Each of the dishes was delicious. The fake fi sh that was folded into the chalupa shell was made from unripened jackfruit (native to Southeast Asia and the na-tional fruit of Indonesia), which is used for savory dishes before it ripens and becomes sweet. The chalupa was slathered liberally with owner Heidi VanPelt-Belle’s proprietary cashew cheese, a spicy neon-orange concoction that looks like a cross between Velveeta and fi nger paint but tastes very good. The fruit looked and tasted stunningly fi shy – in the right way. The rice-mushroom blend used for the meatless tostada also looked and tasted like the real thing.

Let’s say you’re toying with the idea of ordering a crepe or pan-fried noodles or a fi let. That’s merely the fi rst step. Do you want that steak served Thai style? Italiano? Cajun? Caribbean? There are eight internationally inspired possibili-ties, and they all sound pretty tasty. Merker knows his beef, and the center-cut fi let was very good. Then again, one of my favorite dinners at Nica’s requires no decision making. Instead of choosing a mix-and-match entrée, I ordered the mac and cheese and my favorite starter on the menu, a trio of sliders. One small sandwich is Korean-style barbecued pulled pork, another Thai-spiced chicken, and the third jerk steak.

Seasons 52 Fresh | Grill340 Ward Parkway816-531-0052
e Seasons 52 dessert concept is bril-liant. e little shot glasses o ered as na-les here are lled with a variety of pretty, layered concoctions: some with a creamy mousse or so cheesecake, perhaps with bits of carrot cake, or — in the case of the Rocky Road version — miniature marsh-mallows. ey go fast, but they’re e ective (and less than 275 calories) at staving o an aggressive sweet tooth. We tasted the mocha macchiato, the raspberry-cheese-cake creation, the chocolate-peanut-but-ter mousse, and a couple of others before putting down our spoons and declaring ourselves comfortably full.-- Charles Ferruzza
Gram & Dun600 Ward Parkway816-389-2900
As at this restaurant’s sister venue, Urban Table in Prairie Village, the bill ar-rives in a vintage book instead of on a tip tray. Don’t expect a great work of literature, mind you, but there’s wit in some of these ea-market hardbacks. One of my checks came presented inside Touched With Fire, by the never-to-be-forgotten John Tebbel. I also got a look at a slim 1950 guidebook called Living With Teeners, by Grace Sloan Overton. e “tip book” is a delightful eccentricity of this stylish, attractive new res-taurant. It calls itself, as a kind of subtitle, a “gastropub.” A gastropub serves food and booze, but a pub this ain’t. is L-shaped restaurant (once home to Parkway 600 Grill and Baja 600) has been gutted and redone for maximum luxe dazzle, with a chandelier dripping crystals in the building’s dome room and a richly stocked bar. e walls are a cool gray, and the oor is made of dark, wide planks. Calling it a pub is sort of like calling actress Helen Mirren a broad.I found a satisfyingly sharp taste in Gram & Dun’s ver-sion of barbecue: an over-sized cornmeal bun heaped with tender smoked beef, slices of hot link sausage and pulled pork in a distinctively ery sauce. It’s a really rst-rate sandwich, as is the sassy spin on a roadhouse favorite, a sloppy-Joe-style sandwich made with ground wild boar and a dollop of Carolina slaw.-- Charles Ferruzza

Fiesta Azteca705 Southeast Melody LaneLee’s Summit816-524-1290
Andres Orozco has moved his charming little Raytown cantina, Fiesta Az-teca, to a bigger, more ambitious location in Lee’s Summit, where the food remains alluringly good. I still love the decadently rich creations that Orozco introduced me to the rst time around: grilled chicken and shrimp draped in a silky poblano cream sauce, succulent pork carnitas that arrive slightly crispy on the exterior and gorgeously moist and meaty inside. at dazzling, jade-green salsa verde ladled over diced pork and onions. One night’s dinner special: pork chops in a spicy — but not too ery — chi-potle cream sauce. It was truly transporting: two moist, fork-tender pork
chops blanketed in a shiny glaze of smoked chipotle peppers that have been sautéed with mushrooms, on-ions and green peppers and nished o with a little butter and cream. e provocative sauce tickles the tongue rather than scorching it.
—Charles Ferruzza
Martin City Brewing Company500 East 135th Street816-268-2222
Who knew that Martin City (the hamlet annexed by Kansas City in 1963) was so hungry for a Cheers-like bar and café? e owners of Martin City Brewing Company did. For most of the 20th century, this building was the Martin City Pub, a saloon owned and operated by the creator of the iconic Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse and R.C.’s Restaurant & Lounge, the best-known res-taurants in south Kansas City for decades. e plan for this updated brew-ery-restaurant was always to serve upscale pub fare. It’s working. ere’s a truly outstanding macaroni and cheese (side dish or full-sized), and the decent grilled cheese is made with sourdough bread and layered with molten provolone, white cheddar, smoked gouda and gruyere. e nachos come laden with black beans and a blanket of melted cheddar. And the bread-and-butter dishes are the basic bar classics: a great burger; and a rst-rate Reuben, made with chunks of tender, slow-roasted corned beef, house-made sauerkraut and Parker’s own ou-sand Island dressing. e brassy house-made ketchup has become so popular that Moore has arranged to bottle it and sell it to local stores. I’d buy a bottle.

A hunk of grilled Alaskan salmon comes smothered in a sexy cream sauce laden with bits of crabmeat and lobster. A satiny shrimp étou ée, perhaps the most handsome presentation of this Louisiana dish I’ve ever seen, is equally superb. But the most scrumptious o ering that night was a he y and succulent slab of beef, beautifully grilled and glazed with a sultry, peppery cognac sauce. e dish was so addictive that I hesitated before sharing even a bite with my dining companions. When the dinner plates were cleared away, co-owner DeDe Shields appeared in her chef ’s jacket. She proudly refers to herself as “a businesswoman who just loves to cook.” She’s a rst-rate raconteur, telling the story of renovating the old house that’s home to her restaurant, dishing about her neigh-bors and recalling — in hilarious and ribald detail — her former life in St. Joseph. It’s her house, and she’s the best hostess.

If you believe, as I do, that dining out is as much a theatrical experience as a culinary one, you’ll agree that the nine-month-old Latin Bistro and Culi-nary Center is a one-man show. e star? Tito Le Chef.Chef Tito’s menu includes no Tex-Mex dishes. No crispy tacos, no Cheddar cheese. He prepares three di erent versions of a chile relleno, but the most popular is his roasted poblano served en nogada: stu ed with sauteed pork blended with dried fruits. It’s divinely sweet, which is ideal if you crave a hint of sugar with your ery peppers, along with pine nuts and a smooth, creamy pecan sauce.
I was even more impressed with his tender lamb chops, slathered with a gorgeous, sup-ple concoction of tomato, onion and head-clearing epazote touched o with a hint of cream. And then there’s Tito’s slow-roasted marinated pork, conchinita pibil, a visually beautiful, almost excessively delicious way to eat pig. e marinated meat is wrapped in a big, shiny, green banana leaf, carefully folded and roasted for more than eight hours until the meat is both tender and just barely crispy. I prefer mine plain – unless I’m in the mood for Tito’s deceptively kicky chipotle cream sauce.

Carnivores really score here. e six en-trées now on the menu include outstand-ing braised short ribs — some of the best I’ve tasted — in an ancho chile broth. e beef-tongue tacos are extremely tender and really rich.

e plates here are as beautifully composed as a garden: a foie gras terrine, creamy as cake frosting, is positioned on a white plate with a Wassily Kan-dinsky-like arrangement of roasted beets, sliced almonds, a streak of bacon honey, and a jumble of brioche crostini. And there may be no soup in Kansas City that matches the Zen-like composition of Story’s English pea soup. It’s a glorious, brothy (not creamy) concoction of vegetable stock (a base of sim-mered pea pods), chopped green peas, carrots, onion, potatoes and garlic that becomes a sexy jade-green with the addition of a subtle tarragon salsa verde. It’s accessorized with two pork meatballs or, for vegetarian diners, two fried rice arancini balls. e Paci c halibut was delectably moist and drizzled with a smooth lobster butter, and the rainbow trout was delicate and nearly perfect, with an evanes-cent crispness complemented by a splash of lemon-jalapeño vinaigrette and mashed potatoes.
