Good luck!

Welcome to the team...........................................Thank you so much for signing up and being part of #TeamPrincesTrust 2014. Palace to Palace is going to be an amazing event and you’ll be right at the heart of it. You can look forward to an exciting and fun-filled day, as well as the great sense of achievement you’ll have from taking on this challenge and from helping young people through your fundraising.

Since The Prince’s Trust was founded in 1976 by HRH The Prince of Wales our mission has been to help disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. Now into our 38th year, we remain dedicated to changing young lives.

We support 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Many of the young people helped by The Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or they have been in trouble with the law. Our programmes give these vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work.

We have helped over 750,000 young people. Yet, despite all of our work, there remains nearly a million young people in the United Kingdom who are not in work, education or training. With your support we can help these young people to realise their potential and give them the chance they need to move forward with their lives.

So thank you for getting involved. You’ll find lots of hints and tips in this ride guide to help you fundraise and to make the most of your day. We hope you have a wonderful time.

Thank you again

The Palace to Palace Team.

KARINE HARRIS

Being homeless was the worst point in my life. I didn’t think there was a way out, but The Prince’s Trust changed all that and now I’m doing my dream job.I was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was 15 and I left school soon after that. I became homeless when I was 18. I spent my days hanging out on the street, doing nothing. I didn’t think there was a way out. I didn’t know what the future held, or if I even had one. I thought I’d be a 40 year-old druggie, out on the street, possibly selling my body. I didn’t mean anything to anyone. Then I joined the Team programme. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. After Team I got part-time work but I became homeless again. This time I knew who to turn to. I went to The Trust for help and got a progression mentor and a Development Award to buy clothes to wear to job interviews. Before The Trust I didn’t have the money or the confidence to buy smart clothes – I didn’t even think I’d ever get an interview, let alone a job; but I did. I got a two-year apprenticeship at a construction firm. I love my job and I just feel like I’m in my element now. I’m so happy.

I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE HELD, OR IF I EVEN HAD ONE.

90 mile route ..............................................

Ride support ...........................................

An emergency number will be provided on the day, you can call this in case of any difficulty or you can ask a marshal for assistance. Bike Doctors, courtesy of Cycle Surgery will be at the start and at the stops along the course to make basic repairs. Remember to carry some loose change with you in case you need to purchase any spare parts.

If your bike does break down we will pick you up and take you to the nearest stop. This can take a while so please be patient. Try and repair punctures yourself or ask a fellow cyclist, this will be quicker. Relief vehicles will be available to pick up any retirees. If you require this please identify yourself to the nearest marshal.

Page 10: The Prince's Trust - Palace to Palace 2014

About the start......................................................

So all your training has led to this! When you’re ready to set off just head towards the start funnels on the Mall with your rider number clearly visible (don’t forget your safety pins!) Ride marshals will scan your number and will give you a detailed route map that fits into your pocket with an emergency number on just in case you need any assistance. Just remember to allow yourself enough time so you’re ready to set off during your allocated start time slot.

10

Page 11: The Prince's Trust - Palace to Palace 2014

Ultra riders

If you are taking part in the Ultra distance please ensure you have your handle bar rider number attached to your handle bar with the number facing forwards before entering the start funnel. This is your timing chip and will provide you with a finishing time. Please note it is still not a race this simply helps to track your progress.

If you are taking part in the Classic ride we can’t unfortunately track your ride time through the scanning system so please make sure you bring a watch if you want to monitor your timings.

Emergency contact details

Please ensure you have filled out your emergency contact details on the reverse of your bib before arriving at the start. If this is not completed before arrival it could delay your start time. It is mandatory to have these details on your bib.

Trains

The closest mainline stations to the start line are Charing Cross, Waterloo and Victoria. For all train times please visit nationalrail.co.uk. Each route provider has different rules about bikes onboard so it is worth checking before you set off.

Underground

The nearest Underground stations that you can take your bike to are Westminster, St. James’s Park and Embankment which are all on both the Circle and District lines and a short cycle from the start. There are restrictions with taking bikes on the London Underground. More details, along with the first tube times, can be found at tfl.gov.uk.

Driving

There is no parking at the start but there are two designated bicycle drop off areas on Horse Guards Road and at Admiralty Arch at the top of The Mall.

Be prepared...........................................Palace to Palace isn’t a race, but for your average cyclist, it’s still a challenge. After all you don’t cycle 45 or 90 miles every day so we are sure you’ll reach the end feeling a little tired but incredibly proud of yourself.

We have lots of great advice and tips on our website covering training, what to wear, getting your bike ready and frequently asked questions.

Remember ...........................................Don’t forget to bring these essential items with you on the day:

Æ Road worthy bike – your bike will be checked before you start

Æ Cycle helmet - it is compulsory to wear a helmet

Æ Rider number

Æ Official Palace to Palace T-shirt

We also recommend bringing the following items:

Æ Full water bottle or Camelback

Æ Snacks such as energy bars or gels

Æ Money

Æ Charged mobile phone

Æ Spare inner tube and basic puncture repair kit

Æ Padded cycling shorts

Æ Cycling mitts/gloves

Æ Lightweight waterproof jacket (just in case!)

Æ Sunscreen (just in case!)

Æ Pump

Æ Tyre levers

Look after yourself ...........................................

Æ You must wear your official rider number on the day and it must be visible at all times

Æ BE SEEN, most accidents happen at junctions; wear high visibility belts, fit lights and use them in poor visibility

Æ Always wear a cycle helmet that fits and is securely fastened as well as conspicuous clothing that is appropriate for cycling, i.e. nothing which may get caught on your chain or wheels or may affect your balance

Æ All riders must be aged 16+ on the date of the ride and any rider with a medical condition, or unsure of their physical ability to take part are advised to seek medical advice from a general practitioner prior to the event

Æ Keep your bike roadworthy; check your brakes work, your chain is oiled and your tyres are in good condition

Æ Whatever the weather conditions, your body’s fluid requirements will increase significantly whilst cycling. Loss of fluid, especially from sweating will reduce your blood volume and mean that your heart will have to work harder. Therefore, replacing this fluid loss is essential to you completing the course

Æ Cycling will increase your energy needs, so aim to eat little and often. Bring snacks with you so you have something to keep your energy levels up along the route

Æ Alcohol and cycling are not a good mix and we strongly recommend you do not indulge along the route

14

Be safe...........................................Palace to Palace is open to anyone over the age of 16 who is capable of completing the course. It is not a competitive race and it is held on open roads.

Page 15: The Prince's Trust - Palace to Palace 2014

Look after other road users ...........................................

Æ Remember it is not a race. Be a good advert for cycling and show consideration to others, whether cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders or drivers and acknowledge those who give way to you

Æ Ride in single file on narrow or busy roads. Never ride more than two abreast on open roads

Æ Don’t cycle on pavements except where designated, pavements are for pedestrians

Æ You must obey all traffic light signals and road signs; keep to your side of any dividing line on roads or cycle paths

Æ Keep your distance from other cyclists at all times, as some may be inexperienced. Be prepared to slow down or stop if necessary

Æ Take care at all times. Don’t expect to cycle at high speeds. Please signal any intention to turn left or right and don’t stop suddenly, there may be cars or other cyclists directly behind you

Æ Do not attempt any dangerous passing

Æ Only overtake if it is safe to do so and use your bell to let people know you are coming though

Æ Keep both hands on the handlebars (unless signalling) and both feet on the pedals

Æ Be careful at junctions, bends and entrances

Æ Never hold on to a moving vehicle or trailer

Æ Please do not ask friends or family to drive along the course

The course has been chosen by The Prince’s Trust and Limelight Sports, our event development partner, to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. However, you are advised to adhere to our road safety guidelines and obtain personal accident insurance. You also need adequate cover for your bike and personal property to cover you for loss or damage, and loss or injury you may cause to a third party.

Please take the time to read our terms and conditions.

Your fundraising...........................................Hopefully you’ve all started fundraising, or have even reached your minimum sponsorship target by now! If not, don’t worry, here’s a few ideas to kick off and don’t forget to check the rider resources for more handy hints.

Palace to Palace Classic sponsorship commitment:

£120

Palace to Palace Ultra sponsorship commitment:

£240

Step one: Set your fundraising goal Not only is your goal to complete the route but to also fundraise for The Prince’s Trust. It might sound like a lot but you’ll be amazed at how quickly it adds up.

Step two: Start fundraising Don’t worry about asking for donations. Many people will be impressed you’re raising money and will want to support you. Also think about some creative ways to fundraise. Why not organise a bake-off or a team car wash? Don’t forget to ask your employer about Matched Giving. The company matches the amount you raise!

Step three: Shout about it! Don’t be shy! Set up your JustGiving page and then send out your URL to friends, family and colleagues asking for them to support you with your Palace to Palace fundraising. Make sure you share your page on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter too!

Step four: And don’t forget to Gift Aid it If your sponsors are UK taxpayers encourage them to Gift Aid their donations, either online or by filling in their full name, address and postcode on our sponsorship form and ticking the Gift Aid box. Every £1 you raise will become £1.25 through Gift Aid.

£120can help us give advice and guidance to at least 60 young people calling our telephone helpline.

£240can pay for six unemployed young people with bags of enthusiasm to receive six months of progression support to launch their own business.

SHAUN MCPHERSON

When I was growing up I used to think ‘what’s the point; no-one believes in me, so why should I believe in myself.’ The Prince’s Trust changed all that. Almost everyone said I was a waste of space and that I’d never get anywhere in life. I got excluded from different schools and I couldn’t get a job because I didn’t have enough qualifications. My ADHD made it even harder. I realised that if life was going to change, I was going to have to do something about it. So I put myself through college. After that, I went on the Enterprise programme, and it’s totally changed my life. I’ve got my own business now, Elite Pond Covers, and I’ve become a Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador. The confidence it has given me is amazing. Sometimes I can’t believe it’s me standing up in front of people and telling them about my life. I was stuck in a very dark place before I came to The Trust. They were like a torch in a dark room. Now, as a Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador, I’m able to use my own torch, and shine that light to help other people.

THE ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME HAS TOTALLY CHANGED MY LIFE.
