THE PASTOR’S VOICE It’s the most wonderful time of the

year—or so the old song goes. Yet we

have to admit that it doesn’t always feel

that way. We can all rattle off a list of

the reasons why we feel a twinge of

stress or sadness mixed with happiness

or excitement when the carols start

playing in every public setting. Hectic

schedules, rampant materialism and

reminders of personal wounds are just a

few of the reasons.

Whether you are the person who is

ready to relax and savor the season

because you did all your shopping and

preparations months ago (not likely) or

the person who dreads the busyness,

responsibilities or loneliness that steal

your joy this time of year (much more

likely), the Christmas season offers a

unique opportunity to experience God’s

love and grace in the midst of real life.

Christmas can still truly give us a taste of

the most wonderful time of world

history. Jesus—the Messiah, the

Savior—came as the light into the

darkness and stress and pain of the

world—our world. That world then, just

like our world now, including our lives,

needs the light to illuminate, clarify,

guide, and heal. Christ’s coming brings

that ultimate light and His peace, joy, and

all-consuming love. Those are the true

gifts of Christmas. And He is worth

celebrating.

Join us for an unforgettable Advent series

as we celebrate how Jesus’s birth

changed everything and brings us hope,

love, joy, and peace even today!

The Sermon Series begins December 3

with a study of the Gift of Hope that Jesus

is for the world.

In the Holy Land are two ancient bodies of water. Both are fed

by the Jordan River. In one, fish play and roots find sustenance.

In the other, there is no splash of fish, no sound of bird, no leaf

around. The difference is not in the Jordan, for it empties into

both, but in the Sea of Galilee: for every drop taken in one

goes out. It gives and lives. The other gives nothing. And it is

called the Dead Sea. William Sloane Coffin, former pastor at

Riverside Church, New York City .

Financial Insight

The chart on the right tells the tale of the proverbial double-edged

sword. In comparing 2016 Jan-Jun total giving with 2017 Jan-Jun

total giving, overall we are down by almost 4%. Looking behind the

numbers, we see that giving which supports operational expenses

of the church (non-designated monies) has gone done by 9.7%.

While it is a true blessing to have your strong support for the many

varied ministries of HUMC, we also need to continue to meet our

operational expenses.

correspondence, thoughts and prayers

Harrisville United Methodist Church “Prayer Blanket Ministry”

Words can hardly express my gratitude for the lovely blanket

you gave me. Your prayers were deeply appreciated during

this most difficult time. Each time I use my blanket,

I will treasure all the love & prayers that went into it while you

made it.

Thank you deeply from my heart!

Love,

Jackie McIntire

Thanks so much for the wonderful luncheon.

Your kindness and caring were deeply appreciated.

Dottie VanDyke & family

To Harrisville United Methodist Prayer Blanket Ministry,

I would like to thank you for the blanket. It is so beautiful,

soft & warm. I really appreciate the prayers and thoughts

for me. I am recovering good after my surgery.

Again Thank you,

John McGhee

Dear Ladies,

Thank you so much for all that you did for the “Faith Family”

during Dad’s Memorial. Everything was so special. No words

are worthy of the thanks we feel,

The blanket is awesome.

Love always,

Lori Schultz

(Lori Faith)

Ladies,

Thank you so much for the beautiful blanket. That was

such a surprise and so very nice of you all and also, for

all your thoughts and prayers for my Dad and my family.

God Bless you all,

Tom Van Dyke

Thank you for your recent donation to the “Feed My Sheep”

Food Cupboard. The need for assistance by many families

in this area continues. The food and monetary contribu-

tions we are receiving from individuals, businesses, schools

and churches make it possible for us to respond to these

needs.

Last month 158 families were served including 3 new fami-

lies coming for their first visit.

Our volunteer workers appreciate the support you are help-

ing to provide. As you contributing to the welfare of others,

May God’s blessing be with you.

Gratefully yours,

Shirley Oshum

Secretary

Pastor Jeff, Ladies of HUMC, and all who helped with

Dave’s memorial,

Words cannot say what is in my heart about how I feel

about all of you. Pastor Jeff, you were able to say things

about Dave that sounded like you knew him forever. You

were amazing! Ladies, you certainly made us all feel as

though we were sitting in your own kitchens. All of you

expressed kindness and comforting words—God certainly

blessed us with your deeds.

Thank you, again and may God bless every one of you.

1. Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest home! All is safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied; Come to God's own temple, come;

2. We ourselves are God's own field,

Fruit unto his praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown Unto joy or sorrow grown; First the blade and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear; Grant, O harvest Lord, that we Wholesome grain and pure may be.

3. For the Lord our God shall come,

And shall take the harvest home; From His field shall in that day All offences purge away, Giving angels charge at last In the fire the tares to cast; But the fruitful ears to store In the garner evermore

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" is an English Christian harvest festival hymn written in 1844 by Henry Alford. It is often sung to the tune St. George's, Windsor by George Job Elvey.

Alford wrote "Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" in 1844 while he was the rector of Aston Standford church in Buckinghamshire, England. It was first published in Hymns and Psalms in 1844 with seven verses under the title "After Harvest".[1] "Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" was set to George J. Elvey's hymn tune St. George's, Windsor in 1858.[3] In 1865, Alford revised the hymn, and it was republished in his Poetical Works with only four verses. In 1861 there had been a number of unofficial revisions of the hymn, including in "one in Hymns Ancient and Modern, which led to Alford publishing a footnote in Poetical Works stating his disapproval of these revisions that had been made without his agreement.[1] Despite this, Alford revised the hymn again in 1867 in Year of Praise. Alford was a moderate who attempted to keep good relations between non-conformists and the High Church Anglicans in the Church of England: "Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" is Alford's only hymn that is found in evangelical hymn books.[4] The hymn later gained popularity in the United States where it is used as part of Thanksgiving celebrations.[3] The first verse is written as a celebration of the harvest, calling for people to give thanks to God for it.[5] The last two verses are based on the Para-

ble of the Tares, and discuss the last harvest at the Second Coming of Jesus. Wikipedia
