    IntroductionIntroduction

All living things are made of cellsCells are made up of organelles which are

structured to perform specific jobs neededfor life: cells are basic units of structureand functions of lifeCells always originate from other cells,

however the first cells are thought to haveformed from organic chemicals present inthe harsh conditions of early earth.

Tonight: Read chapter 4 in science textCells and Heredity, p 73-87 for homework.

Focus in on section 4.2 Objectives

You should be able to:Describe the structure of a cell

Explain the functions of the cells organellesCompare and contrast plant and animal cellsConstruct a table that shows understanding of cellfunctions and structure

OverviewOverview Tools we will use to learn aboutTools we will use to learn aboutcells:cells:

You will read the textbook You will complete an Online activity in a thoughtful way inorder to begin to memorize the parts of a cell and the functions

of those partsYou will prepare and study from Flashcards prepared withnames of parts on one side and functions on the other You will prepare a model that demonstrate the location of organelles of a cell and the differences between plant and animal

cells. You will test your knowledge of the information by completingthe chapter review located on pages 89-91You will relearn missed information as needed

Cell- The basic unit of structure andfunction in living things

Organelle: a tiny part of a cell which has aspecial form and functionTissue: a group of cells working together to perform a life function

Nucleus: the control centerNucleus: the control centerStructure: Its contents arecontained by the nuclearmembraneStructure: large dark stainingareaFunction: ContainsChromosomes, which are madeoff DNA (deoxyribonucleicacid). DNA contains theinformation about how the cellcan construct the proteinsneeded by that organism.Function: Messenger RNA(ribonucleic acid), located inthe nucleus, will copy parts of the DNA ,as needed, then travelout of the nucleus to where aprotein is to be made.
