The final day of riding ses-sions on Thursday 8th January had all riders excited, while for some this meant a run through the Olym-pic quality Cross Country course and for others a last few hours of rubbing shoulders with first class coaches and instructors.

For 70 young riders and their hors-es, it has been an experience to re-member as the Pony Club NSW State Camp finished up on Friday 9th January at Sydney International Equestrian Centre.

The 6 days of State Camp this year were all very warm and humid, but nothing stopped the

riders and their horses from making the most of the opportunity to learn from the best and enjoy the great facilities of the Sydney Inter-national Equestrian Centre. This year brought out deter-mination, hard work, and some of the best upcoming young equestrian riders in many years. Former World Young Rider Champion, Sam Lyle coached 15 young rid-ers in the State Camp Eventing teams over the course of the week. At the conclusion of

State Camp, Sam explained what a great time he had with a wonderful group of kids; “There are kids that are really keen, and at reasonably high standards for their ages, so we

can work on some of the more detailed things. Be-

cause you’re working with them across four days, you can start off with something and really progress it

through the week to help them improve their

skills and become better riders”.

“It is one of

the best camps

that I have

ever done!”

9

Advanced Horsemanship rid-ers at State Camp were able to ex-perience being coached a range of disciplines including dressage, showjumping and eventing through-out the 4 days of riding sessions. Advanced Horsemanship rider Olivia Muscat, tells of why she ap-plied for State Camp; “State Pony Club camp is one of the best opportunities in the State to get such good instruction, and they have so many great coaches”.

Former Olympian in the Sydney 2000 Showjumping Equestrian Team, Jamie Coman coached the State Camp Showjump-ing teams. Coman explained what a great opportunity State Camp is for all Pony Club riders; “Seeing riders each year getting better and better… it is one of the best camps that I have ever done”.

The Pony Club Association of NSW would like to thank the coach-

es; Carolyn Earl, Sam Lyle, Jamie Co-man, Jane Frankum, Sarah Venamore, Greg Hogan, Anthony Newham and Phil Logue for their efforts as wonderful coaches for the young pony club riders. Thank you

also to the riders, officials and staff who trav-

elled from around the state for yet another fantastic NSW Pony Club State Camp.

The Pony Club NSW

State Camp is supported by Mitavite official feed partner, major sponsor Global Entries Online, Horseland Dural, Ego Phar-maceuticals, Club Colours Direct and International Animal Health.

To become an accredited Pony Club In-structor in NSW or any state in Australia you will be accredited under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme. This is under the umbrella of the Australian Sports Commission. The Pony Club Association of NSW now operates under this scheme and the NCAS is the only accreditation now available to our instructors to be accredited. The “old PCANSW” certificates can be updated and still hold their place in the system but no new certificates under that system can be obtained. Assessments are organised by the Zones and you should be able to do one in your own zone.

If the numbers are not enough to have one in your zone you can apply to another zone. See the PCANSW calendar for other assess-ments.

PRE ASSESSMENT To begin working towards your Preliminary NCAS certificate it is good to let you Zone Chief Instructor know you are interested in working towards this certificate. The criteria to do your assessment:-

To have done a certain number of hours teaching under supervision (if you do not have any previous ac-creditation) at Pony Club.

To attend a 2 day State Instructors school, these are held in your zone or you can attend one in another zone. (Check the PCA website calen-dar for these NCAS Preliminary In-structors Schools)

Be 18 years of age.

1. The Books: The next step will be to purchase the NCAS Preliminary Log book and The Syllabus and Coaching Notes from the PCANSW Office (A merchandise pur-chase form is on the PCANSW website). You will need to work through the log book and fill in the questions (You can refer to the Coaching Notes to help with the an-swers)

There are a number of les-son plans to be done but it is recommended that you do 2 or 3 each rally day and then teach them at Pony Club. It is much easier and beneficial to do it this way than to just sit and write out all these lesson plans. 2. Mentors: There are practical sec-tions in the Log Book which are to be signed off by a Mentor. There is a list of mentors on the PCANSW website under Coaching then at the bottom of the page “ NCAS Mentors List” You need to have all sections in your Log Book signed by some-one from this list. If they are not listed they are not eligible to sign your book. 3. Booking in: Once your log book is

nearing completion you need to let you ZCI know you are ready to book in for an assessment. If an assessment is already booked for your zone or another zone put you name down with the co ordina-tor so you can be included.

You will need to send your Log Book to the Zone Assessment Co-ordinator to be sent

into the PCA NSW Office at least four weeks prior to your Assessment date.

FOR THE ASSESSMENT You will need to organise and supply at

least one capable demonstration rider under the age of 25

and are current financial members of PCA NSW.

For preliminary as-sessments they need to be a minimum of a D, D*Certificate standard. If you are unable to do this you must contact your Zone

Assessment Co-ordinator no less

than three weeks be-fore your assessment

day so they can then try to organise another horse and

rider.

You should receive your assess-ment candidates notes, three lists of tasks and the assessment time-table from your Assessment Co-ordinator at least two weeks be-fore the Assessment. You choose (3) tasks to teach on the day. One Flat riding task, One Jumping task, One Games task. The Assessor will also ask you to do a thorough Gear Check with explana-tion on safety of the gear and correct fit.

This information has been written

by one of the

Associations State Coaches, as a

guide to Pony Club Instructors.

If you are interested in obtaining

more resources, simply visit our

Online Store.

The Assessor will also ask you to do a thorough Gear

Check with expla-nation on safety of the gear and

correct fit.

15

THE ASSESSMENT DAY: The following will be provided at

the venue for you. Dressage letters, arena, jumps and games equipment.

Usually witches hats are provided but check with the assessment coordinator about this. You will need to bring your own

props for your task. Eg. White Board or something you wish to use in our lesson other than the above mentioned equipment.

You will need to be there a bit be-fore the starting time and be in attendance all day.

You need to be neat, clean and dressed in long pants, boots or solid shoes, collared shirt with sleeves (Not sleeveless) and prefer-ably a hat. (This is assessed)

You will be allocated a number on the timetable and you will follow

those times. Have the equipment for your lesson set up before you allocated time so you are ready to start on time.

You will be required to teach a group of three riders for your teaching tasks. One rider for your gear check task. It is mandatory that you have this many riders.

Check with your Co-ordinator if a canteen is provided or you need to supply your own food and drink.

After all the candidates have been assessed you will meet with the assessors to find out your results.

If you are successful you will need to fill out the relevant paperwork supplied by the assessors.

AFTER THE ASSESSMENT: Within three weeks you will re-

ceive your certificate from PCANSW.

Your NCAS certificate is current for 4 years. In that time you need to do some updating ie. Attend a 2 day instructors school, teach at Pony Club etc.

The update sheet is able to be downloaded off the PCANSW web-site.

Keep track of the expiry date and send in the update sheet at the time of expiry not before.

You should receive notify- cation via your ZCI when it is due, but it is ultimately your responsibility. PCANSW pay your registration to

the Australian Sports Commission every four years.

As competitors in equestrian events, one of the most exciting things after a competition is seek-ing out any professional photographs taken of you and your horse in action. But remembering the name or website of the photographer, or if there even was a photographer at the event are the common reasons for missing out on great photos to mark your achievements. There’s now a new way for Pony Clubs to safely and securely share and sell photos from their events online! GeoSnapShot.com is an online ser-vice that can either provide a professional pho-tographer for your event, OR use a parent, friend or pony club volunteer to take the photos, and all photographs are uploaded onto the one webpage for viewing and purchasing. GeoSnapShot.com offers free registration and uploading of photos, and pony clubs can choose to share their photos with participants free of charge, or generate additional funds for their club by selling the images. Pony Club NSW recently used GeoSnapShot for our 2015 State Camp held in January.

How does GeoSnapShot work? The club’s own designated photographers

(Mums & Dads, friends, or local hobbyist photographers) take photos at the Pony Club events and upload them to GeoSnap-Shot.

Parents safely and easily view photos from all the photographers at GeoSnapShot.com through password-protected (optional) al-bums. Photos are downloaded instantly as digital files.

There is no cost for this service and there-fore no risk.

Fundraise for your club by selling photos You set the price of your photos. An initial

default price of $8.95 per photo is recom-mended, but the decision is yours.

70% of the revenue goes to the photographer who can then donate back to the club if they like.

Payment of photos is managed securely through the GeoSnapShot website and pay-ment is accepted via credit card, bank transfer or PayPal.

Would you like to see a demo? We’ve set up an example event using demo pho-tos so you can see how it all works. Simply go to:

www.GeoSnapShot.com/e/your-school The password is: password

The demo event photos are free but you can set any price you choose. Let’s get started Getting started is simple:

Ask your photographers to register at www.GeoSnapShot.com and upload their photos from the event.

If you require GeoSnapShot photographer at your event simply add your event to our calendar using our online booking form at www.GeoSnapShot.com/events

You can even upload photos form events that have already taken place!

If I had 3 wishes I would like to: Ride at the Olympics one day, Ride all day and not go to school and Build a nice stable for my pony.

November Horseland Club of the Month, Corindi Pony Club, Zone 9

Corindi Pony Club is in Zone 9 and meets once a month

at the Corindi Pony Club grounds at Corindi Beach. The

club has been running since 1992 (22) years and current-

ly has approximately 15 riding members ranging in age

from 7 to 17 and 14 non-riding members who are our

valued volunteers.

The club offers instruction in the following disciplines

Dressage/Flat Work, Jumping, Sporting, & Polocross as

well as lessons in proper horse care and safety. A typical

rally day involves Troup Drill, Flat Work, Jumping, and

Sporting after lunch. Rally Days are divided into 45 mi-

nute ‘lesson’ periods and the riders are placed in groups according to experience

and ability. Each Group is rotated through each discipline. Other fundraising or

social events run at Corindi Pony club including Raffles (supported by the local Ho-

tel), Fundraising Chocolate Sales, & Community Grant Applications.

The best thing about being a member of Corindi Pony Club is that it’s a small club,

with fantastic support and help from the parents involved. Many of the families

are related, and at one stage there were 3 generations of the one family as mem-

bers. This small Pony Club is one of the pillars of the community.

December Horseland Club of the Month, Robertson Pony Club, Zone 10

Robertson Pony Club, Zone 10, meets every first and third Sunday at Robertson

Showgrounds. The club has been running for 26 years and currently has approxi-

mately 10 riding members ranging in age from 4 to 24 and several non-riding

members who are our valued volun-

teers.

The club offers instruction in the fol-

lowing disciplines; showjumping,

sporting, dressage, showriding and

mounted games as well as lessons in

proper horse care and safety. A typi-

cal rally day involves a quick gear

check, fun warm up for the riders,

ground work warm up for the horses,

then we often split into groups to do activities such as sporting races, dressage,

flat work, trot poles, or jumping, before a cool down. Other fundraising, or social

events run at Robertson Pony club include pony club dinners and our Annual

Christmas Party Rally Day.

The best thing about being a member of Robertson Pony Club is watching the

small club grow, and the kids having a great time with their ponies.
