Point of View

Page 22: The Plot

Third Person Ominiscient The short story “Story of an Hour”

was written in the point of view of third person omniscient. The story is seen through the eyes of a spectator that knows all of the people. The story uses the names of the characters and words like she, her, he and they.

Page 23: The Plot

Third Person Omniscient

Reading the story through all knowing point of view, lets you understand the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard and the Antagonist, her sister Josephine, in a more in depth way. You get to understand what they are feeling and read what they are saying by just watching them.

Page 24: The Plot

Another point of view

If The Story of an Hour would have been written in a different point of view such as first person through the eyes of Louise or Josephine, you would understand that one character in great detail and the others through their eyes.

Literary Devices

Page 26: The Plot

Simile

PG. 202

“She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will- as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been.”

PG.203

“There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of victory.”

Page 27: The Plot

Metaphore

PG.202

“She was drinking in a very elixir of life though that open window.”

PG. 201-202

“She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dream.”

Page 28: The Plot

Imagery

“She could see in the open square before her house the tops of the trees that were all a quiver with the new spring of life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which someone was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.”

Echo Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away”

In this song the main character is happy that her father is dead in a tornado because of what an awful man he was, much like how Mrs. Mallard was happy that her husband was dead.
