The Post-Star’s Nie program provides reduced newspaper subscriptions (75% of cost is subsidized by The Post-Star), free educational services and curriculum materials to schools and community learning centers throughout the region.

NIE Programs & Services: Newspapers-in-Education (NIE) provides free educational services and dynamic curriculum materials to schools and community learning centers throughout the region.

Mondayseach monday The Post-Star’s NIE program features “My Kid Scoop,” to enhance literacy skills of our youngest readers. “My Kid Scoop” features puzzles and activities designed to help children learn to read and write in a fun and engaging manner. it provides the perfect opportunity for fami-lies to enjoy the newspaper together.

TuesdaysNewspapers are the number one source for information but also offer opportunities to read for pleasure. each Tuesday The Post-Star’s NIE program offers readers a serialized story. The stories range in number of chapters and provide readers of all ages a literary experience that is accessible, portable and educa-tional. Teachers, parents, caregivers and students across the region look forward to each week’s chapter.

Wednesdayseach wednesday we celebrate and respect the voices of young people in our newest feature “Xtra Cred.” designed for middle- and high school aged students, “Xtra Cred” provides young readers a forum to express opinions and thoughts in response to questions focused on authentic and relevant topics.

Services:• Tours of The Post-star• Professional development for educators• workshops for students (Writer’s Workshop, Commercial Media)

Special Publications: • The Honor Roll (4 issues per year highlighting the academic accomplishments of students) • New Teacher Welcome publication in conjuction with the arcc • Special educational tabloids based on the needs of our schools

Curriculum Projects: • each year The Post-Star’s NIE program develops special curriculum projects to engage young readers in unique learning experiences

Programs:• Stock Market Simulation Game (a mock simulation with real world learning lessons)• The Post-Star Academic Bowl (a challenging quiz bowl played by teams from over 20 schools)

NIE Sponsors Information:Newspapers-in-Education (NIE) is supported by sponsorships & donations from companies and individuals throughout the region.

Why become a sponsor or donor?research indicates that reading newspapers helps students achieve in the classroom. it also suggests that students who have a better understand-ing of his/her community feel more connected and have a more positive perception of the region he/she lives in.

Your sponsorship or donation affords teachers throughout the region an opportunity to use newspapersin the classroom. The Post-star subsidizes 75% of the cost of newspapers while also providing a full-range of services. Teachers pay 12% and the remainder is supported by donations and sponsorships. in special cases, we provide newspapers and services at no cost.

How are sponsors recognized for their contributions?sponsors are appreciated and are recognized in many ways throughout the year.

• sponsor’s names and/or logos appear weekly with our in-paper programs (My KidScoop, Family Reading Serial, Xtra Cred and special curriculum projects)

• sponsor’s names and/or logos appear monthly within a “Thank You for being an NIE sponsor” advertisement

• sponsor’s names and/or logos appear bi-weekly in special Nie promotional advertisements related to programs such as vacation donations, stock market simulation, and The Post-star academic Bowl (Some ads also appear in the TV Guide insert)

• sponsor’s names and/or logos are displayed on the Nie website

• sponsor’s receive a plaque of recognition to place at their establishment

• Teachers receive list of sponsors and students often write “Thank You” letters explaining how the newspapers were used in the classroom
