The photo essay
Telling a story in ten pictures or less
Objective
When you finish this activity, you will be able to:–Visualize a story from beginning to
end–Capture photography that
represents each stage in the story–Utilize Photo Story 3 software to
create a photo essay
What is a photo essay?
• Like a written essay, it tells a story–Educates the viewer–Spark emotions from the viewer
• Can include music (or not)• Can include captions (or not)
What are the types of photo essays?
1.Time sequence2.Location3.Idea4.Event
Time sequence essays
• Tells a story chronologically• Most useful when passing of
time is relevant– Life of a bird, from being in an
egg to laying their own
• The time span can be any length– Your baby book would be a long
time sequence
location essays
• Captures feel and emotion of a particular location• Conveys information about that particular location• Should have a definite beginning and end
Idea essays
• Has a common theme that holds it together– One element should be consistent– Element can be visible (see below) or
not (wind, elevation, etc.)
Event essays
• Document an event– Be sure to cover the most important
parts (if you’re covering a soccer game, don’t leave out the final score)
• Birthday party, wedding, trip to HEB

Assignment: photo Essay1. You will take pictures for the purpose of telling a
story2. Your photo essay will require a minimum of ten
pictures, which means that you will have to take many more than ten to settle on the good shots
3. Using Photo Story 3 For Windows, you will upload your photos, music, and text to accurately and succinctly tell your story
4. We have never used this program, so play around with it and figure it out, hence the reason why you have two weeks
Submit the project as [your last name] Photo Essay [class period] and then turn it in to Mr. Nigrelli via Google Drive by the end of class on Friday, May 15th
