Brand as an asset

These guidelines establish the principles and give specific details for The People’s Pension brand identity.

Using simple, everyday language aligned with a bespoke illustration style, the brand is fresh, distinctive and engaging – linked closely with B&CE’s core values of creating simplicity, showing compassion and keeping promises, making the automatic enrolment journey hassle-free for advisers, employers and employees.

1.0 Introduction

Increasing the strength and recognition of our identity demands that we be consistent in our approach and in detailed implementation.

Please follow these guidelines closely so we can achieve this with a brand that communicates clearly to our customers.

This document provides a guide to the use of the visual identity across a range of applications, with specifications for our logo, colours, imagery and typography.

Logo2.1 Visual brand elements

The People’s Pension logotype, with a person icon as the apostrophe, forms the foundation of the visual identity.

The typeface used within the logotype is VAG Rounded – distinctive, open and welcoming; and set all in lowercase adds to the friendliness and approachability The People’s Pension wants to convey.

As part of the identity we have substituted the apostrophe for a person icon that can be developed as part of the overall brand; the icon adds life and a personal element to the logo for future use. We have also changed the ‘e’ characters within the word ‘people’s’ to look like smiling eyes.

In text, The People’s Pension must always be written in full, never shortened, abbreviated or capitalised. It must always be written with initial capitals (Title Case).

Logo versions and formats2.2 Visual brand elements

White-out logo

When used on dark and coloured backgrounds, the logo should be white. This will provide a striking contrast allowing the logo to be clearly legible.

Full colour logo

The positive version of the logo is always used on clear white backgrounds. The logo uses Grey and Light Blue. This should be the primary logo used on the majority of collateral on and off-line.

These approved versions of the logo have been created for the specific situations described.

Black single colour logo

For use on facsimile and other black only publications. This artwork may also be suitable for some promotional items where a single colour is being printed.

Logo file types available are listed below:

PRINT TTP_Logo_CMYK.eps TTP_Logo_Pantone_Coated.eps TTP_Logo_Rev.eps

SCREEN TTP_Logo_Rev.png TTP_Logo_RGB_300dpi.jpg

Please use the appropriate file for the required application.

Wherever possible please use an .eps file for print applications. If your programme will not accept an .eps file format, please use the .jpg or .png instead.

For further assistance please contact the Marketing Department.

Linear logo

This linear version of the logo may only be used in specific circumstances where the primary logo does not have the desired impact eg sponsorship, promotions, or online advertising where available space is long and thin.

Logo exclusion zone2.3 Visual brand elements

Clear space rule

The People’s Pension logo must stand out clearly from its surroundings. This applies not only to the background, but also to interference from nearby text and other graphic elements that might compromise the impact of the logo.

To ensure this, an ‘exclusion zone’ or ‘clear space’ rule has been established to give a clear space around the logo. This exclusion zone indicates the closest that any other graphic or text can be positioned in relation to The People’s Pension logo.

The example on this page demonstrates the minimum clear space required around the logo which is equivalent to the height of the letter ‘p’ in ‘people’, or 29% of the height of the logo.

The area shown here in grey is the ‘exclusion zone’ in which no other graphic element or type should be placed.

Logo proportions2.4 Visual brand elements

Size

The minimum size for all printed material is 22mm wide and 126 pixels (at 72dpi) for digital on-screen use. Both versions of the logo should not be used less than the minimum size as this would lead to a compromise in legibility.

However, there may be unusual occasions when production or spatial limitations will require the use of an icon that is smaller, (eg when printed on a pen). When this occurs please use it no smaller than 15mm.

For large formats such as banners, billboards and signage, the logo should be proportionally balanced to the size of the piece. In all cases, the logo should never bleed off any edge or be cropped. The logo must always maintain clear space around it to preserve the integrity of the logo and allow for maximum readability.

Strapline proportions

For people, not profit

The strapline supports our brand positioning and should appear whenever possible.

• The example opposite shows the ratio between logo and strapline

• The strapline’s size is determined by The People’s Pension logo size. The height of the ‘e’ in the strapline should be able to fit twice into the height of the ‘e’ in pension 2 x strapline ‘e’ = pension ‘e’

• The Strapline should be shown in Heading Grey when used on a white background. For colour references please refer to section 2.11.

• For positioning on a page/screen please refer to sections 5.0 to 9.0.

Logo usage don’ts2.6 Visual brand elements

The logo is a unique element and one of the key components of the visual identity system. To ensure stand-out and legibility it is important that the logo is never altered, redrawn, recoloured or manipulated in any way whatsoever. Failure to reproduce the logo correctly will cause visual damage to brand recognition. To avoid this, please note that the following samples are not allowed.

The colour structure must never be altered

The logo should never appear with a drop shadow

Don’t place the logo on a background with insufficient contrast or on a visually distracting background

Don’t condense or distort the logo

The logotype must never be changed or edited

Don’t adjust positioning of the icon

The logo should never appear in a different colour

Don’t create an outline version of the logo

Don’t reduce or enlarge one logo element without adjusting the other proportionally

Dual branding2.7 Visual brand elements

Occasionally we may need to feature both the B&CE and The People’s Pension logos within communications, although this is NOT our preferred choice.

The size ratio between the B&CE logo and The People’s Pension logo are pre-determined as shown here. (See sections 4, 5 and 8 for more information). Please follow these rules.

• The size ratio between the logos is determined by their matching height.

• The appropriate logos should always be used from master artwork files only, never recreated. Refer to the B&CE Brand Guidelines for more information.

• File ref: B&CE_TPP_CMYK.eps

Size ratio

Dual branded When the emphasis is on both The People’s Pension and B&CE, such as communications promoting The People’s Pension to the construction industry

Typefaces (print and onscreen)

2.8 Visual brand elements

Print purposes – primary font

The typeface – VAG Rounded – is distinctive, open and welcoming, adding to the friendliness and approachability The People’s Pension wants to convey. We recommend two weights – Light and Bold. Body text is 9pt on 11pt leading.

When VAG is not available

The standard recommended system font is Calibri (a sans serif typeface) which is highly legible when used in Word templates. We recommend three weights – Regular, Italic and Bold. In Word templates the body text is 9pt on 11pt leading.

Typography – the use of sentence case

Always write in sentence case – use an initial capital for the first word only of the title, sub-title, heading or sub-heading. Please note that this rule does not apply to proper nouns, which do have initial capitals.

Bullet points

Circular bullets are the standard format. Bullets are coloured Light Blue except when white out. Sub-level bullets should be indented and use hyphens (see page 13 for example).

Line illustrations2.12 Visual brand elements

The line illustrations are a unique element and one of the key components of the visual identity system. To ensure stand-out and legibility it is important that the illustrations are created in a uniform style to maintain consistency and brand integrity.

The illustrations are a visual and engaging link to key benefit driven messages and used with headlines and brochure titles.

Always strive to create illustration ideas that are engaging, clever and simple in their execution. As the style is bold, it’s advisable to really think about the illustration and if it will work, too many details will ‘fill in’ if it is used small. See examples on section 2.15 for reference.

Key points

• The line must always end with the arrow head on the right hand edge

• Illustrations must follow the gradient guide, as demonstrated right

• Illustrations should only be placed against a white or light blue background

• Illustrations must bleed off the page on the left hand side

• The rules opposite should be adhered to in terms of line weights

Changes to workplace pensions 01

What changes are happening to workplace pensions?

Starting from October 2012, every employer must provide a workplace pension for their employees. It doesn’t matter if you work for a company with one or 100,000 employees, every employer must automatically enrol their workers into a workplace pension if they are not already in one.

What is automatic enrolment?

It simply means that you will automatically join your employer’s workplace pension scheme. Many people just don’t get round to sorting out a pension. So, rather than having to sort it out for yourself, your employer will do it for you.

Why is this happening?

The Government wants us all to save more towards our retirement. Over seven million* of us aren’t saving enough to be financially comfortable when we stop working. This means we’ll have to rely heavily on the State Pension. The full basic State Pension is only £107.45 a week for a single person and £171.85 a week for a couple.

The selection of PowerPoint slides shown here demonstrates how the TPP templates can be used to create clear and consistent presentations that conform to our brand guidelines.

When creating or editing presentations please ensure that you refer to the ‘Top 10 Tips’ on the following pages, and use the templates as a starting point.

Although they’re called ‘templates’, the files available are purely sample layouts with appropriate branding elements already built-in for your convenience.

Presentations containing slides that are restricted by templates can become boring for the audience. Our slides should be fresh, lively and contain information that’s new (at least to the audience), whilst maintaining our brand integrity.

Please also refer to the full B&CE and TPP brand guidelines.

Note: All external-facing presentations (or internal for training) must go through the approval process.

PowerPoint: Top 10 Tips7.2 Digital & onscreen

1. Page Setup

BEFORE you even start creating content, it’s important to set up your presentation with the correct screen shape. This will ensure that graphics are not stretched or squashed into a widescreen format, when you created it in standard format, or vice-versa.

How do you know which size to select?

WIDESCREEN 16:9 (recommended) – If you are presenting directly from your own PC/Laptop, the 16:9 ratio suits the monitor shape best.

STANDARD 4:3 – Older monitors, and some projectors, use the ‘old TV shape’ ratio of 4:3.

If you are transferring your presentation, sending it ahead, or presenting via the venue’s computer, you should contact the venue directly and ask what screen ratio they use.

Note: we have templates for the common sizes already set up for B&CE and TPP presentations. See Top Tip 4.

2. Powerpoint Versions

Older versions of the PowerPoint programme do not recognise many of the animations/transitions of the current software and will not render subtle design effects like shadows and bevels. Similarly, they may not play videos or music files.

If you are presenting directly from the PC/Laptop on which the presentation was created, your presentation will be fine. If however, your presentation is being transferred to another computer, you need to check what version of PowerPoint is being used.

Note: B&CE use PowerPoint 2010 as standard but some company PCs/Laptops may have PowerPoint 2013 installed.

See Top Tip 3 about ‘PowerPoint Viewer’.

3. Powerpoint Viewer

To help manage the version control issue mentioned in Top Tip 2, you can download a free viewer from Microsoft. Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=13

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer lets you view fully-featured presentations, including animations, created in PowerPoint 97 and later.

But think ahead – you may not have a good internet connection at the venue, so it would be worth downloading the .EXE file before the day of the presentation. And if you have identified that the venue runs older software than your own, it would be wise to ask the host to download it on to their system before the event.

Note: To view a presentation via PowerPoint Viewer, you need to open the Viewer first, then go to file, open... (your presentation). Don’t double click on your presentation file to launch it, as that will simply open the main PowerPoint programme, and it will not function as intended.

Please liaise with the IT Department about downloading and installing PowerPoint Viewer.

4. B&CE Templates

A series of Templates containing sample Master Slides are already prepared.

Please use these as your starting point. They include:

A_B&CE_Template_16x9B_B&CE_Template_4x3 C_TPP_Template_16x9 D_TPP_Template_4x3

Each Template has been set up for the appropriate screen shape (See Top Tip 1) and includes our colour palette and font styles.

5. Master Slides

Slide Masters are set up for both B&CE and TPP presentations, but are purely prepared as layout suggestions for consistency. Remember, your audience expects a unique presentation with new content. Try to avoid your presentation looking pre-packaged.

There are Master Slides for:

• Blank slide,

• Basic slide,

• Title and content slide, and

• Divider slide.

And, on the pages, there are suggestions for:

• Title slide,

• Typical text/bullet point slide,

• Typical divider/break slide, and

• Typical end slide.

6. Font/Type Styles

The Master Slides already have type styles established for you. We use a simple and clear set of typographic rules consistently. For more detail about our typographic styles see Sections 2.8, 2.9 and 2.10 of the B&CE brand guidelines.

Alignment – Always align typography to the left. This increases legibility and keeps layouts tidy. Make sure headings and text sit in the same positions across all pages

Case – Standard sentence case should always be used for headings and text (ie not all capital letters, unless specific emphasis is required).

Note: Our main corporate font, VAG Rounded, can not be embedded into PowerPoint successfully. Use the font that is set within the Templates, ie Calibri.

If you wish to have all of the type within your presentation specifically set in VAG Rounded, please refer to the Marketing Department well before you begin your presentation.

It is illegal to copy the VAG font and send to an unlicensed user.

7. Colour Palette

Within the Slide Master there is an established colour palette. See B&CE Colour Theme. Please use this set of colours wherever possible to ensure brand consistency, and specifically our Primary brand colours, blues and greys.

If in doubt, please refer to the B&CE brand guidelines Section 2.12 (B&CE colour breakdown) and The People’s Pension brand guidelines Section 2.11 (Colour palette).

Note: Red is not one of our colours.

8. Intro & Conclusion Slides

Within the Templates are example Introduction and Conclusion slides. These can act as visual markers for the audience. An Intro slide can be useful while the audience is settling down. A Conclusion slide can be a useful device to let everyone know that your presentation has come to an end and is a good prompter for questions.

9. Your Content

As a general rule, in PowerPoint presentations, less is more.

Keep it Simple – Slides should be used to support the speaker and supplement the presentation. The slides themselves are not the ‘star of the show’. Don’t let your message and your ability to tell a story get overshadowed by slides that are overly complicated.

Limit bullet points and text – Don’t bore an audience with too many bullet points and don’t fill your PowerPoint slides with too much text.

Limit transitions and builds (animations) – Use object builds and slide transitions selectively. Stick to the most subtle and professional (similar to what you might see on the evening TV news). Use no more than two or three different types of transition effects throughout.

Use high-quality graphics – Only use graphics that conform to the B&CE/TPP style. Avoid using Clip Art as it often undermines the professionalism of the presenter. Be mindful of image copyright. If you need assistance please refer to the Marketing Department.

Use colour well – Use our core brand colours consistently (Light Blue, Dark Blue, Dark Grey, Light Grey) and other colours sparingly as ‘accent’ colours only. Within charts you may need to use colour for differentiation.

10. Keep Crib Notes

Keep a simple list of your slides to hand as a ‘crib sheet’. This will enable you to jump quickly to a slide of interest if a member of the audience says “can you just go back to the slide about charging...”

If your crib notes show that slide is on page 5 say, while the presentation is still open, on the keyboard press ‘5’ and ‘enter’ to jump to that slide.
