Upcoming webinars

By Luisa Fisher

Earlier this summer, the Education and Professional Development Committee conducted aPriorities Survey of CAPAL members in an effort to determine how the membership would likeour Committee to support their professional development needs. We discovered that members

have a desire for learning opportunities in emerging areas of academic librarianship, includingproject management, new technologies, and trends such as social media and open access.Research-related skills (such as ethics, data management, and systematic reviews) were alsotop priorities.

Webinars are an ideal way to develop competencies without breaking the bank. Many webinarsare available free of charge for participants, while others may charge a fee that is nonethelessmore budget-friendly than travel and registration for conferences. The Partnership’s EducationInstitute (EI) offers several webinars this fall that are aligned with topics identified in the priorities

survey: Online videos for library instruction (November 17), Research design and analysis(November 26), and Top tech trends in libraries (December 1). Registration is $45 for membersof the provincial/territorial associations that comprise The Partnership, or $55 for non-members.See the Education Institute’s fall course calendar  for full descriptions.

Meanwhile, several American organizations’ fall webinar offerings may be of interest to

Canadian academic librarians. On October 7, Library Journal will be hosting TheresaWillingham, the author of a new guidebook on makerspaces in libraries, for a free webinar onthe topic of  best practices for getting a makerspace started in your library. Later in the month, onOctober 20, the ACRL’s Choice offers a free webinar entitled Faculty perspectives on publishingopen access. Finally, from December 4-18, the folks behind Electronic Resources & Libraries(who conduct the annual Electronic resources & libraries conference) will collaborate withLibrary Journal to offer a free, three-part webinar series on Data driven academic libraries. Sessions will discuss what it means to be a data-driven academic library, and will then focus ontwo specific examples: library usage data analysis and impact metrics.

Project management (PM) for libraries was one of the topics most frequently named by prioritiessurvey respondents as a desired area for learning opportunities. Members may be interested in

this two-part webinar series on PM (Part 1, Part 2), hosted by OCLC’s WebJunction. The seriesfocuses on the development and assessment of project plans. While the webinar did take placeearlier this year, all learning materials are archived and accessible online.

The pulse: academic librarianship education in Canada

By Mark Weiler

As the national association of professional academic librarians, CAPAL is interested in the stateof professional education in Canada. Perhaps the most powerful force of education are the eight

 ALA-accredited schools in Canada.

This section will help CAPAL members get an insight into the ALA accreditation process.

The ALA’s Committee on Accreditation is the accrediting body of 59 librarian educationprograms, eight of which are at Canadian universities. The committee is comprised of 12appointed members, one of which must be Canadian.

The 2008 accreditation procedures defines six qualitative standards and involves acomprehensive review process. In February 2015, the ALA adopted a new set of accreditationstandards. Accreditation now revolves around five standards and has greater emphasis on

learning outcomes.

The most recent Canadian schools to have gone through the comprehensive review processare the University of Alberta, the University of Ottawa, the University of British Columbia, andthe Université de Montréal. The next in line are McGill (Fall 2016), the University of Toronto(Spring 2017), Western University (Spring 2018), and Dalhousie (Fall 2019).
