The next decade will show, if the numbers prove correct a huge jump in prospective Board candidates. The new category produced tremendous results this past spring. One hundred sixty participants applied for the written exam during their year of graduation. The College Board of Directors now needs, more then ever, to monitor its results with the candidates so it can evaluate the mentoring we do. It would be beneficial if the college could be proactive and make initial contact with the candidates rather then having to wait for the candidates to seek our services. AAE has with its establishmentof the educator fellowship awards. I would like to add the College's "two cents" and ask all of you that can to volunteer to teach at your nearest Endodontic Department the rewards of this act of volunteerism goes way beyond the "high" received from any other source.

Well, Summer Conference 2006 is history. Wow, how fast those two years of preparation flew by. The conference held at the Hyatt Tamaya resort and spa on Aug. 2nd to 6th was wildly successful----according to "independent sources"(the very erudite and critical attendees). The speakers, Dr's Markus Hapaasalo and Richard Schwartz were excellent and more than held their own in competition with the surrounding environment. But I will leave the details of what went on to our very able editor, Dr. Debra Meadows.

UnfOitunately into everyone's life some rain must fall. In the last six months I have seen the passing of two friends and mentors: (1) Herb Schilder was my mentor and after a rocky start we became friends. What more can be added to the mountain of accomplishments of this "little giant". Standing on his shoulders allowed me to see my way to a successful career. I remember him telling me that it was going to be a daunting task being the first Schilder trained Endodontist in New York City. I

don't think he realized how much easier he made it for me. Although knowing herb as well as I did, he probably had it all planned out. (2) Irv fried was my "pal" since the day we met in 1966. I was a green behind the ears new instructor at Columbia and he was my first student. frv being older then me and at least five inches taller was intimidating. But this man was as I called him "a big soft bear" we had many good times together, along with some tough ones. But Irv was always there with a philosophical turn or a corny joke and all would be good again. I will miss both Herb and frv in different ways but with great sorrow.

I would like to remind you that the college has a real treat in store for you at the next AAE meeting in Philadelphia. The day and date are Thursday, April 26th 2007 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. The speaker is Dr. D. Walter Cohen, the world renowned Periodontist. So be sure to mark your calendars and attend this very exciting lecture and pinning of the new diplomates.

I would like to close by appealing to our fellow diplomates who have not yet applied for membership in the College. You are missing the growth of an organization that is just now beginning to do good things. Join the majority of diplomates that are benefiting from the colleges strong support of the ABE and AAE. Have a healthy and happy remainder to 2006. Look forward to a successful 2007 and enjoy!!!!!!!!

.S~Cre!ary's Rep~r~ _(Su'!!merjFall) ~Y Haral~ E. Gaadis The business of the College of

Diplomates was carried out since the last Secretary's report by monthly conference calls with the Directors and meetings held at the AAE in March and the COD summer conference in August. The focus of this review will be to report on the 2006 Grossman luncheon, address the results of the College's appeal for increased recognition and exposure from the AAE membership and report on the 2006 Summer Conference held at the Santa Ana Pueblo Hyatt Resort in New Mexico.

The Grossman Luncheon was very well attended. Our speaker, Dr. Charles Bertolami, Dean of the University of California School of Dentistry, delivered the keynote address. His topic entitled "Why our Ethics Curricula Don't Work: A Wink and a Blink" was very well received. As reported by the Secretary in a previous Pinnacle, various suggestions for the increased recognition and exposure from the AAE were discussed by the Board of Directors. The Directors requested a meeting with the Executive Board of the AAE and the Directors of the ABE. The Secretary is happy to report that both

meetings were concluded satisfactorily. Our booth at the national meet

ing was adjacent to that of the ABE in the Oasis area of the exhibit hall. Inclusion of Director's names and photographs and the Mission Statement will be included in the 2007 AAE Directory. Photographs of the College Directors together with the newDiplomates should be included in the annual session's program. Ribbons designating College Directors and Officers will be added to the ID badges. A user friendly link between the AAE's and the College's web pages will be established. Identification of the candidates for Diplomate status will be forthcoming and added to the College's database in order to allow contact and presentations for mentoring by College members. This will aid in the successful completion of the certification process. It was suggested that the ABE include

the following on the ABE application fonn. "Permission is hereby granted to release my name to the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontists for the sole purpose of receiving information regarding the College's activities".

A very successful Summer

Conference ~as held on the Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico. The Hyatt Resort was a beautiful structure that blended into the landscape in a very special way. Over 70 College members and their families were present. Our two speakers presented a unique program that was very well received by the attendees. Dr. Markus Haapasalo, the Chair of Endodontics at the University of British Columbia, opened the meeting with a most informative presentation entitled "It's all about infections...almost". He has authored over 80 papers in the field of endodontic microbiology, disinfection and medicaments. Dr. Richard Schwartz, in private practice in San Antonio and a faculty member at UTHSCSA, has authored "Fundamentals of Operative Dentistry" and his presentation was entitled "Everything an endodontist needs to know about restorative dentistry, but is afraid to ask". He also included a most interesting talk on the role endodontists should take in placement of implants.

In sum, this has been a busy year for the Directors of the College of Diplomates. It is expected that the next year will be the same.

All present residents are predestined Diplomates

First, I would like thank each and every COD Board CertifIcation Ambassador who actively participated in preparing residents for the written ABE exam given this year for the fIrst time ...DURING THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM. Let us all join in and congratulate the ABE for this LANDMARK decision!

It was The COD's hope that every resident in every program who was eligible to take the written exam, do so. Apparently nearly 160 residents from across the country took advantage of this

OPPORTUNITY. The COD applauds every resident who took the time to begin the journey to the "Pinnacle of Success" ... namely : BOARD CERTIFIED DIPLOMATE OF THE AMERICAN BOARD OF ENDODONTICS.

The COD would request that each COD Ambassador at each program, keep and compile statistics of how many residents took the exam and of course how many passed! Each Ambassador should be receiving a letter from the COD asking them for specifIc information regarding the ABE written exam. Please return the requested information ASAP so the COD can begin to compile statistics in regards to the board process and how the college can best help candidates. We additionally want to remind the Ambassadors to continue to encourage any residents who did not take the written exam this past June, to prepare to take the written ABE exam next June and for those who did pass the exam, to make preliminary application to the ABE immediately.

Our goal is simple: ALL PRESENT

RESIDENTS ARE PREDESTINED DIPLOMATES.

Additionally, it was my pleasure to represent The College of Diplomates at the Bender, Seltzer and Grossman Academic review in Philadelphia held September 8-10, 2006.

This review course given by internationally renowned speakers was attended by 56 residents, 15 faculty members, and 48 private practitioners. 15 Endodontic programs were represented, and participants came from 5 countries. Included in the sessions was a presentation by the ABE and a reenactment of an ABE oral examination showing the correct and the incorrect approach to answering oral examination questions given by the ABE. A great time was had by all and the Philly hospitality was outstanding!

I thank my fellow Endodontists for allowing me to serve our profession!

Your friend and colleague - Andre K Mickel, Director of Mentoring, COD of the ABE- [email protected].

2006 Louis I. Grossman Luncheon is a Success! The Grossman luncheon, honor

ing the endodontists who achieved Board certification in 2005 was held at the AAE meeting in Hawaii on Thursday March 30. Mentors, teachers, family and friends gathered to honor their outstanding achievement.

Dr. Charles Bertolami, the dean at UCSF School of Dentistry spoke on "Why Our Ethics Curricula Don't Work: A Wink vs. a Blink". He examined the shortcoming of existing ethics curricula. He emphasized that dental school is a sufficiently intensive experience and during

this time there is an unparalleled opportunity to positively influence students in their ethical formation on a deep personal

level. This opportunity should not be lost. Please enjoy the photos on the

following page. They are fromthe luncheon of Dr. Bertolami and the new diplomates.

Remember to mark your calendars now so you can join us in Philadelphia to honor the 2006 diplomates!

A special thanks to Dr. Eric Rivera and the AAE for sharing their pictures

The 2006 University of Michigan 19th Annual Review of the Biological and Clinical Aspects of Endodontology was held on March 16, 17, 18,2006 and it was a great success.

The two and one half day board program presented a com prehensive study of the most recent endodontic research as

well as a follow up of the classic endodontic literature review. The U of M Conference stressed the value of evidence base endodontics.

The course objective is to offer the most pertinent endodontic information that candidates for American Board certification will utilize for their Board preparation.

The College of Diplomates sponsored a soft drink/wine and hors d'oeuvre reception at the completion of the second lecture day and it was well attended.

During my introduction of Dr. Carl Newton, who was the visiting AAE/ABE Director, I shared the history of the COD and its mission to mentor and educate candidates for Board certification.

Dr. Newton followed with his, in depth, presentation of the Board guidelines, requirements and time lines. He detailed any changes in the Board process and the challenges that every candidate needed to know.

Dr. Newton, former COD Secretary and Director, acknowledged the COD efforts to increase the numbers of candidates taking the three stages of Board certification and to increase the percentages of candidates successfully passing the Boards. Dr. Newton is to be thanked for his leadership with the COD and now with his ABE service. He has been a great ambassador for the Specialty of Endodontics.
