FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK This weekend, we’ll have our second Awakening Praise and Worship Night for our youth. I’m encouraged by their desire to spend more time with Jesus in the Eucharist. We all need more FaceTime with the Lord, and it comes not from our phones, but in adoration. Jesus is calling us into relationship with Himself. I think this will be a fruitful Lenten Season for our parishes because of the way we are spending more time with Him in the Eucharist whether at the Awakening or during our Wednesday Adoration times.

Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday. You’ll see the Mass times in this bulletin. While it’s not a Holy Day of Obligation, it is a great source of strength for us to assist at Mass as we begin our Lenten journey with the physical reminder of our mortality in the ashes we receive. We’ll take a collection at the Masses, and donate that money to our St. Vincent de Paul Society. This will begin our almsgiving. Please also pick up a Rice Bowl at Mass this weekend or next to assist you in your almsgiving.

Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat. Here’s what the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website says regarding fasting and abstinence: “Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.”

That means we refrain from eating between meals, and if we can eat less (or fewer times) than they describe here, then all the better. We deny ourselves bodily in order to strengthen our will against falling into temptation.

Stations of the Cross will be offered at every church in our consortium on Fridays during Lent. This is a good time for prayer and reflection as we pray this time honored devotion of the Church.

Saturday is Leap Day! We have that extra day on our calendar this year. Time is a gift from God. Let’s do our best to spend our time well for God’s glory.

    In Christ Jesus,Fr. Hartge

CATECHISM CORNER 2303: Deliberate hatred is contrary to charity. Hatred of the neighbor is a sin when one deliberately wishes him evil. Hatred of the neighbor is a grave sin when one deliberately desires him grave harm. “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.”

2842: This “as“ is not unique in Jesus’ teaching: “You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect“; “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful“; “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.“ It is impossible to keep the Lord’s commandment by imitating the divine model from outside; there has to be a vital participation, coming from the depths of the heart, in the holiness and the mercy and the love of our God. Only the Spirit by whom we live can make “ours“ the same mind that was in Christ Jesus. Then the unity of forgiveness becomes possible and we find ourselves “forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave” us.

2013: “All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity.“ All are called to holiness: “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” In order to reach this perfection the faithful should use the strength dealt out to them by Christ’s gift, so that... doing the will of the Father in everything, they may wholeheartedly devote themselves to the glory of God and to the service of their neighbor. Thus, the holiness of the People of God will grow in fruitful abundance, as is clearly shown in the history of the Church through the lives of so many saints.
