Mad Cow Theatre was founded on the belief that the theatre is a dynamic and powerful means of social understanding, as well as a hugely entertaining art form.

Through the combination of passionate, skillful acting and compelling, insightful writing, nurtured by an attentive and ever-changing process, Mad Cow presents entertaining works of theatre to an ever-widening audience — promoting, enhancing and celebrating the human condition through art.

Mad Cow Theatre is supported in part with public funds from the United Arts of Central Florida, host of power2give.org/CentralFlorida and the Collaborative Campaign for the Arts, and by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, the Florida Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Downtown Development Board, and Orange County through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program. A great nation deserves great art!

Mad Cow is a 501(c)(3) organization and welcomes all donations including funds, materials, time and good will. We are especially delighted when audience members bring others to share the theatrical experience.

PHILIP BARRY (Playwright) Philip Jerome quinn Barry (1896–1949) was born in Rochester, New York, to a successful Irish immigrant and a mother who was of old Philadelphia Irish Catholic stock. Barry entered Yale in 1914 and plunged eagerly into campus literary activities. During World War I, he was rejected for military services due to his poor eyesight but served in the Communications Office of the State Department in London. Returning to Yale after the war, his play Autonomy won a prize offered by the school dramatic society, and, over strident family objections, he enrolled in george Pierce Baker’s famed 47 Workshop at Harvard. Barry’s play The Jilts won the Herndon Prize, and Richard Herndon himself agreed to produce it in 1923, changing the title to You and I. Its success was the first of many on Broadway for Barry. He had a major hit with Paris Bound (1927), a look at infidelity among the rich. Barry’s subsequent plays met with varying degrees of success: The Mystery Cock Robin (1928), Holiday (1928), Hotel Universe (1930), Tomorrow and Tomorrow (1931), and The Animal Kingdom (1932). Deeply saddened by the death of his baby daughter, Barry took darker turns in his next plays: The Joyous Season (1934), Bright Star (1935), and Here Come the Clowns (1938). Returning to the sort of play he was known for, Barry enjoyed his greatest success with the high comedy The Philadelphia Story (1939), followed by the Tallulah Bankhead vehicle Foolish Notion (1945). Considered one of our finest creators of high comedy, Barry died in 1949 in his family apartment on Park Avenue.
