THE PEOPLE OF PEAK NICHOLAS HOPWOOD, CFP®

I would like to thank everyone for their kind words of support and encourage-ment over the past few months during the move and re-branding. I value my relationship with each and every one of you and words cannot express how proud I am to be partnering with you.

This year, Jennifer and I made some big plans to host an orphan from Ukraine for 5 weeks. However, we just received news that the children were unable to travel to the airport due to safety concerns in the region. We were very saddened by this development, as we were hoping to try and make a difference in this young boy’s life.

After attending St. Joseph parish in Dexter for the past 11 years (Jennifer and I were married at St. Jo’s in 2004), in the fall I decided to take the plunge and become Catholic. The RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation) started in September and ended at the Easter Vigil with Confirmation. It was truly an outstanding experience!

This spring I ran the Dexter-Ann Arbor half-marathon. The training through the winter/spring was grueling but I managed to successfully finish, with a time of 2:08. Boy am I glad to have that behind me!

This August Jennifer and I are celebrating our ten year wedding anniversary! Where has the time gone? Hunter (age 6- entering 2nd grade) and Jack (age 4- continuing in pre-school) are doing well- perhaps they will make an appearance at the open house on July 10 if they can behave!

MATT SALTZGABER, MBA

My wife, Jacqueline, and daughter, Alana, welcomed Ryan Matthew Saltzgaber to our family in January! Our daughter was very excited to meet him and gave him a special birthday party at the hospital. He is now 5 months old and already getting big- he is in 9 month outfits already!

Alana is very active and loves to get dressed up in princess outfits every day. She will be turning 3 years old in July and is very excited and looking forward to a birthday cake. Sweets are very rare in our house.

Jacquelyn and I are planning on staying around the area this summer and look forward to spending time with our family and friends. Hopefully staying home will allow me to have some time to finish some tasks on my never ending to do list!

MATTHEW KRAEMER, ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Summer has finally arrived as my spring courses are coming to an end, which means I have time to relax for a couple days and spend time up north. I have a couple trips planned to go to my grandparents’ cottage up in Leelanau, to play as many rounds of golf as I can in the morning and go on the lake all day. Besides golf, traveling and work I have a couple hockey practices every month to keep some rust off for the season. Then before I know it, summer will be over and I will be back in school entering my junior year studying accounting. Addi-tionally, continuing my third year of playing hockey for the university.

WELCOME MATTHEW KRAEMERMatthew started at Peak Wealth Management on June 1 on a part-time basis. His role is initially to help us with special projects, including going digital. We are imaging all our client files so we can be a 100% paperless office. This will make us more efficient and more green. Matthew will be a junior at the University of Michigan- Flint in the fall and is majoring in Accounting. He is also a hockey star on the UM Flint club team!

LIFE INSURANCEWILL YOUR FAMILY HAVE ENOUGH MONEY IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO YOU?

Life insurance should be used to cover your loved ones financial expenses in the event of your death. If you pass away, how will your family pay the bills? How much money will they need? We do not enjoy thinking about our death, however, it is a fact of life and not planning may cause financial hardship for your family. By proper planning, you may be able to provide the lifestyle that you dreamed of having for your family.

SO HOW MUCH LIFE INSURANCE DO I NEED?

The amount of life insurance you will need will vary for each individual family. You will want to select an amount that will be capable of paying off your debt along with providing an income to your family. I recommend that you start by adding up all of your current debt. This should include your mortgage, car, loans, credit cards etc. Next think about any future expenses such as children, college expenses, wedding and vacations. Lastly, how much money will you need to cover your basic expenses such as food, utilities and personal expenses on an annual basis? The total of these expenses will be the amount of life insurance that is recommended. Another method is called income replacement and can be calculated by taking your current income and multiplying it by the number of years until you retire.

WHAT TYPE OF LIFE INSURANCE DO I NEED?

There are different types of life insurance that can be used to provide financial stability for your family. Typically the least expensive form of life insurance is known as term insurance. Term insurance is purchased for a fixed life insurance benefit for a certain period of years. If you die during this term, your beneficiaries will be paid the entire death benefit. This death benefit is a gift to your beneficiaries and is not taxed as income. If you die after the term period, then no money is paid out to your beneficiaries. Other forms of life insurance can provide a death benefit without a fixed period of time. However, these policies will be much more expensive than Term Insurance. A younger couple may want to consider Term Insurance based on the policy expense.

MY WORK PROVIDES FOR MY LIFE INSURANCE!

Most companies offer this benefit to their employees, however, we must point our several concerns. You have heard the old expression “do not put all of your eggs in the same basket”. Well, you are following that philosophy by having your company provide your life insurance. If you leave your company or are let go, than these policies may no longer be valid. This may cause you to purchase life insurance at an older age which may mean that your policy will be more expensive. Also, some companies may require you to reapply every year which could also impact your ability to get it if you develop a life threatening illness. In addition, your policy may increase every year. You may be better off by having an indepen-dent policy that you own which may also be less expensive.
