01PRESIDENTAL POINTS FROM
JEFF STRONG, PGA
Dear Fellow PGA Members,
First, I want to thank each of you who reached out to me regarding my recent back surgery. While it has been a tough journey, I do feel like I am finally on my way to a full recovery. I can’t wait to see you all back on the links. For those of you who are seniors, I hope you plan to play in the Lone Star NGL Texas Senior Open at Eagle Pointe. I look forward to hosting.
As you are aware, our former Section Vice-President Brad Lardon is now in the Sun Country Section, so Secretary Doug DeSive has stepped in to fulfill both his role and the one vacat-ed by Brad until we get to the Annual Meeting in February. The 2017 Southern Texas PGA Annual Meeting will be held on Monday and Tuesday, February 13-14 at The Omni Hotel Houston Westside. With it being an election year, there are several positions on the STPGA Board that will be open, and I’d like you to consider becoming involved. If you would like to talk further about these roles, please reach out to me or to Mike Ray so we can provide you with any details you may need before deciding to run for a position.
Prior to the Annual Meeting, we will also be holding the Chapter Meeting & Pro-Pro events. Chapter officers will be elected at these meetings, so please plan to be in attendance for the education and chapter meeting even if you can’t play in the tournament. The dates and sites are as follow: Western Chapter (Monday, November 28) at The Hills of Lakeway; Southern Chapter (Monday, December 5) at TBD; Eastern Chapter (Monday, December 12) at Eagle Pointe GC. At our chapter meetings, we will also be recognizing 2016 STPGA Chapter Award Winners, so that’s another reason to plan to be there!
I was grateful to get out of the house to see the conclusion of the STPGA Professional Championship at Golf Club of Houston. What an amazing display of golf by our winner, Casey Russell! Three consecutive rounds of 68 is hard to beat, but there were a host of guys trying. Congratulations to the following who earned a spot in the field for the 2017 PGA Professional Championship: Casey Russell, Lonny Alexander, Ben Willman, Greg Hiller, Jamie Christianson, Wes Skaggs, JJ Wood and Omar Uresti.
The STPGA team for the Texas Joe Black Cup matches was also finalized, so I’m looking forward to seeing Captain Randy Jones and Vice-Captain Marc DeWall keep the cup in South Texas with the following PGA Members representing us: Casey Russell, Brandon Dixon, Ricky Arnett, Jason Alexanger, Eric Bogar, Tony Johnson, Joe Mitchell, Ryan Polzin, Wes Skaggs, Robert Thompson, Jamie Christianson, and Doug DeSive. You guys know I would give anything to be there to support you in person, but doctor’s orders say I need to be home. But, I am thankful for Doug DeSive to be playing for me and I know this team is ready to get the job done. Best of luck at Lajitas on October 25-26!
Finally, I’d like to share with all of you that we are looking for a new home for the STPGA Office. After leasing space at Cypresswood Golf Club for the past few years, the STPGA Officers feel it is time to purchase our own office space. At this point, we have found a building we feel is representative of what we need and also something that we can be proud of. It is important that this purchase doesn’t put the Section at financial risk, so Mike and the Officers have done a great deal of due diligence to insure this is the case. We made an offer and are currently in negotiations on price. I wanted to make you all aware of this and let you know we will keep you up to speed on progress. Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me or Mike.
In closing, I’d like to thank those of you who have been involved in supporting our Section and Foundation so far in 2016. Some of you have really stepped up to the plate, but there is plenty of time for others to get in the game and make a difference. If you are interested in hosting a junior event, a Section event, playing a golf marathon for STPGA Charity Golf Day, or hosting education, we have a great fall ahead and a great 2017 being planned. Don’t let time pass you by and wish you had done more. Believe me, it will be more rewarding than you imagined it ever could be.
I’d love to hear from you, and I consider it an honor to serve as your President.
Jeff Strong, PGAPresident

03Q&A WITH TWO STPGA HARVEY PENICk TEACHERS OF THE YEAR
CHRIS ROWE & BRECH SPRADLEY
Q. What is the best advice you would give a young apprentice who came to you?
Rowe: The golf business is a wonderful way to make a living and enjoy going to work every day. You are around great people, work in a beautiful setting and never sit in a cubicle.
Spradley: I would recommend to a new apprentice to spend as much time as possible shadowing different instructors. Continue to learn as much as you can about different philosophies and approaches instructors take with students. Attend as many instructional seminars as possible. You will carve out your own preferences and beliefs over time, but there will always be opportunities for you to apply what you’ve learned from other teachers with certain students. There is a reason that those teachers have been successful. Always keep your mind open.
Q. What and who have been the strongest influences on developing your teaching philosophy? Has your philosophy changed over the years? If so, please describe.
Rowe: My teaching philosophy has been influenced by spending time with the best teachers and picking their brains on how they teach. It’s important for young teachers to absorb all the information available. When I started teaching we didn’t have internet or the golf channel so you read a lot and learned by trial and error. We didn’t have video like we do today and nothing like Trackman existed. The ability to get knowledge is the key to being successful regardless of your chosen profession. Young professionals have more knowledge available to them than ever before just by just turning on a computer.
Philosophies change every year on how the golf swing works. Ben Hogan wrote the Five Fundamentals, Homer kelly wrote the golf machine, Jim McClean came up with the X Factor, then came Stack and Tilt. Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book still has more wisdom in its pages than all the different theories that have come along the past 100 years. My philosophy on the golf swing has definitely changed over the years. When my teaching career started we played with persimmon woods and balata golf balls. The majority of the college kids today have never seen a balata ball and a persimmon driver looks like a wooden hybrid to them. During the 1986 Masters, Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman were hitting 300 yard drives with this type of equipment. The only way to create distance was to have an inside to out downswing with a lot of release to create side spin. The ball would roll a long way if you made this type of golf swing. The game changer in distance and teaching was the Pro V1 golf ball. This golf ball changed the way teachers would teach even if they didn’t realize why their philosophies had changed. The modern day swing is more body rotation with less hands than the swing we taught pre Pro V1. If we taught the modern day swing with a balata ball it would produce that cool looking heel shot we used to hit that took off low like a jet and continued to rise until it would land with no roll because of the high amount backspin. Every student is different and it’s our job as instructors to find the best way to make our students better. There is no perfect method or perfect swing, but every student has their own perfect swing. Jim Furyk doesn’t have a classic Hogan golf swing and there isn’t an instructor on this planet that has tried to teach one of their students the Jim Furyk swing, but that swing shot 58 in a tour event. Byron Nelson, said it best,” Find a golf swing you can repeat and spend the rest of your life working on it.” Our job as instructors is to find that swing for our students!
Spradley: As a new teacher in the early 90’s I had the opportunity to teach at a busy driving range in the heart of Dallas. We had eight other independent contractors at the facility and most were veteran instructors with a broad range of beliefs and styles. I was around some who had worked for John Jacobs, Hank Haney, Golf Digest schools, and Natural Golf. Being around these different teaching perspectives provided a great kick start to my career
CHRIS ROWE2012 & 2016

as a golf instructor. In 2003, I started working for Chuck Cook in Austin and was fortunate to work with him for the next seven years. During that time, Chuck also introduced me to Ben Doyle and Mac O’Grady from whom I learned a great deal. Although I never personally spent time around Harvey Penick, he was a big influence on Chuck and because of that, I was able to glean many of the great “Harvey-isms” during that time. My years working side by side with Chuck were phenomenal. He has certainly been the biggest influence on my teaching and continues to be a great mentor and friend.
Q. How do you work with students on setting short and long term goals?
Rowe: Paper never forgets! Write your goals down and put them in a place where you can see them every day. My goals are beside my computer as I’m typing this and one of them was to win the Harvey Penick Award in 2016. When you see it every day either physically or subconsciously you start putting your dreams into motion. My motto is Dream Big & Work Harder!
Spradley: Helping a student identify their long term goals with golf is certainly the first step. In many cases, they are still unsure want they want out of the game. Once we establish goals, we can then set some short term goals and benchmarks. Long-term goals may be unclear for juniors, so I find short-term goals are initially a better motivator. A junior who wants to play D1 college golf and then become a tour player has a very different road map than Mr. Smith who wants to break 90. As an instructor, we have to constantly wear our investigative hat to determine where we can make the biggest improvements with the player. I ask all my serious students to do shot/stat tracking of their rounds. In most cases, it is eye opening for them to learn where their strokes are being thrown away. Generally, it is not what they thought. It is also important to provide the student with practice plans. This makes them accountable for the work it takes to achieve their goals.
Q. Obviously, you two are highly accomplished as teachers of the game. What are your goals for 2017 and how do you stay motivated to achieve more?
Rowe: My goal for 2017 is to continue to lead my staff to make Whispering Pines Golf Club the best experi-ence in the country. I also want to help my members and the rest of my students to play their best golf ever. Finally, I want to mentor the PGM students and help them not only to pass their PAT, but to become better players after they move on to jobs in the golf industry. I’m looking forward to finishing my second book in 2017.
Spradley: My motivation to continue to grow, improve and achieve more in the world of golf instruction comes each day from my students and the desire to find the right method, insight and words that enable them to reach their goals. I believe it’s important to continue to learn and pick up nuggets that I can put in my tool box. A teacher should never stop learning and striving to improve their craft. I also learn from my students on a daily basis about their thoughts, personality types, and what makes them perform best. One of my personal teaching goals for 2017 is to host a two-day teacher’s summit at Barton Creek, bringing together a diverse group of experts and providing a great learning environment for the golf professionals in our Section. I have wanted to do that for some time and 2017 is the year.
