I. WITNESSING: PREPARATION FOR THE BATTLEFIELD

INTRODUCTION: IT’S A MIND GAME!

Q1. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU BELIEVE?

The Word of the Lord declares:

For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he – Proverbs 23:7.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus – Philippians 2:5.

So, if you think you dare not, you don’t. If you would like to win and you think you can’t, it’s almost a cinch you won’t. Life’s battles do not always go to the swifter man. The man who wins is the man who thinks he can!

The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me – John 14:30. There was in Him nothing that responded to Satan's sophistry. He did not consent to sin. Not even by a thought did He yield to temptation. So it may be with us. Christ's humanity was united with divinity; He was fitted for the conflict by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And He came to make us partakers of the divine nature. So long as we are united to Him by faith, sin has no more dominion over us. God reaches for the hand of faith in us to direct it to lay fast hold upon the divinity of Christ, that we may attain to perfection of character – Desire of Ages, p. 123.

For with God nothing shall be impossible – Luke 1:37.

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things [are] possible to him that believeth – Mark 9:23.

According to your faith be it unto you – Matthew 9:29.

Q2: BY WHAT MEANS DID JESUS OVERCOME IN THE CONFLICT WITH SATAN?

Desire of Ages, p. 123: By the word of God. Only by the word could He resist temptation. "It is written," He said. And unto us are given "exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." 2 Peter 1:4. Every promise in God's word is ours. "By every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" are we to live. When assailed by temptation, look not to circumstances or to the weakness of self, but to the power of the word. All its strength is yours. "Thy word," says the psalmist, "have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee." "By the word of Thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer." Ps. 119:11; 17:4.

Q3: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE RECEIVE THE WORD OF GOD BY FAITH?

Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 38: In every command and in every promise of the word of God is the power, the very life of God, by which the command may be fulfilled and the

13

promise realised. He who by faith receives the word is receiving the very life and character of God. What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve by the grace of God! 2 Corinthians 12:9: And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

Q4: WHAT IS THE SECRET OF SUCCESS?

Colporteur Ministry, p. 106: The secret of success is the union of divine power with human effort. Those who achieve the greatest results are those who rely most implicitly upon the Almighty Arm. If man is willing, God is able!

THE CALL

For many are called, but few [are] chosen – Matthew 22:14

Q5/6: WHAT IS THE CALL THAT JESUS SENDS OUT TO ALL MANKIND? WHAT ARE WE CALLED TO?

Matthew 11:28: Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Everyone who accepts Jesus as Saviour and Lord is expected to co-labour with Him for the salvation of the human race. Many folk have been chosen for various things from corporal to sergeant, from ordinary man to Premier...

1 Peter 2:9: But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Matthew 5:14: Ye are the light of the world.

Isaiah 43:10: Ye [are] my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen.

2 Corinthians 5:12: Now then we are ambassadors for Christ.

From ordinary to extraordinary! From common to holy! We are chosen to become God’s visual aid. His letter to mankind. He places us on stage as “Exhibit A”.

Gospel Workers, pp. 13 & 26: In every period of this earth's history, God has had His men of opportunity, to whom He has said, “Ye are my witnesses.” Since His ascension, Christ the great head of the church, has carried forward His work in the world by chosen ambassadors, through whom He speaks to the children of men, and ministers to their needs. The position of those who have been called of God to labour in word and doctrine for the upbuilding of His church, is one of grave responsibility. In Christ's stead, they are to beseech men and women to be reconciled to God; and they can fulfil their mission only as they receive wisdom and power from above. There can be no harvest without seed-sowing, no result without effort. So today, God's servants are to go where He calls, trusting Him to guide them and to give them success in their work.

Q7: HOW DOES GOD CHOOSE THOSE FOR HIS SERVICE?

14

Page 4: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, p. 144: In choosing men and women for His service, God does not ask whether they possess learning or eloquence or worldly wealth. He asks: “Do they walk in such humility that I can teach them my way? Can I put My words into their lips? Will they represent me?

Q8/9: HOW DOES GOD WORK IN AND WITH US TO MAKE US SUCCESSFUL IN HIS SERVICE? HOW CAN WE CO-OPERATE WITH HIM?

Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 146: It is not the capabilities you now possess, or ever will, that will give you success. It is that which the Lord can do for you...He longs to have you reach after Him by faith. He longs to have you expect great things from Him. He longs to give you understanding in temporal as well as spiritual matters. He can sharpen the intellect. He can give tact and skill. Put your talents into the work, ask God for wisdom, and it will be given you.

Desire of Ages, p. 668: It was heart work with Christ. And if we consent, He will so identify Himself with our thoughts and aims, so blend our hearts and minds into conformity to His will, that when obeying Him we shall be but carrying out our own impulses.

Selected Messages, Book 1, p. 382: When it is in the heart to obey God, when efforts are put forth to this end, Jesus accepts this disposition and effort as man's best service, and He makes up for the deficiency with His own divine merit.

Matthew 26:40: Jesus said, “nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

Q10: WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO CO-OPERATE WITH GOD?

James 1:5-7: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Q11: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SURRENDER OURSELVES TO CHRIST?

Desire of Ages, p. 324: When the soul surrenders itself to Christ, a new power takes possession of the new heart. A change is wrought which man can never accomplish for himself. It is a supernatural work, bringing a supernatural element into human nature. The soul that is yielded to Christ becomes His own fortress, which He holds in a revolted world, and He intends that no authority shall be known in it but His own. A soul thus kept in possession by the heavenly agencies is impregnable to the assaults of Satan. But unless we do yield ourselves to the control of Christ, we shall be dominated by the wicked one.

Steps to Christ, p. 47: What you need to understand is the true force of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice God has given to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot of yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Him your will; He will then work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure. Thus your whole nature will be brought under the control of the Spirit of Christ; your affections will be centered upon Him, your thoughts will be in harmony with Him.

If we put our wills on God’s side, he will put His power on our side. Then we will have will power to do His will. Is this a Ripley story? Are these “cunningly devised fables?”

Q12: WHAT IS FAITH AND HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO OUR CHRISTIAN WALK?

Romans 10:17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Matthew 4:4: But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Romans 1:17: For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

1 John 5:4: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

2 Corinthians 5:7: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:).

Hebrews 11:6: But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

Philippians 2:12, 13: Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure. Salvation is not of works but it must be worked out. We must not be intimidated by a beaten foe. We must take God at his word! The principles of the Word of God can be lived out - natural and normal!

Q13: WHAT IS AN EXCELLENT OBJECT LESSON OF FAITH FROM THE BIBLE?

Matthew 8:5-10: And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Q14: WHAT IS THE LIFE OF FAITH LIKE?

My Life Today, p. 313: When souls are converted their salvation is not yet accomplished. They then have the race to run; the arduous struggle is before them to do, what? “To fight the good fight of faith,” to press forward to the mark for the prize of the high calling which is in Christ Jesus. There is no release in this battle is lifelong, andmust be carried forward with determined energy proportionate warfare; the to the value of the object you are in pursuit of, which is eternal life. IT’S A MIND GAME!

THE MISSION

Q15: WHEN JESUS WAS ABOUT TO ASCEND TO HIS FATHER, WHAT WERE HIS PARTING WORDS?

Matthew 28:18-20: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

Q16: HAS JESUS CHANGED HIS PROMISE TO MANKIND?

Malachi 3:6: For I [am] the LORD, I change not.

Hebrews 13:8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

Acts of the Apostles, p. 50: The lapse of time has wrought no change in Christ's parting promise to send the Holy Spirit as His representative. It is not because of any restriction on the part of God that the riches of His grace do not flow earthward to men. If the fulfilment of the promise is not seen as it might be, it is because the promise is not appreciated as it should be. If all were willing, all would be filled with the Spirit.

Q17: WHO WAS ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE WORK OF THE DISCIPLES?

Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 16: Christ made full provision for the prosecution of the work entrusted to the disciples, and took upon Himself the responsibility of its success. So long as they obeyed His word, and worked in connection with Him, they could not fail.

Q18: WILL JESUS WORK WITH US IN THE SAME WAY? IF SO, WHEN?

Evangelism, p. 697: When we bring our hearts into unity with Christ, and our lives into harmony with His work, the Spirit that fell on the disciples on the day of Pentecost will fall on us.

Desire of Ages, p. 825: It is in doing Christ's work that the church has the promise of His presence. Go teach all nations, He said; "and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." To take His yoke is one of the first conditions of receiving His power. The very life of the church depends upon her faithfulness in fulfilling the Lord's commission. To neglect this work is surely to invite spiritual feebleness and decay. Where there is no active labour for others, love wanes, and faith grows dim.

Q19: HOW SHOULD THE GOSPEL BE PRESENTED AND HOW SHOULD WE PRESENT OURSELVES?

Desire of Ages, p. 826: The gospel is to be presented, not as a lifeless theory, but as a living force to change the life. God desires that the receivers of His grace shall be witnesses to its power.

Education, p. 18: Higher than the highest human thought can reach is God's ideal for His children. Godliness--godlikeness--is the goal to be reached. Remember that “talents used are talents multiplied” and that “if we use our means for His glory, He will give us

17

more” (Christ’s Object Lessons, pp. 353, 354). Also, we should not be satisfied with conquest in part. We cannot be satisfied with crumbs when Jesus has set a banquet table for us!

ATTITUDE AND DISPOSITION

Your attitude determines your altitude!

Q20: WHAT SHOULD OUR ATTITUDE BE WHILE ON THE BATTLE FIELD FOR OUR LORD?

Education, p. 57: The greatest want of the world is the want of men-men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.

Ministry of Healing, p. 497-498: While they are to give the soft answer that turns away wrath, they must possess the courage of a hero to resist evil. With the charity that endures all things, they need the force of character that will make their influence a positive power.

Desire of Ages, p. 679: Christ did not fail, neither was He discouraged, and His followers are to manifest a faith of the same enduring nature. Despair of nothing and hope for everything. Jesus was not moved by censure nor by applause.

Q21: WHAT IS YOUR ATTITUDE AND DISPOSITION TO BE WHEN TRIALS COME?

Acts of the Apostles, p. 524: Trial is part of the education given in the school of Christ, to purify God's children from the dross of earthliness. It is because God is leading His children that trying experiences come to them. Trials and obstacles are His chosen methods of discipline, and His appointed conditions of success.

THE METHOD

Q22: WHICH BIBLE PASSAGE CLEARLY SHOWS CHRIST’S METHOD IN REACHING PEOPLE?

John 4:4-19: And he must needs go through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou

18

Page 8: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

Q23: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE JESUS’ METHOD IN DETAIL?

Bible Commentary, [John 4:7]: The process of winning the woman of Samaria deserves the most careful study on the part of all who set out to win others to Christ. There were four main stages in this process: (1) The awakening of a desire for something better, vs. 7–15. (2) The awakening of a conviction of personal need, vs. 16–20. (3) The call for a decision to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah, vs. 21–26. (4) The stimulus to action appropriate to the decision, vs. 28–30, 39–42. Jesus gained the woman’s attention with the request, “Give me to drink.” Her response is evident in the question of v. 9, “How is it …?” Having thus secured her undivided attention, Jesus aroused her interest by the offer of “living water” (v. 10). Her reaction appears in the question as to “whence” He obtained such water (v. 11) and whether He professed to be “greater” than Jacob, who had dug the well (v. 12). From attention and interest, Jesus led her on to desire the “living water,” declaring that those who drink it will “never thirst” (v. 14). She responded with the request, “Sir, give me this water” (v. 15), even though she had little conception, as yet, of what she was asking for.

Ministry of Healing, p. 143: Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, “Follow Me”. . . .

There is need of coming close to the people by personal effort. . . .The poor are to be relieved, the sick cared for, the sorrowing and the bereaved comforted, the ignorant instructed, the inexperienced counselled. We are to weep with those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice. Accompanied by the power of persuasion, the power of prayer, the power of the love of God, this work will not, cannot, be without fruit.

Q24: WHY DO MOST PEOPLE MINGLE WITH EACH OTHER AND WHAT IS THE USUAL REACTION?

People mingle with each other for all kinds of reasons. Often they do so with some ulterior motives rather than altruistic ones. Because so many have been manipulated, used, and exploited by others, we can understand why, when we mingle with them, they assume that we are after something. Isn’t this the reason that we hear them probing with such familiar questions as “What is in this for you?” “What are you really after?” “What do you want?” “What is the catch?” “What are you selling?” Such questions betray how wary people have become about being used – Christ’s Way of Reaching People, p. 45.

Q25: WHAT SHOULD BE OUR MOTIVE FOR REACHING OUT TO PEOPLE?

19

Page 9: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Christ reached out to people for their own sake–simply because He loved them and because they had a need which He could fill! His motive was disinterested benevolence. Let’s reveal God’s character by precept and example. “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day. I’d rather you just don’t tell me, show me the way.” Love makes, maintains and upholds all right relationships. Love is the glue!

Q26: WHAT ARE SOME METHODS OF APPLYING JESUS’ METHOD IN OUR CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHERS?

We can use the acronym “FORT” to remember four areas that people like to talk about.

F = FamilyO = OccupationR = ReligionT = Testimony

Keep in mind that all the people you come in contact with wear an unseen button that says, “Show me that you care!” You cannot be pleasing and antagonising at the same time! Finally, never forget the power of a sincere compliment!

II.  THE NEW TESTAMENT CONCEPT OF PERSONAL EVANGELISM             A.  INSTITUTED BY JESUS CHRIST.

               1.  Matthew 4:18,19 - "Follow Me,  and I will make you fishers of men." BIBLICAL TRUTH:  If you are not fishing for men, you are not followingJesus Christ.

    2. Mark 16:15 - "And He (Jesus Christ) said unto them,  Go ye into all the

world and preach the gospel to every creature." BIBLICAL TRUTH:  The good news of Jesus Christ is to be shared with every man,  women,  boy,  and girl.

          B.  PRACTICED BY JESUS CHRIST.

Luke 19:10 - "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost."

                 1.  Zacchaeus - Luke 19:1-10                2.  Nicodemus - John 3:1-21                3.  A Samaritan Women - John 4:1-30

          C.  PRACTICED BY OTHER CHRISTIANS

II Timothy 2:2 - "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses,  the same commit thou to faithful men,  who shall be able to teach others also."

               1.  Andrew Led His Brother (Peter) to the Lord - John 1:40-42              2.  Philip Led the Ethiopian Man to the Lord - Acts 8:26-39              3.  Paul Led the Prison Jailor to the Lord - Acts 16:25-32

          D.  LIFE-STYLE EVANGELISM

Life-Style Evangelism is being sensitive to God's direction and being prepared to share a witness for Christ with anyone,  anywhere,  at anytime.

New Testament Evangelism is communicating the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and arose from the dead with the intent of leading the unsaved to faith in Christ,  and with the ultimate intent of instructing the convert in the Word of God so that he can become a mature believer.

Evangelism in the New Testament did not just present the facts of the gospel.  The first century Christians presented the facts of the gospel in order to secure a decision for Christ.

We must inform and invite.  Personal Evangelism is communicating the gospel and inviting the hearer to trust in Christ alone for eternal life.     The most effective method of evangelism is "one - on - one" (personal) evangelism.  Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with one person at a time.  This is personal evangelism.   Seventy-five to ninety percent of the people being saved are the result of a friend or acquaintance sharing the gospel  "one on one."   Only seventeen percent of new conversions come through attending a church or revival service.

               1.  Everyone Evangelizing.

a.  Acts 8:4 - "And they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word."   The word translated "preaching" is the Greek word,  euaggelizo which means evangelizing.  They were proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ with anyone,  anywhere,  at anytime!

b.  Acts 8:1 - "And Saul (who later became known as the Apostle Paul)  was consenting unto (Stephen's) death.  And at that time there was a great persecution against the Church which was at Jerusalem;  and they were all scattered abroad through out the regions of Judea and Samaria,  except the Apostles."

Who were "They" in verse 4?  The church leaders did their share of personal evangelism.   The point here is that it was the fleeing Christians that were spreading the gospel to the people of these other cities!

               2.  Everyone Evangelizing and Working Together.

Ephesians 4:11,12 - "And He gave some,  apostles;  and some,  prophets;  and some,  evangelists;  and some,  (pastor-teachers);  For the perfecting of the saints;  for the work of the ministry,  for the edifying of the body of Christ."

=  Every Member is a Minister

Page 11: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

All parts of the body of Christ - functions together to evangelize the world.

               3.  Everyone Evangelizing and Developing Disciples.

Matthew 28:19,20 - "GO ye therefore,  and TEACH all nations,  BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father,  and the Son,  and of the Holy Spirit:  TEACHING them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you;  and,  lo,  I am with you always,  even unto the end of the age."

Many translations of the Bible make it sound as though there are two commands,  "to go" and "to teach."  The Greek text,  however,  has only one command,  "To make disciples."     The main verb,  "to  make disciples"  tells what is to be done,  and the three participles,  "going,  baptizing,  and teaching"  tells how it is to be done.

a.  The word "teach" is the main verb in the text.  It comes from the Greek word,  Matheteuo,  which means "to instruct with the purpose on making disciples".  The basic meaning of "disciple" is a pupil who learns and follows a teacher.  A disciple of Christ is a believer who does that and more.  He not only learns and is teachable,  but his attachment and love for the Lord causes him to follow the Lord in doctrine and conduct of life.

  b.  The word "go" in the passage is a participle and coveys not a command to go,  but the assumption that the followers of Christ are automatically proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ with anyone,  anywhere,  at anytime.

c.  The word "baptize" is the Greek word,  Baptizo.  This means "to immerse,  submerge for a religious purpose,  to saturate."  In the New Testament the believing sinner was baptized as a testimony of his new identification with Christ and the church.  When a person hears the message about Jesus Christ  and trusts Him as Savior,  he has eternal life (John 3:36).  Then he is to be baptized.  That is always the  order in the book of Acts:  hear,  believe,  and be baptized.

d.  The word "teaching" is the Greek word,  Didasko.  This means to instruct by word of mouth.  Personal instruction is given to the new believer so he can be obedient to Christ as he grows in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

            E.  THE THREEFOLD PROCESS OF DISCIPLE-MAKING:

1. EVANGELIZING - We must inform and invite others to  trust in Christ alone for eternal life.

               2.  BAPTIZING - Believer's baptism and church membership.  2. TEACHING -  Instruct the new believer in the commands of Christ.

Eternal Life is free.  Discipleship is taking our new life to the next level of spiritual growth and maturity.

"Dr. M. R. DeHaan (founder, Radio Bible Class) realized the importance of keeping salvation and service separate and said so well:  "There is a vast difference between coming to Jesus for salvation and coming after Jesus for service. Coming to Christ makes one a believer, while coming after Christ makes one a disciple. All believers are not disciples. To become a believer one accepts the invitation of the Gospel. To be a disciple one obeys the challenge of a life of dedicated service and separation. Salvation comes through the sacrifice of Christ,  but discipleship comes only by sacrifice of self and surrender to His call for devoted service. Salvation is free, but discipleship involves paying the price of a separated walk. Salvation cannot be lost, because it depends upon God's faithfulness, but discipleship can be lost, because it depends upon our faithfulness."  (HANDBOOK OF PERSONAL EVANGELISM - Dr. A. Ray Stanford - page 91).

III.  OUR WITNESS FOR CHRIST

          A.  WHY SHOULD WE WITNESS?

               1.  Witnessing Glorifies God  (John 15:8).

Our purpose for living is to glorify God.  He alone deserves our praise,  worship,  and service.  Sharing the gospel brings glory to the Lord.

2.  The Need is Real (Luke 16:23-26; John 3:18,36; 1thes. 1:8,9).

God is real.  Heaven is real,  and Hell is real.  People die every day condemned to eternity in Hell because they have not trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

                 3.  God Commands Us to be His Witness  (Mark 16:16).

We Witness because the Lord has told us to do it.

               4.  It is Our Privilege to Share the Gospel  (1 Thes. 2:4).

God could have chosen angels to carry the message of salvation,  but He didn't.  He gave every Christian the privilege and responsibility to be a carrier of the gospel.  There is no greater joy than to be used of God in leading a person to Christ.

            B.  WHY DON'T WE WITNESS?

The reason is fear and not knowing how to share your faith to others. Fear does more to hinder our witness than any other thing. Learning to witness will help you overcome your fear in evangelism.

               1.  Fear Is Normal in Evangelism.                       a.  Paul admits to experiencing fear - I Corinthians 2:3.                     b.  Peter and John had fear in evangelism - Acts 4.                  2.  You Can Overcome Fear in Evangelism.

23

Page 13: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

a. Pray To God About Your Fear To Witness.                          1).  Pray for God's power - Acts 1:8.                          2).  Pray for Boldness - Ephesians 6:18-20.

b. Learn How to Share Your Faith.  The Facts presentation will help in a great way to lessen your fear in evangelism.

c. Focus on the Needs of Others. d. Concentrate on the Message of the Gospel. e. Think about the Privilege of Being God's Ambassador. f. Be a Witness for Christ.  Obeying God Must Have Preeminence Over

Obeying Our Fears.

            C.  OUR LIFE IS A GREAT PART OF OUR WITNESS

Acts 1:8 -"But ye shall receive power,  after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you:  and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem,  and in all Judea,  and in Samaria,  and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

               1.  The Words We Speak.

I Thessalonians 2:4 - "But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak;  not as pleasing men,  but God,  which trieth our hearts."

Romans 1:16 - "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:  for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;  to the Jew first,  and also to the (Gentiles)."

               2.  The Testimony We Live.

II Corinthians 3:2,3 - "Ye are our epistle written in your hearts,  known and read of all men:  for as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us,  written not with ink,  but with the Spirit of the living God;  not in tables of stone,  but fleshy tables of the heart."

II Corinthians 6:3 - "Give no offense in any thing,  that the ministry be not blamed:  But in all things approving ourselves as the minister of God..."

          D.  OUR MESSAGE IS A GREAT PART OF OUR WITNESS

               1.  Keep it Simple.

I Corinthians 2:1,2 - "And I,  brethren,  when I came to you,  came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom,  declaring unto you the testimony of God,  For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ,  and Him crucified."

II Corinthians 3:12 - "Seeing then that we have such hope,  we use great plainness of speech."

               2.  Keep it Clear.

Colossians 4:3,4 - "...Praying also for us,  that God would open unto us a

24

Page 14: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

door of utterance,  to speak the mystery of Christ,  for which I am also in bonds:  That I may make it manifest (clear),  as I ought to speak."

               3.  Keep it Biblical.

The Greek word translated "gospel" (euangelion) is a compound word,  composed of (eu),  which means "good,"  and (angelos),  meaning "message."  Together they form the word euangelion,  literally meaning "good Message"  or "good News."

I Corinthians 15:3-5 - "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received,  how that Christ DIED for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that He was BURIED,  and that He ROSE again the third day according to the scriptures:  And that He was SEEN..."

a.  This is the one place where the historical elements of the gospel are clearly defined.  Our responsibility is to make the gospel clear and Biblical.  But in order to do so,  we must have a clear understanding of what the gospel means in the New Testament.

b.  The Apostles Paul in defining the gospel uses four verbs:

1).  Christ Died. I Corinthians 15:3 - "...Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures (Biblical proof that He died)."

Christ died as our substitute.  He died in our place.  He took our punishment.  He died for our sins.   That He died for our sins implies that we are sinners in need of forgiveness.  The word "for" (hyper) conveys the idea of "on account of,"  i.e.,  to deal with our sins.   Isaiah 53:5 - The Prophet Isaiah,  seven hundred years before Christ,  prophesied,  "He was wounded for our transgressions,  He was bruised for our iniquities."   Psalms 22:16 - David wrote of the Messiah,  "...they pierced my hands and my feet"  about a thousand years before the Romans used the cross as the means of execution of the Lord Jesus Christ.

2).  Christ was Buried. This is physical proof that He died.  This statement functions as Jesus' death certificate.  Only dead men are buried.

3).  Christ Rose. I Corinthians 15:4 - "...He rose again the third day according to the scriptures  (Biblical proof of the resurrection)".   He arose attests to Christ's resurrection from the dead,  which implies that God accepted the sacrifice.  A dead man cannot save anyone.  A Savior has to be alive.  Only then can He offer and effect salvation.

25

Page 15: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Romans  4:25 - "Who was delivered for our offenses,  and was raised again for our justification".

This is the second time Paul used the phrase "according to the scriptures."  He wants us to know that,  just as the death of Christ was not a surprise,  neither was His resurrection.

When the suffering and death of the Messiah is discussed,  this is often followed by a declaration of His reign (Isaiah 53)   Psalms 16:10 -  David predicted the resurrection of the Messiah (Christ) when he said,  "For you will not leave my soul in hell (Sheol),  neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption."

4).  Christ was Seen. This is physical proof of the resurrection.  There were many eyewitnesses of the risen Christ.

BIBLICAL TRUTH:  The gospel by which we are saved (What people are asked to believe)  is that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead.  The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the emphasis of our message.  Jesus Christ,  the God/man has removed the barrier of sin.  His death paid the penalty for our sins and His resurrection made eternal life possible to those who put their trust in Christ.

"Faith Alone in Christ Alone,  because Jesus Christ is Lord!"

  c.  The Apostle Paul gives a warning to make sure that the gospel we preach is the same gospel as He preached.

Galatians 1:6-10 - "I (Paul) marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:  Which is not another;  but there be some that trouble you,  and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an angel from heaven,  preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you,  let him be accursed.  As we said before,  so say I now again,  If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received,  let him be accursed.  For do I now persuade men,  or God?  or do I seek to please men?  for if I yet please men,  I should not be the servant of Christ."

          E.  We must be ready to offer more than tidbits of the truth.                                  1.  We Can't Just Say:

a. "God loves you" - That Biblical truth alone does not save anyone. b. "I will pray for you" - Praying alone is not enough.

We must be prepared to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Our responsibility is to share the gospel message and the Lord will give the increase.

  2. It is Amazing What Unbelievers are Told to do in Order to be

Saved:

                    a.  "Give your heart to Jesus"

26

Page 16: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

                    b.  "Ask Jesus into your heart"                     c.  "Commit your life to Christ"                     d.  "Join ________ ________ Church"                       e.  "Make Jesus Lord and Master of your life"                     f.  "Believe in God"                    g.  "Obey the Ten Commandments"                    h.  "Surrender Your Life to Christ"     There is not a verse in the Bible that tells people to do the above in order to be saved.   The question:  "What must I do to be saved?"  is a simple question with a simple answer.   Satan has blinded many into falling for the lie that the answer is more complex.   In Acts 16:30-31 the Bible records the question  with the correct answer.  "...What must I do to be saved?  And they said,  Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved..."

IV.  HOW DO I START WITNESSING?

          A.  THE APPROACH

All that proceeds the Gospel Facts presentation.     Look for opportunities to give sincere compliments.  Be alert to God's leading.  He will open you a door to share the gospel.

               1.  Gain "Favorable" Attention                                          a.  Be Friendly.                     b.  Be Pleasant.                     c.  Be Gracious.                     d.  Be Real.

"If the Lord leads you to start witnessing 'cold,  right off the bat'  to someone you have never met - fine.  Do it.  However,  you will usually find the person more receptive to the gospel if you can first talk with him about something he is already interested in.  Sometimes you will take as long as half an hour or more in doing this;  other times you can do it in a very few minutes.  Each person and situation will be different,  and the Lord will lead you as you go about 'preparing the way' for a good presentation of the gospel.   We are not suggesting you 'beat around the bush'  when you witness.  Not at all.  But you will find that if first you speak to the person in terms of what interests HIM,  he will be more disposed to listen when you speak about what interests YOU" (HANDBOOK OF PERSONAL EVANGELISM - Dr. A Ray Stanford - page 62).

                 2.  Build Personal Relationships - Ask questions to learn about the

individual your witnessing too.

                    a.  His Family.                     b.  His Interest.

27

Page 17: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

                    c.  His Hobbies.                     d.  His Occupation.                     e.  His Religious Background.

               3.  You are Earning the Right to be Heard.

You are asking questions that move to the core of his life.  Asked questions,  then be quiet and listen.

               4.  Demonstrate Christian Love by Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.

          B.  THE METHOD

SHARING CHRIST USING THE FACTS TRACT

Am I Going To Heaven?

The Facts Tract offers a unique opportunity in a witnessing experience.  It is easy to use and it is proven effective as a conversation opener,  because of its title,  "Am I Going To Heaven?"

Simply give out the tract and say,  "Let me give you something good to read.  I think you will find it interesting."

When people receive this tract, they almost always make a comment about it.  Many say something like:

"What is this?""Not me, I wish"

"Not me, I'll never make it to Heaven."

Do you know what just happen, when the person makes a comment after receiving the tract?  You now have an opportunity to present the plan of salvation.

You are now ready to see the power of God in action.

Romans 1:16 - "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:  for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth: to the Jew first,  and also to the Greek."

Now,  ask the two Exploratory Questions and  - wait for their answer before you share the rest of the facts presentation.

            C.  THE EXPLORATORY QUESTIONS:                     1.  The Certainty Question:

"If you died today, do you know for sure you would go to Heaven?"    (W.F.A. = Wait For Answer)

28

Page 18: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

               2.  The Why Question:

"Let me ask you another question. Suppose you were to stand before God and He asked you,  'Why should I let you into Heaven'?   What would you say?" (W.F.A.)

                    a.  The questions are a diagnostic tool.                     b. You are finding out two things:

1).  Does he have eternal life?                          2).  What is he trusting to get to Heaven?

          D.  THE FOUR POSSIBLE ANSWERS - TO THE EXPLORATORY QUESTIONS:

               1.  Correct Answer to Both Questions.

Probably a Christian. Share other aspects of the Christian life and tell about your Church.  Is he active in a good local Church?  Is he growing in his Christian life?

               2.  Incorrect Answer to Both Questions.

Probably not a Christian. Share the entire Gospel Facts presentation.

               3.  Correct Answer to the First Question.  Incorrect Answer to the Second Question.

Probably not a Christian, if he is trusting in works to get him to Heaven.

Share the entire Gospel Facts presentation.  Principles #1 and #2 are needed to show that we can not work our way to God.

               4.  Incorrect Answer to the First Question.  Correct Answer to the Second Question.

Probably a Christian who lacks assurance of salvation. Share the entire Gospel Facts presentation.  Principles #4 and #5 are needed for assurance of eternal life.

            E.   THREE WAYS TO ANSWER - THE CERTAINTY QUESTION:                  1.  "Yes"

Don't assume they have eternal life.  Ask the "why" question and listen to their answer.

                 2.  "No"

Ask the "why" question and listen to their answer.

               3.  "I Hope So"

29

Page 19: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

This is the answer most will give you.   Ask the "why" question and listen to their answer.

            F.  TWO WAYS TO ANSWER - THE WHY QUESTION:

               1.  The Wrong Answer:

What "I" have done  =  Salvation by works.   If you can relate to a wrong answer say,  "I used to believe the same thing about going to Heaven,  until someone showed me what the Bible said about it."   Ask the permission question and wait for their response to the question.

               2.  The Right Answer:

What "Christ" has done  =  Salvation by grace.

It is all about grace.  God's amazing grace.

"Faith Alone in Christ Alone!"

          G.  THE PERMISSION QUESTION:

If the person is not sure of going to Heaven when he dies,  ask the permission question.  A "yes" to this question gives you the opportunity to see the power of God in action!

               1.  The Permission Question:

"Would you like to know what the Bible says about going to Heaven?"    (W.F.A.)

               2.  There are Three Answers to the Permission Question:                       a.  "Yes" - Share the Gospel Facts presentation.                     b.  "No" - Be patient and don't force the gospel on anyone.                      c.  "Not Now" - Be patient and ready to share at another time and place.

          H.  THE FACTS TRACT - Am I Going To Heaven?

A gospel tract is the most effective tool that I know to share Christ.  It is a door opener.

The Facts Tract offers a simple, clear, and flexible method for presenting the gospel.  Familiarize yourself with the layout of the tract.  The five principles that you will share are printed on the tract.  The Bible verses are there too!

There is not a lot of memorization.  Simply share the tract,  one principle at a time.

HELPFUL THINGS TO REMEMBER USING THE FACTS TRACT

1. Position yourself beside the person to allow them to see the tract.2. Fold the tract to allow seeing one page at a time.3. Use your finger to help the person follow as you explain the message on the

tract. 4. Keep eye contact.  This establishes honesty on your part.5. Ask questions to get the person involved and interested in the gospel.6. Be careful in asking people to read from a tract.  Not every one is

comfortable with  reading to others.  7.  Use illustrations as you share the gospel.  They are very valuable in making

your points clear and understandable.  It will help you keep your message interesting.

  8.  Share the entire Facts presentation.  9.  Focus on the positive.10. Be Discerning.  Do Not Force the gospel on anyone,  anywhere, at anytime.11.  Do not embarrass people.  Deal with the individual alone whenever possible.12.  Don't argue.  Your responsibility is to provide information,  not win a debate.13.  Do not be sidetracked by false issues.  Stick to the subject!14. Once the person understands the point you are making,  move on to the

next point.15.  Lead the person to put their trust in Christ alone for salvation.16.  Be positive if the person doesn't receive Christ.17.  Win Them or Warn Them.18.  Always leave the tract with the person for them to read again later.

Our responsibility is to witness.  Leave the results to God.

"Evangelism is a learning experience.  Each time we share Christ with someone we are that much wiser how to do it.  Instead of looking at it as a learning experience,  we sometimes classify each incident as a success or a failure.  The differentiation we feel is very clear - successes are those times when we lead others to Christ and failures are those times when we don't.

The problem is self-created and unbiblical.  First of all,  God is responsible for results.  A verse believers ought to have firmly planted in their minds as they evangelize is the one I keep going back to:  John 6:44 - "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him."

Referring to the results in spiritual ministry,  Paul the apostle testified,  "Who then is Paul,  and who is Apollos,  but ministers through whom you believed,  as the Lord gave to each one?  I planted.  Apollos watered,  but God gave the increase.  So then neither he who plants is anything,  nor he who waters,  but God who gives the increase" (I Cor.3:5-7).

God is clearly in control.  With this in mind,  He uses us in different ways with different people.  We may be the one who gets a non-Christian thinking about spiritual things,  the one who continues her thinking,  the one who leads her to Christ,  or the one who helps at any point alone that line.  Jesus' comforting words in evangelism were,  "One sows and another reaps" (John 4:37)."  (PERSONAL EVANGELISM - Dr. R. Larry Moyer - pages 85-86).

31

Page 21: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Surveys tell us that most people do not trust Christ after the first encounter with the gospel.  It sometimes  takes a person four or five  times to hear the gospel before they trust in Christ as their personal Savior.

So,  if anyone walks away from you after you share the Facts presentation,  remember,  "The word of God never returns void."   It may have been the third time the person heard the Gospel.  Your obedience to share may bring the person to a turning point.  That would be great.  You have obeyed  the command of Christ.  You just planted a seed for Christ.

It may be the fourth time and the person believes in Christ.

No one knows how many times it will take hearing the gospel before a person will understand and trust Christ.  But, if you will be faithful in your witness - you will be amazed of the ones the Lord brings in your path that are ready!

The Bible tells us that all of Heaven rejoices when a person is saved.  Go ahead and share your faith and get ready to get happy.  There is no greater joy than to be used of God in leading someone to Christ.

Our responsibility is to inform and invite others to trust in Christ alone for eternal life.  Leave the results to God.   You do your part and God will give you fruit.

Trust Him and see!

V. THE GOSPEL FACTS PRESENTATION

     FREENESS OF HEAVEN

          A.  BEGIN WITH GOOD NEWS

Eternal Life is God's free gift to the world.

               1.  We are Continuing with the Theme of Heaven, Eternal Life,  and Salvation.

               2.  Emphasize the Grace and Mercy of God.

Romans 3:24 - "Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."

Romans 6:23 - "...The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Ephesians 2:8,9 - "For by grace are ye saved through faith;  and that not of yourselves:  It is the gift of God:  not of works,  lest any man should boast."

32

Page 22: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Salvation is by "grace".  Grace means unmerited or undeserved favor.   It is not earned or deserved in any way.

"Saved" means "rescued from the penalty of sin."  The penalty that we have earned because of our sins has already been paid for us by Jesus' death on the cross.

Salvation (eternal life) is accessed by "faith."   Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  It is believing in Jesus Christ's sacrificial death on the cross for our sins.  God the Father poured the sins of the whole world on His Son,  and punished the Lord Jesus for what we have done.  He died in our place,  so we could receive His righteousness and eternal life when we trust Him to save us.

Salvation through faith is "not of yourselves."  There is nothing that we can do to work for it.  There is nothing we can offer God,  that can make us deserving of salvation.

Salvation is a "gift of God" to you.   It is not based on our performance of any tasks or good deeds or work.  You simply receive it.  It is free.  You receive it by trusting in Christ.

Salvation is "not of works."  It is not base on us working for it.  It is base on what Jesus Christ has done for us.

Salvation by faith alone means that "no one should boast."  The Lord gets all the glory because He is the One who did all of the work.

           B.  FOR A PERSON TO BE SAVED, YOU WILL HAVE TO HELP HIM SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORKS AND GRACE.

               1.  This Becomes the Greatest Task That You Will Face.               2.  The Main Issue will Always be GRACE VS WORKS for Salvation.

THE PROBLEM IS PUTTING THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE!

Romans 11:16 - "And if by grace then is it no more works:  otherwise grace is no more grace.  But if it be of works,  then is it no more grace:  otherwise work is no more  work.

"GOOD WORKS FOR SALVATION IS SATAN'S COUNTERFEIT OF GOD'S GRACE FOR SALVATION.  THIS ISSUE OF 'GRACE VERSUS WORKS' WILL ALMOST ALWAYS BE THE MAIN THING YOU WILL NEED TO DEAL WITH" (HANDBOOK OF PERSONAL EVANGELISM - Dr. A. Ray Stanford - page 18).

It is all about grace.  To add one condition to salvation will make it salvation by works.

"Salvation By Works Will Not Work!"

The Bible is clear that it is by grace through faith in the work of Christ on the cross.  No amount of money could buy you eternal life.  There is not a thing you

33

Page 23: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

could do to earn it.  The price for our salvation is to great for us to have a part in it.  God did it all for us.

The Lord of Lords left Heaven and all it's glory to become a man.  Lived a perfect/sinless life with the purpose of going to the cross to die.   He died for you and me.  He died in our place.  He became sin for us.  He paid the price so we can have eternal life.  Don't insult  Him by trying to help by your "good" works.

Salvation is never based on who and what we are,  or what we have done to try to earn it.  Salvation is based on who and what Jesus Christ is,  and what He did for us!

Trust Christ and Christ alone.  It is all about grace.  God's amazing grace.

          C.  MAN'S WAY TO RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE  =  WORKS FOR SALVATION -  (What "I" have done)

D. GOD'S WAY TO RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE = GOD'S AMAZING GRACE -  (What "Christ" Has Done)

John 14:6 - "Jesus saith unto him,  I am the way,  the truth,  and the life,  and the life;  NO MAN cometh unto the Father,  but by Me."

"Faith Alone In Christ Alone!"

"If anything is clear in Scripture,  it is that man is saved by his faith in Christ's payment for all sin on the cross plus nothing.  Man's efforts,  no matter how good or well intended (before or after salvation),  have nothing to do with it.  Salvation is by the finished work of Christ and nothing can be added to it.

Religions are man made.  Two Latin words make up our English word "religion,"  "re" and "ligio."  "Re" means to "go back."  and "ligio"  means "to Bind."  Religion then means "to bind back."  Religions are man's efforts to bind himself back to God.  They are Satan inspired.  Satan delights to blind man into thinking he could somehow earn eternal life through his good works.

II Corinthians 11:14-15 - "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an Angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness...".

People have Satan picture as having horns, tail,  pitchfork,  and red union suit.  Satan doesn't want people to know what he is really like.

The plan of salvation is not a religion but is the message of what God has already done to bring us back to Him.  Satan gives the lost a religion that,  when he hears it,  will blind him to salvation.  When you witness,  always point out that the GOSPEL is NOT a "religion."  We are not discussing man's philosophy but God's Word" - (HANDBOOK OF PERSONAL EVANGELISM - Dr. A. Ray Stanford - page 17).

GRACE - God giving to us what we do not deserve.

Ephesians 2:8,9 - "For by GRACE are ye saved through faith;  and that not of yourselves;  it is the gift of God,  not of works lest any man should boast."

MERCY - God withholding from us what we do deserve.

Titus 3:5 - "not by works of righteousness which we have done,  but according to His MERCY He saved us..."

"We Are Saved by Believing,  Not by Achieving!"

          E.  PRESENTATION:  Principle # 1 - Freeness Of Heaven

The way to overcome the false teaching that man needs to do good works for salvation is to present clear salvation verses.

              1.  Use Your Testimony (What you used to believe would get you to Heaven)  as you share the first section on the Facts Tract.

               2.  THE GIFT ILLUSTRATION - Ephesians 2:8,9

"What if I gave you fifty dollars and said, 'go and wash my car'.  Would that be a gift? (W.F.A.)   -  No

"Your right.  That would be something you earned.  It is the same way with eternal life.  The Bible says eternal life is a gift from God to you.  There is not one thing that we can do to earn it.  God gives it to us as a free gift because He loves us.

AWFULNESS OF SIN

          A.  WE MUST TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT SIN.

Sin separates us from God.   Modern man has been brainwashed into thinking his problem is not himself.  It is his parents,   friends,  or the way he was treated as a child.  It is not inside him,  but outside.  If that were the case,  man would be without hope,  for there would be no solution.  But when he sees the problem is sin,  then there is hope,  for that problem can be solved,  and that is good news.

        B.  THE UNBELIEVER MUST UNDERSTAND THAT HE IS A SINNER AND DESERVES TO SPEND ETERNITY IN HELL,  because the Bible says,  "...  we have all sinned ... and ... the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 3:23 and 6:23).

1. Our Responsibility is not to "Convict" the Unbeliever of His Sins.  It is to share the plan of salvation.

2. The Holy Spirit is the One Who Convicts.  The Holy Spirit convicts the unbeliever of their sin of unbelief,  the need for righteousness and coming judgment (John 16:7-11).

36

Page 26: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

3. Never Make "Sin" the Issue.  The issue is trusting Christ alone for eternal life.

John 3:18 - "He that believeth on Him (Christ) is not condemned,  but he that believeth not is condemned already,  because he hath not believe in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

               4.  Be Careful How You Point Out the Person as a Sinner.  Admit you are, and he will be much more willing to admit he is. An effective statement is, "God says everyone is a sinner -- I am, you are,  we all are.

          C.  WHAT IS SIN?

The New Testament employs at least a dozen words to describes sin.  Two words in the Greek New Testament that define "sin" is Hamartano and Parabasis.

1.  Hamartano Means - "To Miss the Mark."  We miss the mark of God's perfection.  He is Holy and Just.  Compared to Him, we fall short of His glory.  His ways are not our ways.  He is perfect and we are not.

Sin is anything contrary to the character of God.

               2.  Parabasis Means - "Transgressor, To Over Step a Forbidden Line."  Sin occurs when we deliberately or accidentally step over the line of the law of God.

Sin is anything contrary to the law of God.

ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE,  SIN IS:

Failure to be what God wants us to be.Failure to do what God wants us to do.

           D.  THE ORIGIN OF SIN.

               1.  Began with the Fall of Lucifer (Satan)  (Isaiah 14:12-17). When Lucifer said,  "I will," sin began.

3. Led to the Fall of Man  (Genesis 3:1-7).4. Continues in Every Man  (Romans 5:17).

          E.  THE HUMAN RACE HAS A PROBLEM.

               1.  We Are All Sinners.

Isaiah 53:6 - "All we like sheep have gone astray;  we have turned every one to his own way..."

Romans 3:10 - "As it is written,  there is none righteous,  no,  not one."

                    a.   Sinners at Birth.

37

Page 27: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Imputed Sin - (The Doctrine of Original Sin).

Sin is presented in scripture as imputed or reckoned to our account.

Romans 5:12 - "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world,  and death by sin;  and so death passed upon all men,  for that all have sinned."

Adam's sin was imputed to the whole human race.  In Adam's fall,  we all fell.

Inherent Sin - (The Doctrines of the Old Sin Nature and Total Depravity of Man).

The old sin nature and total depravity of man is another aspect of sin as revealed in God's Word.

Romans 5:19 - "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners,  so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous."

Ephesians 2:3 - "Among whom also we all had our conversation in time past in the lust of the flesh,  fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind;  and were by nature the children of wrath."

When Adam sinned,  his very nature became corrupt;  and thus,  every descendant of Adam inherited a corrupt,  depraved,  sinful nature.  Man is totally depraved.  He has a darkened mind,  deprived emotions,  and a disobedience will.

                    b.  Sinners by Choice.

Individual Sins -  (Personal Sins) - Those sins all people commit,  either intentionally or unintentionally.

Romans 3:23 - "For all have sinned,  and come short of the glory of God."

The essential idea is that man comes short,  he misses the mark,  and fails to attain the standard of God's own character of holiness.

               2.  The Result of Sin is Death - (Death is Separation from God).

Romans 6:23 - "For the wages of sin is death... ."

                    a.  There are Three Deaths mention in the Bible :

                         1).  Spiritual Death - (Isaiah 59:1,2;  Ephesians 2:1,5;  4:18,19).Separation from God.

2).  Physical Death - (Hebrews 9:27;  Romans 5:12-14).Separation of the body.

                         3).  Eternal Death - (Revelation 21:8).

Separation of the body, soul, and spirit from God in a conscious state for eternity in the lake of fire.

                    b.  We all deserve to die and go to Hell because of our sins.

38

Page 28: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

BIBLICAL TRUTHS:God is LoveGod is Holy

God is Merciful, and does not want to punish us,  ButGod is Just, and therefore must punish sin.

Ezekiel 18:4 - "... the soul that sinneth,  it shall die."

II Thessalonians 1:8,9 - "In flaming fire taking vengeance of them that know not God,  and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:  who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord,  and from the glory of His power."

          F.  PRESENTATION:  PRINCIPLE # 2 - Awfulness Of Sin

Be careful how you point out the person is a sinner.

The Bad News is that we all have sin.  Admit that you are,  and he will be more likely to admit he is.  For most people,  a simple statement on this point is sufficient  as,  "God says everyone is a sinner.  I am,  You are,  We all are."

The Bad News gets even worst because the penalty for our sin is death.  "God loves us,  but hates our sin,  because the payment for sin is death and separation from Him".

             1.  THE SIN ILLUSTRATION - (Romans 3:23).

"The word, "sin" in the Bible means to miss the mark.  In other words,  God is perfect and we are not.

Suppose each of us pick up a rock,  and I say to you,  Let's see who can hit the North Pole.  Well,  you might throw farther than I,  or I might throw farther than you,  but neither of us would make it.  Both of us would fall short of our target.

It is the same with God.  He is Holy and Righteous.  It doesn't matter how good we are,  or how hard we try to be good.  We still can not meet His standard because "all of us have sinned,  and come short of His glory."

             2.  THE WAGE ILLUSTRATION - (Romans 6:23a).

"Suppose you were to work for me one day and I pay you one hundred dollars.  One hundred dollars would be your wages.  That's what you earned.

The Bible says that by sinning,  we have earned death.  That means we deserve to die and be separated from God for ever."

  CURE FOR SIN

The cure for sin is Jesus Christ.

          A.  CONSIDER WHO CHRIST IS:

39

Page 29: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

In order to free us from the penalty of sin,  God designed a means by which His perfect standards could be met. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to remove the barrier between God and man.  Jesus Christ being the uniquely born Son of God is both perfect God and perfect man.  His humanity was perfect.  He alone had no sinful nature.  The virgin born of God never committed a sin, and NO divine punishment was due Him.

               1.  He is Fully God.

John 1:1 - "In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God,  and the word was God."

               2.  He is the Christ.  The Messiah of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament gave precise details about the coming Messiah.  Among many things, it predicted the following:

                    a.  In His Human Life He Would:

1).  Be Supernaturally Conceived (born of a virgin) - Isaiah 7:14.                         2).  Be Born in Bethlehem - Micah 5:2.                           3).  Be a Descendent in the Line of Abraham - Genesis 12;3.                         4).  Be of the Tribe of Judah - Genesis 49:10.                         5).  Be from the House of David - II Samuel 7:12-13.                         6).  Perform Miracles - Isaiah 35:5-6.

                    b.  In His Death He Would:

1).  Be Betrayed by a Friend for Thirty Pieces of Silver - Psalms 41:9;  Zechariah 11:12.

2).  Not Opened His Mouth, and like a Lamb to the Slaughter – Isaiah 53:7.

3).  Have His Beard Plucked Out and be Spit Upon - Isaiah 50:6.                         4).  Be Executed By Rulers - Psalms 2:1-2.                         5).  Have His Garments Parted and Gambled for - Psalms 22:18.                         6).  Be Wounded for Our Transgression and Bruised for Our Iniquities - Isaiah 53:5-6.                         7).  Have His Hands and Feet Pierced - Psalms 22:16;  Zechariah

12:10.                         8).  Not Have a Bone Broken - Psalms 34:20.

                    c.  In His Resurrection He Would:

1).  Rise in Three Days -  Psalms 16:10;  Hosea 6:2.                         2).  Conquer Death - Isaiah 25:8.                         3).  Ascend to Heaven - Psalms 24:7-10.                         4). Be Seated at God's right Hand - Psalms 110:1.                           3. He is Fully Man.

John 1:14 - "And the word was made flesh,  and dwelt among us,  (and we beheld his glory,  the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)  full of grace and truth."

                    a.   He Experienced Growth.

Luke 2:40 - "And the child grew,  and waxed strong in spirit,  filled with wisdom:  and the grace of God was upon Him."

                    b.  He was Tempted.

Hebrews 4:15 - "For we have not a High Priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities;  but was in all points tempted like as we are,  yet without sin."

                    c.  He was Perfect.

Hebrews 4:15b - "but was in all points tempted like as we are,  yet without sin."

II Corinthians 5:21 - "For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made righteousness of God in Him."

               4.  He is the Creator.

John 1:3 - "All things were made by Him;  and without Him was not any thing made that was made."

               5.  He is the Savior.

Matthew 1:21 - "And she shall bring forth a son,  and thou shalt call His name Jesus:  for He shall save His people from their sins."

               6. He is Lord.

Philippians 2:9-11 - "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him,  and given Him a name which is above every name:  That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father."

          B. CONSIDER WHAT CHRIST DID:

               1. He Died for our Sins on the Cross.

Only the Lord Jesus Christ was qualified to meet the perfect standards of God.  He paid the death penalty on the cross for every human being.  Every sin ever committed,  (past,  present,  and future)  was judged on the cross.  He became our substitute.

Ephesians 1:7 - "In whom we have redemption through His blood,  the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace."

Romans 5:8 - "But God commendeth His love toward us,  in that while we were yet sinners,  Christ DIED for us."

II Corinthians 5:21 - "For He hath make Him to be sin for us,  who knew no sin;  that we might be made the righteous of God in Him."

Philippians 3:9 - "And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ,  the righteousness which is of God by faith."

I John 4:10 - "Herein is love, not that we loved God,  but that He loved us,  and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

Ephesians 2:13 - "But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ."

               2.  He was Resurrected from the Dead.

Romans 4:25 - "Who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification."

I Corinthians 15:3, 4 - "Christ died for our sins . . . and He rose again on the third day according to the scriptures."

C. JESUS CHRIST THE GOD-MAN HAS REMOVED THE BARRIER OF SIN THROUGH HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION.

               1.  Christ’s Death and Resurrection Brought about the Gift of Eternal Life.2. Christ’s Death and Resurrection Proves that God Accepted His Payment for

Our Sins.

He met the demands of:

Romans 6:23 - "The wages of sin is death,  But the gift of God is eternal life . . ."

          D.  PRESENTATION: PRINCIPLE # 3 - Cure For Sin

This is the heart of the gospel.  Carefully go over this section of the Facts tract.  Jesus Christ,  (who is God)  has removed the barrier of sin.  His death paid the penalty for our sins and His resurrection made eternal life possible.

               1.  THE DYING OF CANCER ILLUSTRATION - Romans 5:8

"Let us say that you were dying of cancer,  and I could change places with you.   Some how I could place all the cancer cells from your body and put them into my body. What would happen to me?    (W.F.A.)  -  (You would get sick and die)

42

Page 32: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Because I change places with you. What would happen to you?   (W.F.A.)  -  (I would live.)

That is right.  You would live because I took the thing that was causing you to die, and placed it in my body.

The Bible says Christ took the penalty that we deserve for sin,  placed it upon Himself,  and died in our place.  Three days later Christ came back to life to prove that sin and death had been conquered and that His claims to be God were true."

               2.  THE HAND ILLUSTRATION - II Corinthians 5:21

"Let my left hand (hold up your left hand) represent you and me.  Let this piece of paper (the tract) represent sin.

We all have sin on us (point to the tract - which represent sin).  God loves us (point to your left hand), but hates our sin (point to the tract).  Our sins separates us from God.

We cannot get rid of our sins by doing good works.  If we pay for our sins, we would have to pay for it by death and hell.

Let this hand represent the Lord Jesus Christ (hold up your right hand).  He had no sin. He was perfect.  He took all of our sins upon Himself (transfer the tract from your left hand to right hand) and became sin for us.

He changed places with you.  He became our substitute and died on the cross to save us and He gives us His righteousness when we trust Him for the payment of our sins."

TRUST IN CHRIST ALONE

A. THE WORD "TRUST" IS A SYNONYM FOR THE GREEK WORDS TRANSLATED BELIEVE AND FAITH.

               1. These Two Words are Used Hundreds (492) Times in the Bible to Communicate the Concept of Faith.  Believe is a verb and Faith is a noun.

               2. The Most Basic Meaning is - "to accept something as being true,"   "belief,"  "confidence,"  and "trust",  which means "reliance on" and,  or "dependence on."

          B.  FAITH IS THE KEY TO ETERNAL SALVATION.

               1.  What it is Not -  mere intellectual assent.2. What it Is -  trust in Jesus Christ alone for eternal salvation.

CHRIST DIED. . . THAT'S HISTORY.

CHRIST DIED FOR ME. . . THAT'S SALVATION!

43

Page 33: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

          C.  DEFINING FAITH -

Many Bible scholars teach that FAITH has three elements:  KNOWLEDGE,  ACCEPTANCE and TRUST.  A better and more accurate view of Faith is:

               1. Faith Assumes Knowledge about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Know the facts. Knowledge is not the same thing as faith.  Knowledge (understanding) is a precondition of faith.  Before we can believe in Christ, we must know something about who He is and what He came to do.

Knowledge is necessary for faith to occur.  However, that is not the same as saying that it is an element of faith.  For example,  design plans are necessary to build a car.  Yet that does not mean that the plans are an element of a car.  Elements of a car include tires,  axles,  engine,  drive train,  and the like,  but not the plans.  The plans are a necessary precondition to a car.

Knowledge is not faith, but the more knowledge a persons has about Jesus Christ the easier it will be for them to trust in Christ alone for eternal life.

                    a.  Some Basic Facts to Share with People about Jesus Christ:

1).  His Deity.  Jesus Christ is God.

John 20:31 - "But these are written,   that ye might BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ,   the Son of God;  and that believing ye might have life through His name."

2).  His Humanity.  Jesus Christ became a man.  A perfect man without sin. I John 4:2 - "… every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God …."

3).  His Death.  Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. I Corinthians 15:3 - "… that Christ died for our sins.. ."

4).  His Resurrection.  Jesus Christ arose from the dead.  The resurrection proves God accepted Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and that He was who He claimed to be,  The God - Man.   I Corinthians 15:4 - ". . . and that He rose again . . ."

                    b.  The Problem:

Knowledge (understanding) does not ensure that faith will occur.  A person can understand something and yet not accept it as true.

A person may know that Jesus Christ lived on earth. That He died on a cross. They may even know the facts of what the Bible says about the resurrection, and yet not believe the facts as true.

2. Faith Assumes Acceptance or Mental Assent (Belief) In The Lord

44

Page 34: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Jesus Christ.

(Recognition Of Truth - Believe those facts to be true)

II Timothy 2:25 - "In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves;  if God peradventure will give them repentance (a change of mind - one's thinking)  to the acknowledging of the truth."

The most basic English meaning of "Believe" and "Faith" is "to accept something as being true," "to be convinced of something," "belief,"

When there is both knowledge and acceptance,  there is belief.

When a person accepts that the testimony of Jesus Christ  is true,  they believe or trust it.  That is exactly what the Apostle John said in I John 5:9-11.

"If we receive the witness of men,  the witness of God is greater:  for this is the witness of God which He hath testified of His Son.  He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself:  he that believeth not God hath made Him a liar;  because he believeth not the record that God gave of His Son.  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life,  and this life is in His Son."

To accept the testimony of God about His Son is to believe it,  to trust it,  and to have faith in it.

                    a.  The Problem:

A person may believe something and yet not have eternal life.

                    b.  Two Examples:

1).  A person may believe in the wrong information about how to receive eternal life.

"What "I" have done"  =  Salvation by works.

2).  A person may believe in some of  the right information about Christ and yet not have eternal life.

"I believe that Jesus Christ lived and died about 2000 years ago".

You may even believe in His resurrection!  Yet,  not trust in Him alone for eternal life.

How could this happen?  By believing in Christ,  plus adding "good works" to earn your way to Heaven.

BELIEVING IN CHRIST,  PLUS DOING GOOD WORKS

(To earn your way to God)

45

Page 35: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

= DEATH AND HELL

Matthew 7:22-23 - "MANY will say to Me in that day,  ("What ' I ' have done" = Salvation by Works)  Lord,  Lord,  have we not prophesied in thy name,  and in thy name cast out devils,  and in thy name  done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them,  I NEVER KNEW YOU:  depart from Me,  ye that work iniquity."

Verse 21, is another key to understanding what the Lord is saying,  "Not every one that saith unto Me,  Lord,  Lord,  shall  enter into the kingdom of Heaven,  but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in Heaven."

What is the "will of the Father"?  (Read John 6:26-40)

John 6:40 - "And this is the will of Him that sent Me,  that every one which seeth the Son,  and believeth on Him,  may have everlasting life:  and I will raise him up at  last day."

Larry Moyer raises a concern about the common uses of the English word "believe."  He points out that in the course of a week, you may hear these comments:

"I believe it's going to rain."                    "I believe I'll be able to come."                    "I don't believe it makes any difference."                   "I believe I gave him the wrong address."

Then he says,  "For that reason, to mention "believing" in connection with Christ may convey little more than "speculation."  However, the Biblical use of the word "believe" deals with certainty."  (FREE AND CLEAR - Dr. R. Larry Moyer -  page 34).

Richard A. Seymour explains it this way,  "Since believing in Christ is the only condition for salvation, according to God's Word,  it is important to know what the Bible means by "believe."  If I say to you,  "Do you believe in George Washington?"  you would naturally say,  "Yes."  What would I mean by the question?  I would mean, do you believe that he lived,  and that he was the first President of the United States of America... in other words,  the historical facts about him.  But then, if I asked you the question,  "Do you believe in your parents?", your answer may be yes or no,  because by asking this question I would mean do you trust your parents . . .  do you have faith in them.  The same word "believe" is used in both question, but in different ways.  The Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon,  to depend upon or to believe,  like believing someone's word.  So, when God says,  "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved,"  He does not mean to just believe that Christ existed.  Neither does He mean for us to only believe certain doctrines about Christ, e.g.  that He was born of a virgin,  that He was God in the flesh,  that He died for the sins of the world,  or that He's coming again.  Believing about Christ is one thing … believing in Him is another.  To believe in Him is to trust Him alone for our salvation … it is to depend upon Him to get us to Heaven . … it is to believe Him,  that He will do what He promised to do - give us eternal life."  (THE GIFT OF GOD - Dr. Richard A. Seymour - pages 4-5).

               3.  Faith Is Trusting In The Lord Jesus Christ To Save You.

The Word, "Trust"   is the Best English Word that Conveys the Greek Meaning of the Words Translated "Believe" and "Faith" in our English Translations of the Bible.

(Reliance On Truth - Rely upon those facts.)

The New Testament words believe and faith means trust.  The word trust,  means "reliance on" or "dependence on."  It is completely "resting in,"  and "relying on,"  "depending on," Christ to save you.

FAITH is a voluntary and sincere change in the mind of the sinner,  causing him to completely trust in Christ alone for eternal life.

To have eternal life,  one must trust the Lord Jesus Christ completely for salvation.  The responsibility is for us to Believe on Christ.  Faith alone in Christ alone.

Michael Cocoris gives this illustration on saving faith.  "Imagine a ship filled with people crossing the Atlantic.  In the middle of the ocean there is as explosion.  The ship is severely damaged and slowly sinking. Most are dead, and the rest are rushing for the lifeboats.  Now suppose one man doesn't know about the lifeboats, so he does not get aboard.  He doesn't have knowledge, so he is not saved.

Suppose another man knows about the lifeboat and believes it will save his life,  but he is grief-stricken over seeing his wife killed,  so he chooses not to get aboard and dies with his wife.  He has knowledge and mental assent, but he is not saved.

Others believe the lifeboats will save them, and they get into the boat.  They are saved by faith, that is, they have knowledge, mental assent, and trust.  However, it is not their faith that saves them - no matter how much they have.  It is the boat.  Saving faith trust Christ, and Christ saves" - (EVANGELISM: A BIBLICAL APPROACH - G. Michael Cocoris - page 77).

YOU MUST TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST ALONE, AND GOD WILL GIVE YOU ETERNAL LIFE AS A GIFT!

We cannot trust in "good works" to get us to Heaven. We cannot trust in our "baptism" to get us to Heaven. We cannot trust in the "local church" to get us to Heaven. We cannot trust in "turning over a new leaf" to get us to Heaven. We cannot trust in our "feelings" to get us to Heaven. We cannot trust in "ourselves" to get us to Heaven. We cannot trust in "others" to get us to Heaven.

We must trust in Christ alone as our only way to Heaven.

The Bible is clear,  "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life" (John 3:36).

SALVATION = FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST + NOTHING!

John 14:6 - Jesus plainly said,  "I am the way, the truth, and the life:  no man cometh unto the Father,  but by Me."

Ephesians 2:8, 9 - "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and NOT OF YOURSELVES;  it is the gift of God;  NOT OF WORKS,  lest any man should boast."

John 3:18 - "He that BELIEVETH on Him is not condemned; but he that BELIEVETH NOT is condemned already, because he hath NOT BELIEVED in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,  that whosoever BELIEVETH in Him should not perish,  but have everlasting life."

John 1:12 - "But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the Sons of God, even to them that BELIEVE on His name."

John 3:36 - "He that BELIEVETH on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that BELIEVETH NOT on the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."

John 5:24 - "Verily, verily, I say unto you,  He that hearth my word,  and BELIEVETH on Him that send me,  hath everlasting life,  and shall not come into condemnation;  but is passed from death unto life."

John 6:40 - "And this is the will of Him that send me, that every one which seeth the Son, and BELIEVETH on Him,  may have everlasting life."

Acts 10:43 - "To Him gave all the prophets witness,  that through His name whosoever BELIEVETH in Him shall receive remission of sins."

Acts 13:39 - "And by Him all that BELIEVE are justified, from all things, from which we could not be justified by the laws of Moses."

John 6:47 - "Verily, verily, I say unto you,  He that BELIEVETH on me hath everlasting life."

"WE ARE SAVED BY BELIEVING, NOT BY ACHIEVING!"

"FAITH ALONE IN CHRIST ALONE IS SALVATION!"

          D.  THE OBJECT OF FAITH IS JESUS CHRIST.

               1.  John 3:16 - "... that whosoever believeth IN HIM should not perish ...”                2.  John 3:36 - "He that believeth ON THE SON hath everlasting life . . ."

Dr. Earl D. Radmacher writes,  "Faith itself does not save.  That is, we are saved only when we place our faith in the right object, namely,  Jesus Christ.

Some people question the validity of faith alone.  They believe that works are necessary along with faith.  For support they refer to James 2:19, which says the

48

Page 38: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

demons believe and tremble.  So, they argue, believing is not sufficient.  But the question is,  "What do demon believe?"  They believe that God is one (James 2:19), that is, they are monotheists.  So are millions of others, and that is not sufficient to save.  Demons do not believe that Jesus died for their sins and that they can be saved through placing their faith in Him.  In other words, believing that God exists does not save.  But believing that Jesus died for your sins and was raised again for your justification does save (Romans 4:24-25)" - (SALVATION - Dr.  Earl D. Radmacher - page 120).

Michael Cocoris writes,  "Faith does not save.  Faith is not magic; there is no saving virtue in it.  Christ saves.

Faith is merely the means by which the benefits of Christ's death are applied to the individual.  The New Testament does not teach that a person is saved on account of his faith, but rather, that he is saved through faith.  The saving power resides not in the act of faith, nor in the nature of faith, but exclusively in the object of faith - Christ.

All that is needed is a little faith.  Jesus said an amount the size of a muster seed would do (Luke 17:6).  A mustard seed is tiny.  The issue, then, is not the amount,  but the object of faith.

The question is whether the object of faith is able to do the job.  A great amount of faith in a bridge too weak to support you would do you no good, but a small amount of faith in a bridge that would support you - just enough to get you on it - is enough to get you across it" - (EVANGELISM: A BIBLICAL APPROACH - G. Michael Cocoris - pages 76-77).

          E.  HOW DO WE GET FAITH?

Romans 10:17 - "So then FAITH cometh by HEARING, and HEARING by the Word of God" (Hearing = Believing).

Romans 10: 1-4 – “Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. “

Romans 10: 12-17 – “For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ”

          F. WHY FAITH IS NECESSARY.

Hebrews 11:6 - "But without FAITH it is IMPOSSIBLE to please (God) . . ."

               1.  We are Saved by Faith. (Romans 5:1, Ephesians 2:8, 9)               2.  We Live by Faith. (II Corinthians 5:7, Romans 1:17)

          G.  PRESENTATION:  PRINCIPLE #4 - Trust In Christ Alone

Carefully go over this section of the Facts tract.  Make the verses personal - Add the name of the person you are witnessing to in the blank.

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,  and ( __________ ) will be saved."

Ask,  "Does it say that God 'might' save you if you put your trust in Christ?

"For God so loved the world,  that He gave His only begotten Son,  that whosoever ( __________ ) believeth in Him should not perish,  but have everlasting life."

Ask,  "Do you believe this verse?   (W.F.A.)  If you can put your name in the blank space, on the authority of God's word,  what does it say you can know?    (W.F.A.)

"Verily,  Verily (truly, truly),  I say unto ( __________ ),  If you believe on Christ you will have everlasting life."

Ask,  " (__________ ),  do you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins on the cross?"      (W.F.A.)

Ask,  "What does this verse say that you have, if you believe this?"     (W.F.A.)

               1.  THE CHAIR ILLUSTRATION - Acts 16:31

"The word believe means trust.  For example, it is like sitting in a chair.  You didn't examine how it was built before you sat down in it.  You didn't put half your

50

weight in the chair and then sit down in it.  You simply trusted the chair to hold you.

Trusting in Christ means you are trusting Him alone to save you.  You are not trusting your good works or anything else to get you to heaven.  You are depending totally on Christ to save you and give you the gift of eternal life.

               2.  THE AIRPLANE ILLUSTRATION - John 3:16

"Trusting in Christ for eternal life is much like boarding an airplane.  The moment you step on the plane -  you are trusting your destination to the pilot. If you expect to get from Atlanta to Dallas;  you must trust the pilot to do for you what you can not do for yourself.

The same is true with Christ.  If we expect to get from Earth to Heaven we must trust the Lord Jesus Christ to get us there."

SALVATION IS ETERNAL

          A.  ETERNAL SECURITY   IS THE WORK OF GOD WHICH GUARANTEES CANNOT BE LOST. THAT THE GIFT OF SALVATION, ONCE RECEIVED,  IS FOREVER AND

          B.  ASSURANCE  IS THE REALIZATION THAT ONE POSSESSES ETERNAL LIFE.

LACK OF ASSURANCE CAUSES:

               1.  Some to Doubt the Reality of their Salvation.               2.  Some to Doubt the Reality of their Commitment to Christ.               3.  Some to Never Live the Victorious Christian Life.

          C.  THE REASONS FOR ETERNAL SECURITY

               1.  Because of God the Father.

John 10:29 - "My FATHER, which gave them Me is greater than all;  and NO man is able to PLUCK them out of MY FATHER’S hand."

               2.  Because of God the Son.

John 10: 28 - "And I give unto them eternal life;  and they shall NEVER PERISH, neither shall any man PLUCK them out of MY hand."

               3.  Because of God the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13 14 - "In whom ye also TRUSTED,  after that ye heard the word of truth,  the gospel of your salvation;  in who also,  AFTER that ye BELIEVED,  were SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT of promise,  which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession,  unto the praise of His glory."

51

Page 41: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

               4.  Because of God’s Word,  the Bible.

I John 5:13 - "These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life,  and that ye may BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God."

John 6:47 - "Verily,  verily,  I say unto you,  He that BELIEVETH on Me HATH everlasting life."

               5.  Because of God's Chastening of the Believer.

God is now your Father,  and He has the responsibility of taking care of you.

GOD DEALS WITH HIS CHILDREN  IN TWO WAYS:

                    a.  When you respond to and obey His leading,  He will give you guidance, encouragement,  and further instruction for a happy and meaningful life.

                    b.  When you rebel against God’s leading,  He will discipline you as any good Father would do to His children.

Divine discipline is the work of the Father for our training and developing.  Sometimes it comes in the form of testing,  trials,  failure,  and predicaments.  The purpose,  however,  is always to bring us back to Him.  It is at this point in our Christian walk that we can be in a position that the Lord can use us for His glory.

Hebrews 12:6 - "For whom the Lord LOVETH he chasteneth,  and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth."

Proverbs 3:11 - "My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD;  neither be weary of His correction."

I Corinthians 11:32 - "But when we are judged,  we are chastened of the Lord,  that we should not be condemned with the world."

         D.  ETERNAL FELLOWSHIP

               1.  Our Position in Christ - I Corinthians 15:20-22               2.  Our Eternal Relationship with the Lord -  Romans 8:38-39

          E.  FELLOWSHIP IN TIME  -  THE CHRISTIAN WALK

               1.  The Battle of the Believer - Romans 7:14-25               2.  Temporal Fellowship - I John 1:5-10

3. Live Your Life by the Power of the Holy Spirit - Romans 12:1,2,  Ephesians 5:17,18.

                F.  SALVATION DOCTRINES

Positional Possessions of the believer at the moment of Salvation

52

Page 42: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

The Christian life begins the moment a person believes the gospel, putting his complete trust in the work of Christ on the cross for salvation.  At that moment, God provides the new believer with a great number of unique and permanent blessings.

Ephesians 1:3 - "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us (Christians) with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places in Christ."

The following is a list of the things God does for the believer at the moment of salvation.  This listing can provide you with hours of quality Bible study and meditation.  You may well find other topics that could be added to the list.

Use the list with people who don't believe in eternal security.  You see in order for God to take salvation away from anyone, He would have to reverse every one of these spiritual blessings.

You can also use the list with new Christians.  Remember these are "Day One" salvation doctrines.  The moment they trusted in Christ,  they experience all of these spiritual blessings.

AT THE MOMENT OF SALVATION . . .

Three ideas are involved in the doctrine of redemption:                      1).  Paying the ransom with the blood of Christ.   I Corinthians 6:20                      2).  Removal from the curse of the law.  Galatians 3:13, 4:5

3).  Release from the bondage of sin into the freedom of grace.  Ephesians 1:7;  I Peter 1:18

VI. THE DECISION TO TRUST IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST ALONE

          A.  THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DECISION

               1.  It is the Hinge Portion of the Gospel Facts Presentation.

a. All preceding it is aimed at getting a decision.  We must inform and invite others to put their trust in Christ as their only way to receive eternal life.

b. Personal Evangelism is communicating the gospel and inviting the unsaved to trust in Christ.

               2.  This Part of the Gospel Facts Presentation Must be Practiced Twice as much as all other Principles.

This is the most crucial time in your witnessing.  You can drive the person from Christ,  or lead them to Christ by what you say and  the way you say it.

          B.  THE QUALIFYING QUESTION

               1.  The Qualifying Question:

"Does this make sense to you?"  (W.F.A.)

               2.  Helps you Determine if the Prospect Understands and Agrees with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

               3.  THREE POSSIBLE RESPONSES to the Qualifying Question:

                    a.  "Yes" - ask the invitation question.                    b.  "I am not sure"                    c.  "No"

               4.  When Your Given a Wrong Response to the Qualifying Question:

a. Briefly Review the Gospel. b. Ask,  "Do you understand the freeness of Heaven? . . . etc.c. Don’t Ask,  "What is it you don’t understand?d. Ask,  "What is it that is keeping you from trusting in Christ to save

you."

          C.  THE INVITATION QUESTIONS:

               1. The Invitation Question:

"Since this makes sense to you,  would you like to receive Christ as your Savior?  (W.F.A.)

               2.  Three Possible Responses to the Invitation Question:

56

Page 46: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

               3.  When Your Given a Wrong Response to the Invitation Question:

                    a.  Ask,  "If it makes sense to you,  Why not?                    b.  Answer the objection and ask the Invitation question again.

          D.  THE DECISION QUESTIONS

               1.  The Decision Question:

"Does this prayer express your desire to trust in Christ?" (W.F.A.)

"Would you like to pray and tell God that you are trusting His Son as your Savior?" (W.F.A.)

               2.  Ask for a Decision in the most Positive Way.

                    a.  "Would You Like to Pray..."  - Not,  "you have got to pray..."                     b.  "Trusting His Son..."  - Not,  "give up, turn from, or join..."

               3.  Expect a Positive Response.

          E.  THREE POSSIBLE RESPONSES TO THE DECISION QUESTIONS:

               1.  "Yes" and "Yes" to Both Questions  -  Pray the sinner’s prayer.               2.  "No"  -  Ask him why he said no?   "No,"  does not always mean no.

He may just need to review some principles.  If he means, "No."  Do not force the gospel on anyone. You have done your job.

               3.  "I Am Not Sure" -

                    a.  Briefly review the Gospel Facts.                    b.  Ask the decision question until a positive response is given.  And then

pray the sinner’s prayer.

          F.  Lead the New Believer in a Prayer of Thanksgiving for Eternal Life.

"Pray this prayer after me."

"Dear Lord,  I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness.  Today,  the best I know how,  I trust you as my Savior. I believe you died for me and arose from the dead.  Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life.  Amen."

               1.  Prospect Needs to Know you will Lead in this Prayer.

                    a.  Have the person repeat the prayer after you.

               3.  Teaching the New Believer to Grow in Christ

As a member of God’s family, the Lord wants you to know the joy of your salvation and the peace of His presence. There is no magic formula, but just as a newborn baby grows physically, so you will grow spiritually by taking the following steps.

a. WORSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP IN A CHURCH THAT TEACHES YOU THE BIBLE AND HONORS JESUS CHRIST.

John 4:24 - "God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth."

Psalms 122:1 - "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD."

Acts 2:41, 42 - "Then they that gladly received His word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousands souls. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."

Hebrews 10:25 - "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the day approaching."

                    b.  TALK  OFTEN WITH THE LORD IN PRAYER.

Philippians 4:6, 7 - "Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Ephesians 3:20,21 - "Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen."

                    c.  READ AND STUDY GOD’S WORD DAILY.

59

I Peter 2:2 - "As newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby."

Acts 17:11 - "These were more noble . . . in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

II Timothy 2:15 - "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Hebrews 4:12 - "For the Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul spirit, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

                    d.  WITNESSING BY YOUR WORDS AND LIFE.

1).  Be a Witness by Telling Others about Christ.

Matthew 4:19 - "And He saith unto them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."

Romans 1:16 - "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."

Mark 16:15 - "And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."

II Timothy 2:2 - "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."

2).  Be a Witness by Your Life  - (LIVING YOUR TALK).

II Corinthians 2:2 - "ye are our epistle written in our hearts, KNOW and READ of all men . . ."

II Corinthians 6:3 - "Giving NO OFFENSE in any thing, that the MINISTRY be not blamed; but in all things approving ourselves as the MINISTER OF GOD."

VIII. REPENTANCE

WHAT IS REPENTANCE?

There is simply no question about the fact that the Bible teaches one must repent (Acts 17:30, II Peter 3:9).  The question is:  What is the meaning of repentance?  Does it

60

Page 50: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

mean,  "to turn from sin,"  that is,  to change your conduct and then come to Christ after you clean your life?

The answer is,  "NO!"

II TIMOTHY 2:24, 25 - "And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach,  patient,  in meekness INSTRUCTING those that oppose themselves;  if God peradventure will GIVE them REPENTANCE TO THE ACKNOWLEDGING OF THE TRUTH."

The Greek word translated,  "repent" means to change one’s mind, to reconsider;  to think differently.

Like other theological terms it must be defined by asking a further question:

What is it that we are to change our mind, to reconsider and think differently about?

In the New Testament it is a change of one’s thinking in respect to God,  Sin,  Self,  The Lord Jesus Christ,  and How To Receive God’s Free Gift Of Eternal Life.

Repentance means to change one's mind about whatever is keeping one from trusting Christ and trust Him as the only means of salvation.

II CORINTHIANS 7:10 - "For Godly SORROW worketh repentance..."

ROMANS 2:4 - "...the GOODNESS of God LEADETH thee to repentance."

          A.  THE FACTS TRACT IS WRITTEN TO PRESENT TRUTH IN A WAY THAT HELPS LEAD THE UNSAVED TO REPENT AND BELIEVE IN CHRIST ALONE FOR ETERNAL LIFE.

               1.  Repentance and How to Receive God's Gift of Eternal Life.

Acts 8:9-25; Acts 8:22

Repent from what? -  Acts 8:20 - "But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because THOU HAST THOUGHT that the gift of God may be purchased with money."

Verse 21, 22  -"...FOR THY HEART IS NOT RIGHT IN THE SIGHT OF GOD. REPENT therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the THOUGHTS of thy heart may be forgiven thee."

The result of repentance in this passage  teaches that "no one" can buy their way into Heaven.  Eternal Life is God's free gift to those who put their faith (trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ.

               2.  Repentance about God.

Acts 17:22-31; Acts 17:30

61

Page 51: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Repent about what? -  Acts 17:29 - "We ought not to THINK that the GODHEAD is like unto gold or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s devise."

The result of repentance in this passage would lead them to the one and only true God.

               3.  Repentance about Self and Sin.

Romans 3:10, 23; Luke 5:31, 32; Luke 13:1-5

Repent about what?  Not seeing yourself as a sinner who needs a Savior.

The result of repentance in this passage would lead them to see that they were sinners and in need of a Savior.

               4.  Repentance about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:2-42; Acts 2:38

Repent about what?  Acts 2:36 - "THEREFORE let ALL the house of Israel KNOW ASSUREDLY, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both, LORD (God) and CHRIST (Messiah)."

The result of repentance in this passage would be to realize that the one they crucified was God and their long promised Messiah.

          B.  BIBLICAL REPENTANCE

REPENTANCE is a voluntary and sincere change in the mind of the sinner, causing him to TRUST in the Savior as a result of "thinking differently about God,  sin,  one self, the Lord Jesus Christ and how to receive God’s gift of eternal life".

Notice that a change in conduct is not repentance.  The changing (improving) of one’s life is the results and benefits of salvation.  You don’t get better to get saved; you get saved to get better.

Repentance is not a satisfaction rendered to God,  but a condition of the heart necessary to BELIEVE unto salvation.

Titus 3:5 - "Not by works of righteousness WHICH WE HAVE DONE,  but according to His mercy He SAVED us . . ."

Jeremiah 13:2 - "Can the Ethiopia change his skin,  or the leopard his spots?  Then may ye also do good,  that are ACCUSTOMED to do evil."

Isaiah 53:6 - "All we like sheep have gone astray,  we have turned every one to his own way;  and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all."

In reality,   one can begin living better only after he is saved.

II Corinthians 5:17 - "Therefore if any man be in Christ,  he is a NEW CREATURE;  old things are passed away;  behold,  all things are become new"

Ephesians 2:10 - "For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works,  which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

This was obvious to John the Baptist.  He told people to repent and "bring forth fruits,  meet for repentance" (Matthew 3:8).

In other words John the Baptist said that one was to repent (that is, change his mind) and then bring forth fruit (some outward visible manifestation) of that inward change of mind.  Those are two different things, thus,  repentance is the root and the change of one’s life is the fruit.

Those who preach Lordship Salvation make the fruit part of the root.  Reformation is good in its place,  but when you make it repentance and a prerequisite for salvation,  then it is wicked and evil.

IX.  LORDSHIP SALVATION - Is It Biblical?

What must I do to be saved?  The simple statement of Scripture is,  "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31),  but some today are teaching that you must do more than that.

An Evangelist urges the audience to "Turn from sin and make Christ the Lord of your life.  If He is not Lord of all,  He is not Lord at all!"  That kind of preaching of salvation is commonly referred to as Lordship Salvation.

Five arguments are used by those who preach Lordship Salvation.  The following is a brief summary of the argument used and a brief answer to each argument.

REPENTANCE

Those who preach Lordship Salvation define repentance as turning from sin or a change in behavior.

For example, John R. Scott who acknowledges that the Greek word translated "repentance" means literally "a change of mind,"  then adds "but it describes such a change of mind as involves a change of attitude,  direction and behavior."

There is simply no question about the fact that the Bible teaches one must repent (Acts 17:30, II Peter 3:9).

The question is:  What is the meaning of repentance?  Does it mean,  "to turn from sin,"  that is,  to change your conduct and then come to Christ after you clean your life?

The answer is,  "NO!"

FAITH

Those who teach Lordship Salvation define faith as a commitment of one's life to the Lordship of Christ.  One popular radio teacher actually defines faith in such a way that it includes obedience!

Obviously,  the New Testament teaches that faith is the means of salvation (John 3:16,  Ephesians 2:8).  The question is what is the meaning of faith?  Many Bible scholars teach that FAITH has three elements:  KNOWLEDGE, ACCEPTANCE, and TRUST.

A better and more accurate view of Faith is:

1. Faith Assumes Knowledge about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Know the facts. Knowledge is not the same thing as faith.  Knowledge (understanding) is a pre-condition of faith.

Knowledge (understanding) does not ensure that faith will occur.  A person can understand something and yet not accept it as true.

A person may know that Jesus Christ lived on earth. That He died on a cross. They may even know the facts of what the Bible says about the resurrection, and yet not believe the facts as true.

2. Faith Assumes Acceptance or Mental Assent (Belief) In The Lord Jesus Christ.

(Recognition Of Truth - Believe those facts to be true)

II Timothy 2:25 - "In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves;  if God peradventure will give them repentance (a change of mind - one's thinking)  to the acknowledging of the truth."

65

Page 55: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

The most basic English meaning of "Believe" and "Faith" is "to accept something as being true," "to be convinced of something," "belief," and "trust." When there is both knowledge and acceptance,  there is belief.

A person may believe something and yet not have eternal life.

1. A person may believe in the wrong information about how to receive eternal life.

2. "What "I" have done"  =  Salvation by works.3. A person may believe in some of the right information about Christ and

yet not have eternal life.

3.  Faith Is Trusting In The Lord Jesus Christ To Save You.

66

Page 56: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

Faith alone in Christ alone

LORD

Those demanding Lordship for salvation point out that we are to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 16:31) and that we must confess Jesus as Lord in order to be saved (Romans 10:9).

It is true that the New Testament refers to Jesus Christ as the Lord Jesus Christ but the question is what does the word "Lord" mean?

In the New Testament the word Lord means a number of things:  owner,  master,  sir,  God,  etc.  When used of Christ it most often means "God".  In the Old Testament the Jews refused to pronounce the name of God,  Yahweh,"  and instead they said "Lord."  Thus,  in the New Testament Lord means God.  That is the conclusion of scholars such as B.F. Wescott,  B.B. Warfield,  J. Gresham Mechan and a whole host of others.

In other words,  the word "Lord" in the phrase "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ" is no different than a modern equivalent such as "put confidence in the President."  The term "president" is his title.  It indicates his position and his ability to follow through on promises.  In a similar fashion the term "Lord" when applied to Jesus Christ indicates His position as God and thus His ability to save us and grant us eternal life.

As for Romans 10:9 the word "as" does not occur in the Greek text.  Furthermore, the word "Lord" in that verse means "God" as is proven by the fact that it is used in Romans 10:13 which is a quote from Joel 2:32.  In Joel 2:32 "Lord" is most definitely "God."

If the New Testament had meant to convey the idea that we must make Christ master in order to be saved,  then why did it not use a word for "Lord" which means "Master" and only "Master?"  Such a word occurs in the New Testament (compare 2 Peter 2:1).

DISCIPLE

It is claimed that the biblical concept of discipleship supports the Lordship Salvation position.  According to this view "disciple" is a synonym for "saint."  That is absurd.

67

Page 57: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

It is obvious that salvation and discipleship are two different things.  We are justified freely (Romans 3:24).  The requirement for discipleship, however,  is costly (Luke 14:25-35).

Furthermore, if discipleship is required for salvation,  one must be baptized in order to be saved.  Matthew 28:19 and 20 tells us how to make a disciple and part of the process is baptism.

THE RICH YOUNG RULER

The conversation between Jesus Christ and the rich young ruler is often used as an argument for Lordship Salvation.  Those using this passage contend that the rich young ruler wanted to know what he had to do to inherit eternal life and Jesus in essence told him to give up everything.

A more careful analysis of the conversation reveals that Christ first first asked him,  "Why callest thou Me good?  There is none good but one and that is God."  In other words, Jesus asked him,  "Are you recognizing that I am God?"

The young man did not answer.   Having try the godward approach,  Christ turned to the manward approach saying,  "Thou knowest the commandments."  He did not say "do the commandments"  He simply said "you know them."

Christ was using the law lawfully (compare 1 Timothy 1:8 and 9),  to teach the young man that he was a sinner.  When the young man claimed that he had kept the commandments from his youth then Jesus told him to sell what he had.  Christ was not telling him he had to sell what he had in order to be saved.  He told him that to get him to see that he was a sinner and he needed to trust something other than his money.

After the young man walked away,  Jesus told the disciples "how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God" (compare Mark 10:24).

In other words, Christ told the rich young ruler to give away all his goods because he was trusting them.  The young man needed to stop trusting his money so he could transfer his trust to Christ.

If anything hinders you from trusting Christ, get rid of it so you can trust Him (compare Matthew 5:29-30).

Several conclusions can be drawn from this brief analysis.

First, the problem in the Lordship Salvation debates is a definition of terms.  As can be seen from this study, the terms repentance, faith,  Lord and disciple must be defined and discussed biblically in order to solve this problem one way or another.

Secondly,  the issue is what is the means of a change life? In my opinion,  both sides want converts to have a change life.  The Lordship Salvation position says,  in essence,  to get a changed life,  "We demand it or we should at least preach it and ask for it."  I contend that a changed life comes by preaching the exceeding sinfulness of sin and the greatness of God's grace.  When the evangelist preaches that all have sinned,  that the penalty of sin is death but that Jesus Christ died to pay for sin and arose from the dead,

68

Page 58: THE PERSONAL EVANGELISM - FortuneCitycommunity.fortunecity.ws/campus/studygroup/47/ebook/…  · Web viewThe Biblical word believe is a word that means to trust in, rely upon, to

and urges people to trust in Jesus Christ and Him alone for salvation,  the Holy Spirit draws the convicted sinner to trust in Jesus Christ and the result is a change life.

One other observation needs to be made.  In an evangelistic conversation the issue is not Lordship but it can become the issue.  The New Testament makes the issue faith in Christ.  However,  a lost person can make something else the issue.  When that happens the evangelist must deal with that issue as in the case of the rich young ruler.

What must I do to be saved?  Is Lordship Salvation the answer? NO.

The biblical answer is "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31).

That is the good news we are to preach,  that others may come to know the gift of eternal life.  Don't confuse the issue and thus mislead sinners.

Make the message clear and plain that  people  may be saved by grace through faith.
