30Andover Fun Fact
In the 1960s, there existed a tradition for graduating Seniors known as the “Burning of Kühner.” After an all-class dinner, the Seniors would form a procession and march up Main Street from the outskirts of town. At the end of their parade, the Seniors would light a fire, dance and chant around the flames and throw their textbooks in the blaze.

this month in Andover history…November 27, 1893 – The Andover student body unanimously voted to postpone all further Andover/Exeter athletic contests after it was discovered that at least two of the Exeter players in the November 11 game (which Exeter had won 26-10), as well as Exeter’s catcher in the baseball game that spring, had been professional athletes. The contests were not resumed until the fall of 1896.

this month in Andover history…The Philomathean Society was originally founded in 1825 by four students who, after not being admitted to a fraternity because they were not Seniors, decided to make their own society. The society’s original purpose was not debate, but, according to Philo’s constitution, “mutual improvement.” The main “debates” that occurred in Philo’s first few years regarded which books were most suitable for the society’s library.
First published in 1857, The Phillipian is Phillips Academy’s weekly student newspaper. Entirely uncensored and student-run, the paper is distributed every Friday from September to June.
The Phillipian is 12-16 pages long and consists of five sections: News, Commentary, Sports, Arts and Features. Each issue reports on campus news, athletics and performances, publishes insightful opinion pieces and
provides original humor.
Students are the writers, editors and principal subjects of the paper. Headlines, lead photos and profiles preserve student accomplishments and create a window into the Andover community. The Phillipian serves as a forum for disuccsion. As the written voice of the school, it creates a network on campus and in the far-flung
Phillips Academy community through a common base of information.
