ll A local business owner says enough is enough, and asks when are people going to start respecting the parking laws around town?

In most towns parking is problem-atic, however in Waiuku the problem seems not to be with amount of park-ing but rather with who is using the parking and for how long.

Strong link

between

bullying & suicide..

There is a strong link between

bullying and suicide, as suggested

by recent bullying-related

suicides in the US and other

countries.

Bullying refers to any unwanted, repeated aggressive behaviour against another person that is intentional and involves an imbalance of power. It can be physical (hitting or tripping), verbal (name-calling or teasing), or relational or social (spreading rumours or excluding someone from a group). A child can be a perpetrator, a victim or both.

A young male from Ireland named Joshua Unsworth hanged himself after frequent cyber bullying on a social network that he belonged to. He was teased about his father being a farmer and peers made fun of his dating habits. This constant barrage of bullying lead to depression and suicide.

Take a break...

Quote of the week

Brought to you by Tom O’Neil www.achievementexpert.com

-Winston Churchill

“If you’re going through hell keep going.”

Public TransportI would like to reply to David Slack’s letter. I understand

you are frustrated with what you see as a waste of your rates but I have a few pointers for you. First, you are wel-come to drive your car but if you want less traffic, public transport is the way to give you your freedom.

If the 550 to 600 passengers on those trains were on the road in cars with you each morning it would mean even worse traffic than we already have. In cities around the world the only way to free up more people to move more, is faster public transport.

Secondly I feel you and others who would never look at catching public transport are forgetting that there are people who have no other option but to use it. I am not talking about just those who are unable to afford the cost of a car and the petrol required, I am also talking about the blind. Those with epilepsy, those who have had a recent head injury and are medically not allowed to drive for a time. Even those who have lost their drivers license due to demerit points.

There are many reasons for people to need public trans-port, and we never know when we or someone we love will be in that position. As such I ask you to not think of it as an expense you will never get a return on, but look at it as an insurance policy, one which you can hope to never need to use.

Julianne Weller, Pukekohe

Andrew wanted to make one thing extremely clear, they may be chasing fifty million dollars in cost reduction but they will never compromise the safety of their employees. He says “we won’t sac-rifice the environmental side of our business and the role we play in the region or in New Zealand”

There are two points here1) Everyone (except the gov-

ernment), accepts that the Emis-sions Trading Scheme, set up as a response to climate change, is a failed policy, and has not achieved its stated aim of reduc-ing New Zealand’s green house gas emissions. Instead of lower-ing green house emissions, the NZETS has overseen a rise in these emissions. As such it is not fit for purpose. The Green Party officially has called for the NZETS to be scrapped, as has New Zea-land First. Carbon trading has been a dismal failure. And has cost the tax payer $billions for negative returns. So I think the public can live with Andrew Gar-ey’s demand that the Glenbrook Steel Mill not be subject to it.

2) Andrew Garey states that he will not compromise the safety of his workforce, or the environ-ment. Taken at face value this means that as well as being re-leased from the ETS, the Glen-brook steel mill needs a cash investment of some $50 million. Some of this money (and possi-bly even more) needs to be used to explore carbon emissions re-duction and mitigation, or risk going out of business. Such an investment would future proof the steel mill and protect jobs.

Green Steel - The government pledged $255 million in loans and gifts to bail out Solid Energy, money that Gareth Hughes of the Green Party said would have been “better spent on paying for a just transition to jobs that don’t fry the planet”. Instead, most of this money went to the foreign banks to cover their losses, and far from saving jobs, on receiving their bail out, Solid Energy began a round of savage lays offs. The government has now announced that none of the paid out money is recoverable. Instead of lin-ing the pockets of bankers for no return, the government (and private investors) should look at investing in making the steel mill a zero carbon operation.

This can be done in two ways, [1] reconstituting the steel mill’s decommissioned arc furnace to regain the ability to recycle scrap steel. [2] turning to bio fuels like wood waste instead of coal.

If Drax, one the greatest sin-gle point source CO2 emitters in the world, can do it, so can New Zealand Steel, this is the only sure way of ensuring that the Glenbrook steel mill has a fu-ture in the age of climate change. Flogging a dead horse!

The Minister for climate change issues, Tim Groser shows himself and his government to be completely out of touch on the issues, releasing a formulaic response to the Post’s questions in which the ETS will continue, and the Taxpayer will continue to pick up the tab. This is short term thinking and in the long run a recipe for disaster.

Another perspective on Karioitahi Beach

Adding another perspective to vehicles on the beach discussion. The bylaw is necessary to control the impact of Franklin’s increasing population which increases the num-ber of people who use the beach. If we want to preserve the unique character that draws people to Karioitahi, then measures like the bylaw need to be put in place to ensure that the dunes and foreshore remain intact, not just for our pleasure now but for future generations.

Irresponsible vehicle use in the dunes destroy the grass-es that hold them together, without the sand dunes the cliff faces will erode faster, increased vehicle compaction of the tidal zone will result in less shellfish, less shellfish will decrease the numbers of surf fish to be caught.

Beach ecosystems are extremely fragile and could cope in previous years with small numbers of vehicles, horses and people. The bylaw doesn’t prevent people from using and enjoying the beach it just puts more responsibility on the owners of vehicles and horse owners because this is what has the most damaging impact.

Police call for witnesses to Waiuku crashCounties Manukau Police are seeking information from the public regarding a fatal crash which occurred on Karioitahi Road in Waiuku.

ll The dark coloured, small four wheel drive was travelling south in the early hours of August 28, 2015 when it appears the driver has lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a bank. The driver, a male in his 30s died at the scene.

A member of the public saw the car and called emergency services at around 5:25am that morning.

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have come across the crash site or saw the vehicle be-tween 4am and 5am. Anyone with information can contact crash in-vestigator Constable Graham Mako on 09 215 4828.

Information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Former Pukekohe High School student, Antoine Ogilvie, has taken out two major wins at the recent New Zealand Fashion Week, after being involved within the industry for only seven months.

Emma [email protected]

The last time the Post caught up with Antoine he was making a name for himself in the equestrian scene. Now, studying at New Zealand Fashion Tech, the 18 year old bud-ding designer was not on-ly the winner of the High Fashion category, but the overall winner for Walk the Line. We were able to catch up with Antoine to learn more about his win-ning entry, and to hear about his future plans. How did you break into the Fashion industry?

In May I launched my website, www.an-toineogilvie. com which has since become the platform upon which I carry out my fashion and lifestyle blogging. Since then I’ve been ap-proached for collabora-tion by industry names as well as businesses and tertiary providers and am currently interning with NZ Fashion Label, Lonely Hearts. I’m also a contrib-uting fashion editor for the Men’s fashion and life-style platform, SI Empire.

Did you have to apply for a position at NZ Fashion Week? One of my friends from Fashion school actu-ally informed me about the Walk the Line com-petition at fashion week and he sent me a link. After some investiga-tion I ended up suc-cessfully applying on-line for the competition. Tell me about your model I understand she is Frank-lin resident as well? My model, Greta Van Den Brink, 16 years, is one of my best friends. She’s been signed for just over a year with Red11, New Zealand’s most suc-cessful agency. I was real-ly lucky to have her walk-ing for me before she got snapped up by the bigger designers! Greta is also a Franklin local and lives in Karaka. Tell me about your en-try, what made it a win-ner?

My design was a simple pair of high-waist, button up, charcoal culottes, tailored to hug the waist and hips, but wide on the leg. The second element of my design was a stark white crop top with a V-slit in the front. A wide-neck charcoal collar with bleached ostrich feather filaments was the centre of focus on the crop top, as I felt it added a femi-nine edge to the design. While the design process took two months, the

actual construction of the garments only hap-pened over a two week period and involved a lot of trial and error. I believe the reason my design won was possibly due to the realistic wearability of the outfit in respect to the brief. What made you change your career direction from horses? Are you still involved? As I began studying at New Zealand Fashion Tech my interests and priorities slowly changed and gravitated more to-ward fashion industry focused ventures. Rid-ing was super fun and taught me so much, but at the end of the day the

Fashion and Equestrian scenes are massive in-dustries which don’t co-exist well. Because of how much time needs to be invested and I had to come to a decision to choose between the two. What are your future plans? Where to from here? I plan on launching my la-bel late September/early October 2015 which will silently operate through-out the next two years of study. It will be a lot of hard work to add to the juggling act, but I know how long companies can take to become profitable so I’m determined to get it out there, and into the market.

One of Tuakau’s unsung heroes has been placed in the limelight recently when he received the Insignia of an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Janine [email protected]

ll Mr Te Wahapu Rapana, or Paul Brown as most Tuakau locals know him, was awarded this merit for services to Maori, from Governor-General Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae in late August at Government House in Auck-land.

He has lived in Tuakau for many years and was always on hand to help where needed. Without his knowl-edge, his daughter Rosalie organised all the required paperwork which was prepared by Te Kotahitanga Marae and the Huakina Development Trust. A nomination had been discussed by the family years earlier however ac-cording to Rosalie, “We did not really know how to go about it then and left it.”

Rosalie was the contact person for the nomination and worked hard to keep the award under wraps. “We wanted to keep it a surprise, but when the Queen’s birthday honours list came out we had no choice be-

cause people, especially media, were trying to track him down.”

The whanau had to read him the invitation to the ceremony several times and it took him a few hours to realise what had been bestowed upon him.

Mr Brown, who is in his early eight-ies, has been actively involved with maraes from Pukekohe to Waikaretu. He was involved in Kohanga Reo, fol-lowed the Kingitanga movement pas-sionately, was a Maori Warden and part of the local fire brigade for many years.

He was also on the board of the Huakina Trust and the Wananga o Raukawa and helped build a marae at Port Waikato. Mr Brown was involved with environmental issues and the discussion surrounding Auckland’s quest for access to water from the Waikato River.

Though he was a mover and shaker around the town, he could not have done that alone, said his daughter. “Behind dad there was always mum,” says Rosalie. “She was the backbone of dad.”

While only six people were allowed to accompany Mr Brown to Gov-ernment House, over 130 extended whanau and friends gathered two weeks ago after the awards ceremony at the Tuakau Cosmopolitan Club for a celebration dinner.

SelectaDNA campaign received great responsell The SelectaDNA Operation, which was launched in Pukekohe on Tuesday, August 18, is now complete after receiving an overwhelming response. Staff visited and delivered 160 SelectaDNA packs throughout the Franklin area including a number of addresses in Waiuku and the surrounding rural areas of Otaua, Patumahoe, Waiau Pa, Glenbrook, Clarks Beach and Kingseat. These were predominantly aimed at local rural resi-dents who had previously been victims of a burglary and the packs were positively received by the home-owners, with Police members demonstrating the use of the property marking kits.“The response from those receiving the SelectaDNA kits was very positive,” states Inspector Kay Lane, Area Prevention Manager at Pukekohe. “The prevention message of ensuring all homes, sheds and garages are secured at all times was pushed by the attending staff, along with register-ing all serial numbers on the SNAP website, www.snap.org.nz.”It is important to remember Police need your help to prevent burglary offending, much of which is oppor-tunistic. Ensure you secure your property, includ-ing garages, sheds, close your gates, and call 111 im-mediately with sightings of suspicious people and vehicles.

Waiuku celebrates 100 years of scoutsJo [email protected]

ll Waiuku Scouts encourage ev-eryone to come to the Tamakae Reserve this Saturday, to help cel-ebrate their scouting centenary.

The celebrations begin at 10am, and there will be plenty of activi-ties to enjoy, including a bouncy castle, catapults, tandem bungee, rope bridge, knot tying, pioneer-ing and a blind burma trail. There will even be the chance to row in a cutter, which will be operating in the morning. The Scouts will al-so have a sausage sizzle going as they are fundraising to go to Jam-boree next year

Scouting began in the Waiu-ku District in 1915, only seven years after it was founded in New Zealand. Since that time, Waiu-ku Scouts have grown to be one of New Zealand’s longest run-ning and most popular outdoor recreation organisations. Run by a group of 16 dedicated leaders, the Waiuku Scouts have a strong group of over 80 youth, ranging from six to 17 years of age.

“If you are an old scout we

would love to see you and please wear your scarf if you have it. Our youth would love you to come and be a part of our celebrations,” says Group Leader, Jo Brightwell.

Activities will run from 10am to 4pm, with the official cake cutting at 2pm.

ll Pollok Designer, Almas Liyana, recently won the nationwide Adults Colouring Compe-tition, organised by Whitcoulls. With over 2700 entries, it was a major win for Almas, a former Waiuku College student, and a young gradu-ate from Victoria University. Almas has returned home to Pollok to teach various art classes from her mother’s art studio.“I hope to create a hub for creative minds to come together and use art for relaxation. I would like to teach art as well and run to various cre-ative workshops for the local community.” says Almas.

On this day...

In this Article we will examine something that has arisen from the last few books I have just read; and they are all on the subject of “Deliverance,” and each of the different Authors has said in essence the same sort of thing, that this Demonic Infestation comes in through various “Doors” and after eviction of the infestation, these doors must be closed to prevent re-infestation. Now Door = Decision in the Hebrew mind-set, so let us always link these two words.

The Bible has this admonition also for us in Genesis 4:7 “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” Also we have this as found in James 1:14-16 “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.”

Here James gives us the concept in the concept of a pregnancy, the seed is implanted, things start to grow and to develop, and then out pops a fully developed Sin, which has the consequences of death. There is also in Scripture this concept that this “Sin at the Door” can be just as easily equated to something like a Tiger, Wolf or cranky bear, or other big predator crouched there at the Door/Decision, and should the door ever open, even a tiny amount, then it is most likely to bound on inside to cause mayhem. Deliverance Ministry also affirms this concept; if you have a door then you have a potential disaster waiting. The solution is to lock these doors, throw away the keys, and then to probably board them up and to brick over the opening for a permanent sealing. Remember Satan complained to God that he could not get access to Job; as Job had boarded up all his doors and also in his families lives (Job 1:10).

Back to our Door = Decision; we have Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee” so perfect peace is promised to all who have their thoughts or decisions stayed or focused on Jesus Christ. But; on the other side we have this list that is most interesting, as most Demonic Infestations have a Demon with the very function that is mentioned in this very next verse.

Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying’s, murders, drunkenness, revelling’s, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they

which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” These people miss out on Heaven as they opened a Doorway/Pathway, and let Infestation in and this corrupted them and thus made them unfit for the purity of heaven and were thus shut out; just like the foolish Bridesmaids were.

The very next verses in Galatians though, give us a totally different perspective Galatians 5: 22-25 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” This list is interesting in the fact that there is not a single doorway mentioned, sin cannot gain access as there is no avenues or entrance points, just a fullness of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. All the affections and lust has been crucified.

From my study, it is very interesting how often the various Authors comment that Demonic Infestation is not happy with adoration and praise to God. There are very helpful tools, such as Christian TV, just like “FirstLight” on Freeview Channel 26, when run 24/7 just wears the resistance down on Demons as this is what they used to sing and enjoy (before they fell), and now that they have lost their places in Heaven, true prayer and Praise is almost more than they can handle. Sometimes they just pack up and leave for a more sinful place to inhabit; they love music with a “Strong Beat” and it matters not what label is on the disc, strong beat enables Demons to come on in, and even, and especially if it is in a Church, and then God often just moves off out and leaves those poor misguided ones within to a very different, and now “Unholy Spirit.”

For the advanced practitioner of “Deliverance,” we need to re-read this verse set. Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying’s, murders, drunkenness, revelling’s, and such like.” Each of the word-characteristics is so close to the correct wording for “Groupings,” “Demonic Ranking,” or “Demonic Hierarchy,” that Demonic Infestation associate, or group together, under these banners or headings. So find one in the group and you will most likely find more associated together with a similar function. Sort of like weeds, find one, and there will most likely be another close by.

Remember James 1:14 “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” Quote “The heart must be faithfully sentineled, or evils without will awaken evils within, and the soul will wander in darkness. “Gird up the loins of your mind,” Peter wrote, “be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; . . . not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: but as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” {AA 518}

Dear Reader, please be careful of what you feed your mind, as the internal lusts awakened could well land you in a very nasty position, and Demonic Infestation. Time to brick up the doors to the soul.

Glenbrook resident Ron Rooney cel-ebrated his 99th birthday last week and decided to splash out on wine for his friends at the Franklin Bridge Club in Pukekohe to mark the day. The club in response put on a fabulous lunch last Friday.

Mr Rooney plays bridge most Fridays and stills deals a mean hand, say his fel-low members. He says he thoroughly enjoys life in the Glenbrook Resthome and he says its staff and residents put on a fabulous birthday party for him on Thursday. Franklin’s Paralympic shooters take on SydneyYesterday marked the one year countdown to Rio Olympics, and Paralympic Shooter, Michael Johnson is currently in preparation for the global event.

Emma Sharplin email: [email protected]

The Waiuku resident and a further ten athletes, including Waiau Pa’s Grant Sharman, are heading to Sydney tomor-row to compete in the IPC World Cup, which is also marks as a quota qualifier for Rio Paralympics 2016.

“Paralympic Shooting has come a long way since I first began in 2004. There is so much more professional de-velopment and recognition. This is the biggest para-shooting team New Zea-land has ever had, and I believe Grant has a great opportunity to make it into a final and quite possibly score a quota

for New Zealand.” Former captain and coach of the Wheel Blacks, Grant has on-ly recently taken up shooting, with Mi-chael saying that he has great potential.

“He wasn’t too keen to begin with, but after coming with me to the range a couple of times, he has now become hooked.” Although Michael has scored a quota for the New Zealand team from competing in his first world Champi-onships in Suhl Germany in July 2014, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is guar-anteed a position at the Paralympics.

“Even though I scored the quote, I still have to work hard to maintain my posi-tion in the field. Competing in events, coaching and training is a full time role and I need to be at the top of my game - I’m not allowed to slack off!”

To mark the one year to Rio celebra-tions, Paralympic New Zealand and ACC have partnered to create The Spirit of

Michael Johnson with his trophies from the Shooting World Cup in Turkey earlier this year.

The annual Waiuku Rotary Monster Book fair is been held again this weekend, with or-ganizers saying that it is one not to be missed.

Among the thousands of books, there will also be jigsaw puzzles, records, CDs, DVDs for sale, ensuring that there is something for all to enjoy. Since the first book sale in 2007, thousands of dollars has been raised, with the

funds invested back into the community to assist a very wide range of organisations and individuals.

The annual event will be held over Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, in the Waiuku War Memorial Hall, with plenty of parking available in the old New World car park. Doors open at 8.30am each day.

Gold initiative, a long-term campaign designed to increase awareness and raise funds to support Para-Sport in the community. Held recently, 365 children took part in a para-fun day with New Zealand’s best Paralympians, which in-cluded Michael.

We wish Michael and Grant the best of luck in their upcoming competition in Sydney and look forward to catching up with them upon their return.

Being the “Ordinary” BusinessHow often in business do you need to look at your competitors? Be better than them to attract clients and business?

How often do you look online and see the “suc-cess” of those travelling to exotic destinations, clients all over the world, big money workshops and speaking?

How often do you hear about products being sold in China, America, and Europe?

And, considering those, how often do you wonder are you good enough? Will your busi-ness be that “success-ful”? Well STOP.

If you aren’t happy with what you have now, how will you be happy when you have more?

I work with lots of small successful busi-nesses. They don’t trade globally, they don’t have big money work-shops and few are on the speaking circle, in-ternational or national. Yet, they are successful. They know they are suc-cessful. Yet they are or-dinary, nothing special or standout in the glob-al population. Just or-dinary people like you and me.

They make money and profits. They have competitors, but they still make sales.

So what makes the or-dinary successful? They are living the lifestyle THEY want. Not what someone else has, not what people tell them they SHOULD have, but the exact lifestyle they WANT.

Often, in business, you are asked about your goal, your end point, and the reason you are in business in the first place. There will be a big hairy au-dacious goal in there somewhere. However, when working with cli-ents on goals, the first “end point” is usually the goal that they think they should have. It’s a goal based upon their perception of the busi-nesses around them and their perception of suc-cess, based upon the media that they have seen/read/watched.

After six months in business I usually sit down with the client and ask about their dreams. This is where we get to revealing the true goals, the true wants, based upon the person and business in front of me not the perception they had. When the ordinary person is revealed, their journey towards their own success begins. It’s not a long process but it is an essential one.

Next time you are looking at your compet-itors “success” just ask yourself, if that was me, would I really want it? Sometimes, being ordi-nary and you is the best success you’ll ever have.

September is Wills month!

ll This month is Wills Month which is about encouraging New Zea-landers to update their current will, or if you do not have one then this is a perfect opportunity to get it done.

Your Will sets out your wishes for how your affairs are to be managed after you are gone. A Will provides for the executors who are nominat-ed by yourself to car-ry out wishes that you specify. These can be things such as whom you would like to pro-vide for, the guardians of your children if an-ything was to happen to you and your part-ner then your children will be looked after and cared for by a guardian appointed by you. Your will even goes as far as to outline your wishes at your funeral.

Your Will is just as important to keep it up to date. As families and re-lationships change, if you have not up dated your will then upon your death whatever was recorded in your last will is deemed to be your wishes. Therefore the importance of keep-ing your Will up to date is immense – especially when it comes to naming

guardians for children under 18. As your children are the most precious things you leave behind. It’s extreme-ly important that you have an up-to-date Will that names a testamenta-ry guardian for your children, in case something happens to both parents.

Every adult should have an up-to-date Will – it’s one of the most valua-

ble legal documents you’ll have. If you pass away without a Will your loved ones may face difficulty sorting out your wish-es and what happens may not be what you would want or expect. If there is no Will, the

law determines how your estate is di-vided, and what happens to the peo-ple who depend on you, after you’re gone, which will be completely dif-ferent to the wishes that you yourself hold. Therefore in order to make sure that this is adverted and your wish-es are carried out then a Will is need-ed to protect your assets and invest-ments. So this month make the effort and get yourself a Will or get your Will updated.

Editorial Supplied by Arnet Law

ll Taking part in the business class and help develop the Leuk Lid has inspired the Tuakau Col-lege year 13 students, who say the project has taught them a lot. Their company’s chief executive, Kane Edwards, says it is the rea-son he will be studying commerce at university from next year.

The entire class has learned much in the last six months about life in business, from teamwork to product devel-opment, its realisation, sales and marketing. Their first 240 lids are sold and they have or-dered another 240.

It was by no means plain sailing. When the idea to make a lid for drink cans was born they dabbled with making it them-selves. “We tried 3D printing,” says Kane, who knew someone who owned a 3D printer. But they found it didn’t work. They couldn’t find anyone in New Zealand who could make the lid for them. When they thought about making it them-

selves again they found that expen-sive machinery and moulds would be required. In the end they found a manufacturer in China.

The name leuk lid signifies their support for the Leukemia Founda-tion, which was inspired by the loss of a popular Tuakau College teach-er and Assistant Principal,Whaea Jacque, to leukemia last year. A quarter of any profits made from

the sale of the lids will go to the Leu-kemia Foundation.

They joined many other school business projects around the country in the Lion Foundation’s Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), which gave all the information they needed to start a company,

find and market a product. At the YES trade fair they showed their product which went down really well. Sitting up late the night before they assembled, labelled, packaged their product ready for the fair.

“YES is suitable for anyone,” they say. “It is not just for those interest-ed in business. If you are in the art you can design things, for example. We recommend YES to anyone.”

They enlisted the help of a fellow student to design their company logo.

Initially seven students made up Jacckmin Downs Industries, a name incor-porating all their names.

Kane Edwards was CEO, Aman Chand was sales and operations director, Connor Ewing sales di-rector, Ian West-Stevens

financial director, Duane Tom-linson, marketing director, Jaime Coyle Bennenbroek communica-tion director. Search for Leuk Lid on facebook to order your lid.Below: Ian, Connor, Kane, Aman and Duane are at the end of their YES project.

Happy ScHool dayS

Farewell to Olivia who turns 5 in

September.

Last Wednesday saw Lewis Road Creamery launch its new range of milk flavours and after the frenzy the Whit-takers Chocolate Milk caused, the ladies at The Post couldn’t wait to try the new flavours. Thanks to our good friends at the Goodness Grocer in Waiuku, we managed to get our hands on both the new vanilla and coffee flavours.

The vanilla milk is made using Heilala vanilla grown in the South Pacific, while Coffee Supreme has supplied a Brazilian blend espresso for the coffee milk.

Overall, the team was let down by the two new flavours, with all admitting that the Whittakers Chocolate Milk was still the best of the three. See below for what the team has to say.

HEILALA VANILLA COFFEE SUPREMEVanessa This tasted bland to me and

lacked a genuine vanilla flavour.

This certainly had a strong cof-fee flavour but tasted too bit-ter and not sweet enough for me. “Overall quite disappoint-ing especially when I compare these to their first big hit, the chocolate flavour, which was awesome!”

Emma Not what I expected but it wasn’t too sweet, which is a refreshing change.

Tasted like I was drinking my cold cup of coffee. “A huge coffee fan, I was disappointed to say the least. I think I will stick with the chocolate milk, as that was delicious.”

Kim I liked the flavour, it was a bit odd, but reminds me of some-thing from when I was a kid. Strange aftertaste, but you get use to it.

Terribly bitter on your first mouthful, second mouthful not so bad, but still tasted like it needed sweetener of some sort. “On review, I had the bright idea of mixing the two together, which tasted pretty good. The syrupy-ness of the vanilla counteracted the bitterness of the coffee, so it turned out okay. I still prefer Whittaker’s Chocolate Milk.”

ll ACG Strahallan is delight-ed that Niketa Wells has been awarded the Under 16 Sports-woman of the Year and Jared Wood has been awarded Un-der 16 Sportsman of the Year at the recent 2015 Franklin Sports awards. The ACG stu-dents were lucky enough to win their categories for their achievements in Tae-kwon Do. Jared has represented New Zealand at an interna-tional level earlier this year at the world championships in Italy, where he received a sil-ver medal.

“Every year this is a very popular event as it really repre-sents the pinnacle of achieve-ment in our local area. We are so proud of the hard work all of our students put into their individual and team sports throughout the course of the year. The recognition that comes with this event is the icing on the cake,” says Robin Kirkham, Principal.

The equestrian teams also did ex-tremely well and were finalists in the following categories: Equestrian Pre-training team, Equestrian Combined team and the Equestrian Navy team.

Above: ACG Strathallan student, Jar-ed Woods, wins silver at Taekwondo World Championships earlier this year. Recently he has been named Franklin U16 sportsman of the year.

West coast erosion worsensThe erosion at Port Waikato has become increasingly worse in recent weeks. Much of the former lower carpark has fallen onto the beach below. The previous position of the Surf Lifesaving Club’s watch tower has disappeared.

Janine [email protected]

ll About 100 locals de-scended on the Surf Lifesaving Club’s club-house on Saturday to discuss options on the situation and give feed-back on council plans for the area. The dis-cussion on beach ac-cess was debated and short and long term op-tions were discussed at length.

Car parking will soon become a big issue and everyone agreed it needed to be close to any beach access. Lo-cals said they fear car parks away from access routes to the beach will stimulate people swim-ming in areas that are

both dangerous and not patrolled.

Community facilities at Sunset Beach are al-so under threat. Locals would like to see a new community hall with a commercial kitchen, changing rooms, storage space for clubs that use the hall and a garden or park to surround it.

Consensus seemed to be that separate pedes-trian and vehicular ac-cess are needed.

Too many vehicles on the beach driving close

to the dunes were a real problem, some say, oth-ers, that no cars should be allowed in the dunes, where a quad bike track exists.

It was suggested that more signs were needed to show where vehicles can and can’t go and how fast they can go. This had been done in the past and locals claim it had worked at that time.

Cars racing on the beach and quad bikes zooming along were also perceived as a problem.

There is only one way to get onto Sunset Beach, and at times it becomes congested.

The access way is cur-rently littered with de-bris washed up on the high tides. It is used by cars, tractors, access to launch boats, by quad bikes, and surf club ve-hicles.

The feedback from the community will be tak-en into account when fi-nal decisions are made regarding the future of the area.

ll Beach Care Port Waikato has found two banded dotterel nests in the centre of the dunes and they are in danger of be-ing disturbed by passers by.

“One of the nests is currently on a shelly section which is not fenced off ,” says co-ordinator Karen Opie.

She asks dune users to take extra care when in the dunes.

“Stick to the main tracks and don’t lin-ger as the dotterel will get off the nest to try and lead you away. Also if you’re walking through with your dogs please keep them on the main track and on a lead while you move though the area.”

A fence will be erected this week to pro-tect the nests, which are very well cam-ouflaged, which is why extra care needs to be taken.

Instead, he elaborated on how ‘they were sick and tired of fixing the half baked ideas that were implemented years ago’, and rambled on about the City Rail Link – which had very little relevance to Franklin. It could even be suggested that the Mayor has tun-nel vision when it comes to the City Rail Link.

After his ram-ble, it was then suggested by an attendee that ‘isn’t non-electrifying the Pukekohe line a half baked idea?’ Again, another question that was left open and not really answered.

Instead, Auck-land Transport are currently looking into short term options for Pukekohe, which includes battery technology to possibly be placed into the existing

trains. This would enable the trains to reach Pukekohe and return back to Papakura and remove the need for diesel trains. Auckland Transport gen-eral manager, Mark Lambert, said that there was no certainty it was possible,

but an initiative that they were investi-gating. This raises the point on who is actu-ally paying for the investigation and wouldn’t the money invested be better spent on electrify-ing the Pukekohe line?

Speaker after speaker tried in vain to offer assur-ance and comfort that everything

was being done to fix the situation but nobody was buying into that. We still have no solution to our transport is-sues across Franklin. Award Winning Residential & Lifestyle Real Estate Agent

Mayor slaughtered at Pukekohe transport meeting

Transport issues.

Mayor Len Brown offers nothing new other than a broad smile and a sympathetic ear to a room full of angry and unhappy people

Steve Douglas / Emma [email protected] / [email protected]

llMayor Len Brown lined up an impressive list of politicians and bureaucrats all ready to talk trans-port and win over the Franklin crowd. He was a big hit– Yeah Nah, really – Nah he got slaughtered.

When Auckland Mayor, Len Brown visited Puke-kohe last Tuesday to discuss transporting issues, he was warned that there will be many disgruntled resi-dents of Franklin, but that might have been a slight understatement.

The meeting was held in the hope of an open dis-cussion between the Mayor of Auckland and the res-idents of Franklin about the public transport issues. As most are aware, the Auckland train system has been electrified recently, with the network ending at Papakura. It is between the Papakura and Puke-kohe line that there have been major issues, includ-ing substantial delays and unreliability of the diesel locomotives.

While the mayor tried his best to keep the mood light and humorous, the tension could be felt once you entered the room.

Residents who were able to attend unleashed their anger and frustration over the fact that Pukekohe will not be getting an upgrade to their public trans-port system any time soon, as well as the constant daily issues they faced while using the trains. These included; lack of suitable facilities such as a ‘train station that leaks worse than a tea strainer’, lack of car parks, disability areas and very little or no secu-rity.

An apology was given from the Mayor at the be-ginning of the meeting for the poor transition of the electrified network, which did very little to diffuse the angst felt by the residents. He went on to explain that there is currently no funds allocated for $110m upgrade to electrify 18km of track. However, a ques-tion raised by Jon Reeves as to how over $250m was recently approved to upgrade a 4km stretch of mo-torway expansion from Manurewa to Drury, left the Mayor pretty much speechless.

Franklin - Perfect Strike X

Mayor - 1+1=3

Franklin rolls a perfect strike. You would have to feel sorry for Len Brown’s office having lined up the ‘perfect team’ to talk to and address the transport is-sues across Franklin. However one by one they were knocked over. The transport issues remain largely unresolved with the Mayor, local government and the local board extremely unpopular because of it. Could transport and Franklin be the undoing of Len Brown’s legacy? Who else will be a casualty of this transport war?

1000th building milestone for CustomkitWorking from a small area in the back of timber yard, little did Michael Anselmi know that 22 years later, he and his team would be celebrating its 1000th building.

Customkit Buildings originally started in the yard of Pukekohe Timber in 1993, with just Michael running the show for 18 months. As the business expanded moving more into specialised timber barns and barn style homes, he realised that he could no longer work from 5am to 8pm, seven days week – things had to change. He now has a team of 11 staff at their Pukekohe premises and Customkit design and sell their buildings through-out the nation.

It is incredibly ironic how both Cus-tomkit’s first and 1000th build are located in the Franklin region. The first building, described as a large scale garden and im-plement shed, was completed at Wrights Water Gardens in Patumahoe.

The 1000th building is a project cur-rently being built by long-time Custom kit fans, Robin Verhoef and partner, Ca-sey Costello. It will be positioned in their current project – a lifestyle subdivision development in Pokeno.

Both agree that they keep coming back to Customkit Buildings for the fu-ture buildings in the development due to the great service, open mindedness and

quality of the finished materials deliv-ered to the site. “We’ve never had any problems dealing with them, and have the peace of mind knowing that things will go smoothly. Believe me, this is in-valuable on any building project, but particularly when the scale increases and you have to balance a whole bunch of variables,” says Robin.

The milestone achievement has snuck up on Michael, and he believes that excellent customer service has helped contribute the longevity and success of the business.

“The challenge for us was to be-come a company that people would

feel at home with when coming to dis-cuss housing options. You have to read the market and diversify to survive; oth-erwise you will get left behind. We give the option that allows people to have as much input as they want and are al-ways accommodating to their sugges-tions and ideas. There is something so special about building your own home and we want to harness that.”

Michael is excited for the future of Customkit Buildings, although asked where he will be in the next 20 years he replied ‘hopefully retired.’ The 1000th building should be completed by the end of September.

Anyone who has to commute daily from anywhere in the Franklin region into Auckland will know what a frustrating ex-perience it is crawling in near gridlock traffic on the Southern Motorway and State Highway 22 during peak periods. Week after week there are articles and let-ters about the issues with the train service, with all the politi-cians and agencies all pointing the finger at each other.

Meanwhile a massive amount of housing and development is planned for the Franklin region with no upgrades to the trans-port system planned any time soon to serve this big increase in numbers. Let alone to ad-dress the current problems. Providing much needed hous-ing across Auckland is one thing, but the infrastructure to support all these people needs to be in-cluded at the same time.

The answer is to start mak-ing greater use of the underu-tilised rail lines the Franklin re-gion is fortunate enough to have. The politicians, agencies and the Government need to start work-ing together to develop and ex-pand the train service and make trains more accessible to more

people both in the Franklin re-gion as well as further south. Train services could easily be ex-tended south from Pukekohe to serve Tuakau and Pokeno, with switching tracks at Mercer. Sta-tions and park and rides need to be built now at Drury and Paera-ta, as well as at Buckland, Tuakau and Pokeno.

Train services should also be run with these same diesel units from Waiuku to Papakura using the Glenbrook Vintage Railway’s line during the weekday peak periods when the GVR doesn’t generally operate. This would provide a congestion free com-muting option for Waiuku res-idents, as well as providing in-come for the volunteer run GVR.

Let’s break from the habit of only looking at roading solu-tions and buses which don’t fix the congestion problem, by us-ing the rail lines with the diesel units already available, which could be brought into use easily and more cheaply with new sta-tions and park and rides across the region, rather than wait on the big ticket projects of electri-fication and motorway expan-sion. J Williamson, Waiuku

Few scenes capture a country paradise better than contented herds lying on lush pasture under shady trees. But, come winter, scenes of pastoral perfection are often replaced by mires of stinking mud threatening to flood the gumboots.

It’s no good blaming cattle. At weights of around 680kgs or more, it doesn’t take many to cause a lot of damage, or as Tuakau farmer Graham Hunkin puts it, “pound the hell out of the ground!”

“Regular animals of two to three years old can weigh around 550kgs,” he says. “You need good equipment to handle something that size. And they can do a lot of dam-age to you; it only takes one kick for your life to change.”

After researching, Gra-ham abandoned standard-

size cattle for miniature Her-efords. He now runs a breed-ing programme (branded ‘Mini Moos’) from his eight-hectare farm, is chairman of the NZ Miniature Hereford Breeder’s Group and one of the breed’s staunchest sup-porters.

He says miniatures have grown in popularity, now accounting for 10 percent of NZ Hereford Association membership. “I am focus-ing on getting them small-er because they are great for small blocks. They’re not af-fected too adversely by hills and poorer feed that grows there either.”

His ‘minis’ are approxi-mately 60 percent the size of standard Herefords, with a maximum mature weight of 360kgs. They can be easi-ly contained behind electric

fences, and smaller equip-ment is needed. In addition, miniatures have good tem-peraments, are good forag-ers, and can command high-er values. However, Graham warns they must be treated with caution (as all livestock should) and appropriate fa-cilities are needed.

“Having good yards is im-portant; pinning them be-tween a fence and gate isn’t good enough. However han-dling facilities can be min-imal if they’re tame – mine come when I call them! “They keep the grass down and can be fenced with cheap electric fences – cheap-er than a mower, and much less maintenance. I love go-ing out in summer and stand-ing among them; it’s a peace-ful feeling and good for the soul.”

Size matters on small blocks W h AT stock to run on a small block? Novice lifestylers would do well to follow Graham Hunkin’s advice – big isn’t always best.

Left: District Councillor Jan Sedgwick, Mayor Allan Sanson, and MP Lindsay Tisch were among the dignataries invited to the official opening of the new hall at Meremere.Below: At the end of the official opening of the new Meremere Hall students from Te Kauwhata performed a stirring haka.

Meremere celebrates its new hall

The youth of Meremere are as de-lighted with the new village hall as are their elders. The 150-house village has had to do without a community hall for many years as the old hall had to be torn down. The local primary school has no place for an assem-bly nor did the rugby club have club rooms. So the new hall on the hill above the village and its former power station is changing lives.

The new hall is now open, and has large changing rooms with showers and plenty of space to hold concerts and stage plays. It can accommo-date numerous sports, meetings and provide food from the new four-stove kitchen. Expectations are running high for the new events to be held in the new facility. The local community are setting up a committee to take care of the day-to-day running of the hall.

This is whaT some of The village children had To say:

“So super excited,” said Lexus She-

dae Jay-lee Kingi (7). “I think the new hall will bring cool things to Mere-mere for us kids.”

“The hall will be used for birthdays, celebrating parties and for Christmas. I can’t wait to go right now,” said Van-zdale Becker (7).

“Meremere’s hall is new again. It is so colourful,” said Suzie Kapea (10). “I like this hall because it does not look like the other hall.”

Jordan Chopra (12) said, “The new hall is going to be great”.

Richard Heta (9) said, “Meremere hall is coolest of all because you can play basketball in the hall.”

“The hall is cool for Meremere school,” said Wiremu Ngatai (8).

The new hall is the result of much fundraising by the villagers, and help from Ministry of Social Development, Waikato District Council, Internal Af-fairs with organising, planning, find-ing funding and bringing together all ideas to a workable plan for the new hall.

Awards showcase success for local racing sectorll Last Thursday night saw the annual Pukekohe Park Awards take place at the Counties Racing Club. The event, which was also held in conjunction with the Auckland District Ap-prentice Jockey School awards, recognises the achievements of Franklin’s local jockeys, trainers, track work riders, stablehands, owners and of course, the areas horses for their achievements in the 2014-2015 season.Pukekohe’s Richard Collett, of Collett Racing Stables, took out trainer of the year, which is statistically based on the number of win-

ners had each season. This was Richard’s 29th season schooling at Pukekohe Park and he has managed to train over 600 winners from here. The top award, Pukekohe Park Horse of the Year 2015, went to Showboy who was also the Two Year Old Cat-egory winner. Showboy was trained by Nigel Tiley who also part owns the horse. The gelding by Showcasing had an impressive record of four starts for a win and three placings. The win was a Group Two race – Golden Homes Wakefield Chal-lenge Stakes at Wellington in December last year.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) Pink Caravan, which is purpose-built to travel New Zealand providing education on breast cancer, is ready to begin its tour for 2015, with the help and support of the Subway Road - Bridgestone Tyre Centre in Pukekohe.

The caravan was serviced and fitted with brand new tyres at the centre last week, and will begin a ten week tour from Whangarei to Mosgiel this week, where specialist breast cancer nurses will answer the public’s questions about the disease and show what the real-life signs to watch out for are.

The funky, retro-looking caravan will be in Puke-kohe Town Square on September 15 and Waiuku New World supermarket on September 16.

Support can also be given to the Bridgestone NZ-BCF during the 2015 campaign period, by purchas-ing Pink Caps – pink valve caps that can go on just about anything with tyres. These can be purchased during the month of October at either Bridgestone Select, Bridgestone Tyre Centre or Firestone stores, or online from bridgestonepinkcaps.co.nz

At least 125 high school age students arrived at Mer-cer on Sunday to take part in the annual School Champi-onships, organised this year by Pukekohe’s Motorcycle Club.

Many Franklin schools had entered teams which were placed in a number of

categories and levels of ex-perience. By far the biggest delegation was from Waiuku College, but Onewhero Area School, Glenbrook School, Pukekohe High School and Pukekohe Intermediate also had students participating.

Individual scores are added together and credited to each school and this year the biggest tally belonged to Rosehill College.

On Saturday, Counties Shotokan held a successful martial arts tournament in Pukekohe. Different forms of Kumite and Kata were on display. Above is Luana-Nan Pranatti from Pukekohe proudly displaying the two medals she won for placing third in individual kata and first place in team kata.

On Saturday August 29 the boys won a hard fought battle against a deter-mined St Kentigern’s College team 17-0, to become the 2015 Auckland Second-ary School U60kg 6C-Grade Champi-ons. They then turned up last Saturday to win the Counties Secondary School competition beating Rosehill College and Pukekohe High School. The team didn’t concede any points in their finals. The team have had a fantastic season playing with skill, determination and passion. Special thanks to the coaches Dion Cassidy & Hayden Setchfield .

Not to be outdone, the U69kg team came second in the Auckland Second-ary Schools’ U69kg 5C-Grade competi-tion, being beaten in the last minute by Pakuranga College 27-26.

Determined to put that loss behind them they turned up last Saturday to put on a great display of skilled rugby, beating both Rosehill College and Puke-kohe High School teams to become the 2015 U69kg Counties Secondary School Champions.

Special thanks to the coaches Hamish Pyne & Joe Dawson.

The Awhitu Golf Open day was held at the end of August, which saw a great turn out despite the weather forecast.

Visitors came from quite a distance and while early heavy rain stopped play, there was a random prize draw, with all players winning a prize.

There was a bountiful prize table supplied by Aurora Law of Waiuku and after an early lunch, the rain lightened and players were able to complete a round of nine holes.

ll The Steelers were punished se-verely for fumbling the ball far too of-ten against an on fire Bay of Plenty side, losing 26-37. The Steamers went onto the attack straight away, scoring their first try after two minutes Chase Tiatia crossed the line and Dan Hollinshead converted. Counties quickly gained a penalty but missed the chance to score.

After fifteen minutes BoP took the score to 0-14 as Shahn Eru scored a try. Then a lucky break handed Counties’ Sione Fifita the ball and he ran it all the way to the try line. The conversion of his try was unsuccessful.

Ten minutes later the Steamers add-ed another try to their tally. This time it was a try for Te Aihe Toma. The conver-sion failed. After half an hour Te Rangi Fraser went over the Counties’ try line. A penalty in the 38th minute brought the halftime score to 5-27.

Counties were more aggressive in the second half creating some chances but just kept handing the ball back to the Steamers. In both halves much of the game was played in the BoP half. A pen-alty to BoP took the score to 5-30, but soon after Richard Judd saw his chance to help out his team, a try Jared Page converted, 12-30. The Steamers proved to have the safest hands and 15 minutes from full time Whaimotu Craft-Chemis put his name on the scoreboard.

Richard Judd spotted another chance and took it, taking the score to 17-37. Jared Page made it 19-37, though some joker at the scoreboard gave Counties a score of 129 for a while. Sikeli Nabou and Jared Page managed to close the gap a bit more in the 78th minutes, taking the final score to 26-37.

Counties 26 (S Fifita, S Nabou, R Judd 2 tries: J Page 3 cons) Halftime: 27-5.

llThe Bs did what Counties’ premier team could not: wallop Bay of Plenty.

Counties reigned supreme through-out the game, winning 59-31. The Steel-ers went into the attack from kick-off, Karl Ropati bagging the first try in the first minute and Sione Malia added another in the fifth minute. BoP’s Jeff Thwaite put his team on the board soon after. A penalty by Riley Hohepa took the score to15-7.

The try fest just continued: Louis Ka-piteni in the 20th minute, Sione Malia in the 25th, Epeli Lotawa int he 28th, but no conversions for Riley Hohepa until Liam Daniela went over in the 35th minute. The halftime score was 37-7.

Bay of Plenty showed more spirit in

the second half, though Karl Ropati re-peated his game opener by scoring a try after three minutes. A conversion and a penalty by Riley Hohepa took the score to 47-7 after just six minutes into the second half.

BoP started to show some bite and a fair bit of pushing and shoving near the try line resulted in a BoP try in the 18th minutes of the second spell, which Tim O’Malley converted, 47-14. In the 25th minute of the second half a Desma Li-aina try made it 52-7.

Bay of Plenty scored three more tries, all conversion attempts hitting the up-rights, including one near full-time that took the Steelers by surprise and left them standing around watching. Antonio Lavemai added a final try for Counties, which was converted by Kie-ran Rollinson. The final score was 59-31.

Counties stalwart Joeli Vidiri, who this year under went a kidney transplant, was awarded a Steelers’ memora-bilia jersey for his valued contribution to rugby.

Joeli played 96 games for Counties, 61 for the Blues and two for the ABs, seven for Fiji and scored 110 tries in his career (56 for Counties). He won the national sevens, two Super 12 titles, Commonwealth Games gold medal and was Blues’ player of the year in 1996. He retired from rugby in 2001 suffering from kidney problems and has been receiving dialysis until late May this year, when he had a kidney transplant. In the intervening years Vidiri has coached a number of teams for his Pukekohe club.

Counties pay tribute to Joeli Vidiri

Our client Bromley Park is based at Tuakau. Essentially they are a hatchery; they produce eggs on site for collection and then incubation to hatch day old chicks.

They require several new staff members on site to collect eggs, manage bird health and welfare, keep the sheds hygienic and various other tasks related to the sheds.

This is a seven day a week operation (birds need feeding daily), so different shift options will be discussed on application.

Sadly anyone who has contact with pigs or birds (other than those on site) will not be considered due to health risks to the birds.

No experience is required to take up this career. You must have a good attitude, be reliable (as you are a team member and others rely on you), punctual, fit and able.

If you live in the region why not consider something different. Give Shirley a call on 0272 722 455 to discuss this great opportunity or email [email protected]
