The Philippines has rich coastal and marine resources having some of the world’s richest ecosystems, characterized by extensive coral reefs, seagrass beds, and dense mangrove forests. The Philippines is also rich in agricultural resources such as coconut, banana, pineapple, rice and rubber among the few, of which some of these agricultural crops are raised for export. It is also blessed with areas of lush green forest which does not only provide a great deal of forest products such as timbers, but also is a house to diverse flora and fauna. The Philippines has great potential sources of renewable energy, from wind, hydropower, geothermal, biomass, solar to ocean energy. This will soon reduce our dependence on expensive imported fuel if maximized. However, our natural resources are vulnerable to environmental hazards and climate change with great impacts on food security, energy supply and economic growth. To address these threats, there is a need for detailed information on our natural resources and to produce detailed resource maps that can be used for future planning analysis, for a more Pro-active and improved decision making. Thus, the government, through the Department of Science and Technology, had lunched the Philippine LiDar 2 Program, known as the Nationwide Detailed Resources Assessment using LiDar that aims to produce detailed resource maps for various applications on high value crops production, irrigation assessment, aquaculture production, forest protection and discovery of renewable sources of energy. What is Lidar? LIDAR, stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges to the Earth. These light pulses—combined with other data recorded by the airborne system— generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape of the Earth and its surface characteristics. It is use to produce high resolution and more accurate mapssuch as shoreline maps, digital elevation models and in many other applications.
