Unity of Surprise ♥ The Church of Practical Christianity ♥ Where Good Happens Page 2

Blessings & Bits Reverend Billie Martini Lent, the 40 days, plus six Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday is such an exciting time of year. This time, in traditional Christian churches, is a period of fasting and abstinence. Charles Fillmore, our Unity co-founder, considered Lent to be “a season of spiritual growth, a time for progressive unfoldment.” He suggested that we abstain from old forms of limited thinking and replace that thinking with a brand new sense of who we are and how God expresses through us and as us.

Our Lenten season, beginning with our Ash Wednesday Service on March 5, can be the beginning for us of 46 days of further living our commitment to expand in consciousness.

The suggestion that Charles Fillmore made about replacing our limited thinking with a brand new sense of who we are reminds us that we can “take up” instead of “give up”. We can take up higher thoughts of ourselves, new images of our-selves. We can stop self-defeating thoughts and take up the image of good health, wholeness, prosperity. We can take up the attitude that we are the masters of our thoughts. We can take up an “I can” attitude instead of “I can’t”. We can say “I will” instead of “gee, I which I could.” We can say “I do” instead of “I’ll try.” Remember Yoda says to Skywalker in the movie, The Empire Strikes Back, “Try? No, we do, or we don’t do, there is no try.”

We can put some attitude in our thinking and “take up”, step up into our power. We aren’t weak and undisciplined! We don’t have to play small! We are powerful beyond measure!

Let’s move forward towards Easter, taking up the teachings of our Way Shower, our brother Jesus.

Let’s do the work we need to do, are guided to do to expand our Christ consciousness!

“We do”, there is no “try”.

Blessings, Love, Reverend Billie

Ash Wednesday Service Wednesday, March 5, 11:00 AM Sanctuary Come together with Reverend Billie, James Crowley and your Unity family to prepare for Lent, a time of great spiritual growth and expansion of consciousness.

During this meditative service, we will open our hearts to all that God has to teach us in the next 40 days, to learn more about our spiritual natures. We will prepare ourselves for a new understanding of the Christ within and become more eager to live the Christ life. Let’s set our intentions to spend time in prayer, a daily appointment with God. We will be invited to surrender our will and to open our minds and hearts to new ways of thinking, feeling and being.

See you here where good happens, where God happens.

I am strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Celebrating Greatness! Book Signing Sunday, March 2, 2014

Meet Barbara Van Kirk-Rockenbrant Self-Published Author Be sure and drop by the Book Store on Sunday, March 2 to meet Barbara Van Kirk-Rockenbrant. Barbara is promoting her three wonderful and meaningful

books about making good choices. She will be signing copies of her books titled, The People Boxes, The Girl With The Shoulds, and The Person Who Had Feelings. Very meaningful little books that are great for all ages.

Meditation Facilitator, Reverend Billie Tuesday’s from 11—Noon Myrtle Fillmore Room

Someone referred to our Faith Lift Meditation time on Tuesday mornings to face-lift time. It does that too. When we’ve finished with our heart check and our two 20 minute periods of “silence” we look like we’ve had face lifts. Any worry lines are erased, any stress and strain is totally gone and we’re ready to again face the world, with our faith and our faces lifted. Join us! Everyone is welcome.

I find strength in the silence.

Did You Know? Did you know that Reverend Billie takes Mondays off? Did you know that she prepares the Sunday Lessons on Thursdays? Let’s support her in taking time off and in continuing to prepare inspiring lessons by not calling, texting or emailing her on Mondays and Thursdays. Bless you for your kindness and compassion.

brighter as a result of a life of prayer.

Thomas Keating wrote: “...the words you choose are sacred because it is a symbol of your intention to open yourself to the mystery of God’s presence beyond thoughts, images, and emotions.” He tells us to think about the words as we begin our prayer because we tread on Holy Ground. Time spent in prayer is more beneficial than we can imagine. While we pray, we are being bathed in Holy Light. This loving presence transforms in silent unseen ways. The more often we seek communion with our creator, the deeper is our understanding of the Divine. It touches all the levels of our being. We sleep better, relationships are more compatible, health improves and all the while Spirit is caring for our soul. We are truly blessed!

Confidential Prayer Support Here to pray with you The Unity of Surprise High Watchers prayer team trusts in the creative, regenerating, transformative power of Divine Love.

Through God’s Wisdom, we immerse the dear ones for whom we pray in God’s absolute love. We see these beloved as perfect, whole and complete, limitless and free.

A Prayer Request box is located on the information counter in the lobby and also in the Sanctuary each Sunday.

Remember, God is always with you. All His blessings and goodness are yours by divine inheritance. God is the freeing transformative power within; infinite intelligence and wisdom, always your light and inspiration, healing and harmonizing in every way.

What a wonderful opportunity to share “prayer talk” with you once again. For thirty years, my meditation practice has filled the quiet moments with peace and joy. Today the return of prayer has brought depth and commitment to those moments of

communion. Imagine, you and I can talk to God anytime we wish! Let’s establish closer ties by honoring this precious relationship and The Oneness that binds us together.

Prayer reminds us of this heritage with our loving Heavenly Father and of the Angels who assist with the Father’s Plan. At some point in life, we have all experienced situations where we called out for help. Psalm 121 states: “My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” It is such comfort to recognize we are never alone for our creator is always a part of us. The Father hears our prayers, understands our need and will be our faithful companion from the moment of birth to the last breath we take, and then even beyond into the eternal realms.

Prayer is a call to the higher worlds for help, com-panionship, thanksgiving and loving acceptance. It nurtures, heals and makes whole what is broken. It is through our faith that we are privileged to open the doors to a greater reality. Faith in God brings forth the light. It is in honest believing we uncover the real truths.

As life continues to lead us forward our prayers can take on a depth of great measure. Beyond the words is a magnetic space of pure connection and communion with the Divine. Each session of prayer transforms into moments of eternal value. Our awakening consciousness develops into a greater consciousness. Our inner light becomes

I take up the image of health, wealth and

happiness.

If a dog was your teacher you would learn stuff like…

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air, and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience.

Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory.

Take naps and stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting, when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, drink lots of water and rest under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout—run

right back and make friends.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Eat with gusto, and enthusiasm.

Stop when you have had enough.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent; sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Selfless Service By Carol Sarna By now I’m sure you’ve heard… I have resigned as the Volunteer

Coordinator for Unity of Surprise. As much as I loved working in that position, I just can’t continue work-ing seven days per week. I’m really surprised that I made it for 1.33 years. And in addition, my full time job as a Real Estate Agent pays more than my part time job as a Volunteer Coordinator.

I have enjoyed working with all our volunteers and becoming better friends with lots of you. You have all been generous with your time and always volun-teer if I have been short of help. Thank you. I know you will continue to assist whoever takes my place because you care about Unity of Surprise as much as I do.

I know I’ve said it before, but I am so grateful for my church family at Unity of Surprise. We have so many volunteers at our church and so many are willing to step up when needed. I wish my office worked as a team like Unity does. When Karen Whitmer needed a break from calling people to bring Sunday treats, two people volunteered before Fellowship had ended that day. Where else do we find that kind of teamwork?

I’m really looking forward to the Annual Business Meeting at the end of February to see our church vision as of 2017 and to hear the new ideas that came out of that vision work with Reverend Felicia Searcy. What an exciting time to be preparing our church for the future!

Thank you all, and now I will be just another volunteer.

It was a quiet time for the Men of Unity in February. We moved our social outing to 11:00 a.m., the last Tuesday of the month to catch those who liked to be late risers. Luckily Mimo’s Bistro promised to serve breakfast all day in case we moved it to the afternoon in the future.

We scheduled our first baseball outing for February 28th to see the Kansas City Royals vs. the Texas Rangers. Those of us who are Seahawks fans were hoping to see the Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson play for the Rangers since he announced he had signed up with the team. In his announce-ment he didn’t say whether he was leaving the Seahawks or not but I doubt it. Since I’m writing this prior to our attending the game we don’t know if he’ll be on the card or not.

Our only other commitment will be to assist in setting up the heavy stuff for the Chili Cook-Off prior to the Annual Business Meeting. I’m trusting all the men will be there to help since they won’t see this till after the event.

Depending on the outcome of our baseball retreat we may schedule a second one in March so ask one of the Men of Unity about it.

Till next month I remain,

As someone who grew up Irish, I became very familiar with the expres-

sion, “It’s the luck of the Irish.” But over this past year, as I’ve taken part in my ministerial studies, I’ve learned that luck is something that anyone can attract, but it’s not really luck.

I used to think that if something didn’t go my way, I must be experiencing bad luck. In reality, of course, there is no such thing as good luck or bad luck. If we understand the laws of the universe, we come to realize that everything that happens is to the good, in one form or another… even when it looks like it’s exact opposite.

I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to learn what I’ve learned over the last year. Because of this, I have experienced a new found peace… in my work, my play, and in every other area of my life.

What we must realize is that when we surrender to God, or spirit, or whatever name we choose to call our one true source, we have begun to have experiences of happiness, peace, and abundance like nothing we could have imagined otherwise.

I know that God is my source, and that God is the one and only power working in my life.

I’m proud to be an Irish lad, but I don’t need Irish luck. I have my Source. And I have the wonderful opportunity to share my light and my Source with everyone I meet. And I am blessed!

Tuesdays, March 18th 1:00—4:00 PM Myrtle Fillmore Room Acupressure is the practice of applying hand or finger pressure to specific energetic or conductive points on the body. It helps to activate the body’s recuperative ability, assists in diminishing congestion and promotes vitality. This hands on work releases and strength-ens the body’s energy system. It is especially helpful with stress related conditions. It is not meant to replace medical care although it can be an effective complementary therapy.

Valentine’s Day will have come and gone. How many sent themselves a big, big card with all of their wonderful attributes? I admit to struggling with some of those adjectives from Reverend Billie’s Valentines Day lesson. I won’t tell you which ones.

Thank you again to Mary Jane Mendias and Kathryn Clouther for the Valentine’s Day raffle. And thank you to all of those who have purchased chair plaques so far for the Sanctuary chairs to celebrate themselves and others. This project is ongoing, so you can celebrate ‘you’ all year long. Plaques can be purchased in the book store.

By the time you read this, we will have had our Annual Business Meeting. That is always an Important day when all the people who have worked so hard get to report on the previous year. We have some very impressive team leaders, along with the staff and Board, as I am certain you have noticed.

I adore getting news from you all. Until next time, Happy spring.

Love, Carolyn Sodini

As I write this, I keep thinking that time is moving nearly as fast as the speed of sound. March, how did it get here so fast? I know our friends and relatives in other parts of the country are looking forward to Spring. It just reminds me how lucky

we are to have created this wonderful place to live and this church and our church family! Yes, you can take credit for creating this. Just remember how powerful you are.

So many things have come and gone so far this year. This wonderful weekend with Reverend Felicia Searcy, at church and at Boot Camp. The wonder-ful book discussion on Myrtle Fillmore, reminding us of the powerful belief of our co-founder. The Playful Sisters had a great turn out for the theater outing in February. Valerie Griffin tells me it was a fun come-dy. Bronco fans could have probably used some humor on the same day.

Gratitude to Norma Stalnaker for becoming our new Hospitality Team Leader. Hospitality (food?) is one of our major activities so we needed someone who lives the message of hospitality. Hospitality at church is right up there with Lunch Bunch. A big thank you, also, to Bonnie Knapp for keeping us supplied with local restaurants once a month so the Lunch Bunch can enjoy the fellowship of food after church.

The Prayer Chaplains had their quarterly meeting in February. Fifteen glorious women who are powerful prayers. We need to find some guys to balance this out. So, you men out there, think on this! Maybe you should think about two of you!!!

Co-Coordinators: Reverends Carol Beyer & Julia Leakey Thursday, March 20th On Thursday, March 20th, the Women’s Spiritual Study Group will be visiting the Jewish Conservative Synagogue in Sun City West. Rabbi Rosenberg will guide us through the Temple and explain the signif-icance of structures there. He will talk about Jewish history, significant teachings and events, and a bit about Kabbalah. So much of our history is shared, so I know it will be interesting.

We will meet at Unity of Surprise at 1:15 p.m. and drive the short distance to the Synagogue togeth-er. Please sign up for this event and indicate if you can take others in your car. We’ll see you there.
