Friday 23 rd May Dear Parents, Year 5: MAXXI Museum Trip This Tuesday, Year 5 took a trip to the centre of Rome to visit the world famous MAXXI Museum. We learnt that the Museum was named MAXXI because it is a museum about modern art and architecture in the 21st century (XXI in Roman numerals). We learnt lots of information to support our learning about artists and architects in our English lessons, in particular about Zaha Hadid, the architect of the museum. We took part in a wonderful workshop in which we made 'photographs' of our impressions of the building using photosensitive paper. The children had a wonderful time, especially exploring some of the exhibits after lunch. Here are what some of the children had to say about it: "I liked the exhibition with the mattresses because I didn't realise that gigantic mattresses could be a piece of art! I learnt that there were holes in the walls to hold the building up which were filled with cement." Adriano 5A The Principal’s Weekly Newsletter Mr Deryck M. Wilson

Dear Parents,

I liked the small couch in one of the exhibitions because it looked like a couch for a dog." Thomas 5T "I liked the mirror window on the top floor because Zaha Hadid made it to seem like we are falling." Emily 5T "I really liked our tour guide, Emily, because she helped us learn lots about Zaha Hadid and that photographs were once made by almost 'painting' them using water, fixer and developer." Year 4L Rose Garden On Saturday 18th May, 4L attended the Roseto Giardino in the centre of Rome. They were judging the 'Rosa dei Bambini' and they completed their task with great consideration and maturity. The weather was rainy, but it didn't dampen 4L's enthusiasm. Although the sun didn't shine...they certainly did. Many Thanks to the Committee for hosting this event and also to the parents, for coming along to support the children on this wet and windy day. Ms Leach 'To judge the best rose, we needed to smell it and check if it had a beautiful scent. Then we looked at the colour and shape of the rose. The one I placed first, is the one that won.' Zoe 4L 'We needed to look carefully at the petals and check if the rose had a pleasant fragrance. It was rainy and we got wet, but we had a good time. My favourite rose was a red one.' Aris 4L 'I enjoyed judging a lot. The different roses were very beautiful and I learnt many new things. My rose of first choice, had a wonderful smell and stunning colours. This is the one that won the competition. Everyone was very helpful. Giulia 4L 'When I was judging, there were many varieties of roses, with glorious perfumes. My favourite rose was pink, yellow and orange. I will always remember this experience and I am so happy we were asked to join the Committee to help.' Emma 4L

Thank You Year 4B

I would like to say a big thank you to

all the children in Year 4B. They have

been very respectful this week, taking

great care to maintain silence whilst

exams are under way. As the children

have been behaving fantastically this

week we left the classroom for some

outdoor learning in Science! The sun

came out when we were learning how

to create a classification key as part of

our topic on variation and classification

of living things. The children were

helpful to their peers and successfully

achieved our learning objective for the

lesson.

Well done Year 4B!

Year 7S 10 Euro Challange

7S have pulled out all the stops this week in their efforts

for the 10 Euro Challenge set at the start of term. Each

class has 10 Euros and is tasked to make as much

money for charity as they can with the 10 Euros by the

12th June. Yesterday we saw a raffle, bug racing, snack

sale and lots more! The other forms will have to work hard

to catch up! Well done!

Year 7S ‘fantastic P.E. lesson

"Here is a great photo

from 7S's fantastic P.E.

lesson. All pupils had the

opportunity to practice

their Hula Hoop skills in

preparation for the

competition that will take

place during sports day

on the 18th of June.

With the big day fast

approaching, Miss

Prize winning young mathematicians! Following on from the excellent participation during Maths week, I am delighted to announce not only the winners of the Junior Maths Challenge but also a fantastic achievement by three of our most innovative KS3 mathematicians. Firstly, congratulations to Martina M, Lucilla S and Daniele I in 7B who showed strong teamwork to win the Year 7 team challenge, and also to Rebecca C and Alessandro F in 8K who demonstrated outstanding problem-solving skills and collaboration to win the Year 8 competition with a high score of 78! I was very impressed with all the students who took part, particularly with their determination and inquiry skills in attempting

to solve challenging and unfamiliar problems - thinking hard about Maths is good for the brain! Secondly, I am very proud to reveal that Daniele I (7B), Raffaele T and Thomas V (8K) have had their solutions to challenging Maths puzzle officially published on the NRICH website. You can see their work at https://nrich.maths.org/2281/solution. This is truly a great accomplishment as their work is now being shared with other students and teachers around the world as a model answer to this Maths problem. These students thoroughly deserve this recognition for their hard work, mathematical curiosity and passion for thinking deeply in order to discover more about their subject. A super well done! Ascanio Year 1E

Last term Year 1 enthusiastically learnt about plants. The children grew bean plants and watched them grow before taking them home. Ascanio planted his bean plant in his vegetable patch with his grandfather. He said, "There are now lots of flowers!" Hopefully over the next few weeks he will have a chance to try his very own beans!

School Premises The grounds at Southlands are open to our parents and children should they wish to play and relax after school. However, the Nursery garden, Reception garden and area in front of the gym and

equipment (e.g. bicycles) are off limits. May we remind you that, as parents, you are responsible for monitoring your children and any non-Southlands child that accompanies you. Please continue to supervise the children in your care ensuring that their safety is your priority. Your co-operation in this

matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Classrooms after 3.25pm

We kindly ask for your co-operation in ensuring that children do not enter classrooms after the end of

the school day. Several lessons including Elementare and Media courses take place and it is

important that noise levels are kept to a minimum especially as these students are preparing for their

end of year exams.

We count on your assistance in this regard in order to ensure that equipment and personal items are

not damaged or inadvertently misplaced. In addition, the cleaning staff commence their duties in

several areas of the school after 3.45pm.
