Research Capillary Action: the combined forces of attraction among water molecules and with the molecules of surrounding materials. It allows water to move through materials with pores or narrow spaces inside. Water molecules stick to each other, they also stick to the sides of a test tube. As water molecules are attracted to the tube, they pull other water molecules up with them.

The Properties of Water Purpose Describe the properties of water using the terms adhesion, cohesion and capillary action. Research Capillary Action: the combined forces of attraction among water molecules and with the molecules of surrounding materials. It allows water to move through materials with pores or narrow spaces inside. Water molecules stick to each other, they also stick to the sides of a test tube. As water molecules are attracted to the tube, they pull other water molecules up with them. Research Polar molecule: a molecule that has electrically charged areas. Each end of the molecule has a slight electric charge. The oxygen end has a slight negative charge. The hydrogen ends have a slight positive charge. Opposite charges attract. Research Cohesion: the act or state of sticking together tightly Adhesion: the act of sticking or attaching to something Hypothesis Write your hypothesis of water using the words adhesion, cohesion and capillary action. Materials Water 2 plastic cups Vegetable oil Paper towels Scissors Meter stick 2 pieces of wax paper 2 plastic droppers Procedures (experiment) 1.Pour a small amount of water into a plastic cup. Pour an equal amount of vegetable oil into a second cup. 2.Cut two strips of paper towel. Hold the strips so the bottom of one strip is in the water and the other strip is in the oil. 3.After one minute, measure how high each substance climbed up the paper towel. 4.Using a plastic dropper, place a big drop of water onto a piece of wax paper. 5.Using another dropper, place a drop of oil on the wax paper. 6.Observe the shape of the two drops from the side. Collecting Data ~ Record your observations during the paper towel strips in water and oil. ~ Record your observations of the drops of water and drops of oil on the wax paper. These observations must be recorded in detail. Interpreting Data This requires a visual aid to help explain the data collected. Therefore you will draw diagrams of your first test using a before and after picture. You will then draw a diagram of the drop of water and drop of oil on the wax paper. This should be drawn as 3D as possible. Conclusion 1.How does capillary action apply to the first demonstration? 2.How would adhesion and cohesion apply to the second demonstration? 3.Now write a description of water using all three words, the research, and the demonstration as an example with in your description.
