The Pathfinder - Page 1 The Pathfinder Volume 15, Issue 1 - January 2017 St. Paul United Church of Christ Columbia, IL BETWEEN MEMORY AND HOPE While doing some reading, I found these words concerning Advent. An excerpt from the “Companion to the Book of Common Worship” (Geneva Press, 2003, 96) In Advent we expectantly wait for the One who has already come. We anticipate the promised justice of God’s new world, yet we praise God who raised the “righteous branch” to rule with justice and righteousness. We hope for the restoration of the afflicted, the tormented, and the grieving, yet we delight that healing has come in Christ. We long for the beating of swords into plowshares, yet we rejoice that the Prince of Peace has appeared. We yearn for the barren deserts of our inner cities to flourish, yet we laud the desert Rose that has bloomed. We dream of the land where lions and lambs live in harmony, yet we acclaim the child born to lead us into the promised land. Christ has come! Christ is risen! Christ will come again! In Advent, we are living between the first and the second coming of the Lord. The dialectical tension of maranatha [alternately translated “Come, our Lord!” or “Our Lord has come”] — placing us between memory and hope, past and future — may strengthen our Advent liturgies. Perhaps we need to cling to the ancient cry of maranatha! and its paradoxical meanings so we may freely embrace “the new thing” prophesied by Isaiah (Isaiah 43:19) that God is doing among us right now. The tension and paradox we find in Advent shapes our celebrations during the season. As you read this newsletter, the season of Advent is coming to a close and Christmas Day and Christmas season are coming soon. What if we took the themes of Advent and the coming of Jesus seriously? What if our memory was so good, that we made Hope, Peace, Joy and Love the lens through which we saw and lived the entire new year? Maybe that is what Christmas is all about. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! from Pastor Bob ECUADOR!!! Are you really interested in going to Ecuador on a mission trip this summer? There was a lot of interest in the days and weeks following the presentation Hannah Redinger made last summer after her return from the Illinois South Conference trip. It was a fantastic presentation and moved so many of you who wanted to go the coming summer. A trip the summer of 2017 would include a Habitat for Humanity Build, a visit to several of our other mission partners in Ecuador as well as a trip to one of the equator sites. However, time seems to have moved people’s interest in different directions. If you are still interested, please call or text Pastor Bob at (618 -978-5579) or email him at [email protected] and let him know. PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE 10 A.M. SERVICE ON NEW YEARS DAY. Souper Bowl of Caring You may remember the many powerful and/or funny live commercials the youth have done in church in January over the last fourteen years; well, they are coming again!! Our Junior Youth Fellowship has participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring since 2003. During that time they have raised $13,919! Every penny of which they have donated to various feeding ministries in Columbia, Southern Illinois and even the Caribbean nation of Haiti. The money is raised through the sale of Super Sub Sandwiches which will be hand made with love on Souper Bowl Sunday (February 5), as well as through cash donations in our soup pots on that same Sunday. Subs can be ordered until Sunday, January 29, by stopping by our table in the fellowship hall at church or calling Pastor Kris in the church office 281-5102. Our subs are an excellent value at $6 for a six inch or $12 per foot because you are feeding yourself and someone else at the same time!! Subs can be picked up after each worship service on February 5. Thank you for helping us to fight hunger, YOUR Junior Youth Fellowship

Souper Bowl of Caring

You may remember the many powerful and/or funny live commercials the youth have done in church in January over the last fourteen years; well, they are coming again!!

What’s Happening at St. Paul?

JYF:

January 2 – 1 p.m. – Ice Skating at Steinberg Rink – Prices and final details to follow. January 22 – 6 p.m. – Planning Meeting – Youth Center (3rd floor) parents and calendars requested! SYF: January 4 – DEADLINE for ALL PAPERWORK and payment turned in for Winter Weekend for those who committed by December 4! Remember to bring your friends. They don’t have to go to our church; they just have to have a signed permission slip!!!

Peace, Pastor Kris

Thank you again for another wonderful Christmas Market! From the fantastic response of all our volunteers to the energy that fills this room during the sale, it is truly a special event at the most special time of the year. As of the time this needed to go to print, we did not have our totals; so stay tuned to the next edition of the Pathfinder for an update.

Thank you again, we could not do this without the love and support of this extraordinary congregation!

Fastnacht 2017

A group of men of the church have decided to continue the St. Paul “Fastnacht” Pancake and Sausage Night. Fastnachts are held on the Tuesday evening before Ash Wednesday. This year that will be February 28. We are still looking for plenty of men to help, so talk with Paul Straub (618.719.6715) if you are interested in helping. Tickets will be available after the first of the year. All proceeds will go to the General Fund of the church.

Giving Thanks for a Special Gift Lorraine Kossina passed away on April 17, 2016. She remembered St. Paul United Church of Christ in her will indicating that an unrestricted gift of $10,356.20 should go to our ministry. It was decided by the full St. Paul Consistory, as recommended by the Executive Committee, that this gift should be divided as follows: $3,000 to the general fund, $3,000 to the Second Mile for Others ($1,000 going to each of the following: Hoyleton, DuBois, and Kindercottage) with the remaining balance of $4,356.20 going to the Building a Bridge to the Future Campaign. We thank Lorraine for remembering the church in this way, so that others might benefit through the ministry of Jesus Christ at her passing from this life to life eternal.

*********************************************

I would like to thank the youth and parents for their participation in both the Waterloo and Columbia Christmas Parades. St. Paul UCC and I greatly appreciate their time. Again parents, thank you; your young adults-to-be did a great job. Our float won the trophy for “Best Reason for the Season” at the Columbia Bright Night Parade!

Sincerely, Paul Straub

If you would like to join Pastor Bob in worship and visit our members at Oak Hill nursing home in Waterloo, please join him on Thursday, January 19 at 10:30a.m.

A NEW YEAR’S PRAYER There are many prayers to offer for the start of the New Year that your family may want to offer to God. This prayer may just get your family and community started!! May God make your year a happy one, not by shielding you from all sorrow and pain, But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes. Not by making your path easy, but by making you sturdy to travel any path. Not by taking hardships from you, but by taking fear from the heart. Not by granting you unbroken sunshine, but by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows. Not by making your life always pleasant, but by showing you when people and their causes need you most, and by making you gracious to be there to help. God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the years’ ahead. Amen.

DON’T LET THE COLD STOP YOU FROM WARMING SOMEONE’S HEART!!

January is National Blood Donor Month!! Since January, 1970, this month has been the time to

recruit more blood donors. Low donations are due to colder weather, people being sick

themselves or in their families, and just not thinking the blood is needed when there are often

more injuries, from weather related accidents. You don’t need a special reason to help, such as a

friend asking or family member needing blood. Some people give for their own reason. Some believe it is the

right thing to do. Whatever the reason, the need is constant and important to protect a healthy and reliable

blood supply. You feel good knowing you helped change a life!! To find out where you can donate, call 1-800-

RED-CROSS or redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment.

Thank you!

The 2017 Flower Chart is in the Narthex: Sanctuary flowers on the altar each Sunday are provided through

donations by members who wish to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or other family event, or for those who wish

to remember or honor a loved one. The cost of the flowers is $35, and may be paid in the church office.

Another year has come to an end and it is time to report to the congregation on the ministries we have fulfilled here at St. Paul in the name of Jesus Christ.

Annual report articles from boards and committees are now due. If you haven’t submitted your article, please send it to me in the office at [email protected].

Thank you for your cooperation! Cathy
