Functional performance, innovative solutionsFinding new and eco-friendly ways to deliver increased performance

The market for interior wood fi nishes is incredibly diverse and includes assembled contemporary, reproduction or antique furniture, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, self-assembly fl atstock furniture, offi ce furniture and fl ooring. In addition, different regional preferences mean that coating requirements can vary enormously.

4

Meeting the needs of evolving consumer preferences

Self-assembly fl atstock furniture is become increasingly popular worldwide. This type of furniture provides consumers with a relatively economical opportunity to change their interiors to match changing fashions and gives them easy access to new products. To service this burgeoning market, the automation and industrialization of large furniture manufacturers has led to a demand for systems that reduce coating costs while simultaneously meeting new environmental guidelines. Coating suppliers increasingly want to move away from conventional technologies such as nitrocellulose and acid curing to 1K and 2K water-based systems, polyurethane dispersions or hybrids.

Creating innovative solutions to speed processes

Instantaneous water-based UV and 100 % UV-curing systems increase production speed, reduce energy consumption and accelerate throughput as the fi nished parts can be safely packaged the minute they roll off the production line. BASF's photoinitiators, monomers, oligomers, styrene and acrylic resins and emulsions actively enhance the performance of water-based, solvent-based and energy-curable coatings. Whichever application technique you use – from spraying, curtain coating or brushing to industrial, professional or DIY furniture and fl ooring applications – our products ensure optimum vibrancy, adhesion, durability and light fastness across all applications.

Protecting current and future generations

Consumers continue to expect more from their purchases. Brand owners want innovations in designs, materials, production processes and user-friendly accessories or features. With increasing legislation and pressure to create sustainable solutions, we are helping to develop new alternatives in all coatings applications including the industrial, professional and do-it-yourself markets.

Among our most signifi cant recent developments is our ongoing conversion from solvent-based to solvent-free, water-based or energy-curable technologies as well as reducing volatile organic compounds (VOC). We have also developed lead-free, formaldehyde-free, solvent-free formulations that avoid hazard labeling. This is reassuring for manufacturers and end-consumers alike while offering manufacturers the ability to add eco labels to their fi nished paints and lacquers.

Analyzing eco impacts through the entire life cycle

Developed by BASF in 1996, the Eco-Effi ciency Analysis (EEA) compares the economic and environmental impacts of products and processes through their entire life cycle. The EEA takes into consideration the cost of materials, energy, waste, capital and labor. It also covers environmental impacts that include energy and materials consumption, land use, worker health effects, risk potential, waste and emissions into air and water.

The integrated characterization unit enables you to examine in detail the effects of different formulations on properties such as scratch and chemical resistance.

Specialty solutions for laminate and PVC inks

BASF offers a broad portfolio of high-performance pigments for laminate and PVC inks. These pigments were selected for this specialty application due to their high temperature resistance, high durability, bleeding resistance and fi nal ink stability, which ensure good overall processability and ink performance.

BASF’s pigments meet all the most important requirements for laminate ink formulations, including high color strength, good to excellent light and weather fastnesses, good compatibility with ink components (binders, dispersants) and heat stability. They also show good chemical resistance and dispersibility, stability and low viscosity and are non-abrasive, stick-off-resistant and low-foaming.

Effect pigments create added value

BASF pearlescent, metallic and other effect pigments are suitable for use in laminate inks for gravure printing. They are used to create a wide range of attractive fi nishes from satin, sparkling and metallic effects to pearlescent and iridescent effects, both in white and in a full range of colors and shades. Used in combination with our other pigments and pigment preparations, BASF's effect pigments give designers complete freedom to create almost any color or shade, from vibrant primary colors to the most subtle, stylish and exclusive coatings.

Functional value in tough applications

PVC fl oors are a very practical option for fl oor coverings. They are highly water-resistant, easy to install and clean. Available in many colors and patterns, PVC fl oors can be used anywhere from kitchens to living rooms, offi ce spaces or factory fl oors, adding style and practicality. Inks for coloring

PVC fl oor coverings need to be extremely tough and resilient because they are usually exposed to hard wear. For this reason, they must display high adhesion to substrates and good light and weather fastnesses as well as high chromaticity, good rheology, good drying speeds and resistance to sticking to metal surfaces during printing. BASF's pigments are suitable for use in all printing processes including gravure, screen and digital printing and for all water-based, solvent-based and energy-curable ink formulations.

Small quantities, big differences – innovative formulation

additives for increased coating performance
