Canine Aggression: Why Do Dogs Bite?(Part 3 of a Series)
This is continuation of Jim Osorio’s “Canine Encounters: DefensiveTactics” class-inspired series. So far we’ve looked at why dogs maybite and two of the ten acknowledged levels of canine aggression. Ok,some may argue there are up to twenty-one types, but we’re going tocover the most commonly accepted “Top Ten” (see Petscoop editionsMay and July for previous articles)
3) Fear Aggression:
Fear Aggression Body Language
Fear aggression is actually quite common but all too often confusedwith dominate aggression. Fear aggressive, or even just plain fearful, dogs absolutely could bite but they frequently growl or bark ratheraggressively when they are afraid of another animal, person orunusual situation which they find frightening or threatening. In mostcases, the dog would likely prefer to get away from that being or thingwhich has him startled but when flight is not an option, the fight

response may kick in and they go into defense mode. During thisstage, the dog may bite and/or nip, especially if they feel cornered, soexperts advise not to turn your back on an animal experiencing thistype of stress.
Many owners come to the conclusion that when their pet maydemonstrate this type of behavior, the dog was previously abused, mistreated or traumatized, while in actuality, the cause may besomething as simple as a lack of socialization. Lack of socializationleaves the animal ill-equipped with the necessary abilities to adjust tounusual situations, people or animals. This is why we emphasize theimportance of properly socializing puppies and new pets from thebeginning. (Bear in mind some animals are naturally more timid orpassive than others.)
Another possible trigger of this response may be due to a child’saction. On a weekly basis we hear in the news about a child who wastragically bitten or “attacked” and the dog later (possibly unjustifiably)euthanized for being labeled a “dangerous animal.” Young childrenare unpredictable and could easily do something to aggravate the dog(pulling ears, poking eyes or ears, pulling on their body- as seenbelow). The dog may growl to warn the child to stop; however, the childmay not understand what that means yet and if the dog is unable toescape, the dog's hand (ok, paw) may be forced and his last means ofcommunication may be to nip or bite. Additionally, if the child’s actionsare causing physical pain, the dog may also react out of painaggression (to be discussed in a later article). Children should alwaysbe taught how to properly treat pets, and children, especially veryyoung children, should NEVER be left unattended or unsupervisedwith pets.
Dog is exhibiting fear due to the child’s aggravating behavior
Another root cause may derive from a fear of particular noises. Thinkof thunderstorms, very loud noises, or fireworks…..does your pettremble uncontrollably, get “snippy,” hide under the bed, run, orposition himself so close that an ant couldn’t come between you?(This is just one of many reasons PAWS of Northeast LA providesfree/low cost pet ID tags.) Pets are like humans in many ways, including that each have their own set of phobias or things that terrifythem. They may run out the front door, escape a fenced-in yard, etc.when frightened. Some pet owners have found products (the“Thundershirt,” for example) may help calm the dog to an extent.
If your pet continues to demonstrate a strong fear aggression responseeven after socialization, time or maturity, we suggest you consult aprofessional dog trainer. Attempting to change this behavior on yourown may do more harm than good, and, in turn, cause your dog to losehis trust in you. Locally, you can contact the Ouachita Valley DogTraining Club regarding classes or personalized training for your pet(www.ovdtc.org).
Stay tuned to the September edition of the Petscoop for more!
Vaccination Clinic for Zip Code 71202Low-cost Vaccination Clinic
Saturday, August 23, 2014 9am-2pm
Ollie Burns Memorial Library - Richwood, LA
by Nina Bennett
PAWS of NE Louisiana is trying to be more proactive in
targeted areas to help promote responsible pet ownership.
We are hosting a low-cost vaccination clinic for residents of
71202 (must provide proof of residency) in partnership with
the Ouachita Parish Public Library. The areas we will be
targeting are proven to be high intake areas of the Ouachita
Parish Animal Shelter. If we can assist these neighborhoods
by having healthier pets with ID tags on their collars (so they
can get home quicker), maybe we won't have as many
animals picked up by animal control agencies or sick pets
entering the shelter.
For the first
100 pets, we
will provide
their rabies
and 7 in 1
vaccinations
plus each pet
will receive a
collar, leash
and pet ID tag.
All of this for
only $10.00. In
Ouachita Parish, all pets 6 months or older must have
annual rabies shots. There is also a Leash Law requiring any
dog off their owner's property to be on leash. If owners
qualify for our low-income Spay/Neuter Assistance Program,
we will also set them up with an appointment to have their
pets "fixed" at no cost to the pet owners.
If this event is successful and money is available (you know
we depend on donations from the public!), we hope to have
more of these clinics in other targeted neighborhoods.
Donations can be made on our website by clicking HERE or
mailed to us at PAWS of NELA, P. O. Box 15432, Monroe, LA
71207. PAWS of NE Louisiana is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization and your donations are tax-deductible.

Why Should I Vaccinate My Pet?by Adam Rowan
There are many reasons to vaccinate your pet. Time and
time again do I see pets that have viruses and diseases that
are completely preventable simply by vaccination. Failure to
vaccinate is not always due to the pet owners’ refusal to get
their pet vaccinated, many pet owners don’t know how often
their pet should be vaccinated, or the owner will believe they
can’t afford it. The reality is there are many diseases and
viruses out there that can attack your pet and the treatment
for those diseases is very expensive and some of these
diseases can be fatal.
What Are Vaccinations?
Vaccines prepare the body to fight off disease causing
organisms. Vaccines are antigens, which means they look,
and present themselves as a specific disease to the body’s
immune system but do not actually cause the disease. If the
body is ever exposed to the real disease it will be prepared
to fight off the organisms.
What vaccines should a puppy receive,
and when? Puppies should get a series of four sets of vaccinations
starting at six weeks old. They should receive a seven- in-
one at six weeks and nine weeks of age. This shot will
protect the puppy from parvo, corona, distemper,
adenovirus, hepatitis, and parainfluenza. All of these
diseases can be fatal to your puppy. Parvo is by far the most
common of these especially living in the south with a warm
moist climate this virus can survive for very long periods of
time and can be carried on your shoes or clothing. I see
case after case after case of this virus due to lack of
vaccinations. Treatment for this virus is no less than three to
four hundred dollars and can reach seven to eight hundred
dollars very easily.
At twelve weeks of age the puppy should receive the eight-
in-one vaccine which includes the diseases and viruses
above plus leptospirosis. He or she should also receive a
bordetella or as some people refer to it as, the kennel cough
vaccine. This protects the puppy from the upper respiratory
virus called bordetella.
At sixteen weeks the puppy should receive the eight- in-one
again and a rabies vaccination. In the state of Louisiana you
have to be current on your pets rabies vaccine and have a
current rabies tag and certificate, it’s the law. Your dog will
receive this vaccine yearly.
How often should my kitten be
vaccinated?Kittens only receive a series of three sets of shots starting at
nine weeks old. They protect kittens from feline distemper,
feline calici virus, feline herpes, and rabies. Three to four
weeks should be allowed between the vaccinations.
How often should my adult dogs and cats
be vaccinated? After the initial puppy and kitten shots they should be
vaccinated once a year. Some veterinarians use three year
vaccines, but I do not know of any in north Louisiana.
Vaccination Risk
Some pets can have an allergic reaction symptoms include
swelling of the face, vomiting and whelps. These are easily
altered if you consult a veterinarian.
PAWS Animal Shelter Rescue ProgramThanks to our wonderful donors, sponsors and foster
families, we are able to rescue many dogs from the
Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter each month. Since 2003, we
have saved the lives of over 850 dogs and cats! Many of
them have had to endure heartworm treatment, mange
treatment, limb amputations or other surgeries due to
neglect and injuries they received prior to entering the
shelter. All of these awesome pets have gone on to loving
new families with the help of our rescue partners!
In July we were able to pull these 12 wonderful dogs from the
shelter who have either already found new homes or will
soon be on their way to new lives!
There are always many more waiting at the shelter who
need our help. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful
rescue effort, please consider donating to our Rescue
Program or becoming a foster family.

Mr. P's Tees & The Pops Fund
Local artist extraordinaire Lissy Sanders Compton and her company,Mr. P’s Tees, selectedthe PAWS of NE LA PopsFund as the recipient oftheir newest ‘shirt thatgives back’. Lissycreated an original, handdrawn image of Popsthat is featured on asuper soft, gray AmericanApparel Tee. The shirtsare $28 and the PopsFund gets 15% of allsales.
Pops was a senior black Lab surrendered to the Ouachita ParishAnimal Shelter in June 2011 because he was “old”. He was in horrificshape and was scheduled for euthanasia the very next day. Pops wasinstead adopted by PAWS Rescue Program Coordinator JenniferPesnell and soon had a huge fan club on Facebook. Pops’ body hadbeen neglected for many years yet his spirit and zest for life was aninspiration to many. He grew younger before our eyes. He taught usabout sharing one’s home and heart with an older dog. He taught usabout second chances and that is it never too late for a secondchance. He taught us about unconditional love. Pops loved big sticksand soft dog beds. Most of all he loved Jennifer… almost as much asshe loved him!
Pops crossed the rainbow bridge 3 months after Jennifer rescued him.In the end, Jennifer said of her Poppers, “He is so very missed. I amtruly blessed that our paths crossed that Saturday morning at thepound and am thankful to have shared several months with him and tohave been able to share him with all of you. I hope his story bringinspiration to those who loved him from afar. Honor him by doingsomething good for someone or something less fortunate.”
The Pops Fund is just for that. It was generously established by
Barbara McIntosh with the help of Jane Dinh, both wonderful friends ofPAWS. Its purpose is to help rescue the older dogs who end up at theOPAS; the ones who may not have had the best life, who probablyaren’t going to be adopted, who may not have much time left…but whostill have a lot of love to share!
Learn more about Pops’ story and how his ‘shirt that gives back’ wascreated HERE.
We are extremely honored that Mr. P’s Tees is helping Pops’ legacylive on. Thank you Mr. Ps!! The Pops Tees originally sold out in just 2weeks, raising over $200! Don’t worry, they are back in stock now andcan be purchased HERE or at K Sera in West Monroe on TrentonStreet. Hurry and order yours today before they are gone again!

Double Donationsby Jo Traylor
Over our 11 years we've been fortunate to have some
wonderful businesses sponsor PAWS activities. We strongly
encourage shopping locally with our sponsors whenever
possible. Sometimes it isn't possible due to time constraints,
distance, or product availability so resorting to internet
shopping may overcome those issues. We've encouraged
our readers
that shop
online to sign
up at
iGive.com.
Many, many
well-known
businesses,
and some not
so well-known
in our region,
have
partnered with iGive so that if their websites are accessed
through iGive, a portion of their sales is given to the
shoppers' favorite charity. PAWS does get donations from
iGive so it works!
Recently, a member informed PAWS that she had been a
member of iGive.com for nine years and loves to shop at
Amazon.com. Her iGive account had generated over $1000
in donations to PAWS over a nine year span!! The amazing
thing is donations were made to PAWS from iGive.com for
starting at their site and from Amazon.com for shopping
on their website. So that means PAWS got double the
donations without her having to spend twice the money.
Signup at iGive.com is free and really easy to use. Add your
favorite websites to My Favorite Stores or search for a
specific item or service. Just be sure to log on before
making purchases. As always, we truly appreciate our
sponsors, supporters, and volunteers.
Please spay or neuter your pets! If you
are a low-income pet owner and can't
afford it, we can help! Click HERE for our
