Then you won’t want to make a resolution. Does that sound a little off to you? Soon after the New Year holiday, I heard that resolutions fail because we focus on the end result instead of the action we need to take to achieve the result. Instead, we should make revolutions or active change to achieve a desired result.

What kind of revolutions will you create for your career, organization, and life this year?

If you find yourself spinning in your tracks or looking for new ideas, this magazine is for you. From Bonnie Robertson’s Entrepreneurs’ Corner (page 20) to Adrianne Machina’s marketing quiz (page 26) to Joe Mechlinski and Rob Macdonald’s five ways to keep your momentum (page 22), our contributors have compiled the leadership, sales, and marketing information you need to make those revolutions.

In addition to the content mentioned above and throughout the magazine, this issue brings you the Spring 2010 edition of The List: Magazine. We have 23 pages of listings – which I think might be a new record – to help you find the ISV solutions that you need.

We’re also proud to offer the fourth edition of The List: Handbook at Convergence 2010 Atlanta. You can pick up a copy of your own at the Dynamic Communities booth (#514) in the Convergence Expo. Partners and customers have told us that they refer to the handbook throughout the year, and we’re glad to get that valuable information into your hands.

If you’re reading this magazine for the first time at Convergence and would like to receive future issues, head on over to www.thepartnerchannel.com and sign up for a free subscription. We’d love to have you in the readership!

As always, thank you to our advertisers, List participants, contributors, artists, and TPC team. Pulling together this magazine is a joy, and it wouldn’t be here (literally!) without you.

Here’s wishing you a great spring and many happy revolutions.

Spider Has Left the Building...

Random Thoughts

Yup, this could be my last article for awhile. Can’t keep my mouth shut for very long, so it’s probably not my last article ever (provid-ing Jenny needs to fill space).

The following is not necessarily a rant so much as an observation.

Over time I think the Partner channel has evolved into two basic camps: those that re-member the “good old days” (we’ll call those folks the O.G.s for “original gangsters”) and those that weren’t there and don’t care about the good old days (we’ll call these guys the Y.T.s for “young turks”). Now nei-ther of these terms reflects age so much as the point in time when you came to accept business management software as your per-sonal business path. The fact is, the present time will be the good old days for someone, someday.

Everyone in the O.G. group has their per-sonal product bias. It’s no secret that my experience was deep on the GP side. We used to go to trade shows and stare across the aisle at competitors like Solomon and others. We were always friendly but knew we were, at the end of the day, “mortal enemies”. Now we are in the same tent. My point is that things change. No kidding. We are better for it.

Let me also point out that we have selec-tive memory. The good old days were most times anything but … unless you think that products that crash are a hoot or that the fiscal quicksand of start-ups leads to deep sleep, you could argue that it felt great when it was over. Then the romantic in us takes over. We remember the good stuff. The

camaraderie of late night bug fixes and the resulting celebrations. Everyone was broke and had to think twice about whether or not to get on board with innovative products. Then you’d drain the kids’ college accounts and roll the dice. Then face the spouse’s anger if he or she wasn’t already part of the new spontaneous business plan. Ahhh… the good times.

Then the Y.T.s come to the game with a different perspective. They look back at how lucky the O.G.s were. Imagine the whole world needed to automate their business. Every company was a likely client. Talk about cherry picking. Now the Y.T.s need to be smarter, more strategic. It is difficult, I think, with the market as com-petitive as it is, for Y.T.s to look at the long term. Constant demand for more leads knowing that an ever-growing percentage will be dead ends.

While the O.G.s are a declining popula-tion (mergers and retirements and so on) and the Y.T.s are an ever-evolving group, the one thing they have in common is… the now.

Both camps seem to think that the moth-ership needs to do much more to secure their collective success. What they like about the mothership is exactly why they are disappointed.

Big motherships supply power, stabil-ity, brand, and market reach. They supply resources to underwrite research and de-velopment that we could only dream of in the days of yore. We love that. While we embrace and now expect these relationship perks, we are totally surprised when the

mothership can’t turn on a dime, when it seems to move at a snail’s pace in regard to decision making. Big organizations move slow. We hate that. It has always been that way. That’s what happens when a business leaves the insecurity of entrepreneurship for the promise of strength that comes with a large corporate environment. From my perspective, that has always been the in-nate appeal of The Partner Channel model. Let the mothership supply the heavy brand machinery and resources, and let the Part-ners supply the in-the-trenches flexibility and agility required to stay competitive and relevant.

How both gangs proceed will be how entrepreneurs have always existed, survived, and succeeded. They will constantly rein-vent and adjust. The mothership depends on that. The Partners will gather intelli-gence and report back to the mothership. From there it will depend on her willingness to absorb, understand, and incorporate.

The Partners need to maintain their independence. They cannot rely solely on the mothership to make things happen. Entrepreneurs see things first because they see their customers across the table. They own the relationship. The mothership is not that tactile. Can’t be. If you as a Partner expect that, you will be disappointed.

It’s nature. We depend on each other. Mothership feeds Partner and vice versa. The choreography of that relationship is as old as the hills. And like all things in a rela-tionship, you move better when both parties know the next steps.

Good luck. Beam me up, mother.
