The Pavilion

part of Leicester forest, a stunning period home built in 1830 with large gardens
and enjoying a prime elevated position. Attached to one adjacent property, the
property has been luxuriously refurbished to an exception standard and offers a

the master bedroom etc. With four good sized bedrooms, the property offers
gas fired central heating, parking for numerous vehicles, double carport,
summerhouse, large mature gardens with ornate railings and panoramic views on
all sides over Western Park. Western Park is one of Leicester's largest parks
offering 73 acres. The main drive features a wide avenue of trees which were laid
out for the inaugural opening in 1899 and within easy access is the children's play
area, bowling greens, tennis courts and woodland walk. The park was once part
of Leicester Forest (mentions in the Doomsday book in 1089) and was an
important games reserve where the Earl's of Leicester and their descents hunted.
An oak tree still remains from this period and is affectionately known as "Old
Major".
The forest was an essential source of wood for the inhabitants of Leicester and
the timber was used to build houses and business premises as well as being an
important fuel supply. By the beginning of the 16th century most of the forest
was depleted of trees and the land was enclosed. At the end of the 19th century,
Leicester city purchased the land to raise a park for the people of the West End.
The land was purchased from the Trustees of Sir John Mellor one of the most
important land owners in New Parks and Westcotes. A Roman road from
Manchester is thought to cross the park and in 1849 a railway line which cut
through Brick Kiln Meadow was opened, this linked the Midland Main line and the
Leicester Swannington Line. The graceful contours of the park are a blend of
meadows, mature woods and hedgerows interspersed with established shrub and wooded areas. Overall this creates a mosaic of habitats where wildlife abounds.
