Roads: The Board is continuing negotiations with two companies for the phase one of road maintenance contract. This first contract includes mill & overlay of eight streets whose PCI (road condition) index is low . It also includes patching that was identified in the 2018 road study for the other streets. The second phase will also provide for preventative maintenance, in the form of HA5 or other seal coating, for all the remaining streets.
Social: The committee is planning for the upcoming season of activities. Please contact Annie Mailloux to volunteer to help with the committee planning.
Pool: The pool continues to be closed for the season. Maintenance of the pool area is provided on a weekly basis.
Boatyard: As mentioned in the January message from the Board, we are modifying the spaces in the boatyard to conform to the survey that was commissioned last year and overseen by John Bartelme. One space was eliminated because it was not on our property. In addition, changes to four spaces are required and will be made when the weather permits. There are several spaces that are available for rent. The rental rates are considerably lower than most off-site options and the benefit of easy access makes this a great opportunity for our community .
Grounds: A contract to repair the damage done by the December storms was approved by the Board. Substantial damage occurred in the Broad Leaf area and the Coneflower dry pond. Pine trees were downed and many limbs were scattered in both areas.
The Phase 2 landscaping plan, adopted in 2017 and approved by the current Board was completed. This work included new plantings and ground cover on both sides of The Preserve Trail behind the entrance walls. More than 200 plants were added including Winter jasmine and Allegheny Viburnum. In addition, 61 Plum Yew plants were added in the center island surrounding the existing Crape Myrtles.
Entrance lighting that was stolen was replaced. Please let Dana Taylor know if you observe any suspicious activity in the entrance area so we can prevent future theft. Dwight
Weaver is investigating alternatives including the addition of video surveillance, as well.
The Board signed a one year extension to the APS landscaping contract with the same terms, conditions and pricing. This contract covers the maintenance of common areas including retention ponds and nature trails. If you have any comments or suggestions please contact our Manager, Dana Taylor, who is responsible for overseeing the contract.
Common Area: The security of our community is very important. Recently, there have been several efforts to create unauthorized “roads” between The Preserve and The Legacy. The Boards of the two communities have not approved of these trails, that appear to be used for golf cart traffic. In particular, The Preserve covenants do not allow for the use of golf carts in our common areas and such “roads” are therefore violations. One of these “roads” included a wooden bridge. After the bridge was discovered, it was removed.

Finance: Our finances continue to be strong. At the end of 2018, our Reserve fund was almost $1.2 million and our operating budget had more than $160,000 in its bank account. While road expenditures in 2019 will be significant, our reserves are sufficient to fund them.
Please consider volunteering for a committee to help us all continue to make our community attractive and welcoming.

The Preserve Investment Club
The Preserve Investment Club will meet on Monday, February 11, at 7:00 PM at 45 Night Heron. No matter your investing expertise, you will enjoy both the social and investment aspects of this close-knit club that has been in place for more than 10 years. The club has a history of outperforming the averages that continue in today's difficult investment times. The Club has begun the 2019 investment year by again beating all the major averages.

Couples Billiards
March 8 at 7:30 PM
Are you interested in meeting other couples who enjoy playing billiards but you don’t have a pool table? No pool table is necessary to participate in COUPLES BILLIARDS! You can’t come every month? No yearlong commitment is necessary; you can play when you can!
The billiards group plays every other month on the second Friday at 7:30 PM. Our March 2019 date is March 8th. Depending on how many people play, we split up with a maximum of eight people per host home. We all meet at the end for dessert, and prizes are handed out!
You do not have to be a skilled player to join, nor do you have to have a pool table. For those new to the neighborhood, it is a nice way to get to know your neighbors. Evening Christian Book Study Group
First and Third Tuesdays at 7:00 PM
After completion of The Story by Max Lucado and Randy Frazee, the Evening Christian Book Club will be taking the next logical step on how to live the story in a book called Believe by Randy Frazee. In this study, the author walks us through ten key beliefs of the Christian faith, the ten key practices of one who follows Jesus, and the virtues that describe someone who is becoming more like Jesus.
Our meetings generally last about two hours with the first half hour dedicated to fellowship over coffee and snacks. During the meeting,
we will review the video and then have a group discussion about each chapter. Our meeting will conclude by asking for prayer requests and praying for those requests.
Our group meets each month on the first and third Tuesday at 7:00 PM. If you would like to participate in the discussions or if you’d like more information about the group, please contact George and Rose Mills at [email protected] or call 919-704-8508. Newcomers are always welcome!
Beth Moore Daytime Bible Study
The Beth Moore Daytime Bible Study group will be studying The Beloved Disciple: Following John to the Heart of Jesus. Gals on the Go
Nasher Museum of Art
Duke University
February 21
Gals on the Go will visit the Nasher Museum of Art, a major center for the arts in Durham and the surrounding region. The Nasher Museum’s permanent collection includes some of the world’s best contemporary art with a focus on artists of African descent, as well as European and Medieval arts and European & American paintings. We will also view the Pop America exhibit which makes a critical contribution to understanding the artistic period from 1965-1975 including Latin America‘s rich artistic heritage.
The Nasher is one of two winners of the inaugural Sotheby’s Prize, meant to support exhibitions that explore underrepresented areas of art history. Pop América, 1965-1975 will showcase the significant contribution of Latin American and Latino artists working at the same time and alongside their U.S. and European counterparts. https://nasher.duke.edu/exhibitions/
After touring the exhibits, we will have lunch at the Fairview Dining Room at the Washington Duke Inn. In Memoriam
Antoinette Finizio
Antoinette Finizio, who resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Donald Ferranti, passed away on January 4, 2019. She lived in Lynbrook, New York, for 45 years, and she was an activeparishioner at Our Lady of Peace Parish.
She moved to The Preserve in 2008, and she enjoyed word puzzles, cooking, and reading, especially the newspaper.
Antoinette is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, two grandsons and their wives, and three great-grandchildren in addition to other relatives. The family requests donations be made to The Polka Dot Mama Melanoma Foundation at http://polkadotmama.org.
9th Annual Chatham Empty Bowls Dinner

CORA invites the public to the 9th Annual Chatham Empty Bowls Fundraiser on Sunday, February 24 at Galloway Ridge at Fearrington in Pittsboro. Empty Bowls is an event designed to raise awareness and funds for the battle to end hunger in Chatham County.
Artists will donate hundreds of handmade bowls. The bowl then serves as a reminder that someone’s bowl is always empty and of the efforts to end hunger in Chatham County. Dinner and bowls will be available for purchase at various levels.
This year’s event will feature light appetizers, soups from local restaurants, breads, desserts, and a selection of beverages. Costs for the dinner range between $20-$50 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets go on sale on January 2, 2019. New Books Given to Beaufort Middle School
by The Preserve Book Group
Instead of having its usual book exchange at the December holiday party, The Preserve Book Group decided to donate books to Beaufort Middle School in Beaufort, NC. The school was damaged by Hurricane Florence, and 80 students are still displaced.
Lucille Fink and Linda Hunicutt delivered 53 books to the media center. The media center specialist and the principal greeted Linda and Lucille, and the students were thrilled with the book group’s donation. They were all smiles as they unpacked the books, and many students wanted to take the new books home right away.
