The Presbyterian A Newsletter of the First Presbyterian Church 125 South Poplar Street, Bucyrus, OH 44820 October 2018 “Where everyone is welcome” Why You Should Be a Liturgist The very heart and nature of the church is worship. Worship is at the center of why we were created, and it is the center of why the church exists. The goal of salvation is to create an eternal, worshiping people. And so in worship we gather together and we respond to the God who creates, blesses, judges, graces, feeds, transforms and heals. The word “liturgy” comes from the Latin word meaning “the work of the people.” The church throughout the ages has been identified by an understanding of the “priesthood of all believers” which has played itself out in inviting non-clergy to lead and guide their sisters and brothers in the worship of God. It is therefore our desire to carry this tradition forward by equipping members and their children to assist in corporate worship through the liturgy. Your role as someone who guides the worship life of the church, then, is a crucial one- for you are leading God’s people in the very thing they were created to do. Instead of taking for granted the movements of our worship, we want to seek to guide people through the different movements, to make the comprehensible to those who might be unfamiliar, and to give each portion the weight they deserve. Therefore, we seek to do all that we do with excellence, and in good and decent order. As we seek to create a vibrant, thoughtful, transformational, and encouraging Lord’s Day worship, we are asking you, “the people,” to engage in leading your brothers and sisters in the true worship of God. I know for many this seems like a daunting task. Because of that, I have written a training guide, and will be holding regular liturgist training throughout the year. There is not a date set for the first training yet, but if you are interested in serving the church in this way, please contact Michelle Bacon in the church office ([email protected] ). It is a great honor for me, as your pastor, to lead this church in the worship of the One True and Holy God each Sunday alongside men and women of this congregation, as I can see that God is building up leaders and Gospel champions in our midst. The future is bright for First Presbyterian—let’s keep moving forward, together! For His Kingdom, Jeremy McNeill Pastor, First Presbyterian Church Bucyrus, OH (256)-652-7823

“Where everyone is welcome”

Why You Should Be a Liturgist The very heart and nature of the church is worship. Worship is at the center of why we were created, and it is the center of why the church exists. The goal of salvation is to create an eternal, worshiping people. And so in worship we gather together and we respond to the God who creates, blesses, judges, graces, feeds, transforms and heals. The Friend of Little Children Jesus & the children, from Matthew 18,19,

Mark 10, Luke 18Jesus' friends were arguing. Who was the most important helper in God's kingdom? They wanted to know.“I am!” James said.“No, you're not!” said Peter. “I am”Nonsense, Matthew said. “I'm the cleverest!”“No, you're not!”“Yes, I am!”“Yes!” “No!” “Am, too!”This silliness went on and on like that for some time. You see, Jesus' friends had started thinking they had to do something tomake themselves special to Jesus – that is they were the cleverest or the nicest or something, Jesus would like them best. But they had forgotten something. Something God had been teaching his peopleall through the years: that no matter how clever you are, or how good you are, or how rich you are, or how nice you are, or how important you are – none of it makes any difference. Because God's love is a gift and, as anyone will tell you, the whole thing abouta gift is, it's free. All you have to do is reach out your hands and take it.

So while Jesus' friends were arguing, some people who knew all about getting gifts – in fact, you might say they were gift experts – had come to see Jesus. Who were they? They were little children.

Jesus' helpers tried to send them away. “Jesus doesn't have time for you!” they said.

“He's too tired.” But they were wrong. Jesusalways had time for children.Don't ever send them away!” Jesus said. “Bring the little ones to me.”Now, if you had been there, what do you think – would you have had to line up quietly to see Jesus? Do you think Jesus would have asked you how good you'd been before he'd give you a hug? Would you have had to be on your best behavior? And get dressed up? And not speak until you're spoken to?Or...would you have done just what these children did' run straight up to Jesus and let him pick you up in his arms and swing you and kiss you and hug you and then sit you onhis lap and listen to your stories and your chats?”You see, children loved Jesus, and they knewthey didn't need to do anything special for Jesus to love them. All they needed to do was to run into his arms. And so that's just what they did.Well, after all the laughing and games, Jesus turned to his helpers and said, “No matter how big you grow, never grow up so much that you lose your child's heart: Full of trust in God. Be like these children. They are the most important in my kingdom.
