience under its collective belt.
The Life Day Spa Group first opened its doors in Fourways in July 2005. Thanks to its success, a Cape Town branch at Century City soon followed. Now, with the opening of the Rosebank branch, the group has raised its standards of indulgence even higher.
Owner Mark Barkett explains that the third branch became a reality because of the need to establish a modern spa in an up-and-coming area such as Rosebank. He believes that the spa will also cater for residents of the surrounding areas, including Dunkeld, Houghton, Melrose and Parkhurst.
All three spas are stylish and modern and set high standards in spa design. Interesting architectural elements mould with striking feature walls and sexy furniture and fittings, creating an environment that is inviting, warm and utterly gorgeous … And that’s just the reception areas!
The experts behind the creative spaces are well known in the world of design. Mark chose only the best of the best to ensure that all his creative requirements were met.
Greg Truen of Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects was responsible for the Fourways branch, which despite its age remains a striking example of design and decor.
Situated in Century City, the Cape Town branch overlooks Table Mountain and the waterways of Canal Walk. Its beautiful interiors were designed by Howard Dembo of Northpoint Architects.
The amazing spaces of Life Day Spa Rosebank – the baby of the bunch – were created by Cori Quinton and Kim Morgan of Cori Quinton Interiors, the interior design and decorating arm of Arthur Quinton Darryl Croome (AQDC) Architects.
Mark says the Life Day Spas are more like hotels, in that each is a sweeping 1 000m2 in size. Each spa offers more than 14 treatment rooms, and every one of them has Rasul and flotation chambers, Swiss showers, steam rooms, saunas and indoor heated pools.
In addition to their vast size, what sets Life Day Spas apart is the sumptuousness of their treatment rooms. Every one is fitted with a plasma screen television, and some of them even feature fish tanks and liquid fireplaces. Colour therapy is incorporated into the design of the treatment rooms, to embrace clients’ moods.
Mark’s favourite space is the pool at Life Day Spa Cape Town, which is reminiscent of an island getaway. He adds that the Cape Town spa’s flotation chamber and its Rasul chamber are not to be missed either.

The spas’ distinctive settings and soothing treatments have not gone undetected by the experts either, with the Cape Town and Fourways branches winning the coveted Les Nouvelles Esthétiques South African Spa of the Year awards. The awards are given according to the key categories of top quality and style, a world-class environment, superior treatments, highly trained staff and exceptional service with a smile – and in none of these categories do Life Day Spas disappoint!
For Mark, it’s all about creating an ambience of abundance and showering clients with luxury. Importantly, the Day Life Spas Group targets the local market, and offers its plethora of facilities and treatments at reasonable prices. ‘People can come in for a back massage and spend a day using the complementary facilities, have a cappuccino, eat at the restaurant, and relax at the pool,’ Mark says. What more could you ask for?

Based on the East Rand, leafy suburban streets fringe the range of properties available in Bedfordview. Known for its sense of community, the area was originally
Elandsfontein Farm. In the gold rush of the 19th century the farm was bought up by mining companies and divided up into what it is today. The name ‘Bedfordview’ was given to the area during a naming competition in the ’20s, after the old Bedford Farm, which today makes up the coveted suburb of St. Andrew’s. Like Bedford, the rest of the farms have also been transformed into property gold mines. Bedfordview became part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in 2000.

Bedfordview is dotted with private guesthouses and B & Bs as it is one of the closest
suburbs to OR Tambo International Airport and has easy access to highways and business
centres, making it a convenient stopover for visitors. Travellers can also overnight at the
Mercure and Nicol hotels. Nearby attractions include the Barnyard Theatre Boksburg, as well
as Emperors Palace, with its hotels, casino, convention centre and entertainment facilities.
Family FeaTures
Bedfordview has a welcoming and warm family environment and features many schools,

Q Why should people invest in Bedfordview?Bedfordview is one of the most
upmarket areas on the East Rand. You
might pay a little bit more but you
are guaranteed a good return on your
investment (though in the current
market it’s unlikely you’ll make a quick
profit). An attractive, peaceful town,
Bedfordview is surrounded by cities,
such as Johannesburg, Edenvale, and
Germiston, and lies in the centre of the
road network linking these towns, with
easy access to the airport, Pretoria
and Heidelberg. Bedfordview is a very
cosmopolitan town, a place where you
will find young people starting out,
young families, and people scaling down.
Q What types of home are available in Bedfordview?Sectional title units vary in size
from 49m2 to 280m2. Prices start
from R550 000 and reach as high
as R15 million or more for the really
exclusive apartments. Your entry-level
home in the residential full-title market
starts from approximately R1,8 million.
Q Are properties here gaining in value?Times have been tough, and there are
mixed opinions on whether we are
coming out of a recession or heading
towards another one. That said, there will
always be sellers and buyers. The result
of successful transactions will mainly
depend on the availability of home loan
finance. In the past we used to have
price growth of 10% to 15% a year.
Q What facilities and attractions are available?Excellent facilities are available, from
shopping malls and gyms to schools
and airport connections. Private schools
usually have their own transport
facilities, and taxis and buses are also
available. Security is constantly being
upgraded as a joint effort between
residents and the police forum.

Opposite This magical beach and clear ocean waters are all yours when you stay at Long Beach Resort. Above It’s a true case of aqua vitae as the water of the infinity pool
appears to meld with the sea.
Situated on the east coast of the sunshine island, Long Beach sits among a number of top holiday resorts primed for romance or family fun in the sun, but
despite its prestigious neighbours, there’s something about Long Beach …
For starters, it’s situated on the Belle Mare Peninsula, on the longest and widest beach of the entire Mauritian coastline, offering secluded sun lounging, thanks to its size. Guests will appreciate having 109m2 of beach per ground-floor room.
There are 255 rooms to choose from, and you can rest assured that they are all designed so as to enjoy ocean views. Keith Mehner of Keith Interior Design was responsible for the interiors of the hotel, and one thing you will notice is that, thanks to his clever ‘open-air living’ design, even when you are indoors you feel as if you are outdoors.
Long Beach’s architecture is definitely a talking point, as it does not follow the typical Creole design. Sun Resorts’ newest brainchild’s architecture and design and its shared relaxation spaces are unique on
the island. The project architect was Kevan Moses of Stauch Vorster Architects, a South African firm.
Taking a fresh approach to resort design, Kevan has produced a striking, contemporary aesthetic softened by natural forms. The genius is in the detail, such as the adjustable windbreaks that modulate the offshore breezes. The building materials were locally sourced and include volcanic stone, Balau wood (a durable tropical hardwood) and black and earth- coloured basalt rocks from neighbouring fields. The thatched roofs, made from dried sugar cane leaves, add the

occasional Mauritian accent. These hard building materials are juxtaposed against the soft tropical flora. The gardens feature almost 500 000 plants, with 26 varieties of endemic species. The resort is done up in shades of grey, mint green, sea blue and coral, with small accents of tropical colours to arrest the eye. The effect is strikingly urban, especially against the white beach and natural surroundings of palm trees, natural brush, and, of course, the dramatic blue backdrop of the Indian Ocean.
The resort is suited to families and honeymooners, and because of its size, the two groups may never meet. In fact, even though the hotel was 80% full when I stayed over, there was never a crowd, and you would be forgiven for thinking that you were living on your own little private island.
There are so many areas for relaxing that you are spoilt for choice when deciding where to spend your day. Sit by the serene freshwater horizon pool, at the large heated-pool bar, on the beach or alongside the nearby lagoon. Choose to chill out on a sun lounger, a double daybed or a hammock-style bed that’s big enough for the whole family, or while away the hours on your private balcony.
Clockwise from top left The hotel rests in a paradisal garden that’s planted with some half a million plants; the lobby features the ingenious adjustable windbreaks designed
by Kevan Moses of Stauch Vorster Architects, who also designed the rest of the resort; an exotic ambience mixes with modern aesthetic leanings at Shores cocktail bar and
lounge; a 64m2 superior beachfront room.

Facilities are top class and include a climbing wall, lap pool, gym and the beautiful Sea Spa, where treatments like the Ocean de Soleil and Soufflé de Satin will have you begging to stay longer. There is also a hair and beauty salon on site.
For the adventurous, activities include two daily snorkelling trips to enjoy the wonders down below, underwater walks incorporating an astronaut-type helmet, as well as sailing on catamarans, skiing and parasailing … You name it, the hotel has it.
Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a round at the nearby Le Touessrok’s 18-hole golf course, designed by Bernhard Langer.
For most, holiday dining is almost as important as the rest of the recreational activities, and Long Beach does not disappoint. Here the dining experience is centred on an urban-style piazza with restaurants, shops and bars. Le Marché is the traditional and international delicacy buffet. It celebrates the art of open kitchens, revealing all the cooking spaces and
creating a theatre of food. Next door is Sapori, with its delicious Italian delights, such as gnocchi and pizza. Across the courtyard is Hasu, a Japanese fine-dining restaurant, and Chopsticks, a Chinese culinary treat. So much choice and so little time …
The piazza comes alive at night with live music, curios for sale and local dance entertainment. There is also Tides pool and beach bar for casual lunches and splendid high teas – indulge in the sweet sensation of traditional homemade macaroons and warm sugared crêpes – and the main cocktail bar and lounge, Shores, which is perfect for pre-dinner drinks.
If you plan on leaving your little slice of paradise, then Port Louis is the place to go to experience the hustle and bustle of a Mauritian city. Mauritius has a host of beautiful sites that beg to be visited. However, should you choose to stay home, Long Beach is the perfect choice. Wrap yourself in the gentle embrace of turquoise waters, white sands, lush coconut trees and the sweet scents of bougainvillea, and just be.

ASK THE EXPERTS
K. Light import NouweNs Carpets
what advantages are there to
buying natural products?
It is wise to think natural. Buying
green/natural/organic items is
not only an attempt to save the
environment, but will also save
you money, for example, in the
form of energy-saving lamps, and
is better for your health.
Your top-selling products?
Our natural table and floor lamps
are hot-selling ranges – perfect
for lodges, hotels and homes.
LEDs are another green product
and our LED strips are definitely
one of our bestsellers, with their
competitive pricing and low
electricity use.
why do you choose to sell
natural products?
As a company we try to be
as environmentally friendly as
possible, and our natural wooden
lamps are such unique items that
we just had to introduce them to
our range!
why are consumers increasingly
turning to natural merchandise?
Being a wholesaler we do not
get a lot of feedback from the
end user, but the feedback we
get via our loyal customers, the
lighting shops, is that people are
recycling and conserving energy
in an attempt not only to save
money, but also to leave less of
an imprint in the environment.
Using LED and energy-saving
lamps and buying recycled or
recyclable goods is a first step
towards ensuring a healthy
planet and economy.
what advantages are there to
buying natural products?
Natural products, such as wool, are
luxurious and sophisticated, yet
offer durability, stain resistance
and lasting good looks.
Your top-selling products?
Nouwens Carpets is known for its
100%-wool products. Copenhagen
is the most popular of these
ranges. It is a hard-wearing
carpet, suitable for domestic
and commercial use, but at the
same time offers the comfort and
opulence that you would expect
from a wool carpet. Copenhagen
is available in two modern weave
designs and an assortment of
modern, natural colour options.
why do you choose to sell
natural products?
Wool does not have a synthetic
equivalent. It is a natural and
sustainable material, and it
has excellent durability. Not to
mention the comfort of walking
on wool.
why are consumers increasingly
turning to natural merchandise?
Consumers are starting to take
cognizance of the effect that
they are having on the planet,
finding sustainable alternatives
and becoming more aware of the
benefits of going natural.
what is your favourite natural
material to work with?
Pure, 100% wool is a hard-working
material that looks beautiful and,
when combined with innovation,
remains relevant and stylish in
homes around the globe.

Selling an unfurnished house is not easy. Buyers looking for a home and a lifestyle often do not see beyond soul-less empty rooms devoid of character and personality. Yes, it’s all about emotions, and you cannot aord not to make the emotional link between your home and the buyers dreams.
Through tasteful home staging you will create that emotional connection and
your property will stand out above the competition.
Research has shown that home staging can reduce listing time on the market by one-third to one-half, and furnished homes could fetch as much as 10% - 15% or more, than an empty home.
Furnished homes sell faster and for more. That is what we do. Stage Your Home is represented in all major areas in South Africa. Call Charlie to nd out how we can help you sell your home.

While auction companies have been operating in South Africa since the 1700s, the last decade has seen the industry mature in the
public’s perception and, particularly in recent years, we have achieved tremendous growth in market share and asset inventory. I am very proud to see Auction Alliance celebrating its 20th birthday this year. During this time I have seen how auctions have emerged from the fringes to become a preferred method of transaction for many property types. However, we are still way behind countries such as Australia, where up to 85% of residential property is traded on the auction oor, and the US, where auction companies can sell over 5 000 properties on a single day.
During the turbulent 1980s and early 1990s the public perception of local auctioneers took a knock as the industry grew on the back of insolvencies and liquidations while capitalising on the four Ds: divorce, death, dissolution and distress. Today we recognise that we have achieved one of our primary goals, namely, to dispel the notion among the public that auctions are used exclusively as a channel for distressed or foreclosed properties. It is important to note that last year less than 50% of our total sales were distressed, and in the commercial property sector speci cally, they only accounted for 27% of sales.
Key to the success of auctions in South Africa is its inherent ability to swiftly adapt to uctuating
market conditions. The auction method is a multi-cyclical sales platform that achieves results in boom or bust conditions. When the agricultural markets were performing in 2001, Auction Alliance sold over R800 million worth of farms. The next rising star we tracked was the housing sector, which started booming from 2002. After that we experienced excellent growth in the commercial property market, selling over R5 billion worth of these properties by 2011. Once the global recession took hold in 2008, we saw our distressed sales leap from R117 million in 2007 to over R1,98 billion in 2011. Auctions are a tough business, but multi-cyclical.
In economic theory, an auction sale is simply the juncture where demand and supply meet, resulting in a price. In its purest form, it’s a transparent transaction between a willing buyer and a willing seller at a speci c moment in time. For instance, in 2002, when demand started escalating, many agents were undervaluing and underselling properties because they were unaware that the market was rapidly growing. However, auctions re ected this turnaround virtually immediately. By 2005 we were getting phenomenal prices in the industrial, o ce and retail sectors, between 15% and 19% higher than ‘market value’, as the supply-demand ratio inverted. The auction method always seems to nd itself on the leading edge of the price curve.
Auction Alliance has always focused heavily on marketing and advertising, and I believe the market
share dominance the company enjoys today is a direct dividend from these extended e orts. A property which may only spend a few minutes on the auction oor would have already enjoyed weeks of strategic marketing on a national scale. I foresee auction advertising moving away from dedicated auction supplements in newspapers towards digital and social media, radio and television as targeted advertising becomes the mantra of the serious auctioneer.I expect to see local auction companies following the international trend of specialising in a particular asset class instead of a general o ering.
Ten years ago I was convinced that online auctions would all but cannibalise the traditional method, but today I realise that they should work alongside each other to achieve the best results. As society’s options for entertainment and retail increase almost exponentially, the industry’s next big shift will be towards nding creative ways to reframe the auction event as a retail-entertainment event.

ocated in central Khartoum, Sudan, just 20 minutes from Khartoum International Airport, lies the mixed-use development, Mushaireb. Situated in a prime location
on the bank of the Blue Nile, it will comprise 20ha of residential, retail, commercial and leisure space.
The design concept highlights Islamic architecture and blends elements from Khartoum’s past with a modern aesthetic, creating a fresh and contemporary end result. The development will ultimately include eight residential towers, the rst of which, Al Bidaa, opened to residents at the end of 2011. The second tower, Al Rayyan is close to completion, and the next two towers, Al Miraq
and Al Wakra, are expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2012.
In addition to the residential towers, Mushaireb will include a ve-star hotel, a riverside promenade, a further 23 individual residential and commercial developments, and plenty of leisure destinations, with communal areas featuring ample garden space, co ee shops and restaurants. Underground parking will be provided, keeping the boulevard car-free, as Mushaireb’s developers aim to maintain a healthy and safe environment for pedestrians.
The entire project is set to cost US$400 million (about R3,3 billion). +249 155 119 100, mushaireb.com

Project plans include the installation of sluice gates at the

will be made available for use in Maputo and Matola. Measures
to counteract the effects of droughts and fl oods will also be
improved as part of the project.

Boldly BryanstonGlenn Norton, broker/owner of Re/Max
Masters, which services Bryanston, says the
demand for property in the area has remained
fairly constant, even through the recession. He
says there is higher demand at the moment
for smaller stands in secure, boomed sections.
‘There is currently a trend in the area of
young buyers purchasing older homes and
renovating and modernising them,’ says Glenn.
Pointing out the many shopping centres, supermarkets, sports centres, and doctors and
other medical facilities in the area, Glenn attributes the demand for Bryanston real estate
to its investment potential. Property prices range from R450 000 for an entry-level studio
apartment to R40 million for a luxury home. +27 (0)11 463 3199, remax-masters.co.za
RESIDENTIAL Real Estate
Your MoveSandy Geffen,
Executive Director,
Lew Geffen Sotheby’s
International Realty,
says homebuyers can
look forward to a
great time ahead
All indications are that this is going to be a
great year for homebuyers, whether they
are entering the market for the fi rst time,
upgrading, or downsizing.
For a start, interest rates are at their lowest
levels in more than 30 years and have been
that way for quite some time, making it easier
for households to pay down their debts and
rebuild their credit records. Consequently, the
fi nancial affairs of many consumers are now
in far better shape than they were when the
recession hit in 2009, putting them in a much
stronger position to apply for home loans.
Secondly, home prices are the lowest they’ve
been in the past six years and remain sluggish,
so anyone buying now is going to get much
more home for their money. This is especially
important for existing homeowners who are
contemplating an upgrade.
Thirdly, and most importantly, banks have
once again begun to compete in earnest for
home loan business, and their fi rst move has
been to lower the high deposit requirements
that have been in force for the past two years.
These requirements have been the biggest
barrier to home purchasing, because most
prospective buyers have had to either save up
a substantial sum of money or liquidate other
investments to get their hands on cash, neither
of which is easy to do in a recession. However,
most lenders are now once again offering
bonds of up to 100% to existing clients in good
standing and bonds of 90% on average to new
clients. Bond originators are already reporting
increases in the volumes of approved loans.
We believe that banks could be more willing
to negotiate on interest rates and grant loans
at less than prime, especially if the rate of
infl ation starts to fall again later this year, as
has been predicted.
However, we do not, even in the long term,
foresee banks lowering their standards as
regards the need for bond applicants to have
excellent credit records, low debt loads and
good employment prospects in order to be
approved – too many hard lessons have been
learnt in recent years about sub-prime lending.
But, given the current bottleneck in demand,
we think lower deposit requirements and rate
concessions will be more than enough to push
the market into full-scale recovery over the
next two to three years, and that 2012 will be
the best time for those who want to ride the
next wave to get on board.
There is no time like the present, so my advice
would be to make hay while the sun shines!
Until next month,
Sandy
East Rand sales track upwardsThere has been an increase in interest in homes on the East Rand, says Nelson Ferreira, Pam
Golding Properties’ area principal, thanks to the Gautrain’s Pretoria route. The area’s reported sales
turnover for the fi nancial year of March 2010 to October 2011 increased by 57,5% to R143 million,
compared with the same period the previous year. Nelson says, ‘We are seeing a trend where
executives are purchasing homes in the established suburbs of Glen Marais, Van Riebeeckpark and
Aston Manor, and commuting to work in Sandton or Pretoria via the Gautrain links.’ He adds that
children on the East Rand are using the Gautrain to get to school, while students are using it to get
to Tukkies. +27 (0)11 892 9966, pamgolding.co.za

Rand-saverA plot of land in Randburg is in its second year of transformation as part of a five-year Public Private Partnership plan. The triangle formed
by Selkirk Road, Bram Fischer Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue will be divided into two sections: the southern section, covering 2,26ha, will be
converted into social housing by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco), which will own and manage the space, while the
northern section of 6,4ha will be turned into a mixed-use property comprising social and municipal services, the Bus Rapid Transit facility,
a library, a taxi rank, a licensing department and additional affordable housing. Phase 1 includes the demolition and upgrade of the bulk
infrastructure and the surrounding roads. There are also plans to revamp the Hill Street Mall, while a number of streets in the office node will be
made more pedestrian-friendly. +27 (0)11 688 7851, jda.org.za
Save for a rainy dayIndicators and surveys all point to the need for belt-tightening in 2012, says Paragon Lending Solutions CEO, Gary Palmer, who is urging business
owners to do stress tests on their cash flow forecasts. ‘There is growing pressure on banks due to economic stress, and new legislation is likely to
significantly impact business owners who need to secure finance for their businesses in 2012,’ says Gary. Increased tax rates and austerity packages
affecting the US dollar and the euro will have a knock-on effect on South Africa too. Local interest rates are set to stay as they are for the first few
months of this year, but analysts are predicting an interest rate hike in the third quarter. paragonlending.co.za

Can you dig it? The student population of South Africa currently stands at 530 000,
yet available housing can only accommodate 100 000 of them. One
solution to this housing shortage is the current trend to convert old
office blocks across the country into upmarket accommodation for
university students. ‘Many universities no longer have enough space on
their campuses to build new residences,’ says Richard Rubin, CEO of
Aengus Property Holdings. With this in mind, Aengus has teamed up with
tertiary institutions and the government to convert 10 former Gauteng
offices into student digs. (In the past, such government funding was used
for maintaining existing student accommodation.) Investing in office
conversions creates modern, secure and functional accommodation,
which costs less in the long run. This development process also helps
to upgrade cities and breathes new life into SA’s urban centres.
Rentals in the Aengus buildings range from R1 950 to R2 500 a month.

DESIGNS OF THE TIMES
The stars of this groundbreaking new collection
are the award winning Perillo chair – a now
iconic design made from one continuous sheet
of material – and the Little Perillo, a light and
bright version of this modern classic.
The elegant Perillo chair with undulating Sci-
Fi lines is a plastic moulded seat that is both a
practical and a sculptural addition to any space.
Its walnut veneer version is undoubtedly a
collector’s item.
The Little Perillo follows closely in its footsteps.
A recent recipient of a prestigious Red Dot
Award, the mini version has been catapulted
into the spotlight with other leading 21st century
designs. Its creator, designer Martin Ballendat,
is known for his refi ned and timeless style and
has racked up a number of international design
awards.
The cheeky and stylish Little Perillo adds a splash
of colour and style to any home. Light and easy
to move, it is perfect indoors or out, for any
contemporary space: be it a modernist home, a
chic loft or even a stylish workplace.
MODULAR MODE‘Keeping it simple’ is the cosmopolitan design principle at the heart of the Dauphin HOME range.
