Why We Built
It was late in the morning on an overcast spring Friday. Forty-five people had gathered in the parking lot. Three construction workers worked their heavy machinery. At least one by-stander stopped to see what was going on. There, on the 15th of May, in the year of our Lord 2015, a cross was lifted high off the ground and placed atop the new narthex of New Life Church-Lutheran.
I ’ve got to be honest with you. Of all the events I ’ve been part of as pastor of this congregation—and there have been some incredibly moving and emotional events—this one may have had the most profound impact on me. That morning a group representing this congregation (and representing the entire church on earth!) did what the church has been called to do in all times and places. There, in both song and deed, we joined together to “Lift High the Cross” for the whole world to see!
It’s a moment I’ll never forget.
It’s why we built. We could put it that simply. We expanded and renovated our building—
So that we might lift high the cross. So that more people may hear of Jesus. So that those who believe in Jesus may have more room to learn and worship and grow in their faith. So that we may show this community more effectively the love God has shown us in Jesus. I hope you notice that cross every time you come to New Life Church-Lutheran. When you drive into the parking lot, I hope you remember that you’ve come to this place because you need the forgiveness and grace of Christ. When you enter through the front doors, I hope you will look up and remember the loving sacrifice of Jesus made for you and for all. When you leave this place—especially at night—and look back to see the light shining on that cross, I hope you remember the mission we have been given to share the light of Christ with everyone in this dark and dying world. The new cross on our new narthex was “lifted” on May 15, 2015. By the grace of God, and by the power of His Spirit, we will continue to lift high the cross in everything we think and say and do! Tips for your Vegetable Garden This Summer
Be ready to work outside
Maintaining a garden of any kind takes a great deal of time and effort, so be prepared to continuously work outside in your garden to make it thrive. Check on your plants frequently to make sure they are getting enough nutrients and water. Mulching is key as well. Keeping a layer of mulch, preferably organic, around your plant’s roots will not just help them retain moisture, but also keep weeds at bay. Keep on top of weeds during the early summer when they are small and easy to pull. If you keep your garden plants well watered and fertilized, they will quickly fill in bare spaces and give weeds fewer places to grow. Harvest as often as possible. When your plants begin producing vegetables, harvest it as soon as it’s ready. By doing so, you’re allowing the plants to retain nutrients and energy that will continue to the feed new growth. You’ll now be able to enjoy your freshly picked fruits and vegetables with your next meal.
Summer Vacation and Weekly Worship
Don’t let summer vacation plans get in the way of Sunday morning worship! If you are going to be traveling on a Sunday morning and can’t worship at New Life, you have several good options. First, you could worship on Thursday evening at 5:30pm at our sister congregation in White Bear Lake, South Shore Trinity Lutheran Church. They have planned this service specifically for people who are away for the weekend during the summer months. Second, check the LCMS website for a congregation in the area you’ll be traveling. Visit www.lcms.org to conduct a search. Third, if there are no congregations in the area you’ll be, plan ahead to have a special family (or individual) worship service by the lake or in the woods. Speak with Pastor Peter and he can help you plan for such a service.
Remember that the Lord never takes vacation from providing for us, so we shouldn’t either! And keep in mind the witness you make to your family and friends when you show them that your relation-ship with God is the most important thing in your life. Actions often speak much louder than words!
Christian Faith and Science – Workshop at New Life “It might be said that many pastors don’t know enough about science. But what non-scientist does? Of course, most of us could be better informed about science, but this won’t help much unless our theology also is adequate to deal with the assumptions, methods, and findings of modern science.” This is how Professor Joel Okamoto describes a workshop that he is leading this summer sponsored by the MN South district. It is an intensive three-day class designed for pastors, church-workers, and interested laypeople. Dr. Okamoto is a professor at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis (and he was also Pastor Peter’s doctoral advisor). The workshop is called “Theology for Ministry in a Scientific Age.” It will explore theological topics that a scientific age make important for all Christians, including God, creation, human creatures, and the Scriptures. And best of all: the class will take place here at New Life on August 17-19! Cost for the workshop is $1 40, which includes Continuing Education Credits from Concordia Seminary. For more information, or to register, speak with Pastor Peter or go to http://www.csl.edu/resources/continuinged/summer-workshop-series/, email [email protected] or call 314-505-7286.

FLAG DAY June 14 The anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777
was officially established by the Proclamation of
President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916.
While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities
for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until
August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress
designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Daily Bible Reading –Psalms I’ve got a challenge for you during the months of June and July. Read the book of Psalms. All of it. I know, it’s kind of long. 150 Psalms, to be exact. But here’s the reason—the psalms are prayers. They address every aspect of life, and they give us words to speak back to God. Many of our routines change during the summer. Unfortunately, sometimes those changes involve less time spent in God’s Word. Let’s do the opposite this summer. If you read two psalms each day, and three on a few days, you’ll get through the entire Psalter. On most days you can read one in the morning and one in the evening. Or perhaps read them around the dinner table with your children. Make it a family challenge, and let God’s Word shape your thinking and praying this summer!
Are you up for it?!?

“The Bible tells us that only in the heavenly home will we come to know the meaning of perfection (Revelation 7:16-17). Our neighbors, whose beautiful little girl is suffering from a brain tumor, will not have to wonder why she should be afflicted in this way for there will be no disease and imperfections that we live with while here on earth. We will not see bodies dying of malnutrition, and no more tears will be shed … Is it no wonder that St. Paul, knowing the heavenly home awaited him, said, „For me to live is Christ, but to die is gain‟ (Philippians 1:21).” Rev. Homer Larson, speaker on the Christian Cru-saders radio program This “Life Quote” is from Lutherans For Life – www.lutheransforlife.org.
Theme: New Beginnings at New Life
Jesus' baptism marked the
beginning of his ministry.

Scripture: And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem
went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. Mark 1:4-5
(NIV)
This is an exciting time. On June 14th we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of our congregation and the beginning of the use of our brand new building. This is really an exciting time for us. We watched the construction of the new parts of our building from the day we took shovels and had a ground breaking ceremony to June 14th when we will have our Dedication Celebration. It is a time of new beginnings at New Life.
Jesus experienced times of new beginnings in his life too. One of those times was when he was baptized. There were a couple of very important things that happened when Jesus was baptized. First of all, the Bible tells us that the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove and landed upon him. The second thing was that God spoke and said, "You are my Son. I love you and I am well-pleased with you."
This event marked the beginning of Jesus' ministry here on earth. Up until that time, he had not performed any miracles, but with God's stamp of approval and with the spirit of God upon him, Jesus began to perform great miracles. From this new beginning, many people began to understand that Jesus was truly the Son of God and they began to follow him.
Our own baptism represents a new beginning for us as well. When we are baptized, it shows the world that just as Jesus rose from the dead through the glory of God the Father, we also live a new life in him. (Romans 6:4) God may not always be well-pleased with us, but I think that He looks down with an approving smile when he sees us trying to walk with Jesus.
New beginnings -- God gives us lots of opportunities for new beginnings. Using our new building is one of them. Let us make the most of it as we live a new life in Christ through the power of his Holy Spirit.
Dear Father, thank you for new beginnings at New Life. Help us to make the most of them -- not through our own strength -- but through the power of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
for the
wonderful
prayers and flowers and cards.
I’m on the mend and hope to be
back in church soon.
Thank You, Ceil
