CAPA REPORT- Battle of the Bands

Year 8 have been rocking their way through Music lessons this year, preparing for the inaugural ‘Battle of the Bands’, which was held on Tuesday 12 June. Each Year 8 student has been actively engaged in a differentiated learning program of team building, developing skills on instruments and Project Based Learning. Students have formed small ensembles within their classes and worked on rock songs. Each group having a combination of vocals, guitar, electric bass, keyboard and drum kit. Each individual student was responsible for learning their own part on an instrument of choice and working as a team to polish a song to a performance standard. At the beginning of the year, the thought of performing at the ‘Battle of the Bands’ was overwhelming for all students. CAPA staff were so proud to see 11 items featuring over 50 students at the ‘Battle of the Bands’ performance.

This project has been made even more successful with the addition of ‘Instructional Leadership Lessons’. This is a new initiative at Picnic Point High School whereby our Principal and Deputy Principals team teach with a staff member and a nominated class for a five week block to provide greater learning outcomes for students. Mr Millican has worked with Mr Bleyerveen and the 8E Music class and Mrs Gourlay and the 8O Music class. The success of the ‘Instructional Leadership Program’ in Year 8 Music lessons is evident through the high level of student engagement and a strong focus on individual learning intentions.

TERM 2 REWARDS DAY

Congratulations to all of the students who were invited to and attended Rewards Day. Your achievements should always be celebrated and it was a delight to celebrate with you as we settled into the Drama Room with our snacks to take in a cinema experience. Eddie the Eagle was a fantastic film that inspired all of us, much like you, to strive to be the best at whatever it is we set our minds and hearts to. Our Hugh Jackman was every bit as amazing as our rewards students; funny, talented and delivering a strong performance. Well done, Hugh.

When students were asked if they enjoyed their time, students commented with: “Popcorn! Popcorn! Popcorn!”, “I thought it was a great movie” and “Let’s do it again”. We encourage all students to continue working above and beyond so they too can join us for a magical afternoon at the end of Term 3. Thank you to all of

the staff who were involved in the organization and with the supervision on the day. It could not have happened without you. Also, a big thank you to the rewards students who were gracious and polite participants on the day. Ms Tracey MacDonald - Assistant Year Advisor

Mind Marathon—Gifted and Talented Program

On Friday 27th July, six students from 8E went on an excursion to East Hills Boys to take part in the Mind Marathon. This was a trivia competition where our students had the opportunity to compete against many schools across Sydney. 8E had a great time and they worked as a team in order to complete all of the challenges. The students also enjoyed a great meal from Subway. Everyone had a fantastic time! Ms Hannah Deep - Social Sciences Teacher

Peter Panagakis Yr 10

Congratulations to Peter Panagakis of Year 10, who was recently selected in the NSW U16’s Second Division Team for football (soccer). To be selected for a NSW Combined High Schools Team is an amazing achievement and means that Peter is having an opportunity to play at the highest level in school football, with the team finishing their recent competition at the top of their pool. Peter is a disciplined, hard-working and respectful student who has been an integral member of the Open Boys Soccer Team at Picnic Point High School for many years. We wish him all the best for his future footballing career. Congratulations again Peter.

Seth Trindall visits Parliament

Seth Trindall of Year 8 had the opportunity to emcee at the 2018 ‘Yarn Up’ Showcase, held at NSW Parliament House on Friday 27 July 2018.

Yarn Up is a public speaking program that is specifically designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across the Metropolitan South and Regional South operational directorates.

The ‘Yarn Up’ Showcase is an opportunity for the students to share their speeches with their peers, families, school staff and guests, highlighting a topic that is important to them.

Seth represented Picnic Point High School with great maturity and respect. He is to be congratulated on his wonderful achievement.

Mr Montague - Aboriginal Education Coordinator
