SGPGI Newsletter 2009 Annual Issue 11

The beginning of a new year is theperfect time to take stock of the

year gone by. New Year is also thetime to take positive resolutions. Weare trying to do the both. The annualissue 2009 of the SGPGI Newsletteris in your hands. We have tried tobring out just the main highlights of theyear. The events were many and theachievements were overwhelming, but we had to drastically cut off, keeping only the main ones, owing tospace crunch. Hope you will pardonus.

As for the New Year resolution, wehave planned and sincerely workinghard towards bringing out SGPGINewsletter regularly every quarter. The new issue of the SGPGINewsletter will have a lot of real lifestories from every department alongwith its regular features.

We shall strive to be your successpartners and make your dreams cometrue. And our aspirations will only bepossible with your help. Do feed uswith your achievements big or small, your success in the wards… how agone case goes back home smiling…a new research which brings in the rayof hope!!

Your suggestions and feedback aremost important to us. This will help uslearn and improve with time.

Wishing you a Happy & Healthy NewYear, 2010 for you and your family.

From executiveeditor’s desk.....

One’s own dwelling place; theplace where a person lives with

his family; also, one’s birthplace-theseare some of the ways in which thedictionary defines a HOME.

By this definition, this vast sprawling, lush green SGPGI campus is HOMEto a huge number of human beings, plants and animals. We the campusresidents are indeed a privileged lotto stay here tucked away far from themadding crowds in a pollution freezone.

The security and company thatcampus life provides is unparalleled. However there are certain steps thatcould be taken to further improve lifeon the campus. Here are a fewsuggestions:

Ä Pollution free subsidized shuttlebuses to run from point to pointat fixed intervals-this serviceshould extend to the residentialareas including hudood

Ä Revamping of the communitycentre for better utilization of thehuge complex. It can be given overto Spencers/BigBazaar to run–this will not only save everyonetime and petrol, if the place getsbusy., it’ll also discourage vague/nefarious elements from hangingaround which is what is prevalentat present.

Ä Better in campus trafficregulations-maybe occasionalchecks by traffic police to cutdown on underage driving as wellas speeding within the campus (itis quite common and quite scary)

Ä Tightening of security measures sothat what we have is not a falsesense of security but the real thing.

Ä Proper maintenance of the parksand open spaces .Some of theparks should have child friendly

swings, all should be well grassedand have benches.

Ä Provision of a Reading Room/Library –this could be run in theold faculty club premises. Themanpower could be provided bySGPGI or by volunteers fromwithin the campus.

This list is by no means complete andI have to thank the newly revivednewsletter for providing a platformwhere such discussions and views canbe put forth and hopefully we seesome of these put into action soon.

View Points

Lest we forget

We doctors in SGPGIMS alwaysadvice our patients, friends and

family members to have a healthy lifestyle and to eat green vegetables andfruits. We are busy advocating to ourpatients to avoid junk food. But theparadox is a classical example of“Doctors’s Canteen” where one findsall junk food each day and each meal. Most of us have our meals in thecanteen and due to busy life scheduleshave adapted to eat what is availableand hence this results in landing upwith all junk food. Green vegetables, fruits, beans and other healthy foodare perhaps beyond the reach of ourcanteen which is full of potatoes andother junk food items. Only when wepractice what we really preach, wecan expect the society to change forthe better future. I request the higherauthorities to take this matter intoconsideration at their earliest possiblecomfortable time as its high time whenwe need to realize the importance ofgiving healthy life style to the healthcare providers. We need someone tobreak the silence of constantlyadapting to the unhealthy dietary itemsand to ensure availability of betteredibles.

Pooja Ramakant

Junk the junk food

If you are still doing anythingthis year the same way you didit last year, you’re behind thetime.
