With their reputation for excellence in every department they are called in all over the country and in the past they have found themselves working inside the Tower of London at midnight, on the high seas aboard a luxury cruise liner and on high streets all over the United Kingdom! And then of course they come back to base and return to installing their unique high quality kitchens and bathrooms in homes throughout the area. Sounds like a business that’s really on the way up!‘It’s great to be in demand’ says Paul Shepherd, Marble Graphics’ director ‘and some of the jobs we’ve had recently have been really exciting. At the Tower we were installing new granite bar tops in the Armouries Restaurant which is a converted arsenal from the 1660’s - you get a real sense of history when you’re working on a building that old. Cleethorpes Carnival Parade 2012On Saturday July 28th 2012 the streets of Cleethorpes will be alive with colour, noise, music and laughter for the annual Cleethorpes Carnival Parade.Since it’s humble beginnings over thirty five years ago this fantastic free event has remained true to its original ethos by providing a showcase for the wealth of music, entertainment, culture and kindness that our community has to offer along with the opportunity for charities and groups to benefit from collections taken during the parade. Until 2007 the Parade was organised by the Council but when they took the decision to no longer fund or

manage the event it was taken over by Cleethorpes Events, a non profit making organisation of volunteers. Since they have been organising the parade in excess of £14,000 has been raised to help charities. Many people who dressed in costume and rode floats in their childhood now come to watch their own children taking part in the festivities. A tremendous amount of work goes into the making of the floats and groups and charities work for many weeks and in some cases months to build them, putting together their ideas some times on a shoestring budget - the goodwill of local businesses and

individuals has always been an important part of the event. The weather has not always been kind but we are looking forward to having a wonderful parade and a bright sunny day - the organisers have put in special request to the sun to get his hat on and come out to play on the day.The Parade will leave Sidney Park at 4.30pm and make its way along a four mile route to the Meridian Park Arena.

Folk Festival - A Roaring Success!

The sun smiled and the east coast chill took a holiday so that thousands of people could enjoy the fourth annual Cleethorpes Folk and Cider Festival at the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway over the weekend of May 25th-27th. The fabulous weather was certainly a factor in drawing the crowds but the festival atmosphere and warm welcome also played a huge part. There were plenty of performers who were new to the area and many festival favourites made return appearances but

as well as music on stage there were Morris Men dancing and for the first time buskers took their music onto the resort streets, spreading great music throughout the resort. It would seem a little unfair to single out any one band or artist for particular mention

as the calibre of performance was quite exceptional this year and each individual set was of high quality. At the youngest end of the spectrum fifteen year-old Amy Rainbow had the crowd in the palm of her young hand on Sunday when she opened the afternoon session with a set of mainly self-penned songs. Amy writes from the heart and brought tears to the eyes of her listeners as she sang about finding her place in a world that can

be hard to navigate. At the opposite end of the spectrum, seasoned and experienced Ploughman’s Bunch were a positive delight. Fronted by cool as a cucumber Steve Jackson the Bunch delivered a delicious set of folk, blues and Americana classics that had the

audience demanding more.Estuary Radio was present throughout the weekend broadcasting live and giving performers and punters a chance to have their say. Martin Samuels, the force behind Estuary Radio was delighted with how well the festival integrated the radio station and said he hoped the outside broadcast would be the

first of many such collaborations.

Try some of these top

tips for size!

First of all take the time to figure out just who is likely to buy your property. Is it a city centre flat suitable for one, a starter home fit for a couple or is it a family sized home? When you have decided who is likely to buy then make your decisions about where to invest your money on that basis. Aim to add value in the areas of the house that your likely buyers will value.Remember that it’s cheaper to build space than to buy it - so if you’ve got the opportunity to convert or extend then go for it. Loft conversions are usually the quickest and cheapest way to add a bedroom and if the access

is easy and the conversion looks in keeping with the rest of the house you can easily double your money. Basement conversions are more expensive but still possible but if you’re looking for more space downstairs then you might want to consider adding a

conservatory or perhaps turning an existing garage into a usable room.If the streets in the area are crowded you may want to consider turning the garden into hard standing - off road parking always adds value! Indoors concentrate on the kitchen to start with - then the bathroom - those are two areas that people value and where a well thought out renovation can really add some wow factor. You can use large mirrors to add a sense of space and perhaps even knock down some walls (but not load bearing ones of course!) but above all make your house feel like a home - after all your prospective buyers are planning to live there so let them see what a cosy place you have made it and how happy they could be if they buy!

It’s the end of term. The school books are packed away and the uniforms have been consigned to the back of the cupboard. Many children are looking forward to six weeks of uninterrupted television and computer games, interspersed with family outings and holidays. However students from the Grimsby, Healing Kumon Study Centre will still be getting a daily dose of Maths or English. Kumon students will attend their weekly study sessions and complete their daily worksheets.Kumon is a carefully structured and planned method of self-learning for children of all ages and abilities. Each child works at their own pace, and takes responsibility for their own learning with the help and guidance of their instructor. Daily summer work keeps children’s brains ticking over. School may be out for the summer but learning and growing is for life.Contact Sarah Prior at the Grimsby Study Centre for more details or visit the website www.kumon.co.uk

Summer Study Keeps Kids Smart!

How’s your brain fitness? You’ve probably noticed that these days the shops seem to be full of books and games which claim to offer ‘brain training’ or ‘increased brain fitness’. Some are targeted at adults, others at children but they all promise to make us and our families smarter. Sounds like a great idea of course but are they based on good science – do they match up to the claims that are made for them? The theory behind all these products is that the brain can respond to exercise in the same way that the body does. It’s not something that all researchers agree about but most agree that everyone can derive some benefit from undertaking some mentally stimulating tasks. Part of this benefit is achieved via the mechanism of neurogenesis – the creation of new neurons or brain cells, and part is the result of dendritic sprouting which is the process by which the neurons in our brain form new connections with each other.

One of the most celebrated researchers in this area of neuroscience is the famous Dr Ryuta Kawashima, creator of the world famous Brain Training Games for the Nintendo DS. Kawashima became famous when he was offered (and refused) a salary of over ten million pounds a year by the game developers! What seems clear is that using our brains, whether for puzzles, chess or crosswords does no harm and probably does a lot of good. For children it can be particularly valuable – as can the extra stimulus and confidence offered by programmes such as Kumon. So whatever type of brain training you prefer we suggest you have fun and we’ll see you all at the rocket science convention.(And just to get you started on your way we’ve set you a little brain teaser below. Answer on Page 22)

Who’s the most computer savvy person in your family ? If it’s your grandma or grandad then you’ve already met the phenomenon that is the rise of the

Our homes are important to us - we have spent years buying them and then decorating and furnishing them to suit our needs. They are the places where we experience joy and sorrow, a treasure trove of memories. To have to say goodbye to ones home because one can no longer cope with it’s physical demands is a hard choice to have to make. But the good news is that there may be adaptations which we can make which will enable us to live longer in our own homes, so preserving our own independence and identity. Adaptations may be relatively simple - for example if you are having trouble with the steps up to the front door the installation of a hand rail can make a world of difference. In some situations a wheelchair ramp or lift may be required. If moving around within your home is becoming a problem there are a wide range of possible responses. In many cases where it is difficult to turn from a corridor into a room in a wheelchair the problem can be fixed by rehanging or adjusting the door. In other cases doorways may need to be widened or walls removed to create necessary space.

Careful planning may be needed to make rooms more suitable for the use of those with mobility issues - and care should be taken when thinking about issues such as the

suitability of floor coverings, the need for improved lighting and decluttering and the dangers of trip hazards. If the stairs are becoming a problem then a stairlift can be a godsend, as can adaptations to make the bathroom more usable. For more advice on home adaptations and on what help may be available contact your local Home Improvement Agency. So did you figure out the answer? Okay here goes. Travelling at 60mph means that you cover a mile per minute and travelling at 30mph means that a mile takes 2 minutes. In order to average 60mph over the whole journey Jane would need to go there and back in 2 minutes. Unfortunately she did the first mile at 30mph which means she has already used up her 2 available minutes - which means that however fast she might travel she can’t possibly average 60mph for the round trip.

Older drivers get there quicker with maps!

Are you a SatNav person or do you still stick with maps? If it’s maps then the chances are you’re over thirty as research suggests that most under 30’s rely heavily on digital navigators. The same research suggests that it may be the map users who have the last laugh however, because while SatNav users tend to simply get into the car and go where the machine tells them, map users are more likely to take the trouble to plan their route in advance, taking into account weather and driving conditions. Map users are also more likely to be able to navigate their way around unexpected problems which may outwit the on board computer such as suddenly arriving at the back end of a ten mile tailback. In such situations many young drivers struggle to find an alternative route using an atlas, whereas older drivers are able to change their route with ease.

Early starts are an essential part of the greengrocery trade – I’m up at 5am most days. I start the day by checking the phones and emails to pick up the orders that have come in during the night. Two or three times a week I go over to Hull to the fruit and veg market – it’s a lot easier now that they have moved closer to the bridge but it’s still hard work, especially in the depth of winter. The recent reduction in the bridge tolls has made a big difference to us – it’s nice to see the politicians getting their heads together for the benefit of local businesses for a change.I aim to get to the wholesalers for about 6.30 – that gives me time to grab a cup of tea when I get there – I drink it while I’m going round inspecting the day’s produce. No two days are ever alike in the fruit and veg trade and that’s especially true in this crazy wet summer that we are having – prices can go from rock bottom to sky high in a blink of an eye. This year cauliflower and broccoli have been the ones to watch – availability is low, prices are sky high and it isn’t the shopkeeper making a killing! Lots of crops have simply rotted in the ground because it is too wet to harvest them and those two have suffered worse than most.I usually stop and chat with other traders at the wholesalers for a few minutes – it’s good to get news about what’s happening in other areas – then it’s time to load up and get back to base.I’ve been in the fruit and vegetables trade for three years now – since March 2008. I used to live in Surrey where I owned a printing business until I moved North after a matrimonial dispute, headed for semi retirement. I was planning a nice quiet life – relax and enjoy myself, work as little as possible – but once you’ve spent a lifetime in business you find that you miss it when it’s gone and it wasn’t long before I was getting bored and looking for a new venture to keep myself busy.By chance I went into the greengrocers at Fiveways and while I was talking to the proprietor it became clear that he was fed up and wanted to sell up – by that afternoon the deal was done and I was the proud owner of Pippin’s! It might sound mad but it really was that quick and I found myself with a whole new business to learn my way around. In June of that year I was in the shop when a lady came in and we got chatting for a while – I thought she seemed nice and I was over the moon when she rang the shop half an hour later to ask me out. We went out and had a great time, never looked back and in August 2009 Di and I were married at Grimsby Registry Office! I can honestly say that the only arguments we’ve ever had have been about the business – and that’s because sometimes she thinks she’s right when everybody knows she’s wrong. (Sorry Di – just a joke – honest.)Now we were a team it seemed like a good time to think

about expanding the business – I had been thinking for a while that there might be scope for moving into the wholesale trade and so we set up our second branch – in Pelham Road Immingham. I had a lot of help from the eFactor people –

especially Ian Haigh and Tony Parkinson and the premises were open by November 2009.Diane now runs the Fiveways shop – she works really hard and it has gone from strength to strength since she has been in charge.I usually get back to Immingham for 9am and the next few hours are spent preparing orders for our wholesale clients. This side of the business has really taken off – we supply ships on Immingham dock, care homes, golf courses, pubs, hotels and of course restaurants. What’s important for these businesses is quality, first and foremost, and reliability – they need to know that their orders will arrive in tip top condition and bang on time – otherwise it will cost them money. I’m lucky that as well as Diane at Fiveways I’ve got excellent staff - Tracey at the Immingham shop and Gavin our driver.Orders and paperwork can take up the rest of my day but sometimes I’ll get out of the shop for a while, perhaps to visit one of our suppliers. We buy produce from all over Lincolnshire, going as far South as Boston and I like to get round regularly to seeing the growers. They’re having a tough time this year. Whenever possible we like

to buy local but of course a lot of our stock comes in from all over the world – on any given day all the continents of the world can be represented in the shop. Some afternoons I like to get back to the Grimsby shop and spend the afternoon with Di – it’s good to spend some time together because we can both be very busy these days. It’s nice to see the regular customers at the shop as well – customers are the backbone of any successful business – my motto has always been that my first priority is customer care.I usually head for home at about 4pm but of course there are still phone calls to be made and admin to be done. In the evenings or at weekends I like to get down to the Westlands Club and watch some sport and have a few pints with my fellow club members. Diane and I enjoy going out to restaurants – we especially like to visit ones that we supply to – we always know that the food will be outstanding and it’s nice to feel that we have played a small part in that.I’m usually an early to bed kind of person – you have to be with these early starts – so I don’t spend a lot of time watching TV – there’s always something that needs doing to improve the business but at the end of the day I can sleep soundly in the knowledge that between us Di and I have made Pippin’s into a thriving little business – I’m proud of that.

According to research published this month 17 percent of homeowners have been the victims of burglary, 22 percent have been verbally abused and 13 percent have been physically abused – worrying figures we’re sure you’ll agree. And there’s no doubt that people do worry, probably more than is necessary – the same research showed that more than half of homeowners are fearful of being burgled and nearly as many do not answer the door after dark.Of course there are steps which can be taken to reduce the likelihood of burglary – we are all familiar with most of them, but the Association Of Chief Police Officers have some useful and unusual suggestions to offer – particularly on the security implications of installing new window and door units.

If you are thinking about replacing yours it’s worth having a look at their suggestions –• Try to buy doors and windows which are certified to the British Standards Enhanced Security Level – that’s PAS 24-1 for doors and BS7950 for windows.• Install 5 lever locks tested to BS3621.• Ensure that door panels are strong enough to avoid being kicked in.• Use laminated glass on ground floor windows and doors – it’s much tougher.• With sliding doors have the sliding section on the inside – and ask for anti lift blocks to be fitted. Some good advice there which we will certainly be trying to follow when we get our much needed double glazing fitted!

Geoff ’s Gardening ServicesHere is what some of Geoff ’s customers have to say about his gardening services. “We have employed Geoff for many years now and we have no hesitation in highly recommending him. He is a very reliable, hard working and polite

When he has fi nished he clears all the rubbish away and takes it to be disposed of. Th e garden looks a picture. We have never been disappointed.” - Mrs M.E. - New Waltham “I have found Geoff to be friendly, hard working, reliable and prepared to tackle any task asked of him. At this time of year the flower garden should be looking it’s best but we can’t just rest on our laurels. To keep plants in flower for longer regular dead heading is essential and early summer flowering shrubs should be pruned and

hedges may need trimming regularly as the summer growth spurt gets under way in earnest. In August rambling roses are ready for cutting back and lavenders should be trimmed as their flowers fade.If the weather ever decides to warm up then a summer watering schedule will have to be implemented (preferably with rain water) throughout the hot periods - don’t forget to make arrangements with a friendly neighbour or relative to ensure that your garden gets watered while you’re off sunning yourself on your holiday. While you’re watering don’t forget to keep fishponds topped up as hot weather can result in falling oxygen levels. In the vegetable garden its a case of weeding,

weeding and more weeding. Climbing plants will need gentle help to get their footings on their support and some early crops of potatoes, beetroot and salads may be ready for harvesting. You can still plant out later varieties of tomatoes, courgettes, squashes and other tender crops - at this time of year you should be okay sowing straight into the ground.
