POPE FRANCIS VISITS PHILADELPHIA by Emily Fitzgerald

“They call individuals and communities to wor-ship God, the source of all life, liberty and hap-piness. They remind us of the transcendent dimension of human existence and our irreduc-ible freedom in the face of any claim to abso-lute power.”

- Pope Francis Independence Hall Speech. The first feeling that stood out to me when hearing Pope Francis speak was peace, pow-er, and an indescribable feeling you had to be there to experience. With thousands of people standing with me, I felt like I was the only one

listening to him. Waiting, lying on the grass of Independence Hall for hours, but seemed like days, was worth his 20 minute speech. While I was waiting I talked to a variety of people from all over the world. I was amazed how far some people had traveled to hear him speak. When he arrived, it was a massive wave of people. Being small I was pushed and pulled everywhere but that didn’t stop or prevent me from seeing and hearing him speak. We all were like sardines tightly packed together shoulder to shoulder. I bulldozed my way through because I was curious and interested to hear his talk. There, right in front of me, less than 50 feet away, he stood. Since he did not speak English, I had to read from the big screens. He talked about religious liberty and globalization. He made a connection with me that was the most special and that I will never forget. Thousands of people standing around me. We all said the Our Father together as a united church community. I will always cherish having seen and heard him. The positive and loving energy that surround me was an experience I cannot describe. It was great that I was so close to him. He sent an overall message that unity, peace, and prayer will bring us all closer to God. This was his mes-sage that we, the people of God need to spread to the world: to bring peace and a closer rela-tionship with God.

Thank You Bishop Sullivan by Matthew Moleski

On September 25th, Pope Francis said Mass at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Thousands of people were able to attend, and Paul VI was given tickets for administra-tion, and two students. I had the privilege of being one of those students to go on the trip. We drove up to Hamilton Train Station where we took a train to Manhattan. We had to wait in line for about two hours to get in but the chance to see Pope Francis, as well as the many music performances such as Norm Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, and Harry Connick, Jr. made the wait well worth it. It was a lot of fun going on the trip to see Pope Francis. It was a long day, from driving to Hamilton to taking the train up and then coming back, but it was worth every minute of it. Seeing Pope Francis live was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before and I will treasure the memory of that day for the rest of my life.

OPENING MASS CELEBRATING 50 YEARS! by Grace Jablonoski

On September 17th, Bishop Sullivan came to Paul VI to celebrate our opening school mass. The Mass also opened our 50th anniversary year: 1966-2016. The celebrations were beautiful and truly set the tone for this 2015-2016 school year. In the Camden Dio-cese this year is the “Year of the Family.” Luckily my brothers (Theodore, junior and John, freshman) and I that attend PVI had the privilege of greeting Bishop Sullivan and welcoming him to our newly renovated campus as well as introducing him to some of the other families that attend Paul VI. Bishop Sullivan said a beautiful mass and really made us realize how lucky we are to attend such a beautiful school.

As Bishop Sullivan con-cluded the Mass , Sister Marianne, our principal as well as Mr. Chambers, our president, gave a beautiful talk speaking about Bishop Sullivan and thanking him for coming to visit us. Af-ter this, we graced him with gifts such as gift bas-kets filled with PVI gear! Bishop Sullivan then blessed our new media center as well as our new dining hall. After this we all enjoyed cake and spoke about how lovely

the Mass was as well as how wonderful the new renovations are. Thank you again to Bishop Sullivan for coming by and celebrating with us!

Reflections from the Senior Retreat

#2 Pencils...A Life Lesson by Brianna D’Ambrosio

St. Katharine Drexel was born of a wealthy family and could have become anything that she wanted to be. Since she had such a strong Catholic faith, she chose the sisterhood. When she joined, she was to serve Native and African American missions. After her parents death, she inherited most of her father’s money. She had received about 7 million dollars but because it was back in the day, you could assume that was about 700 million dollars in today’s time. With all the money she had, she funded, supplied, and staffed over 60 schools across America for Native and African Americans. One school that she established was Xavier University. This was the first black, co-ed, Catholic institution. It was clear that Saint Katherine had a deep compassion for the poor and the oppressed. One prime ex-ample of this is the pencils in her shrine. She had several pencils that were practically down to the nub of the eraser. You can see that she was so concerned about poverty that she made sure she did not live extravagantly. Saint Katharine Drexel truly devoted her life to respect the common humanity for the Native and African Americans.

Praise in Song by Ashley Hiester

Although the retreat was a little bit chaotic, every thought left my mind as I conducted the choir during Mass in the beautiful chapel at the Shrine of St. Katharine Drexel. Singing in general allows me and my fellow choir members to transport ourselves to a completely different place, but to be able to sing at such a beautiful place, honoring such an amazing saint, was truly inspiring. When Mass began, everything fell into place and we were able to create a place of complete peace. I am truly grateful that I was given the opportunity to serve my fellow classmates and be a part of a such a beautiful celebration.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

“Character, Scholarship, Leadership, Service” by Timothy Webb

The Paul VI National Honor Society is already in full swing this school year with Ms. Nicole Estrella serving as moderator for her third year in a row. This 2015-2016 school year the National Honor Society has elected new officers: Timothy Webb (President), Maureen Gilkin (Vice President, Matthew McCahill (Treasurer) and Na-tasha Filipov (Secretary). October 19th was the National Honor Society’s Induction Ceremony where 93 juniors and seniors were welcomed into the Paul VI Lucette Chapter. This means the Nation-al Honor Society in Paul VI High School has grown to an impressive 173 students this school year. With this many members of the school community taking part in our school’s National Honor Society Chapter, we have a lot of opportunity. The NHS will continue its tutoring every day during free periods for those students, particularly un-derclassmen who need some help or review in any subject area. This goes on each period of the day in the Media Center. When it gets around midterm and final weeks, the NHS will hold larger tutoring sessions after school for several days to help stu-dents get organized and study in the most efficient way. Along with tutoring, the National Honor Society has many service projects lined up throughout the school year. There will be a food drive just in time for Thanksgiving to

benefit the local food banks. This will help families in need of a good holiday meal completely free. Then, in the month of December, the NHS will be running the USO Drive. For this drive, items like toothpaste, combs, and bars of soap are collected to benefit an organization that helps our nations troops. This was a fantastic success during last year’s holiday season and the NHS hopes to raise the bar even higher this year. The National Honor Society’s big-gest service project will be on Martin Luther King Day. Each NHS officer will be the head of a service project within the area to give back to or help communities that are less fortunate.

2015 Annual Giving Campaign Update

Our Annual Giving Campaign is well underway! With the help of many parents, students, and alumni, we were able to contact thousands of alumni during our recent social media and Giving Tuesday event in follow-up to our annual cam-paign letter. Whether you were a volunteer helping to get the word out, or made a contribution, or tweeted a selfie message at #PVI GIVES … we thank you!

So many of you have played an important role in helping to unite a community of Paul VI families, alumni, and friends through your participation and efforts. Paul VI is blessed to have parent, alumni, and student volunteers to help us plan, organize, and promote programs throughout the year. In a typical year, there are dozens of events that have allowed Paul VI to share its success with school families and alumni—through your involvement with fundraising and recruitment initiatives, receptions and gatherings, and support for our sports teams, clubs, and the fine and performing arts programs. You are an essential part of the school’s efforts to keep, parents, alumni, and friends active, informed, and involved. Last year, we raised $82,130 in un-restricted dollars for the annual fund, $180,230 in scholarships, totaling $262,360 in total donations to annual giving. This support helps us to keep tuition at a reasonable level while allowing us to make meaningful enhancements to our academic and extracurric-ular offerings as well as sound, energy-efficient renovations and major upgrades to our facility such as the new learning media cen-ter and dining hall. These improvements would have been impossible without your support to the annual giving campaign.

We are grateful for all that you do to keep us moving forward. We hope you are able to join us this year in helping us reach our goal of $100,000. If you haven’t made a contribution and would like to, please find the enclosed return envelope for your convenience or go to our secure online giving page at: www.pvihs.org Help us make this 50th Anniversary truly golden for our students!

Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy Christmas season.

Fall Athletics PrACTice Like A Champion

by Maureen Gilkin The Paul VI Girls Volleyball team consists of, for the first time this year three teams. Paul VI has always had a Varsity and JV volleyball team but this year there has been an addition of a Freshman team. Coach Tim Linehan is the coach of the Varsity team and Coach Tim Casale coaches the JV team. Rebecca Brown has been added to the Paul VI Volleyball Community. Coach Becca has been a great addition to all teams. She has influenced the varsity team with her knowl-edgeable coaching skills. Having a freshman team will focus in on the fundamentals of the game and will give each player an experience for JV and Varsity level. This year the volleyball team's motto is PrACTice Like A Champion. ACT stands for Attitude, Chemistry and Team while focusing on the Play Like a Champion theme. ACT, attitude, chemistry and team affect each other. A positive attitude is needed to have chemistry on the court which is needed to become a team. The Paul VI Girl's Volleyball Program is a very successful

program. In the six years of the program the team has been successful as conference champions and making it to the State Finals. Each team hopes to continue to strive in winning as a team and prACTicing and playing like champions.

Girls Cross Country by Lucy McGrew

Cross country is not an easy sport. There are no rest days; every day is conditioning - whether it be physical or mental - to get oneself into the best shape he or she has ever been in. That is why, year after year, the girls cross country team never fails to put forth a great team in some way, shape or form. This year a large percent-age of our team is freshmen, and it's been great to watch them grow into their places in the team. It's hard being a freshman, but I think having a supportive team of girls on ones side can help make it a little bit easier. Not only is our team supportive, but also full of talent this year. Among the varsity seven we have front runner freshman Anne Skiles who races a time of 19:45 for a 3.1 mile race. Right behind her is senior Michaela Ur-bach with a time of 20:05, and then junior Ann Foley with a 20:17. Senior Molly Gallagher and freshmen Miranda Zevallos and Carly Schmidt have also been running great times this season. Our season so far has been a good one. We've run at meets such as Shore Coaches at Holmdel Park, the section-als meet at Delsea Regional High School, and the Olympic Conference Meet at Rowan College at Gloucester County. We placed second at sectionals, and also took first over all at the Camden County meet at Timber Creek Park. As a team, we are looking forward to the Parochial meet at Delsea Regional High School and the State Meet at Holmdel Park. I know that together, as a team, we can conquer any course. We train hard so that we can race even harder. Cross country may be tough but believe me, the girls on this team are tougher.

Congratulations! Girls Volleyball South Jersey Sectional Champions.

Fall Athletics Girls Soccer

by Allie Darley It is hard to believe the 2015 girls' soccer season is coming to an end. Even though our record does not quite show it, our team has made many positive strides this season for the Paul VI family to be proud of. We are not a team with one star athlete; rather, we are a team devoted to each other and to the game. Every single game and practice, we have played together and worked hard for both personal successes and for the success of our team-mates. Our team has embodied the Play Like A Champion program and emphasized the motto to show good sportsmanship in everything we do, both on and off the field. One thing our team definitely has is heart. When we lose, we lose with pride and when we win, we win with humility.

Throughout my four years at Paul VI, our team has grown extremely close. Being on a team is a special kind of commitment, but it has been made even

more special thanks to the girls on my team. Between practices, sleepovers, pasta parties, and all the inside jokes, these girls have become so much more than just my teammates. This is officially my last soccer season as a Paul VI Eagle, but the memories and friendships I have made will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Girls Tennis by Emily Williamson

As the fall sport season comes to an end, players are asked to look back at not only their wins and losses, but also at their experience as a team. So far, the girls’ varsity tennis team, led by Coach James Cuartero and Assistant Coach Danielle Jacob, has gone 2-9, with a starting line-up including but not limited to; senior captains Gabby Brown, Emily Williamson, and JoJo Griggel, juniors Kat Da-novich and Maria Figurelli, sophomores Liz Danovich, Holly Thompson, Lizzy Franciosa, and freshman Morris-sey Walsh. The girls may not have a high record as a team, but have won 20 matches as singles and doubles players this season. Junior Emily Lyles shared her opinion about the girls tennis team, “tennis is about the team effort and supporting each other through wins and losses.”

On Friday, October 16th, the team celebrated a major win against Woodrow Wilson on their senior night. Not only did every player win her match, but the team stayed for over three hours just to support the first and second singles during grueling, close call matches. This dedication to supporting each other is typical in the PVI tennis family, and many are upset to see the season com-ing to an end.

Boys Cross Country by Sean Bonner

As each school year comes to a close, a whole new year is just beginning for a handful of PVI students. The hot, humid days of June are when the Paul VI Boy Cross Country Team, led by coaches Breton Bonnette, Chris Platt and Colin MacFarlane '06, begins its season. Summer training is the most drawn-out, and most brutal 2 and half months of any young runner's life. For a team to be successful, there are few off days. PVIXC ran nearly every day over the course of this summer, fighting to become the best, most fit team we can be. Everyone on the team truly put their blood, sweat and tears into preparing their body for the season's upcoming races, which begin in September, and run all the way through November. Each member of the team, particularly the Fresh-men, suffer along the way. They also manage to form friendships that will last all the way through Senior year; probably further. But, soon enough, Septem-ber arrives, and the fun really begins.

One of the brightest moments of the season so far had to have been Freshman Johnny Paolucci bolting through the 2 mile course of the legendary Holmdel Park, and winning his race, coming in 1st place out of over 100 runners. Not far behind has been fellow Freshman Matt Slattery, running consistently solid races, earning his place on the 7-man Varsity team. Johnny and Matt are perfect examples of the youthful talent our team hopes to build on. Co-captain Sam Giumarello leads a talented pool of Sophomores, and Stephen Conte, our other co-captain, rounds out an experienced class of Juniors. Since only 7 can run in a varsity race at a time, our 20-man team always competes in junior-varsity races. The JV squad is filled with runners that work hard everyday to improve themselves. Freshman Ben Jennings, Sophomore twins Evan and Dyl-an Jackson, Junior Robbie Schafer, and Seniors Cameron Locantore and Gabe Schwankert are just a handful of the several young men that race their hearts out at every course they encounter. Together, we form a young team, poised and hungry for suc-cess. Each of us are well aware of the history and success of Paul VI's Cross Country program. Those days may seem to be long in the past, but our team is eager to begin its own legacy; a legacy the entire Paul VI community can be proud of.

PVI Dance Team by Claire D’Ascenzo

In every person’s life, there is some unique passion they possess. Sometimes, this interest is a sport, activity, or a hob-by that they enjoy on their own. Personally, my love has always been dancing. This passion has grown tremen-dously as a result

of the many opportunities that Paul VI provides for dancers. Paul VI has eight dance classes every day during the school session, a Competition Dance Team, and two incredible dance teams called the Eaglettes and The Varsity Dance Team . The Eaglettes and Varsity Dance Team perform at every home football game during half time, and at all school pep rallies. Aside from our entertaining half time shows, we provide school spirit by sitting up in the stands, and cheering the football team on throughout the entire game. The Eaglettes are led by Ms. Diegel, and captain Nicole Williams. The Varsity Dance Team is under the direction of Ms. Daniels, and co- captains, Nina Lomanno and Lydia Merachnik.

As I looked back on the last three years, the majority of my most valuable memories have come from being on the Dance Team, and being involved in the Paul VI Dance program. There is truly no way to articulate the excitement performing at the football games brings. When I think about the Dance Team the last three years, it amazes me how much the Dance Team has grown in such a short time span. My freshmen year, there was about thirty girls on the Varsity Dance Team. Since then, the Eaglettes Dance Team has been formed, and the number of girls on the Dance Team has doubled. The Paul VI Dance Team and the Paul VI Dance Department are constantly growing and consistently improving each year.

As my fellow seniors and I end our last season on the Dance team, we feel honored to have been a part of such a phenomenal team. Being a part of the team has not only helped us grow as dancers, but also as individuals. We will never be able to fully express how thankful we are for this opportunity that we will value for the rest of our lives. We all feel a great deal of appreciation to have learned from Ms. Daniels and Ms. Diegel, and we will always value all that they have taught us.

PVI Football by Dominic Griffo

The 2015 football team is having a great season. Our team has a 5-1 record after completing the sixth game against Triton on October 23rd. We opened our season at home this year on September 11th with a win against Seneca. Our other wins were against Cherry Hill West, Clearview, Winslow, Triton and Moorestown. We currently have a 5-0 record in our conference. The Homecoming game was an exciting game and PVI was packed with fans to support our team and the Home-coming event. This year’s team is special for many reasons. Our team has 20 seniors on the roster. Many of us have played together since freshman year. Some of us have been together prior to starting at PVI in a spring football league. We have worked hard together to be better as a team and be ready for our opponents. As we approach the end of our season we will con-tinue to fight hard on the field together and advance to the playoffs.

Boys Soccer by Jack Stewart

"The 2015 boys’ soccer season is one that I myself, the team, and Paul VI will not soon forget. The previous three seasons leading up to this past one were somewhat of a struggle for the program - but with each year came improvement. Every year the team was winning more and more games, earning more respect throughout South Jersey, and becoming more of a “family” rather than a “team.” But when this group of seniors, the Class of 2016, took the turf for the first time this summer, everyone felt like we needed to leave our mark; we wanted to be a part of something spe-cial. And with new head coach, Tim Mullowney, and a great group of kids, anything was possible. Determined to turn the program around, every player gave all they had in summer workouts and in the preseason, and it certainly paid off. After starting the season off with 3 wins, the team started to become more confi-

dent and you could feel the buzz going around the halls of Paul VI. As the season went on of course we had our struggles, but what was special about this year’s team is that we didn't let it stop us - we prevailed. We kept our focus and kept working towards our goal, and to everyone’s surprise we won the Olympic Conference. Although winning conference for the first time in 16 years was the highlight of our season, that was only the beginning of this year’s mag-ic. After finishing the regular season at 11-5, we were seeded 7th in South Jersey’s Non-Public A Tournament, and awarded a home playoff game for the first time in over 10 years, and who better to host than our rival Bishop Eustace. We ended up winning 4-1 and with that brought the program’s first playoff win, again, in over 10 years. We shocked everyone with our next win over the #13 ranked team in the state, and second-seeded, The Pingry School, an away game in north Jersey. This season was certainly memorable for everyone, but none of this would have been enjoyable if it wasn't for the return of DaFlock. No one ever would have thought that the Paul VI boys’ soccer team would bring this school together, but the experience of 100+ students cheering us on made it all worthwhile. After supporting us against Eustace, our classmates made the trip to St. Augustine to watch us play in the South Jersey semifinal. Although our season ended with a 2-1 loss, the team achieved more than anyone could have ever imag-ined. I couldn’t be more proud to have led this team, with co-captains Tyler Foulke and Matt Kapczynski, and it was truly an honor. And I think it is safe to say that the Class of 2016 left a legacy on the Paul VI soccer program."

Congratulations! Boys Soccer National Division Olympic Conference
