Dear Parents, Our middle school students are about to begin a new and exciting investigative ge- nealogy project. As the kickoff event, our middle school students traveled to the Tene- ment Museum in the Lower East Side. At the museum, they were able to see first-hand how our ancestors, who came from Eastern Eu- rope, lived when they arrived in New York. The students were amazed to learn how many family members lived together in one tiny apartment with no running water, several children piled together sleeping in one bed, and yes, no bathroom. Even with all the hardships our ancestors endured, they kept Shabbat, working on Sunday so they would not lose their jobs. Their hourly wages, which ranged anywhere from 7 to 10 cents per hour, was always given to help their fam- ily. As we traveled together through “time” from an apartment in 1897 to one in 1911, we learned how life had improved for the immigrants. It was heartwarming to see that now an apartment had running water, a stove, and a bathroom. In every apartment there were constant reminders of keeping a Jewish home – the mezuzah on the doorpost, the Shabbat candlesticks on the mantle, and the challah ready for their Shabbat meal. Our students’ questions and comments reflected their deep understanding and commitment to Judaism. As Atara Epstein remarked, “This trip brought our history to life.” As this unit unfolds, our students will have the golden opportunity to learn about his or her own family history. We will also have an in-depth look at the once vibrant Jewish way of life in Camden, New Jersey, approximately 100 years ago. We hope the knowledge our students will gain from this project, will create an indelible impression upon their lives. Mrs. Roth Recommends…The Great Friday Cleanup By Sashi Fridman

This adorable story, perfect for preschool children, tells the hilarious adventures of a mom clean-ing the house before Shabbos. Using her trusty vacuum cleaner, mom literally cleans and vacu-ums everything in the house. Absolutely nothing is spared, from crumbs, pens, pots and pans, to the couch and coffee table! Now, that the house is clean, mom is ready to prepare Shabbos dinner. But, where’s her stove, mixer and kitchen utensils? You guessed it – everything was in the vacuum cleaner which was just about to explode! Everything popped out of the vacuum, even a long –lost Shabbos guest! As Shabbos was about to begin, right in the middle of the mess, the family celebrated Shabbos in an unusual style, sitting right on the living room floor. This adventure has taught the family a valuable lesson. Now, they keep their belongings better organized and Dad keeps everything nailed down, just to be safe and secure! The illustrations simply pop off the page done in magnificent primary colors. What a wonderful way to begin Shabbos with your children!

Learning about the human body is a highlight in our fourth grade science curricu-lum. We have learned that the heart is the largest muscle in our body which allows blood to flow through our veins and arteries. We con-structed a diagram showing the organs of the digestive system. We conducted a tasty experiment as we experienced food going down our esophagus, as we munched on crackers and cookies.

The students are anxious to tackle chal-lenging math problems as they strive to solve them working with a partner. Together, they strategize to find the best methods that will

solve these higher level critical thinking problems. The students share with their classmates how they arrived at their solution. Frac-tions, range, median, mode, and mean are just some of the concepts

that the students are focusing on in class. Now, have you even thought of Humpty

Dumpty sitting on something besides a wall or perhaps Humpty Dumpty not having a great fall? The fourth graders were asked to use their imaginations and revise this familiar nursery rhyme into a humorous story for all to read. They were so excited to read their creative masterpieces to their friends during “Afternoon Meet-ing.” Fourth grade is always eager to learn throughout the day!

Fourth grade has begun Navi with a bang! After most of the students got perfect scores on our Eretz C’naan map quiz, we baked Eretz C’naan cookies. We used blue dough for the river and lakes, green dough for the land, and yellow for the dessert area. It is important for us to know the map and land forms of Eretz C’naan before we learn about the conquering of Eretz C’naan by Yehoshua and the Jewish nation. Upon the occasion of learning Parshat Beshalach in Parshat Ha-shavuah, the 4th grade students watched an amazing movie about scuba divers who dis-covered what may have been the remains of the Egyptian chariots on the floor of the Yam
