Dear Residents,

When I joined the Shanghai Centre family about one and a half years ago, I immediately felt the positive energy flowing through this complex. We're all trying hard every day to make Shanghai Centre a better place to work and live. But it wasn’t until I sat back and thought about how much this place has changed over that short amount of time that the significance really struck me. Allow me to quickly recap those 18 months for you…

Our retail food & beverage offerings have expanded tremendously, with French patisserie and gourmet sandwiches from Paul Bakery, and with the debut of Passion Chocolat we now have a new high-end chocolate store. Chill Café brings coffee & snacks to the Exhibition Plaza, the legendary burgers of Gourmet Café have found a home at the West Retail plaza, and Din Tai Fung is ready to satisfy your cravings for xiao long bao and shao mai. Other new retailers include the exquisite massage services of Green Massage, the modern kiosk of Alice Flower, and the master-craft jewelry of Buccellati. Yet there is still much more to come, with Miumiu and Tom Ford, two new high-end retailers opening on Nanjing Road early next year. To bring more diversity to our theatre scene, we have recently hosted numerous international acts, as well as Chinese modern dramas, Peking opera performances, and now, for the next three months, we'll be home to the musical revue “From Hollywood to Broadway” -- a show you won’t want to miss! Meanwhile, apartment residents have been invited to participate in new resident-tailored courses, outings and parties. For our youngest residents, we have introduced a variety of after-school sports programs and upgraded the recreational area with a huge bouncing castle and trampoline.

If you have any ideas or suggestions on how to provide an even better experience of “Life at Your Doorstep”, feel free to contact either myself or anyone in the marketing team whenever you like. On behalf of the management team and all our staff, we wish you a happy holiday season!

For kids, Christmas is mostly about one thing - presents. Talk about Christmas, and the first question that pops up is “What do you want

from Santa this year?” The possibility that Santa might skip past your house, leaving nothing for those who’ve been more “naughty than nice” is inspiration for a few solid months of good behavior. Kids generally don’t hide their feelings, either, so it’s pretty obvious whether your gift is a hit or a flop. (Hint: Playstation3: hit; new trousers from grandma: flop.)

But as we get older, things start to get more complicated. We learn that Christmas is more about the “spirit of giving.” And that “it’s not the gift, but the thought that counts.” We learn to feign a smile and say “You shouldn’t have,” as we unwrap a tie that’s destined for the darkest depths of the closet, or a blouse that we wouldn’t be caught dead wearing, thinking really, you shouldn’t have. Yet despite all the modesty, deep down

inside, we’re all still kids. And nothing makes us light up like receiving a gift that we truly love – something, perhaps, that we’ve always wanted.

But aside from asking up front and spoiling the surprise, how do you know what’s on your loved one’s secret wish list? Men, in particular, struggle with finding the right gift for the special woman in their lives. And though women tend to be more confident shoppers, men aren’t always as easy to please as they first seem, either. Parents often have a hard time knowing what’s in

Cover Story

or out for their teenagers. And what to give your family friends or loved ones back home?

Well, rest easy, because we’ve taken the liberty of consulting with some of our favorite retailers to get sound advice on how to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. And the best part is you won’t even have to leave Shanghai Centre to get all your shopping done this year!

What Women Really WantFor most men, the prospect of walking into a boutique in the hopes of finding the right gift for a woman is like trying to guess what Eskimos like for dinner. We often defer straight away to the advice of the sales representative and pray for the best. But as top Sales Rep Summer at Marc Jacobs points out in her quest to make me a better shopper, it helps to do some research beforehand. “Ask yourself some basic questions, like what kind of person she is. How tall is she? Is her style more trendy or more classic? And most importantly, does she know the brand?”

This might require a little snooping on your part. Take a look at her closet and see what brands she favors. Is her style funky or subdued? Does

she tend to carry a small handbag or an oversized one? In my quest to understand women’s tastes, Summer gave me some pragmatic advice. “You might want to skip clothes,” she said. “You’ll never get the size right. If I were you I would stick to handbags and fragrances.” In the end, what I came away with was a Miss Marc handbag (for a girl with trendy tastes) at about 1890RMB, and a bottle of Daisy perfume (710RMB). Gift wrapping: free. Exchange policy: within one week.

Of course, the mystery what do women really want? was solved long ago by Marilyn Monroe in the film Gentleman Prefer Blondes when she sang the tune

“Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.”

Thus my next stop was the newly opened Italian jewelers Buccellati. Based in Milan, with a history of handmade jewelry dating back over 200 years, Buccellati is one of the world’s most respected names in custom made jewels, winning the favor of royal clientele from Italy, Belgium, Spain, Egypt and even the Vatican. The “Gold Lace” designs are all limited editions, favoring white gold with sprinkles of diamonds. Right away, my eyes fell on a diamond-encrusted necklace with white gold leaves linked by yellow gold chains. The cost? A modest 398,000RMB – worth it, no doubt, for the one you love.

But in fact, I was surprised to find several more affordable options, including unisex matching rings for 11, 000RMB-20,000RMB. And in the end, I set my heart on a pair of gold and sapphire diamond earrings for 65,000RMB. Guaranteed to make a special girl very happy this Christmas, indeed.

The Allusive Mind of a ManYou think we’re so simple, huh? A few suits in the closet, a pair of khakis and a polo shirt, a shaving kit and we’re good to go. Well, not so fast… True, most men are perfectly comfortable having their wives or girlfriends buy their clothes for them. But we’ve got a few secrets up our sleeves, as well. One of them is the allure of the briefcase. A smart leather briefcase says “Here’s a man who’s on top of his game.” Men like our suits to be pressed and our shoes to shine.

Kidstuff

Something for EveryoneIf there’s one gift that pretty much everyone loves, no matter what they’re age or interest, it’s a good book. You basically can’t go wrong here. As much as kids love Wii2, Harry Potter proved that kids also still love a good read. But when it comes to selecting the right book, a little creativity may be in order. For a teen, especially one enjoying the rare and sometimes difficult experience of living abroad, a journal makes a great gift. This is something that they’ll be able to go back to for the rest of their lives and enjoy. Likewise, for folks back home who want to get a glimpse of the world you’re living in, a beautiful coffee table book on China makes an ideal present.

One of the most interesting books I found during my visit to Chaterhouse Books was a 2010 diary/monthly planner put together by M on the Bund in a pop-up book style, filled with fascinating cultural trivia, including ration tickets from the early Communist days, and some great local recipes. Other titles that caught my eye were China Cuckoo by local expat writer Mark Kitto (who founded That’s magazines and now lives in Moganshan), and the aptly titled Yoga for Wimps. Helpful tip: Chaterhouse also sells

Christmas cards and gift wrapping paper!

Of course, China is a gift-hunting paradise, as Marco Polo realized. To that end, a visit to Zhang’s Textiles and Emperor Silk would be a wise bet. A great gift idea I found at Zhang’s is framed antique embroidery – an ideal gift to send back home, which they can help you arrange – for about 500RMB. Gorgeous antique hairpins and handmade ear r ings are also quite reasonable and add a perfect touch of style to any woman’s wardrobe. Likewise, enjoying Christmas brunch in his&hers matching silk robes from Emperor S i lk (3600RMB) is a perfect way to warm up your holiday season. So happy shopping and Merry Christmas f r o m a l l o f u s a t Shanghai Centre!

Italian cooking without moving it too far from its origins.”

But we also love the confidence that comes with a truly stylish briefcase. The Salvatore Ferragamo black leather briefcase (18,000RMB) is sure to bring out the Donald Trump in us all.

But here’s another secret: there’s more to our lives than work, and we’re also just as concerned with our bodies as women are… well, ok, maybe almost. Next stop, The Portman Ritz-Carlton Health Club. “There’s no better gift than the gift of health and wellness,” proclaims Health Club manager Rickard Blomberg. We both agree that it’s a delicate issue to give a fitness center membership or personal trainer passes to someone who’s clearly out of shape. But in the end, we also both agree that it’s a gift that deep down they’ll truly appreciate – especially when they’re flexing their newly toned abs at the swimming pool next spring. Every guy pats his belly now and then and swears he’s gonna get in shape. This is the inspiration to do it. And he’ll thank you for it. Just be sure to soften it with a sweater or a new winter coat from Paul & Shark or Loro Piana, as a gym membership alone might send the wrong message. Special Christmas discount: ten sessions with a personal trainer for 2000RMB/one-month non-resident Christmas special Health Club membership 1500RMB.

Christmas breakThe Caterpillar and Butterfly classes will be on vacation from Monday, Dec. 21 onwards.

All classes will resume on Jan.11. The teachers & parent committee wish all the kids and their families a great holiday season! Halloweeny KidsWe had them all: Indiana Jones, Batman, Spongebox Bob, Transformers, Winnie de Pooh, Queen Amidala, Darth Vader, even an astronaut! Have you ever worn something so soft and comfortable that you never wanted to take it off again? Well, that’s a great description of the clothing created by Italian boutique Loro Piana. The touch of baby cashmere against your skin, the divine caress of Vicuna, “Fabric of the Gods”, is like draping yourself in a gentle whisper. The Loro Piana family started their wool and cashmere fabric business 200 years ago, rising to dominate Italian haute couture. Whether it’s thigh-high leather ladies boots, or a cashmere sweater, the touch and feel of this clothing is unparalleled. The designs, meanwhile, are classically smart and timelessly sexy. This year’s Fall/Winter line-up brings fur-lined winter-coats for men and women in stylish grays, navy blue and earth tone browns, plus a wide selection of sweaters and scarves so warm and soft that you’ll be thankful the cold weather’s finally arrived!

Suite A05, West Retail Plaza, 6279 8330

Din Tai Fung’s steamed buns and dumplings are almost as legendary as they are delicious. From its humble beginnings as a small dumpling restaurant in Taiwan, started by a penniless worker from Mainland China, Din Tai Fung gradually rose first to local, then international acclaim for its tasty fare and great service. Popular with Taiwanese celebrities and politicians, and practically an institution in Japan, Din Tai Fung has been recognized by the New York Times as one of the top restaurants in the world. The chain has expanded into

several countries, including the USA, Korea, Singapore and Indonesia. Their latest store opens last month at Shanghai Centre. Check out the shrimp and pork shao mai, and enjoy your fill of fresh steamed jaozi and baozi!

Event RecapDragonboat RaceThe second Annua l Shangha i Cent re Dragonboat Race was a big hit! With six teams, representing Shanghai Centre residents, tenants and staff, we had a total of more than 110 excited rowers ready for battle. After a short practice run, the US Consulate team once again showed off its strong teamwork and took first place. The staff from the Portman Ritz-Carlton came is second, closely followed by the Canadian Consulate team. Way to go teams! Halloween PartyWe had a real parade of movie characters visiting the Shanghai Centre: Indiana Jones, Darth Vader, Cruella de Vil, SpongeBob, Queen Amidala… But also fairies, witches, princesses and ladybugs were present at our fun Halloween party. The events team did a fabulous job in transforming the Atrium into a real haunted house, and the food from the hotel was “scary” good… Quite a bag full of trick-or-treats for kids this year! Cabernet Sauvignon de-mystifiedNovember’s wine-tasting topic was “Battle of the grapes”. Under the professional guidance of a true wine-expert, attendees were introduced to the world of the cabernet Sauvignon grape. The new resident lounge proved to be a perfect location for this well-attended event. Our next wine-tasting is scheduled for December! Hairy CrabFall is Crab season in Shanghai! Residents were invited for a wet market tour to select the best crabs, followed by a cooking class to learn how to prepare this local delicacy. If we're to believe the hilar ious stor ies from some of the par ticipants, making crab-dumplings isn't easy, but it's a whole lot of fun!
