Howwe doit...Case study - Derby City Hospital

Cheery seagulls, giant starfish, seahorses, dolphins and

colourful circular waves are among the seaside themed

designs inset into the flooring at the new emergency

department for children at the Derby City General Hospital.

Colourful murals and pieces of artwork depicting sunny

seaside holiday scenes further introduce an element of fun

and distraction to the unit that was at the heart of the

project.

This was led by Jane Montague, interior designer from the

Derby based architectural practice, Matthew Montague

Architects, who were commissioned by Derby Hospitals

NHS Foundation Trust to enhance the newly-built children’s

emergency department.

Working with Jane and her design team, a computerised

flooring design was created by the Polyflor Design Service to

interpret the shapes and dimensions of every element of the

designs, transforming them into a precise flooring ‘jigsaw’

for ease of installation.

Shades from Polyflor XL PU and Mystique PUR were

specified for this installation. Both ranges offer attractive

colourways and meet the strict performance requirements

demanded by today’s modern healthcare facilities.


We aimed to make the visiting experience more relaxed and friendly, soafter workingalongside a team from the hospital, focus groups were held with teenagers and youngerchildren to ascertain their views and ideas.

This resulted in a seaside theme using uplifting pastel colours and the colour choices availablefrom Polyflor provided a perfect complement to the contemporary theme used throughoutthe whole scheme.

Howwe doit...You imagine it, we’ll deliver it

1) We can work from almost anything. If you already

have an idea of the design you want, send it to

us. We can accept anything from a sketch on a

notepad, to a fully dimensioned CAD drawing.

Ideally we would prefer a jpeg type image but we

can handle most file formats.

2) We use up to the minute CAD software together

with a sophisticated graphics package. When a

design is ordered, we can create a detailed

flooring design ready for approval or amendment.

3) Next, we create a cutting program for your

design. Polyflor use high precision waterjet

cutting machines to cut your designs. Using

custom built software, our cutting tables cut to

an accuracy of +/- 0.1mm, using water pressure

of up to 40,000 psi. Each colour which makes up

a design is cut individually, like pieces of a jigsaw.


We can accept most graphics file formatstypically in use. The better the quality ofdrawing supplied, the more accurately wecan re-create your design. If you want tosend us a CAD drawing, we prefer DXF orAutocad DWG file formats.

Howwe doit...Attention to detail with a hands-on approach

Craftsmanship is all about care and attention and we

acknowledge this throughout the creative process,

from initial drawing stage through to delivery to site.

As the design is cut, the various parts of the ‘jigsaw’

are checked and carefully aligned. A special surface

tape is applied to hold the design together before

packing and delivery. A large design may come in

several sections. For bigger designs we label all

parts and include drawings to make assembly as

simple as possible.

Delivery

We have a distribution network across the UK and

overseas and can deliver to site if needed. The

designs are packaged securely and will get there in

safe hands.

Recycling

Any off-cuts that can not be used for other cutting

jobs are collected and recycled on site.
