Working Bee A huge thank you to the 20 parents and staff who turned up here on Sunday to do the jobs on our working bee list. It was wonderful to walk in this morning and see the school looking so great. A great effort THANK YOU! Raffle Tickets - This afternoon raffle tickets are being sent home for the Mitchell BBQ wood raffle. We encourage you to buy some tickets. An early start to wood for next winter would be a handy win. These need to be returned by Friday so the raffle can be drawn on Saturday. Prep Transition Today was the first day of our Prep 2016 transition program and we were pleased to welcome 15 new students. There will be a further three transi- tion sessions and a parent information session before the end of the term. Please check the website for details. Prep Sleepover The Prep sleepover is scheduled for Thursday 12th November. Further details will be sent to families shortly. Our Good News Story We have recently looked intensely at the data of the chil- dren’s results from the mid year reports and I am delighted to report the following. 87% of our children have made 6 months progress in the first six months of this year in English and 90% of them have made the same progress in Maths. A very pleasing result. Of those who didn’t make this progress, this is due to a number of factors. These include illness, learning difficulties, changed family circumstance and poor attend- ance. Of these, poor attendance is most worrying. Parents have a choice to prevent attendance being a barrier to progress in learning and I encourage EVERY family to make sure their children are at school for the maximum possible time. Planning for 2016 Planning for 2016 is still continuing. Our grade structures are not yet determined as we still need to do some number juggling. However, teachers will remain in the classes where they are currently teaching. As soon as decisions are made, we will inform you. Outstanding Fees There are still families with outstanding fees from the begin- ning of the year. Please make sure that you settled these accounts as soon as possi- ble. Prep Transition Today Big welcome to the Kinder children who came to visit for their first transition to- day.

MITCHELL HOUSE FUNDRAISING BBQ

We are in desperate need of assistance from all Mitchell families, to run the BBQ this Saturday 24th October 2015. If you could please spare an hour of your time could you please place your name on the sheet located at the office. If you are unable to assist on the day you could always bake a yummy cake, a batch of biscuits or make a slice for the stall on the day. Just drop your produce at school on Friday afternoon or at the stall on Sat-urday morning. We really do need as much help as possible to ensure that we are competitive or even beat both Barker and Lang! Any promotion that you can give this fundraising event within your social network would be greatly appreciated also, as the more people that support our BBQ, the more money we raise, which bene-fits all Harcourt Valley students and that’s the purpose of our fundraising efforts. If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas please call, text or email Lynda Wilson 0422 689 554 or Jaynee

HUGE Thank you to all the families that contribut-

ed to the Working Bee on the weekend! It was a

terrific amount of work that was undertaken, and

the school is looking so much better because of it!

There are two more sections that need a lit-

tle bit of extra attention if anyone has some

spare time over the next couple of weeks!

The triangle garden between the shed and the play-

ground and the garden near the teacher carpark are

both in need of some serious weeding!

BIG THANKYOU AGAIN!!

DADS AND SPORT

Most dads are hard-wired to want their kids to improve.

When they play outside with their sons and daughters they’ll invariably turn a game into a teaching session.

“Hold the ball a little firmer!”

“Sit up straighter and you’ll balance better!”

“Keep your right arm straight and make sure you watch the ball!”

Sound familiar?

This teaching is well intentioned, as dads want their kids to do better.

A dad’s enthusiasm to improve his son or daughter’s perfor-mance isn’t restricted to the backyard.

It often shows itself at children’s sports events when he freely shares his knowledge and experience with his proge-ny.

Sometimes a dad’s advice can do more harm than good. It can turn kids off sport and physical activity, particularly if he doesn’t know when to stop.

Research shows that kids under the age of ten predominant-ly play sport for two reasons – fun and friendships. Win-ning and playing well tend to be more important for (male) adults than kids.

If you (or a dad you know) enthusiastically gives/shouts ad-vice to your children when they’re playing sport then here are six words to use instead:

“I LOVE TO WATCH YOU PLAY!”

Kids love it when their parents are interested in them and their activities. They are not so keen when parents become coaches.

If you want your child to continue playing sport into adoles-cence and beyond then be an enthusiastic supporter, not an enthusiastic coach.

It’s hard for many blokes to restrict themselves to the sup-port role as coaching is in their DNA. But that’s no excuse. And we need to learn better ways if we want our kids to con-tinue to enjoy participating in sport.

So start practising, “I love to watch you play!”

There, that’s not so hard!

It’s almost here. Halloween! So get ready to have some fun.

This is an activity for everybody, for older and for young.

So here are the rules—you must dress up and be kind to all you see

There are lots of kids who are looking for treats, so make sure you’re not greedy!

After trick or treating, come along to the Uniting Church Hall

We are having a Halloween Party that will be awesome fun for all.

So come along and bring your tea and have a dance and play

There’s a playground for kids and space to run with spooky music from back in the day!

We might even have a little comp for who’s costume is the best.

One for a boy and one for a girl, the kids vote for their “favouritest”!

So grab your friends and have a chat and organise your gear.

It’s not long now until the fun starts, Halloween is almost here!

Saturday October 31st Trick or treating times—3.30pm-5.30pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Homes participating will have a balloon out the front (Streets that have been invited to participate will be in next weeks

newsletter).

If you or anyone you know would like to hand out goodies from your home, please contact Lynda on 54742534 or send

your address to 26 Buckley Street Harcourt.
