Tetney and Tetney Lock Village Voice - Summer 2011
Hello to you all
This is Tetney &Tetney Lock Village Voice’s third issue of our newsletter, in our Spring issue we
have had a lot of positive response from it, to our amazement the sell you stuff items went with-
in the first day of distribution. We have now decided that the Sell your stuff will now be FREE to
any resident of Tetney for one quarter.
To avoid any confusion, this newsletter has been solely produced by the Tetney Steering Com-
mittee and none of this was funded by the Parish Council.
Also if you are on the Internet please don't forget to visit the Parish Council Website that has
information about what is happening in the village and other essential information such as re-
fuse collection, history of Tetney and much more. http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Tetney
Or you can Google– Tetney Parish Council and click on the top page.
Dominic Robinson
Tetney Parish Councillor/ Tetney Steering Committee / Tetney Village Hall Committee
Hello Residents of Tetney & Tetney Lock,
This being the third edition of the Village Voice, it is so pleasing to see it supported by so many advertisers, both locally and beyond the environs of Tetney. It has become a most interesting magazine with lots of information about the community we live in and care for. Again I congratulate the Tetney Steering Committee for their hard work and energy in producing the Village Voice.
The recent Car Boot Sale organized by the Tetney Steering Group and the Tetney Pre-School Group was the first step to raise funds for some new sports facilities so badly needed in the village. This, one hopes, will complement the existing facilities at the Village Hall. To address the shortage of facilities, especially for younger members of the community, I have arranged sports coaching in the summer months at the Village Hall playing field. I have also arranged for the popular Funk Bus to visit Tetney during the school holidays. I do hope the younger members of our community will take ad-vantage of this. Anyone interested in the sports coaching should get in touch with me at [email protected]
The Funk Bus visits to Tetney will be posted up on the Tetney Parish Council website at www.parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Tetney
I do hope everyone who reads the Village Voice will get as much enjoyment as I in see-ing how this helps bring the community together.

Gardening Tips– Summer
Watering Watering is a chore that needs to be carried out throughout the summer season,
but remember to use water wisely and, rather than drenching your entire garden
regularly, concentrate your efforts on the following:
Plants growing in pots, containers and hanging baskets as these can dry out
very quickly.
Newly planted trees and shrubs as these are very vulnerable to drought
stress.
Any freshly sown or newly planted parts of your garden.
Herbaceous perennials which can suffer during sustained dry spells.
In the kitchen garden leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach should
never be allowed to dry out.
The Vegetable Garden Pinch outside shoots on tomatoes and en-
joy harvesting and eating the first early
potatoes. Lettuce, radishes and other salad
crops should also be ready now - don't for-
get to make repeat sowings at two or three
week intervals so that you can enjoy these
crops all summer long. In the vegetable
garden harvest your vegetables as soon as
they are ready to eat - that way you will
enjoy them at their peak of sweetness and
flavour. Harvest courgettes and other con-
tinuous producers regularly to encourage
more fruits to develop.
The Ornamental Garden Plant out tender summer bedding
plants and position summer con-
tainers and hanging baskets out-
side. Stake or support plants
before it is too using canes and
plastic coated wire around the
plants. Many spring flowering
shrubs will benefit from pruning
in early summer as this will give
them time to make the new
growth necessary for next year's
flowers before the end of the
season.
Garden ponds Clear algae and
blanket weed
from your garden
pond and keep it
topped up - pref-
erably with rain-
water.
The Ornamental Garden
Try to make the time to deadhead your bedding and re-
peat flowering plants to keep them producing blooms
over a long period. This is a pleasant task for a summer's
evening so get into the habit of taking a stroll around
your garden at the end of the day and snipping or pinch-
ing off the spent blooms. If you do it little and often it
really isn't a lot of trouble.

Lawns If you didn't get around to feeding your lawn in the spring, you can still apply
a fast acting lawn feed now. Lawns will need mowing at least once a week by

House plants It should now be warm enough for your house and conservatory plants to
come out into the garden for a summer holiday which they will really appreci-
ate.

Humber Refinery and Tetney Tank Farm
The Humber Refinery is located on a 480acre site and was built in 1969 every
day the refinery processes over 230,000 barrels of crude oil and other feed-
stock's. The crude oil arrives in marine tankers which offload their cargo at the
Tetney monobuoy in the Humber estuary. From here the oil is pumped by un-
dersea pipeline to the tank storage at Tetney oil terminal, before again being
piped underground to the Refinery for processing. Every year 90 tankers, each
carrying up to 130,000 tonnes of crude, unload at the Tetney monobouy the first
to be installed in British waters. The monobouy is a large floating drum-shaped
structure and is moored to the sea bed by 8 chains. The discharging process
from a tanker normally takes 24 hours. The Humber Refinery produces 14 mil-
lions litres of petrol a day, enough for a family car averaging 11kilometrses per
litre (35m per gallon) to drive 150 million kilometres, or two trips to the moon
and back!!

The Wind Turbine Update- Louth Canal, Near Tetney
North Thoresby 1940’s Events Group
North Thoresby 1940’s Event Group & Lincolnshire Wolds
Railway including Car Boot Sale
Partnerships for Renewables (PfR) is proposing a three turbine wind energy develop-
ment on and around Environment Agency-owned land at Louth Canal. PfR has now
completed a number of environmental and technical studies on the site which, along
with consultation with the community, has led to them reducing the turbine numbers
from four (in the original layout) to three. They believe the land is suitable for three
turbines which could generate around 16 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green electricity
every year - enough to power the equivalent of 3,600 homes*. There is a community
benefit fund associated with this project, which with the new three turbine layout would
equal £18,750 per year for the life of the project, if it is built. This fund will be managed
by local people and spent as the community sees fit. To share news on the project
PfR will be holding a public exhibition on Wednesday, July 27 from 3pm to 7pm at Tet-
ney Village Hall. There will be to-scale photomontages on display, using computer-
generated images to show what the turbines would look like in the landscape from a
variety of viewpoints. A map of the latest turbine layout will also be available.
All members of the community are invited and any views, questions or feedback are
welcomed by the project team.

Tetney Primary School – Community Governor Vacancy
Due to imminent retirements, Tetney Primary School has 2 vacancies for Community Governors to join our Governing Body. Anyone interested in becoming a school gover-nor is encouraged to contact the Chair of Governors for an informal discussion.
Why do Schools Need Governors?
School governors are necessary to:
Ensure the school is run in a way which reflects the needs and wishes of the local community.
Support, promote and protect the interests of the school, its pupils and staff. Provide a visible form of accountability.
Community governors represent community interests and enable the school and the local community to work cooperatively.
What do School Governors do?
School governors come from a wide range of backgrounds. They are not expected to be experts in educational matters; that is the responsibility of the head teacher and teaching staff. The governing body takes a strategic overview of the issues relating to the school and sets a broad framework within which the head teacher can operate. The work of the governor is concerned with the general oversight of the conduct of the school, with the head teacher responsible for the internal organisation and manage-ment control of the school.
The school governor is expected to:
Promote the school within the local community. Take an interest in school activities. Work as a member of the governing body for the best interests of the school. Attend the regular meetings of the governing body. Serve on committees which deal with the governing body’s legal obligations. Become familiar with general educational issues and developments. Be able to commit time to the duties and responsibilities of a governor.
Interested?
If you are interested in representing the local community as a school governor, or would like to find out more, please contact one of the following:
Chair of Governors - Mr Colin Childs - 01472 811734 Clerk to Governors - Mrs Helen Butterfield - 01472 812074

Tetney Primary School
Days of learning, filled with fun
This term the topic has been ‘Come Dine With Me’. We kicked this off with a week of food tasting from around the world. The children tried food from Greece, France, Italy and Mexico. This is being followed up with visits to a local supermarket to learn about how food is made and a trip to Doddington Hall, to learn about food in Tudor times.
We celebrated the royal wedding, with our own wedding at the Methodist Chapel. The children all dressed in their finery to see two of their school mates get married. We followed this with a wedding breakfast back at school. A great day was had and many thanks go to those at the chapel who helped us with our special day.
Events coming up…
CHINA WEEK AND OPEN AFTERNOON
Beginning on Monday 11th July, we are having China week, where the children will be taking part in lots of activities about China. The week will end with an open after-noon on Friday 15th July. We are opening our doors to anyone from the village who would like to come and have a look around our school. We are part of the communi-ty and would love to welcome you to see what we are all about.
