felt . The “ Shechinah,the vis ible symbol

of the Divine presence,had been with

drawn,

-there was no longer the assu ranceof gu idance a nd protection . But

with the promise of His “ presence,

thy spiri t,when on its surface there is a

chambers there is the “ peace ” of God,

the rest of a forgiven soul,

—the qu iet of aloved

,confid ing ch i ld . Judge not

are at rest who meet you with gleaming eye,

a nd j oyous countenance,a nd merry laugh .

Ah ? no,their Sou l “ knoweth its own bit

terness .

” Could you read the pages of

their hearts , you would find the record of

many woes,

through the soul . The rest which isfound in the presence ” of God

— yea,convulsed in the throes of

death,have fallen words of meek resigna

tion,a nd even j oyful hope

,that told , how

the peace of the spi rit ca n tri umph over a lloutward pain .

No smile is like the smile of death ,When

A nd,O bel iever ! th ink Of the future fu l

filment of th is sweet,

promise,

— when theba ttle of l ife wi ll be ended , the confl ict over,the stormy ocean crossed

eternal repose at last entered,

there rema ineth a rest for the people of God . Yes

there is a “ rest ” i n heaven — not the restof inactivity !— not the indolence of a Paganelysi um

,or a Mohammedan paradise ! but

the qu iet of a soul reposing on its God,

,which has become a very necessity
